Donald Abbott Sr.

Donald Abbott Sr., 87, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003, after a long illness.

Mr. Abbott was born May 27, 1916, in Boxford, Mass., and moved to this area in October 1978 from Groveland, Mass. He served in the U.S. Navy's Construction Battalion Unit 1006 during World War II. He was a retired salesman. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Punta Gorda, life member of Elks in Massachusetts and charter member of Elks 2626 in Punta Gorda, Punta Gorda Country Club and Blind Golfers Association, participating in two tournaments in Atlantic City, N.J. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Punta Gorda.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille; son, Donald Abbott Jr. of Punta Gorda; sisters, Pauline Hill of Boxford and Barbara Polinchuk of Crestview, Fla.; and brother, Richard Abbott of Groveland.

Memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association, Attn: Memorials, P.O. Box 21475, St. Petersburg, FL 33742. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte.

Katherine M. Robinson

Katherine M. Robinson, 86, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and formerly of Huntington, N.Y., died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003.

She was born Oct. 18, 1916, in Cambridge, Mass. She was a graduate of Radcliffe College of Harvard University in 1938, and Katharine Gibbs School in Boston, Mass., in 1939. She served during World War II in the psychological warfare branch of the U.S. Army, stationed in Algiers, Italy. She married William R. Robinson, an executive in international marketing for Exxon Corp., in 1946. She worked at WEED in Boston as assistant sales promotion manager, and as copywriter at Boston Advertising Agency. She moved to Punta Gorda in 1976. Katherine and Bill "Robbie" delivered Meals on Wheels. They enjoyed many classes at the Adult Education Center in Punta Gorda and other local activities. They were members of Isles Yacht Club.

She is survived by two sons, Christopher of Davie, Fla., and William of Holtsville, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Daniel and Kimberly Robinson of New York, and Jeffrey and Kyle Robinson of Florida; one great-grandchild, Ava; and her caregiver, Mercelin Moulton. She was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Robinson.

Funeral arrangements are by Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Homes and Cemetery, Punta Gorda.

Dale P. Robson

Dale P. "Pat" Robson, 67, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Monday, Sept. 8, 2003.

He was born March 19, 1936, in Huntington, W.Va., and moved to Punta Gorda in 1997 from Floral City, Fla. He was a graduate of Marshall University in Huntington. He retired in 1996 after 34 years as an agent with State Farm Insurance companies.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Mary; and daughter, Lea Ann of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. No services are scheduled. National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.

John C. Salter

John Calvin Salter, 57, of Portland, Ore., and Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003.

Mr. Salter was born Sept. 25, 1945, in Boston, Mass. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Vietnam War. A silversmith, he was a vendor in Seattle's Pike Street Market and later in Portland's Saturday Market for about 20 years. He lived in Husum, Wash., since about 1978. He was a political commentator. He was a seasonal resident of Port Charlotte.

Survivors include his companion, Sarah Arnold; a daughter, Rachael Salter Smith; parents, Carl and Olympia "Bicky" Salter; sisters, Carole Hodges and Deborah Chandler; brothers, Carl Salter and Joe Salter; a granddaughter, Ashley Smith; five nieces and three nephews.

The service is private. Remembrances may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Arrangements are by Riverview Abbey Funeral Home, Portland.

Dale W. Sensenig

Dale W. Sensenig, 86, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003, in Port Charlotte.

He was born Jan. 29, 1917, in Lancaster County, Pa. Dale was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941. After training in California and serving in the North Pacific Theater during World War II, he was discharged in 1945. Dale graduated from Temple University with a bachelor's degree and worked for the next 30 years in the classic parameters of manufacturing engineering. Dale worked for Bearings Co. of America, Borg-Warner Corp. and Dayand Zimmerman Consulting Engineers. He held memberships in three professional organizations: Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers, Society of Manufacturing Engineers and Real Estate Investors of Lancaster County. Dale enjoyed antique furniture refinishing, photography and boating. He was a member of Sportmans Yacht Club of Port Charlotte and an active member of Northwest Port Charlotte Homeowners Association. He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte. Dale had lived in Port Charlotte for 10 years, coming from Lancaster.

Dale is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Agnes; a son, Robert Sensenig of Washington, D.C.; and two grandsons, Patrick and Michael Sensenig, both of Washington, D.C.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte, 2230 Hariet St., Port Charlotte, with Dr. Russell Hickman officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dale's name to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238. Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte chapel.

Wayne A. Starnes

Wayne A. Starnes, 72, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Port Charlotte.

He was born March 27, 1931, in Kansas City, Mo., to James and Zella Starnes. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy. Wayne retired from Northern Illinois Gas Co. in Dixon, Ill. He and his wife moved to Port Charlotte in 1989. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, BPO Elks Lodge 770 and American Legion Post 0012, all of Dixon, and Moose Lodge 1639 of Punta Gorda, Fla.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 48 years, Judith (Rintoul) Starnes, of Port Charlotte; a daughter, Debra (Michael) Roberts, of Eldorado, Ill.; two grandsons, Douglas and Lee Roberts of Eldorado; his mother, Zella Starnes of Dixon; three brothers, Gene Starnes of Dixon, Charles Starnes of Nebraska and Richard Starnes of Illinois; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, James; and his sister, Joan Knack.

There will be no services at this time. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association for (Research), Gulf Coast Chapter, 22107 Elmira Blvd., Port Charlotte, FL 33952 Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Charlotte chapel.

Earl L. Martin

Earl L. Martin, 90, of Englewood, Fla., Fargo, N.D., and formerly of Moorhead, Minn., died peacefully Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at Bethany Homes.

Earl was born Aug. 13, 1913, in Oakport Township, Clay County, Minn., son of Roy and Helen Martin. He grew up in Clay County. He attended Clearview Grade School and graduated from Moorhead State Teachers College Campus School. He was united in marriage to Millie Sandie in 1935. They farmed the land homesteaded by his grandfather, Jasper Martin. In 1954 he started Martin Aviation, which he sold to his nephew, Gene Martin, in 1973. He retired in 1984. Earl and Millie spent their winters in Englewood since the late 1950s. He will always be remembered as a caring friend and mentor to many.

He is survived by two daughters, Lois Stein of Glyndon, Minn., and Joan (Arnold) Skarsaune of Vanvikan, Norway; one sister, Gladys Hendershott of Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother, Wayne (Shirley) Martin of Maple Grove, Minn.; three grandsons, Jay Stein of Glyndon, Jon Stein of Fargo, Gunnar Skarsaune of Leksivig, Norway; one great-grandson, Aleksander Skarsaune of Vanvikan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Millie, in 1990; grandson, Jeff Stein in 1991; and his brother, Maurice, in 2003.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead. Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead.

Bernice D. Obey

Bernice D. "Bea" Obey, 83, of Rotonda West, Fla., passed away peacefully Friday, Aug. 15, 2003, at home.

Bernice was born Jan. 17, 1920, in Grand Forks, N.D., the daughter of Ernest and Emma Kleven Johnson. She was raised from birth by her beloved aunt, Ruth Kleven Braaten. She and her husband built in Rotonda, Fla., in 1972, after living in Birmingham, Mich., for 21 years, where they raised their four children. Bea was a charter member, and past president of the Elkettes of the Clawson-Troy Elks lodge in Troy, Mich. After moving to Rotonda in 1978, Bea was actively involved in the Rotonda Elks lodge. She was co-founder and a past president of the Rotonda Lodge Elkettes. Bea was an avid golfer. She and her husband, Joe, were among the first members of the newly established Rotonda Golf and Country Club.

Bea is survived by her husband of 64 years, Joseph G. Obey; four children, Joseph of Rotonda, Jacqueline (Michael) Halpin of Englewood, Fla., Lawrence (Nancy) of Milan, Mich., and Pauline (Raymond) Brier of Monroe, Va.; her sister-in-law, Gilda Hargrave of Sarasota, Fla.; five grandchildren, Jefferson and Jason Halpin, both of Gaylord, Mich., Brittany Obey of Cool, Calif., Amanda Brier of Monroe, and Logan Obey of Milan; and a great-granddaughter, Sebastiana "Sonny" Halpin of Gaylord.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 5265 Placida Road, Grove City, Fla., which will be open to all friends.

It is asked that contributions be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238. Toale Brothers, Gulf Gate chapel, Sarasota, is in charge of arrangements.

Helen M. Sullivan

Helen M. Sullivan, 67, of Englewood, Fla., passed away peacefully Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at her Sarasota County residence.

Helen was born Nov. 4, 1935, in Boston, Mass., the daughter of Alexander and Helen (Maker) Mader. She and her husband, Robert, lived in Hanson, Mass., where they raised their five children before moving to Florida.

She is survived by her loving husband of 44 years; children, Deborah Macomber of Whitman, Mass., Kathy Anderson of Marshfield, Mass., Robert Sullivan Jr. of Buzzard's Bay, Mass., Terri McIntyre of Englewood, Fla., and Jeanne Bates of East Bridgewater, Mass.; 13 grandchildren; sisters, Margarete Panarese and Emily Gough, both of Englewood; and a brother, James Mader of Cape Coral, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood chapel. The family's services will be later in Massachusetts.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Helen's memory to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238. Arrangements are by Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood chapel.

Peggy A. Winkler

Peggy Ann Winkler, 78, of Englewood, Fla., died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at Bon Secours-Venice Nursing Care Center.

She was born Nov. 23, 1924, in Ansted, W.Va., and moved to this area 17 years ago from Belvedere, S.C. Mrs. Winkler was a homemaker and a member of Community Presbyterian Church in Englewood.

She is survived by her son, David A. (Joann) Winkler of Port Charlotte, Fla.; daughter, Patricia A. (Jim) Berna of Scottsburg, Ind.; an aunt, Georgia Morriss of Ohio; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph E. Winkler, in 1981.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at Englewood Community Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 3070 S. McCall Road. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Jennifer Turick officiating. Burial will be at Venice Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Englewood Community Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Thelma Hardee

Thelma Hardee, 93, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at her residence.

She was born May 13, 1910, in Black Hawk, Iowa. She came to DeSoto County more than 12 years ago from St. Petersburg, Fla. She was a graduate of St. Petersburg High School and Nursing School at Tampa General Hospital. She was a registered nurse and homemaker. She was a longtime member of Mount Ephraim Baptist Church in Arcadia. She was one great lady.

She is survived by a son, Edward (Starr) Hardee of Arcadia; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Burial will be on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Memorial Park in St. Petersburg. Robarts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Barbara D. Stohler

Barbara Dyches Stohler, 67, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at her residence.

She was born Dec. 22, 1935, in Olar, S.C. She came to Arcadia nine years ago from Southport, N.C. She was an owner of Stohler's Tax Preparing and Bookkeeping in Southport and worked for Eckerd Drugs in the cosmetics department in the Charleston, S.C., area for many years. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Arcadia. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Leon Ray Stohler of Arcadia; a daughter, Myra Banks; one grandchild, Crystal Jones; and one great-grandchild, Jada Judd.

Services will be in Charleston, with burial at Whispering Pines Cemetery in Moncks Corner, S.C.

Memorial donations may be made to Goose Creek United Methodist Church, c/o Robarts Funeral Home, 163 N. Brevard Ave., Arcadia, FL 34266. Robarts Funeral Home, Arcadia chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Ruby J. Williams

Ruby J. Williams, 78, of Arcadia, Fla., died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003.

She was born June 9, 1925, in South Carolina. She moved to Arcadia in 1995 from Ocala, Fla. She was a retired sales clerk in retail sales. She attended Beacon of Hope of Arcadia.

She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Harris of Stevenville, Texas, and Donna (Marvin) Daugherty of Arcadia; five grandchildren, Sherry Adams, Erica Coronado, Ryan Harris, Michelle Dechman and Kim Howard; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., with services at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, 50 N. Hillsboro Ave. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 2100 S. Tamiami Trail, Suite A, Venice, FL 34293. Arrangements are by Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, Arcadia.

Roger Dean Anderson

Roger Dean Anderson, 74, of Claremont, N.H., and a former resident of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Saturday evening, Sept. 7, 2002 at his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Michigan City, Ind., on Jan. 6, 1928, the son of Oscar and Evelyn (Grauel) Anderson. He resided in Claremont and Newport for several years while he was working at Joy and returned in April of this year. He had previously lived in Port Charlotte for 17 years. Mr. Anderson was a graduate of Elston High School in Michigan City and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He retired after 35 years from Joy Manufacturing Company, where he worked in Michigan City, Ind., as a machinist and supervisor, transferred to Claremont and worked in the air end division. He later worked in the product line and then as manager of the Blue Heron Pro Golf Shop at the Port Charlotte Golf Club. Mr. Anderson was a former member of the Moose Lodge, the Supervisor Club at Joy and the Newport and Claremont Golf Clubs. He loved golf, fishing, growing orchids, playing cards and taking care of his home and yard.

The surviving family includes his wife, Carol Virginia (Wolfe) Anderson of Claremont whom he married on May 14, 1949; one daughter, Patricia A. Barrette and her husband, Robert, of Unity; one sister, Diane McIlwain of Oakland, Tenn., and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one sister, Eunice Lascoe and one brother, Randall Anderson.

There will be no visiting hours. A memorial service and interment will be held later in Florida. The Stringer Funeral Home and Crematorium, 146 Broad St., Claremont, N.H., is in charge of arrangements. The family suggest that donations may be made in his memory to Connecticut Valley Home Care/ Hospice, 958 John Stark Highway, Newport, NH 03773-2609.

Bertha Clarke

Bertha Clarke, 82, died Sept. 6, 2002 at Life Care Center of Punta Gorda.

She was the wife of the late Norman Clarke. Bertha is survived by a cousin, Eileen Schofield of Lakeland, Fla., and good friends; Mervin (Joy) Bilbrey, and Bill (Ann) Jameson, of Punta Gorda.

Services will take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002 at Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home in Punta Gorda.

Sophie Deptula

Sophie Deptula, 89, died Sept. 8, 2002 at South Port Inn of Port Charlotte, Fla.

She was married for 55 years to Walter A. Deptula. Sophie had been a resident of Florida for 18 years, having moved from Bricktown, N.J.

She is survived by two sons, Walter Deptula of Punta Gorda, and Thomas Deptula of Forked River, New Jersey; three sisters, Josephine Landau of New York, Ann Erceg of Denver and Frances Watts of Oregon; and three grandchildren.

Services will be private. Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home of Punta Gorda is serving the family.

Sigurd Hansen

Sigurd Hansen, 90, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002 at IHS of Port Charlotte.

He was born Jan. 20, 1912 in Stavangier, Norway, and moved to Punta Gorda from Staten Island, N.Y. in 1994. He served his country as a Merchant Marine

in World War II and was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Post No. 1578 in Staten Island. Mr. Hansen was also active in the Norwegian Choir in Brooklyn, NY, as well as the Masons and the Moose Lodge.

His loving wife Lillian, who passed in 1978, precedes him in death. He leaves behind a daughter; Irene (Joseph) McKinney of Staten Island, N.Y., a stepson; Robert (Ann Marie) Donohue also of Staten Island, N.Y., a sister, Sara in Norway; 13

grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews living in Norway.

There are no services scheduled at this time. Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home of Punta Gorda in serving the family.
