Armetta J. McMullon, 79, of 3700 E. 14th St., Panama City, Fla., passed away Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999. Mrs. McMullon had been a resident of Bay County for 54 years, coming here from Port St. Joe, Fla. She was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith, a homemaker and minister. Mrs. McMullon is survived by her sons: Millard H. McMullon and wife Mary, David McMullon and wife Wanda and Jimmy McMullon and wife Belinda, all of Panama City; daughters, Ellonise Wilson and husband Jim of Panama City and Ruth Holland and husband Jerry of Pensacola, Fla.; sisters, Joyce Moews of Kansas City, Kan., and Nealie Barron of Panama City; a brother, Bill Aaron of Fountain, Fla.; son-in-law, the Rev. Ronald Garland of Fountain. Mrs. Clora Dean "Kitty" McNaron, 72, of 5000 W. 18th St., Panama City, Fla., passed away Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, in a local hospital. Mrs. McNaron had been a resident of Bay County since 1961, coming here from Tallahassee, Fla. She was Methodist by faith, member of the Panama City Pilot Club, the Junior Women's Club and was a retired secretary for Gulf Coast Community College for 33 years. Mrs. McNaron is survived by her sons, Mr. Mike McNaron and wife Libby of Lynn Haven, Fla., and Ricky McNaron of Pine Bluff, Ark.; stepbrother, Ricky Ponder of Pine Bluff; grandsons, Ricky McNaron II of Lynn Haven and Elton Wayne Kolmetz Jr. and wife Brandi of Panama City; a great-granddaughter, Angel Leigh Kolmetz of Panama City; and numerous nieces and nephews. H. NEWTON 'MAC' MCNEIL
H. Newton "Mac" McNeil, 74, beloved husband for 56 years of Voncile McNeil went to heaven Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999. He was at the home of his daughter in Arnold, Mo. Mr. McNeil was born in Bonifay, Fla., Feb. 10, 1925. He moved to Jacksonville, Fla., in 1945. He was a Jacksonville city fireman and owner and operator of McNeils Upholstery and Carpet Shop on Edgewood Avenue until retiring in 1970. After retiring, Mr. McNeil did volunteer work for bible colleges, children's homes and mission organizations. Before coming to Arnold in December 1998, he resided in Keystone Heights, Fla. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and Timothy Bible Class in Keystone Heights. Mr. McNeil is survived by his wife Voncile C. McNeil of Arnold; daughter and son-in-law, Jim and Sue Agnew of Arnold; and daughter, Debbie Pipkin of Breckenridge, Colo.; one sister, Myrtle Williams of St. Andrews, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. ARTHUR VANCE HOOKS JR.
Arthur Vance Hooks Jr., 77, of Panama City, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999. Mr. Hooks was born in Charlotte, N.C. He graduated from Clemson University and served in the Army Corps of Engineers. He was a Veteran of World War II. He was an instructor at Fort Belvoir and author of one of the Engineering books there. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church for 34 years. Mr. Hooks began his railroad career with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. Mr. Hooks moved to Dothan, Ala., in 1955 as assistant to the president of the Bay Line Railroad. He moved to Panama City in 1965 as vice-president of the Bay Line, assuming the office of president in 1968. He retired from the Bay Line in 1987 as chairman of the board, president and CEO. He spent his entire career in railroading, with the exception of 1975-1979 when he assumed the responsibilities of general manager of Worldwide Transportation with International Paper Co. in New York City, N.Y. His achievements include being president of the Bay County Chamber of Commerce, president of the Committee of 100, president of the Gulf Coast Community College Foundation and president of the Local Chapter of the American Red Cross. He served as a member of the board of directors of the Shortline Railways Association, Sunshine Jr. Stores and Commercial Bank of Panama City among others. He was a member of the Downtown Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the Who's Who of American Businessmen. Mr. Hooks is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mildred J. Hooks; his children, Linda H. Brennan and husband, Jimmy of Montgomery, Ala., Gayle H. Greenwood and husband, Jim of Atlanta, Ga., A. Vance Hooks and wife, Karen, Henry T. Hooks and wife, Bess, all of Panama City; his brother, Kenneth L. Hooks and wife, Betty of Columbia, S.C.; 10 grandchildren; a great grandson; and a niece and nephew. Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Doug Newton and Dr. Si Mathison officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Louise E. Rice, age 47, of Ringgold passed away Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at a local hospital. Mrs. Rice lived most of her life in Panama City, Fla. She has lived in Ringgold for the last year. Born in Calhoun County, she had been a resident of Gulf County for the past 67 years and was of the Protestant faith. Ann E. Cox, age 85, of Panama City, Fla., died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999 at her home. She was a native of Lexington, Ky., and recently moved to Panama City from Clearwater, Fla. DONALD K. NELSON
Don K. Nelson of 3112 East US 12 Niles, Mich., died in his home on Oct. 2, 1999. He was a member of the VFW, Eagles, and a lifetime member of the American Legion. Mr. Nelson retired from Allied Signal-Bendix Missile Division in Mishawaka, Ind., to Panama City, Fla., where he owned Nelson's Restaurant and Lounge. After he sold the restaurant he moved to Niles, and traveled throughout the United States and Canada. Survivors include his wife, Mozell Nelson of Niles; son, Scott Nelson; daughter and son-in-law, Debby and Glen Alexander; granddaughter, Carla Alexander of Tallahassee, Fla.; grandson, Rusty Alexander of Panama City; mother, Marie Nelson; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Carolyn Nelson; brother-in-law, Norman Juddy of Lincoln, Neb. Mr. A. C. "Pat" Reff, age 90, of 15935 Crestline Road, Fountain, Fla., died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999 at a local nursing home. He had been a resident of the area since 1975, coming here from Albertson, N.Y., and was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Fountain, Fla. Mr. Reff was a volunteer fireman with the Green Hills-Fountain Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as treasurer. He also served as treasurer for the Fountain Community Center and Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church. Mr. Reff was very involved in the community of Fountain. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nelly Reff of Fountain, Fla.; a son, Dick Reff and his wife Marilyn of Rochester, N.Y.; three grandsons: Mitchell Reff and his wife Margaret, Michael Reff and his wife Diane, and Martin Reff, all of Rochester, N.Y.; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Fr. William Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Louise E. Rice, 47, of Panama City, passed away Friday, Oct. 22, 1999 in Ringgold, Ga. Mrs. Rice lived most of her life in Panama City, Fla. She has lived in Ringgold for the last year. Mrs. Rice was preceded in death by her mother, Marie Rita Cox; and her sister, Teresa Leduc. Mr. William D. Crowe, 85, of Panama City, Fla., went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999 in Glencove Nursing Pavilion. On Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, Mr. Crowe's family received a comforting message from the Lord having them read Psalms 34. Born in Lamar County, Ala., he moved here in 1976 from Springhill, La. He was retired from International Paper Company as a machinist. He was also a member of First Baptist Church of Panama City and Triple "L" Sunday School Class. Mr. Crowe is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ozelle M. Crowe and daughter, Julia Crowe both of Panama City. Former Bay County resident Virginia Hernandez, 91, died Oct. 25, 1999. She was born April 30, 1908 in Atlanta, Ga., and with her late husband Al, moved to Bay County in 1967. In 1992, she relocated to Sarasota, Fla., where she remained until her death. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Virginia Howell and Mrs. Clementine Fernander of Sarasota; and a son, Al Hernandez of Brooksville, Fla. He was Espicopalian by faith and served his country in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era. Mr. Cowan was the past president of A.F.A., a Paul Harris Fellow in the Lynn Haven Rotary and past president, and former chief ground school instructor at Sowell Aviation. Mr. Robert Lee Exley, age 67, of 402 New York Ave., Lynn Haven, Fla., died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999 in a local hospital. He was a native of Augusta, Ga., but had been a resident of Bay County for the past 32 years. He was co-owner of Fran's Travel, a decorated veteran of the Korean War serving with U.S. Army 3rd Airborne Rangers and a member of the V.F.W. Mr. Exley was also a member of Harry Jackson Masonic Lodge No. 314, the Shaddai Temple, the Moose Lodge, and the Elks. He retired from the FAA in 1979. He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Fran W. Exley, and is survived by Clara Register, a life partner; his two daughters: Mrs. Kare Rector of Panama City Beach and Mrs. Ellyn Newgreen of Tallahassee; granddaughter, Keleigh Rector of Panama City Beach; a grandson, Austin Newgreen of Tallahassee; and a son-in-law, Terry Newgreen of Tallahasse.
