MCGINLEY - Dorothy Mae McGinley, 93, passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 1998 at Baptist Medical Center Beaches. She was a native of Allentown, PA, where she was active in amateur theater and moved to Jacksonville with her husband, the late James A. McGinley, Jr. and children in 1940. She lived independently in the family home on Northwood Road until last year, and had resided at the Jacksonville Beach Home of her daughter and son-in-law, RADM and Mrs. Byron Fuller. After years as a homemaker, Mrs. McGinley worked at the American National Bank as the switchboard operator until her mid-70's. She then was a volunteer for Travelers Aid for several years. She was a member of St. Michael's Church Circle. She was predeceased by her husband, James A. McGinley, Jr. and her son, James A. McGinley, III. Her memory will bring joy to her survivors, Kathleen and Cal Tuggle, Mary Anne and Bryon Fuller and Joan McGinley and their children and grandchildren. A graveside memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, February 14, 1998 (TODAY) at Oaklawn cemetery, with Rev. Daniel Cody of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Joseph's Building Fund, 11730 Old St. Augustine Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32258. HARDAGE-GIDDENS FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, Jacksonville Beach is in charge of arrangements.

PIPPIN - Funeral services for Sherman L. Pippin, 64, will be held at 10:00 AM Monday in the chapel of George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Blvd. S., with Rev. Steve McCollum, officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2PM until 4PM Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Pippin passed away Wednesday, February 11, 1998 in a local hospital. He was born in Boone, North Carolina and served in the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of First Baptist Church for 40 years. Mr. Pippin retired as Lieutenant from Jacksonville Sheriff's Office where he worked in the Communication Department. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn A. Pippin; his daughter, Becky Richmond; his son, David Pippin; three grandchildren, David D. Pippin, Jennifer Pippin and Parker Richmond.

REYNOLDS - Willis Jennings 'W.J.' Reynolds, 74, died Thursday, February 12, 1998. Mr. Jennings, a veteran of the U.S. Navy WWII, was retired from the City of Jacksonville's Communications Signal Bureau. After his retirement, he was employed with Motorola Communications. Mr. Jennings was also an amateur radio operator with his call letters being 'W4IJJ'. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Faith Reynolds; a daughter, Diane Dinkins; 2 sons, Terry & John Reynolds; a sister, Edna Miller; 3 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, February 16, in the chapel of Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, 1426 Rowe Ave. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5PM Sunday at the funeral home.

RYLES - Rosa Lee Ryles, of 1320 Broad St., passed away February 6, 1998. She was a member of Second Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Odell Smith, Pastor. Survivors include her daughters, Thelma Basine (Leroy), Gracie Mae Murphy, Ruth Ryles Robinson (John); son, William Ryles; ten grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; one great great grandchild; other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM MONDAY in her church, Pastor Smith, officiating. Viewing at the mortuary from 5 until 8PM SUNDAY. Interment in Edgewood cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to: A.B. COLEMAN MORTUARY, INC. 5660 Moncrief Rd.

SMITH - Jacqueline R. Smith, 68, of Jacksonville, passed away Thursday, February 12, 1998. She was born June 25, 1929 in Newark, NJ. She is survived by two sisters, Audrey P. Hance and Valerie Ann Hance; and her brother, George Hance. HARDAGE-GIDDENS FUNERAL HOME, 6940 Atlantic Blvd. is in charge of arrangements.

STARLING - Mrs. Mary Lou Thomas Starling, 70, of Bronson, died Thursday at the North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville after an extended illness. Mrs. Starling was born in Lulu. She lived in Baker County most of her life before moving to Bronson in 1995. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the New River New Congregational Methodist Church north of Raiford. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elvin James Starling. Mrs. Starling is survived by 2 daughters, Cathy Bedford of Bronson and Sharon Starling of Gainesville; 5 sisters, Lois Dicks and Leah Cribbs both of Lake City, Annie Mietus and Linda Clemons, both of Lake Butler, Jewell Zihal of Melrose; 2 brothers, Leroy Thomas of Daytona Beach and Charles Thomas of Lake Butler; 2 granddaughters. Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 15, 1998 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Archer Funeral Home of Lake Butler with Rev. John W. Yarbrough, officiating. Burial will follow at Manntown cemetery in Baker County. Archer Funeral Home of Lake Butler is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6PM to 8PM Saturday evening.

ANDERSON - Mr. Alvin W. 'Andy' Anderson, 67, died Monday, May 11, 1998 in Oakland, Maryland while visiting his family. Mr. Anderson was born in Oakmont, W.VA and had resided in Jax for many years before moving to Darien, GA, seven years ago. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, a member of the Operating Engineers Local Union #673 and attended the Pentecostal church. He was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Betty in 1970 and his wife, Mary in 1977. Survivors include his three children: Sharon (Frankie) Hammonds, Carolyn Love and Morris (Laveta) Anderson; his mother, Mrs. Velma Anderson; 13 sisters and brothers: Eileen (Roy) Critcher, Phyllis Flanagan, Bernadine Dedmon, Barbara (Roger) Welch, Janet (Arky) Dye, Thelma (Don) Lacy, Nancy (Mike) Brady, Helen Crouse, Shirley Anderson, Harry, Robert, Wiley & Ron Anderson; 7 grandchildren: Crystal Gelinas, Dustin & Kyle Hammonds, Shelia and Shenoa Anderson, Melody & Amanda Love; a great-grandchild: Devon Gelinas and a number of nieces & nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 14, 1998 from the chapel of PEEPLE'S FUNERAL HOME, 2220 Soutel Dr., near Lem Turner Rd. Burial in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 PM on Wed. (TODAY) at the funeral home.

AUSTIN - London W. 'Dub' Austin, 70, passed away May 11, 1998. He was a native of Jesup, GA. and had resided in Jacksonville most of his life. He was a retired member of the Teamster's Union, beginning his service in 1947. He is survived by 3 sons, Robert, Ronald and Roy Austin; 2 daughters, Julie Beal and Connie Long; step-son, Charles Bruner, Jr.; step-daughter, Dianne Purvis; brother, Bobby Austin; and several grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Thursday, May 14, 1998 in the Chapel of HARDAGE-GIDDENS FUNERAL HOME, 4315 Main St., with Rev. Dorothy Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM, Wed., (TODAY) at the Funeral Home.

DEWITT - George Hamilton DeWitt, 80, died Monday, May 11, 1998. Mr. DeWitt was of the Baptist faith, a veteran of WWII and member of the Oceanway Lions Club. He is survived by 3 daughters, Connie Bracknell, Patsy Hallman & Betty Lipp; 4 sons, Ed, Tommy, Ronnie & Donnie DeWitt; a sister, Mary Beach; a brother, David DeWitt; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, in Riverside Memorial Park, with Rev. F. Ray Turner, officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 PM Wednesday (TODAY) at Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, 1426 Rowe Ave.

GALLAGHER - Wilma Smallwood Gallagher, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrator Officer of Coggin Automotive Group, died Sunday morning, May 10, 1998 at Baptist Hospital. She was sixty-five. Mrs. Gallagher was born and raised in Gulf Hammock, FL. She was the daughter of Lucius Parks and Bethel E. Drury Smallwood. After graduating from Bronson High School in Bronson, FL, she attended Jones Business College in Jacksonville. She worked 14 years for Turnipseed Motor Company in Ocala. Following her move to Jacksonville in 1968, she became the first employee of the new fledgling Coggin Pontiac-GMC. Mrs. 'G' as she was fondly called by Coggin employees, went from office manager in 1968 to controller in 1970. She served as general manager of the company in the early 1980's before her promotion to executive vice president and chief administrative officer, the position she held at the time of her death. Mrs. Gallagher is survived by her husband, 35 years, Emmet Gallagher; four brothers, Burland (Mildred) of Ocala, Parks (Lil) of Ocala, Z. Vincent (LaViece) of Macclenny, Bill (Mary) of Jacksonville; three sisters, Irmise Lathrop of Harrodsburg, KY, Vivian (C.E.) Mulkey of Ocala and Rachel (Willie) Denmark of Jacksonville; sister-in-law, Joan (Verle) Tillotson, Montgomery, AL; brother-in-law, Dennis (Anita) P. Gallagher, Jr. of Ocala, Bill (Blanche) Grant of Ocala and sister-in-law, Jane Kathryn (Bob) Brewster, Ocala; and many nieces, nephews and countless friends. Funeral services will be administered by Rev. Fred Woolsey, Associate Minister, First Christian Church of Beaches, eulogy by her brother, Z. Vincent Smallwood. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, May 13th in the Hardage Giddens Chapel. Interment immediately following at Oaklawn cemetery. Pallbearers: Allan Smith, Bud LaBorde, Charlie McIntosh, Butch Ferrizzi, David Pounds, Dennis Gallagher, III and John Gallagher. Honorary pallbearers: Executives of Coggin Automotive Group. Dedication of the grave: Z. Vincent Smallwood. Arrangements by HARDAGE-GIDDENS FUNERAL HOME, 4115 Hendricks Ave.

HOBBS - Funeral services for Diana Marie Hobbs, 56, who died Sunday, May 10, 1998, will be held Thursday at 11AM in Evergreen's Garden Cloister Chapel with Rev. Tim Rigdon, officiating. Interment in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-8 PM at George H. Hewell and Son Northside Funeral Home. Mrs. Hobbs was a native of Jacksonville, FL and was a lifelong resident. She was a member of the Baptist faith. Survivors include her mother, Connie Hobbs; a daughter, Debbie S. Covington (Darryll); a sister, Cindy Weatherly (Jim); 2 brothers, Teddy Hobbs and Stan Hobbs (Tammy); 1 grandchild, Jordan Covington; several nieces and nephews; some very close friends like family.

JONES - Mrs. Mable Robinson Jones, retired Educator, passed away May 10, 1998. A native of Gadsden County, FL. She has been a resident of the Jax, FL area many years and was a member of Old Stanton Class of 1940, continued her education at FAMU. Mrs. Jones was very active in her community. She was a member of Woodlawn Presbyterian Church and held membership with a number of Social and Community Organizations, among them, Retired Teachers Association, Democratic Women, Seniors and Retirees of Woodlawn, FAMU National Alumni Association, Entre Nous Bridge Club, African Violet Society and others. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM THURSDAY May 14, 1998 in Restlawn Memorial Park. Survivors are: stepbrother, Mr. Harry Jackson, Jr.; a number of cousins, amongst them, Mr. and Mrs. Clement W. Hall, Sr., the Sanders, Mitchell and Robinson Families, Gadsden County, FL; godson, Mr. Alonzo Davis, III, other relatives and many loving neighbors and friends. Family and friends will assemble at the grave site. THERE WILL BE NO VIEWING. Arrangements by JAMES N. DAVIS FUNERAL HOME, INC. 5879 Moncrief Rd. James N. Davis, Sr. and June B. Davis, L.F.D.

METZ - Funeral Mass for Jean W. Metz, age 59, will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, May 15, 1998 at Jacksonville Memory Gardens, 111 Blanding Blvd., Orange Park, FL. Mrs. Metz of 1271 Chickasaw Ct., Orange Park, died Tuesday, May 12, 1998 in a local hospital. She was a native of Columbus, GA, having resided in the Jacksonville area for the past 30 years. She retired from NADEP in May 1995 and in retirement has enjoyed traveling, volunteer work, her family, friends and cats. She is survived by her loving husband, of 28 years, Harry R. Metz, Jr.; a stepmother, Dorothy Wilson of Beaumont, TX; two brothers and their spouses, James and Ann Wilson and Richard and Donna Wilson; 2 stepbrothers, Mark and David Wilson; her mother-in-law, Corine Metz; 2 uncles, 1 aunt, various nieces, nephews, cousins, and a loving, extended family of in-laws and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Lupus Foundation of NE Florida. Visitation will be Thursday, May 14 from 6-8 PM at Jax Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the Metz residence immediately following the services.
