FREEMAN - Wilmer “Bill” Freeman, 84, a resident of Jacksonville born in Memphis, Tennessee on June 3, 1918 and came to the area in June of 1997 from Stuart, Florida. He was a retired commercial building design engineer, was a member of the Beaches United Methodist Church and served in the United States Navy. His first wife, Evelyn R. Freeman, preceded Mr. Freeman in death in 1986. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Freeman of Jacksonville; son, Gary Freeman of Ipswich, Massachusetts; step-daughter, Nancy Jordan of Gainesville, Fl.; 2 grandchildren, Faith Jordan of Tallahassee, Fl. and Brad Jordan of Gainesville, Fl. GROSH - E. John Grosh born and raised in Ft. Wayne, IN on March 1, 1937. John graduated from Xavier University with a B.S. in Physics and a minor in Math and Philosophy. After graduation, he became a U.S. Naval officer. Following service to his country, his family followed his business career through Minnesota, Missouri, Pennsylvania, New York and finally Jacksonville, where he has lived for the past 22 years. In his successful career, he became vice president of sales with Betz Paperchem, Inc. Following retirement, he enjoyed a mountain home in North Carolina. Family members include his wife of six years, Charlene Grosh; daughters, Laurie (Brad) Pinover and Suzanne (Gary) Marcy; son, Michael Grosh and his seven grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 30th in the Holy Family Catholic Church followed by Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Greg Fay as Celebrant. Private family interment will be held following the service. HADDEN - Connie L. Hadden, 52, born August 9, 2002, 2 ¸ months old returned to God on October 26, 2002. He leaves to cherish his beautiful little life his loving and devoted parents: mother April S. White, father Curtis S. Juluke, Sr.; paternal grandparents Ferdinand R. Juluke, Sr. and Lois S. Juluke; brothers Antoine Spight and Cyron Guyton and cousin DeAngelo Alexander, all of Jacksonville; devoted Aunt Arvella M. Juluke of Chesenee, South Carolina and a host of other relatives. MORRISON - Jennie Morrison entered her eternal rest with Christ Jesus from Labor to reward on Wednesday, October 23, 2002. Affectionately known as “ Jennie” , she joined church at an early age. She attended local schools in Florida and was an enthusiastic scholar. Jennie graduated from Florida A&M University, receiving her Bachelors Degree. Mrs. Morrison continued her post graduate studies at Columbia University. She was also a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Leaves to cherish her memory, a loving and devoted sister, Carrie T. Richardson of Deltona Florida, God-daughter, Dr. Alfreda A. Johnson of Harrisburg, PA, six sister-in-laws, four brother-in-laws, and a host loving nieces, nephews, friends and the Goodwin Memorial Baptist Church Family. Service will be held Wednesday, October 30, 2002 at Oneal Memorial Baptist Church, 1 pm with Rev. George F. Herring, Sr. Officiating. MULLIS - Carolyn W. Mullis, age 65, passed away October 27, 2002. He was born May 25, 1956 in Jacksonville, FL, the son of the late Elise and Cleveland Proctor and died October 26, 2002 following a lengthy illness. Charles was Baptist by faith and a member of Westside Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife Carol; his children, Charles Proctor, Jr., Steven & Shane Guthrie, Melissa Sauls and Tera Echols; two brothers, Raymond & Floyd Proctor; four sisters Rose Mary Barber, Reba Ridlin, Marie Padgett and Susie Shepard; and nine grandchildren. In addition to his parents Charles is predeceased by two brothers Roger & Henry Proctor and his sister Patsy Wise. Family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home. RENNINGER - Melissa Jane Renninger, 42, passed away on October 26, 2002. He was the son of Dewey and Kate Autry Shelton of Stokes County, NC and had been a resident of Jacksonville for over 50 years. He was formerly a longtime member of Arlington Baptist Church and currently a member of Celebration Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Shelton; a sister, Maxine Stephens; a brother, Harold Shelton; a daughter, Lynne Reynolds; three sons, Mark, Scott and Wayne Shelton; sixteen grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, October 30, 2002 in the chapel of ARLINGTON PARK FUNERAL HOME, 6920 Lone Star Road (724-6384). The family will receive friends from 6 PM until 8 PM on Tuesday at the funeral home. Entombment will follow the funeral service in Arlington Park Cemetery. SMITH - Mildred Legg Smith, age 94, widow of the late Harold Smith, died on October 25, 2002. at Sandsprings Landing in Savannah, Georgia. She was predeceased by her brother, Harris Legg of Vero Beach, Florida. She was a graduate of the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Buffalo, New York. She retired from Donner Hanna Coke Company in Buffalo and was a former president of the New York State Industrial Nurses Association. She was formerly a communicant of the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour in Mandarin while she was a resident at Westminster Woods. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Robert H. and Joan Pritchard Smith, of Savannah, five grandchildren, Deborah Reyes of Savannah, Robert H. Smith, Jr. of St. Pete Beach, Florida, Roddey P. Smith of Wassenaar, The Netherlands, Martha Pruitt, Lt. Col., USAF, Dover, Delaware, and David H. Smith of Sherman Oaks, California, six great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. STRICKLAND - Jessie Reede D. Strickland, 78, born in Parrot, Georgia October 17, 1924 and moved to the Branford, FL area seven years ago from Jacksonville, FL. She was a service representative with Southern Bell Telephone CO., a member of the Southern Bell Pioneers and member of the First Baptist Church of Branford, FL. She is survived by her husband, Sammy L. Strickland of Branford, FL, one daughter, Chris Daniel of Branford, FL, one sister, Nell Sloan of Jacksonville, FL, three grandchildren, Debra Keith of Sanford, FL, Chuck Daniel of Lake City, FL, Melinda Daniel of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, two great grandchildren, Brandon and Sean Fletcher both of Sanford, FL. Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, October 30, 2002 at 1:00 PM in Greenlawn Cemetery 4300 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville, FL with the Rev. Robert Witty officiating. SUMPTER - Harrison "Tennessee" Sumpter , Sr. born in Floyd County, Indiana on January 2, 1920. Her parents were Joseph Zapp and Josephine Graf Zapp. She is survived by four sisters: Mary Rauh of Elk Grove, Illinois; Virginia Chatfield of Denver, Colorado; Dorothy Kreimeyer of Cordele, Georgia and Margaret Hill of Winter Park, Florida. She also has several nieces and nephews living throughout the USA. She was a graduate of St. James School in Orlando, which at the time was also a high school. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1956 and professed her vows in 1958. Her service to the people of God was first as a teacher; in the cities of West Palm Beach, Winter Haven and Miramar. The years from 1964 through the 1990s involved many areas of ministry working with numbers. Beginning with the Mercy Hospital Insurance Office in Miami; then as bookkeeper/receptionist at All Saints Home in Jacksonville; followed by assisting in the General Treasurers office at the Motherhouse and ending up as Librarian. Library work was done at St. Matthew School in Jacksonville, and Villa Flora Novitiate, St. Agnes School and Cathedral Parish School, all in St. Augustine. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Thursday at Sisters of St Joseph Convent, St Augustine. Prayers will be held 7:00 PM Wednesday also at Sisters of St Joseph Convent. Burial will be in San Lorenzo Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph Development Fund, a fund that supports the needs and ministries of the Sisters P.O.
