Justin Luke Wouldridge

Justin Luke Wouldridge, infant, died July 31, 2001, at DeSoto Memorial Hospital, Arcadia, Fla.

He was born July 31, in Arcadia.

Survivors include his mother, Betty A. Wouldridge of Arcadia, father, Phillip Sims of Arcadia; maternal grandparents, Chester and Linda Wouldridge of Arcadia.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 9, at the Robarts Funeral Home Inc., Arcadia, with graveside service following at 2 p.m., at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Arcadia, with Pastor James Clay, of First Assembly of God, officiating.

Thomas M. Gibbons

Thomas M. Gibbons, 71, came to Port Charlotte, Fla., in 1973 from Garden City Park, Long Island, N.Y.

Tommy was the night bartender at the Holiday Inn until 1980. He has been the day bartender at the Portside Tavern for the past 21 years. He served in the U.S. Army overseas in Germany just after World War II.

He is survived by two daughters, Doreen Engel of Port St. Lucie and Laura Meyer of Port Charlotte; one son, Thomas D. Gibbons of Port Charlotte; three sisters, Katherine Genise, Pat Hock and Marion Melbourne, all of St. Petersburg, Fla. He is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Debbie Gibbons, and two sons-in-law, Scott Meyer and Jim Engel; and four grandchildren, Shayna, Austin, Brittany and Sam.

Memorial service will be held from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 4, at the Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home of Port Charlotte.

Harold H. Provost

Harold H. Provost, 86, died Aug. 2, 2001, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Born in Burlington, Vt. on Jan. 13, 1915, he graduated from Cathedral High School in 1934. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, 172nd Medical Infantry. Harold was the co-owner of Mer-Lu's Restaurant in Hardwick, Vt. for 30 years. After retiring, he moved to Punta Gorda, where he was an avid golfer and member of the Deep Creek Golf Club. He was also a member of San Antonio Catholic Church.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Mercedes O. Provost; one brother, Robert Provost of Newport, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11, at San Antonio Catholic Church, Port Charlotte.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to San Antonio Catholic Church, 24445 Rampart Blvd., Port Charlotte, FL 33980. Arrangements by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Patricia Walstrom Stottsberry

Patricia Walstrom Stottsberry, 75, of Englewood and Rotonda West, Fla., died July 30, 2001, in Venice., Fla.

She was born in Zanesville, Ohio, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Lloyd Walstrom. She had been a Florida resident since 1978 when she and her husband Paul moved from Kankakee, Ill. Both became active in real estate. She was a graduate of Curtiss-Wright Cadet Program at Purdue University, 1944, and received a Bachelor of Science from Olivet Nazarene College, Bourbonnais, Ill., and taught Home Economics in Momence, Ill. She was the first woman board member of the Kankakee YMCA, active in community theater in Kankakee and Birmingham, Ala., and organized the Poodle Club of Alabama. She co-founded Domestic Abuse Safe Homes Inc. (DASH) of Englewood. An avid golfer, she was Women's Club champion in Kankakee and Rotonda West Golf and Country Club. She served six years on the Florida Women's State Golf Associations Board of Directors and rated golf courses for USGA She was a reporter covering Englewood news for the Boca Beacon.

Survivors include a sister, Rebecca Walstrom (Heffelfinger) of Columbus, Ohio; a brother, William Walstrom of Tenants Harbor, Maine; daughters, Polly Butler of Englewood and Penelope Hill of Belfair, Wash.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her companion, Rick Barbushack. Her husband, Paul, preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Aug. 4, at the Historic Green Street Church Museum, Old Englewood.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to DASH Inc., Englewood; or Hospice of Southwest Florida; or the charity of your choice.

George Fetter

George Fetter, 68, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died July 31, 2001, at his residence.

Born Sept. 1, 1932, in Hazleton, Pa., he moved to our area in February of 1999 from Southport, Conn. He was previously a mechanic for Sikorsky Aircraft, a division of United Aircraft, in Stratford, Conn., working in the Test Bed Dept on the S-64 Skycrane. He retired in 1996 as chief mechanic for the Department of Public Works for the City of Darien, Conn.

He was a member of the St. Thomas Church Mens League and Bowling League in Fairfield, Conn., and a former member of the St. John-Vianney Mens League in Southport, Conn. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Port Charlotte.

He is survived by his wife, Rosemary; sons, David (Laura) Fetter of Milford, Conn., and James Fetter of Port Charlotte; daughters, Julie (Paul) Schneider and AnnMarie (Ed) Mackowski, both of Stratford, Conn.; brothers, Mike (Mary) Fetter of Furlong, Pa., and Joseph (Monica) Fetter of New Brighton, Minn.; sisters, Betty Dickenson of Maywood, N.J., Gloria Navatier of Robbinsville, N.J., and Priscilla (John) Gioia of Whitehouse, N.J.; and five grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Linda Fetter.

A memorial mass will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church Friday 10 a.m.

Harold Joyner

Harold Joyner, 79, of Seminole, Fla., died July 22, 2001.

Harold was born in Brockway, Pa. He moved to Port Charlotte in 1959 from Blairsville, Pa. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Helen; three daughters, Patricia McFarland of Ft. Lauderdale, Judy Gauvreau of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Tammy Riley of Seminole; a brother, William of Indiana, Pa.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are by National Cremation Society, Clearwater, Fla.

Francis David Sanderson

Francis David Sanderson, 93, died August 1, 2001, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Nursing Center in Port Charlotte, Fla.

He was born Nov. 12, 1907, in Logansport, Ind., and moved to Port Charlotte 21 years ago from Galveston, Texas. He graduated from the University of Michigan and was the Executive Director for the American Red Cross in Texas. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of Galveston, a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, and former member of the Punta Gorda County Club.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marjorie LaFollette (VanDien) Sanderson; daughter, Margaret Sanderson Fuller of Manvel, Texas; son, David Stuart Sanderson of Houston, Texas; step-son, James (VanDien) LaFollette of Port Charlotte; two grandchildren, John and Jennifer Sanderson of Houston, Texas; niece and nephew, Helen and John W. LaFollette and their son Robert, all of Port Charlotte.

There will be a memorial service for the immediate family only.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory Port Charlotte Chapel.

James Albert Topping

James Albert Topping, 69, of Punta Gorda, Florida died August 1, 2001 at his home.

James was born April 29, 1932, in Terre Haute, Ind., to Bertha Armstrong Topping and Dr. Malachi Combs Topping. He came to Florida in June of 1994 from Hacienda Heights, Calif. James worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District for 28 years as a science teacher, athletic director and administrator before retiring as a Vice Principal. He served his country during the Korean War from 1950 to 1954 as a Navy corpsman.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sharon Lutes Topping; daughters, Lynne Topping Peabody of Mammoth Lakes, Calif.; Deborah Kay Sloan of Punta Gorda; and Holly Bea Topping of Los Angeles, Calif.; three grandchildren, Casey Lee and Jessica Jeanne Sloan and Haven Elaine Peabody.; brothers, Malachi C. Topping, Jr., John R. Topping and Anthony P. Topping; and a sister, Lynne E. Topping Farrell.

Graveside services and inurnment will be held at a later date at Roselawn Cemetery, Terre Haute, Ind. The family requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Kenneth Buck

Kenneth "Bill" Buck, 73, of Arcadia, Fla., died July 31, 2001, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Sarasota, Fla.

He was born Dec. 9, 1927, in LaFayette, Ind., and came to Arcadia many years ago from Arizona. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Korean War and was a U.S. Air Force Reserve.

He is survived by a daughter, Peggy A. and John Vought of Burke, Va.; two grandchildren, Alice and John Vought II and four great-grandchildren, Rian Denton, Zachary Ruckman, Brian Vought and Emily Vought. He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Bryan Buck.

Services to be held in LaFayette. Robarts Funeral Home Inc., Arcadia, is in charge of arrangements.

Marilyn Janice Hood

Marilyn Janice Hood, 54, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died July 30, 2001.

She was born Sept. 14, 1946, in Chicopee, Mass. Mrs. Hood moved to this area in 1990 from Chalfont, Pa., and worked for AmeriLife & Health in Port Charlotte and had been employed as an executive secretary/purchasing in Pennsylvania and Connecticut for several years.

Survivors include her companion and friend, Edward Luther of Port Charlotte; one son, Eric Hood of Fort Myers, Fla.; one sister, Charlene Martin of Chicopee, Mass.; two nieces; four great-nieces; and one great-nephew.

Burial services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Boulevard, Sarasota, FL 34238.

Anna V. Sharp

Anna V. Sharp, 80, of Orlando, Fla., and a former resident of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Westminster Towers, Orlando.

She was born June 19, 1921, in Columbia County, Ky., and moved to Port Charlotte in 1986 from Orlando and moved back to Orlando in 1988. She was a retired registered nurse and the former administrator of Baptist Terrace Senior Adult Housing of Orlando.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Orlando and the recipient of many awards in appreciation of her work with the elderly, including recognition from the First Baptist Housing Authority and the Orlando Housing Authority. She also had a Legion of Honor Membership in the Chapel of the Four Chaplains from the U.S. Navy in recognition of humanitarian service.

She is survived her son, Marshall J. Montagna of Port Charlotte; her brother, Ralph J. Melton of Clinton, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in Orlando. Private inurnment and committal will be held at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Comforter, 595 Montgomery Road, Altamonte Springs, FL 32714-3125.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Mavis P. Pope

Mavis Pearl Pope, 67, of Punta Gorda, Fla., was met at the gates of heaven on Wednesday, July 30, 2003.

Mrs. Pope was born Jan. 17, 1936, in Colquitt County, Ga. She had lived in Punta Gorda since 1957, and worked at Publix in the bakery until her retirement in 1999. She was a Baptist and loved the Lord and read her Bible every day. She will be greatly missed by all her family and many friends. Everyone who knew her loved her.

She is survived by her children, Melvin (Cynthia) Pope and Donna Faye Pope; granddaughters, Jessica, Amber and Michelle Pope; great-granddaughters, Brittany and Abby Kirk; sister, Virginia (the Rev. Levoid) Croy; twin sister, Mary Alchus; brother-in-law, Hollis Brock; five nieces and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruben and Emma Dot; her husband of 39 years, Franklin; her son, Keith; and her sister, Letha.

Visitation will be one hour before the funeral service at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at the Punta Gorda chapel of Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home. Burial will be at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens in Punta Gorda immediately following the services. Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home.

Robert S. Schirr

Robert Scott "Scott" Schirr, 49, of North Port, Fla., died Saturday, July 26, 2003.

He was born May 8, 1954, in La Porte, Ind., to Franklin and Ruth Schirr. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in Vietnam. He had been a resident of Englewood, Fla., for 20 years. He moved to North Port a year ago from Englewood. He was a service technician for A1 Superior Pest Control. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8203 in North Port.

He is survived by his father, Franklin Schirr of North Port; a brother, Tom Schirr of Petersburg, Ind.; and a sister, Rebecca J. Rupp of Glendale, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth (Burns) Schirr.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at VFW Post 8203 in North Port.

Memorial donations may be made to VFW Post 8203, P.O. Box 7154, North Port, FL 34287. Farley Funeral Home, North Port chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
