Rebekah (Becky) Fuller Peeler
Peeler, Rebekah (Becky) Fuller, on Tuesday morning, December 18th in a comfortable room at Hernando Pasco Hospice, a formidable woman passed away quietly after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer. The recordable “facts” of the life of Rebekah (Becky) Allison Fuller Peeler don’t begin to capture the full, wonderful, complex person that she was. She was born in Montgomery, Alabama on August 20, 1940 to Rebekah Farrior and Jack Fuller-both multigenerational Florida natives. She moved to the State that she called home for 63 years in 1944. She grew up in Palma Ceia and graduated from Plant High School in 1958. She was a force of nature, living her life out loud for 67 years. Dying was one of the few things that Becky Peeler did quietly. Becky was bright, curious, quick-witted, resourceful, resilient, and opinionated. She had a hearty and easy laugh that she shared generously. She was gracious, forgiving, stubborn, and sometimes bossy. She was always authentic-there was no pretense or putting on airs with her. She didn’t have time for that. She was comfortable in her own skin. Becky was not the type of woman who would complain of having an identity crisis. She knew exactly who she was and what her purpose was every day of her life. She committed her life to be the best mother and grandmother she could be, to love God (always) and to love her neighbors (most of the time). Her proudest accomplishment in life was being the mother of her children Lynda Peeler Sartain of Dade City, Florida, David Peeler and Brian Peeler, both of Brooksville, Florida, and grandmother to Katy Sartain and to Clint, Madison, Joshua, Sarah Delaney, and Sinclair Peeler. She also dearly loved her “outlaws”--daughters-in-law Lisa and Laura Peeler and son-in-law Jim Sartain. She refused to use the term “in-law”-preferring to call them her “son- or daughters-in-love.” She had a special love for her sister, Cornelle Potts of Lawrenceville, Georgia, and shared a short-hand language that could only happen when two people shared the same beginnings. Becky loved her friends with the same unbridled enthusiasm that she approached everything else in her life--not in the slightly detached and convenient way that people tend to approach friendships in later life-but with full commitment and presence. She was the kind of friend who would not hesitate to roll up her sleeves and get a little dirty if life and circumstances required it. She knew relationships weren’t always “pretty” and tried her best to work through the ugly parts. Friendships to her were never lost or irreparably broken. They might sometimes be temporarily misplaced-but never ended. She was a gifted cook who never met a person whose disposition or health couldn’t be improved a little by a plate of her home-cooked southern food and a large glass of sweet tea. Food and cooking was a love language that she most often spoke with friends and family. She believed that circumstances sometimes required dessert to be eaten first. She had an uncanny ability of knowing which stores had the best cuts of meats at the best sales prices and would hold full and lengthy conversations on just this subject (much to the consternation of her son-in-love.). She believed in butter and sugar and other “real” ingredients. She had little use for anything that could be cooked in a microwave or that came from a boxed mix. This same love of caring for others through food led her to help begin the food pantry ministry at First Baptist Church of Dade City where she was a member for 35 years. Becky also shared her unwavering faith in God just as generously. Even as cancer and the treatments began to ravage her body, she viewed her numerous trips to Moffitt for chemotherapy and radiation treatments as a way to witness to others about God’s saving grace. She referred to Moffitt as her “mission field.” She taught Bible study for most of her adult life. She faithfully read the Bible from Genesis to Revelations each year and refused to read the paper before she read the Word. She, like her family, believed in God’s promises. We believe Jesus’ words that His Father’s house has many mansions. And because of the person she was, the life she lived and what she believed, we have no doubt she will be living in a big one on the hill. You’ll recognize her house immediately--she will be the one hanging over the rail of her front porch beckoning you to come and join her for a snack and something cold to drink. A memorial party celebrating Becky’s life will be held early in the New Year. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made in her name to Hernando Pasco Hospice, First Baptist Church Food Pantry Ministry, or Moffitt Cancer Center.
