Florence Doan Nichols
Florence Doan Nichols, age 95, of Balsam, N.C. died Thursday, August 29, 2002, at Raulerson Hospital in Okeechobee.
Mrs. Nichols was born on April 19, 1907, in Joplin, Mo., she lived in Balsam, N.C. for the past 20 years and lived in West Palm Beach and Hollywood most of her life.
Mrs. Nichols was a Sunday School teacher most of her life serving last with the Dellwood Baptist Church, Waynesville, N.C. She was one of the first members of the Sheridan Hills Baptist Church in Hollywood, having served there in many capacities. In her early years she devoted many hours to helping the Salvation Army. Mrs. Nichols was an active business person including: service with the Post Office during World War II era, secretary to a Palm Beach doctor; owning and managing the Garden of Eden Nursery in West Palm Beach and Hollywood; a real estate broker in Florida for the past 45 years; and in her 80's she even drove over the mountains in North Carolina carrying care packages to the needy and praying with them.
Preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Nichols in 1987.
Survivors include: four sons, Kenneth R. Nichols Sr. of Okeechobee, Walter R. (Jackie) Nichols of Merced, Calif., James C. (Sara) Nichols of Balsam, N.C. and Dr. Cecil B. (Malena) Nichols of Hollywood; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; and her brother, Billy Bob (Anna) Doan of Meadowbridge, W. Va., also survives her.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, Aug. 31, at 9 a.m., at the First Baptist Church in Okeechobee, with Pastor James Garner officiating. Interment will be held graveside, at 2 p.m., at the Hollywood Memorial Gardens in Hollywood. Reception will follow at 3725 S. Ocean Dr., Hollywood, Fla. 33019.
Memorials may be made to: the Building Fund for the Sheridan Hills Baptist Church in Hollywood; the Dellwood Baptist Church in Waynesville, N.C.; and the Gideon's International, West Haywood Camp in Waynesville, N.C.
All arrangements are entrusted under the loving care of the Bass Funeral Home.

Henry Samuel Jenkin
Henry Samuel Jenkin, age 74, of Okeechobee, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at his residence.
He was born March, 20, 1928, in Orange, N.J., and had been a resident of Okeechobee for nine years. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea during WWII and was a member of the American Legion and Moose Lodge.
Mr. Jenkin was preceded in death by one brother, Fred Jenkin.
Survivors include: his devoted wife of 42 years, Edna F. Jenkin of Okeechobee; one son, Henry Robert Jenkin (Stacey Griffith) of Lake Worth; two daughters, June (Duncan) Melvin of Hialeah and Wendy (Michael) Romer of Kissimmee; three grandsons, Scott Melvin and Kyle Melvin of Hialeah and Cory Romer of Kissimmee; three granddaughters, Dallas Carter of Miami, Lynn Romer of Kissimmee and Loryssa Griffith of Lake Worth; two step-grandchildren, Mark and Stephanie of Lake Worth; one brother, Buddy; and one sister, Stella, both of California.
There will be no visitation or services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Okeechobee, P.O. Box 1548, Okeechobee, Florida 34973.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

Edna L. Hickman
Edna L. Hickman, age 71, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002. There will be a memorial service held for her on Thursday, Sept. 5, at 6:30 p.m., at the Treasure Island Baptist Church in Okeechobee.

Thurza A. Whiddon
Thurza A. Whiddon, age 84, of Okeechobee, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at Okeechobee Health Care Facility.
Mrs. Whiddon was born on May 15, 1918, in Okeechobee to Walter N. Gray, Sr. and Elsie M. Hancock Gray. Mrs. Whiddon was a lifetime resident of Okeechobee and a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Whiddon and son, Howard Pickering.
Survivors include: two sons, John T. Pickering of Okeechobee and Abriel G. Pickering of Coleman, Ala.; one daughter, Dolly Lou Eubanks of Okeechobee; 18 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; one brother, Walter N. Gray, Jr. of Okeechobee; three sisters, Edith L. Brown and Martha Rutherford, both of Okeechobee and Elsie Pervis of Columbus, S.C.
Visitation will be held on Friday, Aug. 30, from 10 until 11 a.m., at the Buxton Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted following visitation at 11 a.m., in the Buxton Funeral Home Chapel, with J.R. Stanley officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
All arrangements have been under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

Kathie Jo Riley
Kathie Jo Riley, 47, of Okeechobee, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at her residence.
Born Sept. 13, 1954, in Blossburg, Pa., Mrs. Riley had been a resident of Okeechobee for 13 years. She was an employee of Morgan's Furniture and enjoyed bingo, crafts, yard sales and being a 'softball mom'.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Lillian Morgan.
Survivors include: her husband of 29 years, Thomas Riley, Sr. of Okeechobee; one son, Tombo Riley, Jr., of Okeechobee; one daughter, Kim Hargraves (Steve) of Okeechobee; granddaughter, Megan Hargraves of Okeechobee; father, Audley Morgan of Okeechobee; four brothers, Steve Morgan (Wanda), Jim Morgan (Yvonne), Gordie Morgan (Malissa) all of Okeechobee, and Mike Morgan (Brenda) of Winter Haven; four sisters, Wanda Lewis (Bill) of West Jefferson, N.C., Cindy Crouch (Sam) of Haymarket, Va., Sharon Poirier (Claude) and Linda Weir (Don) of Okeechobee; 22 nephews and nieces; and, five great nephews and nieces.
Funeral services were conducted at the Buxton Funeral Home on Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at 2 p.m. with Bobby White officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Okeechobee. P.O. Box 1548, Okeechobee, Fla., 34973.
All arrangements are under the direction ad care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

William Conrad McKenery
William Conrad McKenery, age 63, of Okeechobee, died Thursday, August 22, 2002, at his residence.
Mr. McKenery was born on Feb. 6, 1939, in Belle Vernon, Pa., Mr. McKenery, formerly of Houston, Texas, had been a resident of Okeechobee for six months. He was a member of the Rehoboth Presbyterian Church in Belle Vernon, Pa. His hobbies included carpentry, old cars, camping and gardening.
He was preceded in death by his father, Plummer McKenery and one brother.
Survivors include: his loving wife of 24 years, Sheryle McKenery of Okeechobee; one son, Duane McKenery of Beaverton, Ore.; one daughter, Deborah (John, Jr.) Kubina of Banning, Pa.; three grandchildren, John Kubina III, Angela Kubina and Amanda Kubina, all of Banning, Pa.; mother, Mildred Hendrickson of Okeechobee; one brother, David (Sue) McKenery of Ripley, N.Y.; and three sisters, Dorothe (Wayne) Wakeley of Okeechobee, Donna (Jim) Gardner of Belle Vernon, Pa., and Mary Smith of Ripley, N.Y.
A memorial service was held on Friday, Aug. 23, at the First United Methodist Church in Okeechobee, with Pastor Fred Gardner officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Okeechobee, P.O. Box 1548, Okeechobee, Fla. 34973.
All arrangements have been under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

Robert "Coach" Hardman
Robert "Coach" Hardman, age 72, died on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002.
Coach Hardman was born on Feb. 2, 1930, in Charleston, W. Va. He taught in the math department at Dan McCarty High School and Fort Pierce Central High School, retiring in 1992. He coached both football and basketball at John Carroll High School, Fort Pierce; coached baseball and football at Central High School and coached Little League for over 40 years. He was Powderpuff Girls Football Coach for many years.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Ray Hardman.
Survivors include: his wife of 48 years, Ann Hardman of Fort Pierce; sons and daughter-in-law, Bob and Sherri Hardman, Jr. of Okeechobee, Bill and Zandra Hardman and Brian and Georgette Hardman, all of Fort Pierce; brothers, Jim Hardman of Murphy, N.C., Harry Hardman of Austin, Texas; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Visitation to be held on Sunday, Aug. 25, from 5 until 8 p.m., at the Haisley-Hobbs Funeral Home in Fort Pierce.
Funeral services will be Monday, Aug. 26, at 10 a.m., at Haisley-Hobbs Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robbie Neiman officiating. Entombment will be at Riverview Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Fort Pierce American Little League, P.O. Box 13322, Fort Pierce, Fla. 34947.
All arrangements have been under the direction of the Haisley-Hobbs Funeral Home, Inc. of Fort Pierce.

Doyle Quillie Hazellief
Doyle Quillie Hazellief, age 70, of Bluefield, died Wednesday, August 21, 2002, in Lake Placid.
Mr. Hazellief was born on Jan. 2, 1932, in Fort Pierce (Bluefield).
Preceded in death by: his mother, Martha Lindsey Hazellief; and one grandson, Joshua Dewayne Rigdon.
Survivors include: his wife, Syble Peterson Hazellief; three sons, Doyle Dewayne Hazellief of Brooksville, Darrell Wetzel and wife, Bonita Hazellief of Mauk, Ga., and Gene Allen Hazellief of Vero Beach; one daughter, Vickie Elaine Murphy and her husband, Ronnie of LaBelle; loved as daughters and sons, DeWayne Rigdon, Gail Atcheson, Brenda Hazellief, Dwight and Cathy McCorts and Angie Sanchez; grandchildren, Doyle James Rigdon, Clifton Allen Rigdon, Travis Dewaine Hazellief, Margaret Elaine Rigdon, Shelene Marie Hazellief, Averil Nichole Hazellief, Ashley Spring Hazellief, Kayla Danielle Hazellief, Shania Lynn Hazellief; loved as grandchildren, Sha Atcheson, Chase Bell, Koty Lewis, Justin Southerland, Jim Williams, Junior Sanchez, Marcel Sanchez and Ben Sanchez; four great-grandchildren, Sahley Jean Bourgault, Victoria Verna-Dean Williams, James Ian-Robert Williams, Christopher Allen Rigdon; his parents, Wilson and Lela Hazellief; six brothers and two sisters, Clarence and Helen, Ralph and Janette, Earl and Louise, Woodrow and Jan, Allen and Francis, Tommy Joe and Kay Hazellief, Elaine and Edward Brown, Ruth and Calvin Fryar.
Viewing will be held on Monday, Aug. 26, from 6 until 9 p.m., at the Bass Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 10 a.m., at the Okeechobee Cattlemen's Arena.
All arrangements have been under the loving care of the Bass Funeral Home.

James A. "Jim" Stafford
James A. "Jim" Stafford, age 81, of Williston, died Tuesday, August 20, 2002, at North Florida Regional Hospital in Gainesville.
Mr. Stafford was born in Williston and was the great-grandson of Jesse M. Willis, founder of the Town of Williston, Florida. He was elected Mayor of Lake Worth in 1953 and was the youngest person ever to hold that office. In 1957, he was elected to a seat on the Lake Worth City Commission and was also a candidate for the Florida State House of Representatives in 1963. Mr. Stafford's business career was in sales and public relation's work. He is a former president of the Lake Worth Board of Realtors; a past commander of American Legion Post 60 in Pahokee; a former member of the Palm Beach County Beach Acquisition Advisory Committee; a former member of the Palm Beach County Area Planning Board; and a past member of the Willis Family Cemetery Board. After graduation from Lake Worth High School in 1938, he played baseball in the Piedmont League. Mr. Stafford enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, qualified for OCS and was separated from the Air Corps in 1946 as 1st Lt. He served overseas with the 14th (Flying Tiger) Air Force. He was also a member of the VFW, Elks, Lions and Exchange. He moved to Williston in 1982 upon retirement.
Preceded in death by: his wife, Mary Ruth (Ferrell) Stafford; sister, Lucy S. Gowen; and brother, Harry A. Stafford.
Survivors include: a daughter, Sandra Stafford Reckseit of Gainesville; son, Captain William S. Stafford KCTJ of Okeechobee; two sisters, Louise Keller of Williston and Helen Stafford Newkirk of Tampa; three grandchildren; and four great great-grandchildren also survive him.
The family requests that any contributions in his memory be made to the Jesse Mercer Willis Cemetery Fund, c/o Reckseit, 7804 S.W. 47 Ct., Gainesville, Fla. 32608.
All arrangements have been under the direction and care of the Knauff Funeral Home, Williston, Florida.

Brenda Lee Brown
Brenda Lee Brown, age 52, of Okeechobee, died Monday, August 19, 2002, at Raulerson Hospital.
She was born Sept. 11, 1949, in Fort Lauderdale. Mrs. Brown had been a resident of Okeechobee since 1985.
Survivors include: one son, Craig Brown of Antioch, Calif.; one daughter, Shannon (Scotty, Sr.) Shiver of Fort Pierce; two grandchildren, Scotty Shiver, Jr. and Caleb Shiver, both of Fort Pierce; mother, Bernice J. Simmons of Okeechobee; and one sister, Debbie (John) O'Conner of Wilton Manor also survives her.
A memorial service will be conducted at the Buxton Funeral Home on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Okeechobee, P.O. Box 1548, Okeechobee, Fla. 34973.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

James C. Black
James C. Black, 75, of Okeechobee, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at Susan's Country Manor.
Residing in Lapeer, Mich., from 1948 until 1985, Mr. Black and his wife June were extremely active members of Grace Episcopal Church.
After attending Eastern Michigan University, Mr. Black obtained his master's degree from the University of Michigan. He then taught within the Lapeer County School System from 1948 until 1955, after which he served as principal of White Junior High School until he retired in 1983.
After retiring, he and his wife June enjoyed many years of golfing with friends in Perrinton, Mich., and Bradenton. The Blacks were winter residents of Bradenton for 17 years, and summer residents of Perrinton, Mich.
After his wife died in 2000, Mr. Black moved to Okeechobee. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Wright Black.
He is survived by: two sons, Jeff Black (Raia) of Okeechobee, and Colby Black (Paula) of Frostproof; one daughter, Candice Walker (Paul) of Okeechobee; seven grandchildren - grandson, James Black; granddaughters, Kristan and Kara Black, Evelyn and Beth Walker, all of Okeechobee; and granddaughters Amanda and Casey Black, both of Frostproof.
In addition, he is survived by one brother, Richard Black (Jeanne) of Grand Rapids, Mich., and one sister, Jean Morgan (Rick) of New Smyrna Beach. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Judy Warner and Naomi Wright, both of Perrinton, Mich.
A memorial service will be scheduled in Michigan at a later date. There will be no local visitation or services.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Okeechobee, P.O. Box 1548, Okeechobee, Fla., 34973.

Peggy Josephine Kauffman
Peggy Josephine Kauffman, age 74, of Okeechobee, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at Raulerson Hospital.
She was born on Oct. 14, 1927, in Itman, W.Va. Mrs. Kauffman had been a resident of Okeechobee since 1972. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and Moose Lodge. For many years she was actively involved with the Red Cross of Okeechobee. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Kauffman.
Survivors include: two sons, Donald (Millie) Cline of Chipley, and Ronald (Kim) Cline of Okeechobee; two daughters, Kathy (Benji) Sellers of Okeechobee and Carol Ann Smith of Hyattsville, Md.; one grandson, Clay Sellers of Okeechobee; five granddaughters, Christina and Leslie McMahan, Angela, Ronda and Alicia Cline, all of Okeechobee; three great-granddaughters, Julian Silvas, Victoria Cline and Araya Baldwin, all of Okeechobee; and one sister, Estella Absher of Monroeville, Ohio.
The family will receive friends at the Buxton Funeral Home on Thursday, Aug. 22, from 6 until 7 p.m.
A memorial service will be conducted following visitation at 7 p.m.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

Cecil Elmer Redding
Cecil Elmer Redding, age 77, of Okeechobee, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2002, in Okeechobee.
He was born Oct. 29, 1924, in Fellsmere. Mr. Redding was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include: three sons, Raymond Redding of Okeechobee, Billy Redding of Arizona, and Kenny Redding of Ft. Myers; two daughters, Sandra Redding of Arizona and Linda Redding of Massachusetts; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
There will be no visitation.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 1 p.m. at Florida National Cemetery. Interment will be at Florida National Cemetery.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Bass Funeral Home.
