Raymond Pierce
Raymond E. Pierce Sr., 78, of
Barefoot Bay, died March 28, 1997,
at Palm Bay Community Hospital in
Palm Bay after a prolonged illness.
He was born March 19, 1919, in
Lowell, Mass., and moved to Barefoot Bay nine months ago from
Leominster, Mass.
Mr. Pierce was a disabled U.S.
Army World War II veteran, and a
member of Veterans of Foreign
Wars and Disabled American Veterans. He retired from Fort Devens in
Ayer, Mass.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years,
Agnes; two daughters, Diane Romani, of Barefoot Bay, and Patricia
Lovell, of Westminster, Mass.; one
son, Raymond E. Pierce Jr., of Shirley, Mass.; and 10 grandchildren.
At the family's request, there will
be no repose or visitation.
A memorial service will be held
at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Lowell
at a later date.
Mr. Pierce was a member of the
Indian River Cremation Society.
Patricia Grant
Patricia L. 'Patty' Grant, 19,
4880 Lakewaterford Way W., Melbourne, died unexpectedly March
27, 1997, at Orlando Regional Medical Center after an automobile accident in Orange County.
She was born Nov. 8, 1977, in
Chester, Pa., and had lived in Sebastian from 1980 to 1993.
Ms. Grant was a senior at Palm
Bay High School and she worked as
a drive-through clerk at Burger
King on Babcock Street in Palm Bay.
She is survived by her mother
and stepfather, Emily Louise and
William B. Cobb, of Melbourne;
three sisters, Jennifer Anne Grant
and Sylvia Erin Cobb, both of Melbourne and Shawn Hubinski of
East McKeesport, Pa.; and grandparents, Richard and Emily F. Haarde,
of Sebastian, and Forest and Sylvia
Cobb, of West Melbourne.
Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Brownlie-Maxwell Funeral
Home, Melbourne. The funeral will
be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
Peter Grunzweig
Peter Adam Grunzweig, 54, of
Sebastian, died March 29, 1997, at
Sebastian River Medical Center after a brief illness.
He was born May 30, 1942, in
Wilkesburg, Pa.,and moved to Sebastian seven years ago from Reading, Mass.
Mr. Grunzweig was employed
with Tropicana, Fort Pierce, for
seven years. He was a member of
St. Sebastian Catholic Church, Sebastian.
Surviving are his wife of 33 years,
Sally; two sons, Peter A. Grunzweig
Jr., of Swampscotr, Mass., and Keyin Patrick Grunzweig, of Royal
Oak, Mich.; one daughter, Jennifer
Grunzweig, of Somerville, Mass;
his mother, Elizabeth Grunzweig,
of Melrose, Mass,; one brother, Michael Grunzweig, of Stoneham,
Mass.; four sisters, Margaret DiTrapano, of Sebastian, Barbara Russell,

Ronald Lewis
Ronald P. Lewis Sr, 54, of Sebastian, died April 2,1997, at his residence after a prolonged illness.
He was born June 6, 1942, in
Concord, NC., and moved to Se-
bastian in 1993 from Fredericksburg, Va.
Mr. Lewis was a retired lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy.
He was also a retired senior project
engineer from Mantech Inc., Fredericksburg. He was a member of
Vietnam Veterans of America,
Chapter 0567, Master Gardener Organization of Florida and Sebastian
River Moose, Lodge No. 1767.
Surviving are one son, Ronald
Lewis Jr., of Virginia Beach, Va.;
one daughter, Serina Lewis, of Virginia Beach; and two sisters, June
Zaloumis, of Concord, Calif., and
Terina Kenyon, of Fort Gaines, Ga.
Funeral services were held
April 5 at the Fountainhead Memorial Funeral Home, Palm Bay, with
the Rev. Tomasz officiating. Entombment will follow at Fountainhead Memorial Park Mausoleum,
Palm Bay.

Delos Turner
Delos P. "Tuck" Turner, 85, of
Sebastian, died March 31, 1997, at
his residence after a prolonged illness.
He was born Aug. 30, 1911, in
Odin, Ill., and moved to Sebastian
in 1972 from Madison, Conn.
Mr. Turner was a manager at
Bostitch Universal Wire Plant, Clinton, Conn., for 10 years.
Surviving are his wife of 6_
years, Nellie; three daughters, Layonne Brandon, of Chicago, Linda Shapiro, of Sebastian, and Sally Ann
Erskine, of Fairfield, Conn.; 12
grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Kathleen Kraemer
Kathleen Ann Kraemer, 65, of
Maynard, Mass., and Sebastian,
died April 3,1997, at Emerson Hospital, Concord, Mass., after a brief
illness.
She was born June 14, 1931, in
Brockton, Mass., and was a Sebastian winter resident for 13 years.
Mrs. Kraemer was a member of
St. Bridget Parish, Maynard.
Surviving are four daughters,
Ann Marie Kraemer, of Solana
Beach, Calif., and Mary Tessari, Eileen Kraemer and Theresa Lamoureux, all of Maynard; one brother,
John Monahan, of Palo Alto, Calif.;
and six grandchildren.

Herbert Timreck
Herbert F. Timreck, 72, of Nelsonville, Ohio, died April 4, 1997,
at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio, after a prolonged illness.
He was born Nov. 15, 1924, in
Shidler, Okla., and had lived in
Barefoot Bay for 21 years.
Mr. Timreck was a U.S. Air
Force veteran of World War II, the
Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
He retired from the U.S. Air Force.
He was a member of the Disabled
American Veterans, Paralyzed Veterans Administration and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothea; one son, Michael Timreck, of
Charlottesville, Va.; two daughters,
Geri Mack, of Omaha, Neb., and
Vikki Ritzert, of Okemos, Mich.;
one sister, Regina Lobaugh, of
Milo, Mo.; four grandchildren; and
three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held
at a later date at the convenience of
the family.

John Heathcote
John Whittaker "Jack" Heathcote, 85, of Barefoot Bay, died unexpectedly April 6, 1997, at
Holmes Regional Medical Center,
Melbourne.
He was born Nov. 20, 1911, in
Fall River, Mass., and moved to
Barefoot Bay 12 years ago from
Fort Lauderdale.
Mr. Heathcote retired from the
U.S. Air Force, having served for
more than 30 years. He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church,
Barefoot Bay; a member of the Sebastian Masonic Lodge No. 232
Free and Accepted Masons; a member and Sentinel of the Eastern
Star, Chapter No. 204, Sebastian.
He was a member of the Shrine,
Azan Motor Corps and a life member of the Micco Volunteer Fire
and Rescue Department. He was a
U.S. Army veteran of World War II
and the recipient of two Purple
Heart medals anda Bronze Star. He
was a member of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars, Barefoot Bay.
Surviving are his wife of 38
years, Millie; two daughters, Carol
Stanwise, of Barefoot Bay, Donna
Faber, of Candler, N.C.; one sister,
Margaret Haber, of Barefoot Bay;
and four grandchildren.
A Masonic Service was held April
8 at the Strunk Funeral Home, Sebastian, conducted by the Sebastian Masonic Lodge No. 232 Free
and Accepted Masons.

Mary McClain
Mary Lorayne Huxtable McClain,
77, of Sebastian, died April 7,1997,
at her daughter's residence in Sebastian after a brief illness.
She was born Sept. 23, 1919, in
Caylor, S.D., and moved to Sebastian six months ago from Woodburn, Ore.
Mrs. McClain was the first registered electroencephalogram (EEG)
technician in Oregon. She was a
member of St. Luke's Catholic
Church, Woodburn, and a member
of Senior Estates Women's Golf Association, Woodburn.
Surviving are two daughters,
Margaret Gray, of Sebastian, and
Ann Marie Clark, of Beaverton,
Ore.; two brothers, Larry Carlton,
of Roswell, N.M., and Leo Carlton,
of Tucson, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
At the family's request, there

Mary Catherine "Cissy" Petticrew, S8, of Fellsmere, died April
11, 1997, at Shands Teaching Hospital in Gainesville after a brief illness.
She was born Oct. 28, 1938, in
Springfield, Ohio, and moved to
Indian River County in 1981 from
her birthplace.
Mrs. Petticrew was a homemaker and a Protestant.
Surviving are her husband of 42
years, George; four sons, Tom Petticrew, of Palm Bay; Ronald Petticrew, of Woodland Park, Cob.,
Joseph Petticrew, of Fellsmere, and
George Earl Petticrew Jr., of Vero
Beach; two daughters, Theresa Petticrew, of Sanford, and Mary Louise

Antima Starr
Antima L. Starr, 104, of Sebastian, died April 7, 1997, at Indian
River Village Care Center, Vero
Beach, after a brief illness.
She was born Jan. 25, 1893, in
McKeesport, Pa., and moved to Sebastian in 1979 from Clarksburg,
W.Va.
Mrs. Starr was a homemaker
and a member of Roseland United
Methodist Church, Roseland, and
First Baptist Church of Vero Beach.
Surviving is one daughter.
A memorial service was held
April 15 at Roseland United Methodist Church, Roseland, with the
Revs. Ralph Rivers and Carl Bray officiating.

John Clark
John T. Clark, 70, of Sebastian,
died April 10, 1997, at his residence after a prolonged illness.
He was born Aug. 12, 1926, in
Felts Mills, N.Y., and moved to Sebastian 20 years ago from his birthplace.
Mr. Clark was a retired master
electrician at Fort Drum, N.Y. He
was a member of American Legion
and International Brotherhood of
Electrical Workers, and was a U.S.
Army Air Corps veteran of World
War II.
Surviving is one stepson, Rolly
Richard Hiscott, of Sebastian.
At the family's request, there

Eugene Simon "Gene" Freeman,
68, of Sebastian, died April 10,
1997, at Sebastian River Medical
Center, Roseland, after a brief illness.
He was born July 16, 1928, in
Shamokin, Pa,, and moved to Sebastian in 1969 from Columbus,
Miss.
Mr. Freeman was a registered
nurse. He served with the U.S. Navy
Military Sealift Command and was a
U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was a member of American Legion Post No. 189 and Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post No. 10210, both
of Sebastian.
Surviving are his son, Tim Freeman, of Sebastian; and two daughters, Lisa Freeman and Paula
Freeman, both of Sebastian.
A memorial service was held
April 14 at Strunk Funeral Home,
with Elder Chris Taylor of officiating. Military honors followed, conducted by American Legion Post
No. 189 and Veterans of Foreign

George Murphy
George R. Murphy, 83, 198 Del
Monte Road, Sebastian, died April
8, 1997, at his residence after a
prolonged illness.
He was born Oct. 20, 1913, in
Mattawan, NJ., and moved to Sebastian in 198S from Rehoboth
Beach, Del.
Mr. Murphy was a retired security worker for Merck Pharmaceutical in New Jersey. He was a
member of Elks Lodge, Rahway,
NJ., and Veterans of Foreign Wars,
Sebastian, and was a U.S. Army Air
Corps veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Elaine;
two daughters, Elaine B. Murphy,
of Vail, Ariz., and Carol Hemmert,
of Stituate, Mass.; one brother,
Charles Murphy, of Knoxville,
Tenn.; one sister, Ann Cooper, of
Knoxville; and two grandchildren.
At the family's request, there will
be no visitation.

April 12 at Sebastian Cemetery, Sebastian.

George Schum
George V. Schum, 79, Sebastian, died April
16, 1997, at his home following a brief illness.
He was born April 16, 1918, in New York
City, and lived in Sebastian since moving here in
1979 from his birthplace.
Mr. Schum was an administrator for Railway
Express for 34 years. He was a licensed captain
for more than 35 years for the United States
Coast Guard.
He was a member of St. Sebastian Catholic
Church, the Sebastian Property Owners Association, the Aware Citizen and Taxpayers, the Sebastian Volunteer Fire Department and the
Sebastian Yacht Club.
He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 8009, Sebastian, where he
was a third-degree knight, and was a board
member and active participant in the Friends of
the St. Sebastian River.
A former Sebastian City Councilman, Mr.
Schum was a volunteer firefighter from 1983-
88; was a crossing guard at Sebastian Elementary for 10 years; was a member of the Sebastian
Parks and Recreation Committee; was a life
member and a founder of the Sebastian River
Area Historical Society; was a former member of
the Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce; and a former columnist for the Press
Journal.
He was elected Man-of-the-Year for 1994-95
for the Sebastian River area.
Survivors include several nieces; nephews
and cousins.
A funeral Mass was celebrated April 21 at St.
Sebastian Catholic Church. Entombment will
follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Fort
Pierce.

Geraldine M. Sheubrooks, 61, of Sebastian,
died April 18, 1997, at her residence after a
brief illness.
She was born May 7,1935, in Shenandoah,
Pa., and moved to Sebastian in 1989 from East
Greenville, Pa.
Mrs. Sheubrooks was a homemaker and a
Catholic.
Surviving are her husband, William; two
sons, James W. Undercoffler, of East Greenville,
and Jay W. Undercoffler, of North Wales, Pa.;
one daughter, Jill A. Moriarty, of Portsmouth,
N.H.; and one granddaughter.

Robert Becker
Robert H. Becker, 74, of Sebastian, died April
12, 1997, at Sebastian River Medical Center after
a prolonged illness.
He was born Sept. 19,1922, in Canajoharie,
N.Y., and lived in Indian River County for more
than 20 years.
Mr. Becker owned and operated Bob's Tool
Sharpening Services in Vero Beach. He was a
Protestant and a World War II veteran who
served in the China, Burma and India campaigns.
Surviving are two sisters, Elizabeth Traudt,
of Canajoharie, and Janet Spagnuola of Johnstown, N.Y.; and one brother, Raymond Becker,
of Johnstown, N.Y.
A memorial service was held April 23 at
Strunk Funeral Home, Sebastian, with military
honors conducted by American Legion Post No.
189 and VFW Post No. 10210, both of Sebastian.
Marilyn Tourniere
Marilyn Jean Tourniere, 62, of Micco, died
April 14, 1997, at her residence after a brief illness.
She was born Feb. 21, 1935, in Fort Dodge,
Iowa, and moved to Micco 20 years ago from
Boynton Beach.
Mrs. Tourniere was a homemaker.
Surviving are her husband of 45 years, Jean;
two sons, Larry Tourniere, of Costa Rica, and
Wayne Tourniere, of Micco; one daughter, Kim
Stuart, of Sebastian; and five grandchildren.

Ruth Serena
Ruth H. Serena, 84, of Sebastian, died April
13, 1997, at Indian River Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness.
She was born Dec. 16, 1912, in Boston,
Mass., and moved to Sebastian four years ago
from Narragansett, RI.
Mrs. Serena was a registered nurse for the
state of Rhode Island and was Episcopalian.
Surviving are her son, Peter Sprague, of Sebastian; and four grandchildren.

and was a resident of Sebastian from 1978-1996.
He retired from Gulf Oil Corp. for which he
worked in Pittsburgh and San Tome, Venezuela.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Pamela Dobson; one son, Les Cordwell; one sister, Ethel Crawford; and three grandchildren.

Dale Winford Petrie, 79, of Sebastian, died

He was born Sept. 16, 1917, in Pleasant Valley, Mich., and moved to Sebastian in 1989 from
Lake Worth.
Mr. Petrie was a wheelman for the Ann Arbor Railroad. He was a member of the United
Church of Sebastian.
Surviving are his wife of 17 years, Vivian;
two stepdaughters, Diane Carpenter, of Ashville, N.C., and Mary Jean Bennett, of Dewitt,
Mich.; two stepsons, the Rev. Dr. Benjamin
Bohren, of Orange, Calif., and Dale Bohren, of
Roswell, N.M.; eight grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.

Mary Teresa DeCanio, 76, of Sebastian, died
unexpectedly April 26, 1997, at Sebastian River
Medical Center.
She was born May 1, 1920, in New York
City, and had moved to Sebastian 12 years ago
from Delray Beach.
Mrs. DeCanio was a bookkeeper.She attended St. Sebastian Catholic Church, Sebastian,
and was a member of the Lady of the Elks, Sebastian.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph; 2
sons, Tom Trautman of Sebastian, and Robert
Trautman of Long island, N.Y.; 2 brothers,
Charles Douglas of West Palm Beach, and Ira
Douglas of Long Island, N.Y.; 2 stepsons, Gerald
DeCanio and Kenneth DeCanio, both of Long
Island; a stepdaughter, Kathaleen DeCanio of
Long Island; 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held April 29 at the Strunk
Funeral Home, Sebastian.
Catherine Delaney
Catherine Marie Delaney, 94, of Sebastian
died April 26, 1997, at her residence after a
brief illness.
She was born Aug. 25, 1902, in Syracuse,
N.Y., and had moved to Sebastian two years ago
from Middletown, N.Y.
Mrs. Delaney was a telephone operator for
Auburn Memorial Hospital, Auburn, N.Y. She
was Catholic.
Survivors include one son, John J. Delaney
of Sebastian; 2 daughters, Judith Mahalik of
Middletown, Christine Bobbet of Fulton, N.Y.; 9
grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; and 1
great-great grandchild.
Mrs. Delaney was being transferred to Langham Funeral Home in Auburn, N.Y., for services and burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery,
Fleming, N.Y.
Local arrangements were under the direction of Strunk Funeral Home, Sebastian.
William Harrell
William L. "Slim" Harrell, 96, of Wabasso,
died April 25, 1997, at Indian River Memorial
Hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. Harrell was born Sept. 16, 1900, in Hartsfield, Ga., and moved to Wabasso in 1947 from Lake Wales.
He was a grove worker and was a charter
member of First Baptist Church of Wabasso.
Friends may call from noon-2 p.m. Monday.
A service was held April 28 at Cox-Gifford
Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Cooper officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Fort Pierce.

Annabelle Matz
Annabelle Lee Matz , 84, of Vero Beach and
formerly of Barefoot Bay, died April 24, 1997, at
Integrated Health Services of Vero Beach after a
brief illness.
She was born June 10, 1912, in Reading, Pa.,
and moved to Barefoot Bay in 1974, living there
until she moved to Vero Beach last year.
She was a homemaker and a member of
Roseland United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Francis; two
daughters, Frances Pianelli, of Long Beach,
Calif., and Jean Matz, of Reading; and one
grandson.
There will be no services.

Mary Jean Collins, 70, of Micco and Indianapolis, Ind., died April 22, 1997, in Sebastian.
she was born Nov. 13, 1926, in Lincoln City, Ind.
Mrs. Collins was a contract administrator for
26 years at U.S. Naval Avionics in Indianapolis.
Surviving are her husband, Harold, of Indianapolis; two sons, Robert Collins, of Orange,
Calif., and Mark Collins, of Chicago, Ill.; one
daughter, Andrea Jean Land, of Marietta, Ga.;
one sister, Doris Jo Schulte, of Huntingburg,
Ind.; and five grandchildren.
Services were held April 26 at Hendrix Mortuary in Cumberland, Ind. She was buried in
Washington Park East Cemetery, Indianapolis.

James Howell
James David "Jim" Howell, 81, of Sebastian,
died April 21, 1997, at Sebastian River Medical
Center, Roseland, after a prolonged illness.
He was born June 8, 1915, in Dixianna, Ala.,
and moved to Sebastian in 1971 from Attalla,
Ala.
Mr. Howell was a tool and die maker for
Whitney.
Surviving are his wife of 61 vears, Nada; one
son, Lewis R. Howell, of West Palm Beach; one
daughter, Carol Freeman, of Alabama; three sisters, Girthel Guess, Fronnie Hunt, and Inez Garner, all of Alabama; four grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.
Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Strunk
Funeral Home, Sebastian.
A graveside service was held April 26 at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Fort Pierce. Arrangements were by the Strunk Funeral Home,
Sebastian.
John Baron
John F. Baron, 79, of Sebastian, died April 20,
1997, at Palm Garden of Vero Beach after a brief
illness.
He was born March 10, 1918, in Perth Amboy, N.J., and moved to Sebastian in 1989 from
Rochester, N.Y.
Mr. Baron was an aircraft painter with Bell
Aircraft, Niagara Falls.He was a member of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 10210, Sebastian; American Legion Post No. 189, Sebastian,
and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; one son, Michael J. Baron, of Walworth, N.Y., one daughter,
Linda C. Kussee, of Hilton N.Y.; one sister, Antoinette L. Szczepanik, of Sebastian, three
grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at a later
date at veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10210, Sebastian.

Ruby Whitney
Ruby C. Whitney, 79, of Sebastian, died April
21, l997, at Sebastian River Medical Center,
Roseland, after a prolonged illness.
She was born Nov. 17, 1917, in Bainbridge,
Ga., and moved to Sebastian in 1958 from Palm
Beach County.
Mrs. Whitney retired from Hale Groves,
Vero Beach, after 28 years.She attended the
First Baptist Church of Wabasso.She was a former member of Moose Lodge No. 1767, Sebastian, and of the Rebekahs.
Surviving are four daughters, JoAnn Hoskins, of Sneads Ferry, N.C., Geri Brock and Mary
Hagle, both of Sebastian, and Ester Rymer, of
Vero Beach; two sons, James W. Bailey, of Orlando, and Earcel D. Bailey Jr., of Roseland; 18
grandchildren-, 24 great-grandchildren; and
three great-great-grandchildren,
The funeral was held April 25 at Strunk Funeral Home, Vero Beach, with the Rev. Jerry
Cooper officiating. interment will be in Crestlawn Cemetery, Vero Beach.
Louise Neidig
Louise F. Neidig, 90, of Sebastian, died April
21, 1997, at Integrated Health Services of Vero
Beach after a prolonged illness.
She was born Nov. 29, 1906, in Gibbstown,
N.J., and moved to Sebastian 10 years ago from
Dover, Del.
Mrs. Neidig attended Roseland United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Dorothy Fuchs,
of Sebastian; three grandchildren; and six great-
grandchildren.
At the family's request, there will be no repose or visitation. No services are scheduled.

Neidig's memory.
Mrs. Neidig was a member of the Indian
River Cremation Society.
Benjamin Garufi
Benjamin S. Garufi, 76, of Sebastian, died
April 8, 1997, at Bethel Health Care, Bethel,
Conn., after a prolonged illness.
He was born July 28, 1920, in Bridgeport,
Conn., and moved to Sebastian in 1984 from
Danbury, Conn.He moved to Danbury five
months ago.
Mr. Garufi was a truck driver for E & F Construction, Danbury, for 20 years; a member of
Ahe Teamsters Union, Florida; and the Polish
American Club, Sebastian.
Surviving are one son, Joseph Garufi, of
New Fairfield, Conn.; one sister, Martha Bruno,
of Queens, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.
The funeral was held April 11, 1997, in Danbury. Interment was at Prince of Peace Cemetery, Brookfield, Conn.
