Marie Jane Hoock
Marie Jane Hoock, age 76, of Fort Pierce, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at her residence after a long illness.
Born Aug. 10, 1924, in Millburn, N.J., she had been a resident of Fort Pierce for the past 13 years coming from Springfield, N.J.
Prior to her retirement she had been an accountant with CR Bard Pharmaceutical in New Jersey for 18 years. She was a veteran of World War II serving in the Navy.
Survivors include: her two daughters, Jane Keltgen of Gainesville, Va. and Judy Ritter of Okeechobee; three sisters, Janet Dunn of Chicago, Ill., Jessie Ferraro and Florence Ward both of Fort Pierce; a brother, Leonard Sutera of Forked River, N.J.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was held Saturday, Jan. 27, at 10 a.m. at St. Anastasia Catholic Church in Fort Pierce. Interment was held in St. Teresa's Cemetery, in Summit, N.J.
Out of town arrangements are under the direction of Smith & Smith Funeral Home in Springfield, N.J.
Those who wish may make contributions to Hospice of the Treasure Coast, P.O. Box 1748, Fort Pierce, Fla. 34954.
Arrangements are under the direction of Aycock Funeral Home in Fort Pierce.

Melva May Sauer
Melva May Sauer, age 87, of Okeechobee, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at her residence. Born May 3, 1913, in Belleville, Ill. to Joseph and Mary Lowe, Mrs. Sauer had been a resident of Okeechobee since 1997, formerly residing in Fort Lauderdale. She was retired from First National Bank of Pompano after over 20 years as a bank teller.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Lorraine Emil Sauer; brothers, Joseph Lowe, Stanley Lowe, Richard Lowe, Carl Lowe; and, sister, Lillie Beaumont.
Survivors include: her daughter, Patsy Lee Gelatka (Michael) of Okeechobee; one grandson, Michael J. Gelatka Jr. (Starr) of Lynchburg, Va.; one granddaughter, Lorraine Gelatka (Mark) of Thaxton, Va.; two great-grandsons, Mark Jr. and Michael J. Gelatka III; two great-granddaughters, Alyssa Ann Bender and Adia Rae Gelatka; one sister-in-law, Garnet Lowe of Belleville, Ill.; and, several nieces and nephews.
There will no visitation or services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Okeechobee, P.O. Box 1548, Okeechobee, Fla. 34973.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

Billy DeWayne Foley
Billy DeWayne Foley, age 28, of Okeechobee, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at his residence after a long battle with brain cancer. Born May 29, 1972, Mr. Foley was a lifetime resident of Okeechobee. His many interests included Harley Davidsons, Mod and Muscle cars.
Survivors include: his mother, Sandy Smith of Okeechobee; father, Billy Joe Foley of Okeechobee; son Billy James "B.J." Foley of Okeechobee; two brothers, Robert William Smith (Melissa) of Okeechobee and Joseph Marion Foley (Stacie) of Clinton, N.C.; sister, Tammy Foley of Okeechobee; maternal grandmother, Mary E. Griffin of Auburn, Ala.; four aunts, Shirley Ann Benson (Charles) of Auburn, Ala., Margie Kibbey (Ray) of Gulfport, Miss., Jessie Mae Scott (Cecil) and Retha Mae Scott all of Jay; uncle, Robert Henry Smith of Ocean Springs, Miss.; and several cousins. Additionally, he will missed by special friends, Charles Morgan, Charles Morgan Jr., Dawn Marie Morgan, Betty Cottrell and family, Anita Daniels and Nezzie Howling.
Visitation will be at the Buxton Funeral Home on Wednesday, Jan. 31, from 4 until 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m. in the Buxton Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Vince Rizzo of the Vince Rizzo Ministries in Fort Myers, officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

Jerry Micco Sr.
Jerry Micco Sr., age 60, of the Brighton Reservation in Okeechobee, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in Tampa. Mr. Micco was born Oct. 1, 1940, in Big Cypress.
Survivors include: five sons, Vincent Micco, Jerry Micco Jr., Sam Micco, Charlie Micco and Leon Micco; two daughters, Rita Micco and Alicia Sanchez; 11 grandchildren; one brother, Bill Micco; and, two sisters Louise Cypress and Jenny Shore.
Graveside funeral services and interment will be conducted at the Ortona Cemetery in Ortona, on Tuesday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Vincent Micco of the Chickee Baptist Church in Hollywood, officiating.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

Charles W. "Frisky" Farr
Charles W. "Frisky" Farr, age 93, a lifetime resident of Lodi, N.Y., died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at the Schulyer Hospital in Montour Falls, N.Y.
Mr. Farr was born on July 23, 1909, in Lodi, N.Y., the son of the late Harry and Pearl Farr. Upon graduation from high school he attended Cook Academy in Montour Falls and operated a farm in Lodi, N.Y. Mr. Farr operated Farr Brothers Construction for 35 years, upon his retirement in 1970, he wintered in Okeechobee, where he was a member of the Moose Lodge and at the time of his death, the oldest member. He had served as the Town of Lodi tax assessor and had been very active in organizing little league and the junior league baseball in the area during the 1950's.
Preceded in death by: his wife, Gertrude; brother, Richard Farr; and sister, Pauline Bales.
Survivors include: two sons, Herbert (Robin) Farr and Harry (Alice Detrick) Farr of Lodi, N.Y.; grandchildren, Lisa, David, Sam, Herb, Jr., Tom and Debra; several great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews also survive him.
A memorial service will be held at the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 173 in Okeechobee. Burial will be held at the West Lodi Cemetery. The date and time of the spring burial will be announced by the Covert Funeral Homes of Ovid, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Lodi Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 278, Lodi, N.Y. 14860.
All arrangements have been entrusted to the Covert Funeral Homes, N.Y.

Dennis W. Gubler
Dennis W. Gubler, age 54, of Tampa, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at his residence after a battle with cancer.
Mr. Gubler was born on Nov. 4, 1948, in Fort Pierce. Mr. Gubler graduated from Dan McCarty High School in 1966, where he was active in the school band as a trumpet player. This allowed him to attend the University of Alabama as a member of the marching band. He graduated from the university with a B.S. in accounting in 1970 and was employed by the Veterans Administration Hospital Fiscal Service in the same year, coming to the Tampa area in 1978 to take position of Chief Fiscal Officer of the James A. Haley VA Hospital. Over the course of 32 years of VA service, Dennis was awarded numerous recognitions, awards and commendations from various individuals and entities for his contributions made to the James A. Haley VA Hospital and the entire VA financial community in the area of financial education and data management. Among these awards were the Acting Secretary of VA Commendation Award, the Regional Director's Commendation Award and the Chief Financial Officer's Commendation. On July 16, 1996, he was awarded the highest recognition given to a CFO, The National Financial Management of Veterans Health Administration Award, presented for his outstanding achievement and contributions in the financial field.
Mr. Gubler was active in the Forest Hills United Methodist Church, serving for many years as the Chairman of the Finance Committee and currently on the Board of Directors for the SONbeam Academy day-care.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ward Gubler.
Survivors include: his wife of 32 years, Dena; his sons, Derek and Daryl; Derek's fiancee, Gillian; his mother, Beth; his sister, Becky (Tim) Mosley; and his nieces and nephews also survive him.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m., at the Forest Hills United Methodist Church, 904 W. Linebaugh Ave., in Tampa.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either the Forest Hills Methodist Church Memorial Fund, or LifePath Hospice, 3010 W. Azeele St., Tampa, Fla. 33609, an organization that greatly helped the family in Dennis' last days.
All arrangements have been under the direction of the Blount and Curry Funeral Home Carrolwood Chapel in Tampa.

Dorothy Lynn Shelton
Dorothy Lynn Shelton, age 74, of Okeechobee, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at her residence.
Ms. Shelton was born on March 28, 1928, in Bowling Green, Ky., the daughter of Patrick M. and Mildred (Thomas) Shelton. Ms. Shelton was an antique dealer by trade.
She is survived by her cousin, Shirley Lewis, of Bowling Green, Ky.
There will be no visitation or services.
All arrangements are entrusted to the loving care of the Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Jack Arthur Halsey
Jack Arthur Halsey, age 71, of Okeechobee, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Raulerson Hospital.
Mr. Halsey was born on Oct. 15, 1931, in Miami and had been a resident of Okeechobee since 1985. Mr. Halsey served in the U.S. Navy and the National Guard and was a member of the Okeechobee VFW Post 10579, where he was the Junior Vice Commander. Mr. Halsey retired after serving 20 years with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 31. Mr. Halsey enjoyed sailing as a past time.
Preceded in death by two sisters, Patt and Phyllis.
Survivors include: his loving wife of 22 years, Kathy Halsey of Okeechobee; two daughters, Lillian (Chad) Richardson of Howey-in-the-Hills and Diane (Andrew) Strauss of Coral Springs; two grandsons, Bradler and Jack Richardson of Howey-in-the-Hills; three granddaughters, Lisa Richardson of Howey-in-the-Hills, Hannah and Emma Strauss of Coral Springs; two brothers, Hank (Arlene) Halsey of Russellville, Ark. and Quentin (June) Halsey of Oak Brook, Ill.; and one sister, Lois Cooke of Orlando also survives him.
There will be no visitation or services.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

Wilford "Jitterbug" Garner III
Wilford "Jitterbug" Garner III, age 65, of Okeechobee, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Raulerson Hospital.
Mr. Garner was born on June 13, 1937, in Lake Village, Ark. Mr. Garner had been a resident of Okeechobee since 1960. He graduated from High School in McGee, Ark.; was a retired mason from Brown Construction Company in Jupiter; and recently worked for Mr. Frank Altobello. He was a dedicated Deacon with Hope Ministry Center Church of God. He loved watching old western movies; the Dodgers; and enjoyed playing baseball as well as singing gospel music. Jitterbug was famous for his barbecue cooking. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother and friend who will be greatly missed.
Preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Dorothy.
Survivors include: three sons, Michael (Mildred) Peterson, Terald Garner of Okeechobee and Wilford (Paula) Garner of Virginia Beach, Va.; four daughters, Susan (Charles) Jones, Jacqueline Garner, Sheila Garner and Angela Garner, all of Okeechobee; 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roy James Garner of Okeechobee and Lee (Philomina) Edward Hooper of Austin, Texas; two sisters, Minnie (George) Kensey of Carson, Calif. and Mildred Smith of Ben Harbor, Mich., also survives him.
Visitation will be held on Friday, Jan. 31, from 4 until 7 p.m., at the Hope Ministry Center Church of God, 1000 N.E. 14 Ave.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at 11 a.m., at the Hope Ministry Center Church of God, with Bishop Kenneth E. Williams, officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

Mary Vivian Wilcox
Mary Vivian Wilcox, age 87, of Okeechobee, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at The Manors at Hobe Sound.
Mrs. Wilcox was born on March 10, 1915, in Chaires. Mrs. Wilcox had been a resident of Okeechobee since 1947. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Okeechobee Garden Club.
Preceded in death by: her husband, F.E. Jack Wilcox; and son, Fred Emory Wilcox.
Survivors include: one daughter, Opal (Ed) LeNeve Gilliam of Jacksonville; two brothers, John Wilcox of Hobe Sound and Rooker Wilcox of Okeechobee; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren also survive her.
There will be no visitation or services.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

Pauline Ora May Harrington
Pauline Ora May Harrington, age 81, of Fort Lauderdale died on Jan. 26, 2003, at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale.
She was born on Feb. 6, 1921, in Pennsylvania and was a secretary for the building and zoning department for Broward County.
Survivors include: one daughter, Janet Certain of Okeechobee; one brother, Donald Mong of Mansfield, Ohio; two sisters, Martha Miller of Mansfield, Ohio, and Arnita Phillips of Jamestown, N.Y.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren also survive her.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, from 5 until 7 p.m., at the Bass Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at 3 p.m., at the Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Arlan Cook of the Northside Baptist Church, officiating.
Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Jerry Lee Conklin
Jerry Lee Conklin, age 59, of Okeechobee, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at the V.A. Medical Center in West Palm Beach. Born Dec. 6, 1941 in Des Moines, Iowa, Mr. Conklin had been a resident of Okeechobee since 1986. He was an avid competition shooter and enjoyed fishing. A member of the Shrine Club, Mr. Conklin was involved with the Roe Fulkerson Lodge in Hollywood, Mahi Shrine in Miami and Okeechobee Shrine. He was also a member of the Florida Peace Officers Association.
Preceded in his death by his father, Leon Blaine Conklin.
Survivors include: his wife, Kathleen A. Conklin of Okeechobee; mother, Bessie Marie Wid of Delta, Colo.; one brother, Donald Blaine Conklin (Judy) of Delta, Colo.; four sons, W. Joseph Conklin (Dana), Jonathan B. Conklin of Hollywood, Richard D. Heatley, Jr. (Tammy) of Old Town,and Mark E. Heatley (Audra) of Okeechobee ; one daughter, Penny A. Heatley of Williston; one grandson, David Conklin of Hollywood; and two granddaughters, Melissa Heatley of Old Town and Alexandra Heatley of Okeechobee.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Conklin residence.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.
