Sophia Paparesta

Sophia Paparesta, 91, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital, Port Charlotte.

She was born Feb. 10, 1911, in Istanbul, Turkey, and immigrated to the United States in 1920. Mrs. Paparesta moved to Port Charlotte in 1974 from Bronx, N.Y.

She is survived by a daughter, Ann Reed of Macungie, Pa; two sons, Christopher Corsano of Southampton, N.Y., and Philip Corsano of Bronx; her companion, Genero Genova of Port Charlotte; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel. The Rev. J. Ralph Burton will officiate.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Pearl E. Graham

Pearl E. Graham, 83, of Englewood, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Feb., 5, 2003, at Englewood Community Hospital, Englewood.

Mrs. Graham was born March 16, 1919, in Owego, N.Y., to Claude and Ethel (White) Relyea. Family was a great part of Pearl's life; she was one of nine children, a mother of seven, grandmother of 21 and great-grandmother of 35. Pearl has often been referred to as "everyone's grandma" and she will be missed by her many life-long friends and family and especially by special friends, Bev and Douglas Graham of Englewood.

Surviving are her sons, William of Englewood, Larry of Columbia Crossroads, Pa., and David of Venice, Fla.; daughters, Verna Rogers of Englewood and Patricia Brown and Barbara Van Dewark, both of Sayre, Pa.; brothers, Floyd "Zeke" Ralyea of Owego, N.Y., Richard Ralyea of Candor, N.Y., and Vergil Ralyea of Englewood; and a sister, Betty Morris of Georgia.

Pearl was preceded in death by her husband, James Graham Sr.; son, James Graham Jr.; two sisters and two brothers.

Visitation will be held 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood Chapel, with funeral services following at 6 p.m. Interment will be later at Bradford County Memorial Park in Towanda, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, NCICFUL, P.O. Box 102454, Atlanta, GA 30368; or Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Dean Moore

Dean Moore, 53, of Cape Haze, Fla., passed away Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, after a brave fight against cancer.

He was born Jan. 30, 1949, in Waco, Texas. He moved to this area 15 years ago from Houston, Texas. Dean was a paramedic in Lee County. He was also a licensed professional boat captain with years of experience in the Caribbean and the Pacific as well as the Peace River. He had also been employed at Ambitrans in Port Charlotte and in surgery at Community Eye Center in Port Charlotte. Dean was a professional photographer. In the past, he ran a landscaping business, and he loved cruising aboard Braveheart.

Survivors include his companion, Maureen O'Leary; mother, Doris Reddell of Rye, Texas; daughter, Jennifer Moore of Alvin, Texas; sisters, Laura Pierce and Star Ellis of Rye; niece, Heather Barone of Aspin, Colo.; nephew, Jonathon Long of Houston; uncle, Thomas Sisco of Killeen, Texas, and many close friends.

Friends and family will gather for a celebration of his life on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at Harbor Heights Park.

Memorial donations may be made to the Charlotte County Cancer Society, 22107 Elmira Blvd., Port Charlotte, FL 33952.

Troy W. Bloyd

Troy W. Bloyd, 82, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Feb. 3, 2002, at Mariner Health Care, Port Charlotte.

Troy was born April 20, 1919, in Hoopeston, Ill., to William Thomas and Daisy B. Judd Bloyd. He married Vera M. Hawthorne on April 20, 1942, in Hoopeston. Mr. Bloyd graduated from John Greer High School in Hoopeston. He was a retired grocer, having been in business in Hoopeston for many years. He had resided in Florida for the past 18 years. He was a member of the Hoopeston Lions Club and the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police. He did volunteer construction work for Camp Assurance at Georgetown. He enjoyed woodcraft and fishing.

He is survived by his daughters, Sherri (Martin) Counterman of Port Charlotte, Debbi (Jon) Whiteley of North Port, Fla.; grandson, Aaron Counterman of Port Charlotte; brothers, Glenn (Margaret) Bloyd of Hoopeston, Thomas (Grace) Bloyd of Forest, Va., and David (Tammy) Bloyd of Omaha, Neb.; and a sister, Ermine (Stan) Boughton of Sanford, N.C. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera, on Jan. 7, 2002; a daughter, Linda; a brother and a sister.

Funeral service is at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at Hamilton-Orr Funeral Home, with the Rev. Charles E. Sturgill officiating. Burial will be at Floral Hill Cemetery in Hoopeston. Visitation is from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Camp Assurance, P.O. Box 18, Georgetown, IL 61846. Arrangements are by Hamilton-Orr Funeral Home, Hoopeston.

Flora I. Cormier

Flora I. Cormier, 94, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Feb. 3, 2002, in Port Charlotte, Fla.

She was born July 7, 1907, in Spring Hill, Nova Scotia, to Charles and Elizabeth (McDonald) Burton. She moved to Florida in 1992 from Waltham, Mass., where she retired from the J.L. Thompson Company as a rivet inspector with more than 20 years of service. She was of the Catholic faith.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Menelli of Punta Gorda; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. One daughter, Ann Freeman predeceased her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at San Antonio Catholic Church, with the burial to follow at Royal Palms Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238. Kays-Ponger/Royal Palms Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel is handling arrangements.

Stanley B, Johnston

Stanley B, Johnston, 83, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Feb. 2, 2002.

He was born July 5, 1918 in Brilliant, Ohio, to the late Joseph and Mabel (McGrew) Johnston. He came to this area 22 years ago from Warren, Mich. He retired from General Motors after 18 years as a special machine builder. He had been a toolworker since he was 17 years old. He was a member of Masonic Lodge, Elks, and Friendship United Methodist.

Stanley will be greatly missed by his wife of 62 years, Margaret; daughter Patricia (Mark) Matthews of Sparta, Mich.; and three grandchildren.

Memorial donations in Stanley's honor may be made to Friendship United Methodist Church, 12275 Paramount Drive, Punta Gorda, FL 33955. Arrangements are by Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services.

Harriett H. Kindrew

Harriett H. Kindrew, 85, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002 in Punta Gorda.

She was born Oct. 19, 1916 in Orange Township, Iowa. Mrs. Kindrew moved to Punta Gorda from Ankeny, Iowa in 1969.

She had been a cosmetician with Eckerd Drug in Punta Gorda, retiring in 1978.

Survivors include a daughter, Charlotte A. Rice of Punta Gorda, Fla.; a son, William C. Orris of Sacramento, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Cindy Toy of Arcadia, Fla.; six grandchildren; Vicki Rice, Becky Jones, Scott Rice, Greg Orris, Erica Kelly and Kevin Watts; 10 great-grandchildren also survive.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002 at the Punta Gorda Chapel of Kays-Ponger Royal Palm Funeral Home with the Rev. L.B. Baggett officiating. Inurnment will be later at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens. Cremation arrangements by Kays-Ponger Royal Palm Funeral Home, Punta Gorda, Fla.

Kathryn Rose Stefanik

Kathryn Rose Stefanik, 85, of Port Charlotte, Fla. died Feb. 2, 2002.

She was born June 27, 1916, in Cleveland, Ohio, and moved to this area in 1982 from Clearwater, Fla. Mrs. Stefanik was retired and a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Port Charlotte.

Survivors include one daughter Judy Walz of Sugar Land, Texas; two sons, John of Atlanta, Ga., Steven of Port Charlotte; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Stefanik was pre-deceased by her son David.

Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2002 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Port Charlotte. Memorial donations maybe made to St. Jude Hospital for Children, First Jude Place, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 300, Memphis, TN 38148-0552

Granville B. Wray

Retired Army Command Sgt. Major Granville B. "Joe" Wray, formerly of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Jan. 28, 2002, at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery, Ala.

He was born Aug. 26, 1929, in Leaksville, N.C., and moved to Port Charlotte after retiring from the military where he worked as a dispatcher for the Charlotte County Sheriff's Department in Englewood.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Marianne, of Montgomery; daughter and son-in-law, Mariana and Timothy Mahnesmith and grandchildren, Alexandra Nicole and Brandon Paul of Prattville, Ala.; daughter, Angela and grandchild, Vienna Isabella of St. Petersburg, Fla.; brother and sister-in-law, Billy and Elaine Wray of Townsend, Va.; brother and sister-in-law Downie and Carolyn Wray of Reading, Pa.; brother and sister-in-law, Delano and Laura Wray of Marion Station, Md.; ;sister and brother-in-law Betty and Al Burke of Hampton, Va.; sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Chuck Lombardo of O'Fallon, Ill.; numerous aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Helga and Glen Bowling of Deridder, La.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Feb. 11, at Arlington National Cemetery, with full military honors. A life that touches others will always live forever. We will miss him deeply. Arrangements are by Prattville Memorial Chapel, Montgomery.

Daniel William Zatkalik

Daniel William Zatkalik, 74, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002 at Englewood Community Hospital, Englewood, Fla.

Born on Dec. 29, 1927 in Bridgeport, Conn., to Stephen and Emilia (Mackovicky) Zatkalik, he had been a resident of Englewood for six years, coming from Fairfield, Conn. Mr. Zatkalik worked for the Post Telegram in Bridgeport in the composing room as proofreader and layout designer, for 43 years and retired in 1988. He was a member of the SPEBSQSA, and was a member of the Coastal Chords Men's Barbershop in Bridgeport for 27 years and the Lemon Bay Chord Company in Englewood for six years. Mr. Zatkalik was also a member of the Fun Chorus of Englewood. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Englewood.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years: Shirley (Anderson) Zatkalik of Port Charlotte; two sons, Kenneth W. and Keith E. Zatkalik both of Burlington, N.C.; one brother, Stephen Zatkalik of Englewood,; two nieces, Judith E. Hennessey of Snyder, N.Y., and Nancy E. Smith of Purcellville, Va.; and two great-nephews, Stephen and Carl Kahler III., both of Springfield, Ohio.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church, 6465 Mayport St., Englewood, FL 34224 in memory of Mr. Zatkalik. Englewood Community Funeral Home has been selected to handle arrangements.

William A. Jones

William A. Jones, 74, of Yulee, Fla., passed away Feb. 4, 2002, in Williston, Fla.

He was a native of Nassau County and made his home in Yulee for the past 16 years, coming from Arcadia, Fla. He was a Baptist, a Merchant Marine, and a member of The Southern Fisheries Association. Most recently he was self-employed as a commercial fisherman in the shrimping industry. As a Merchant Marine he served in Oceangoing Service during World War II and as such was recognized by the United States Coast Guard as a member of the armed forces.

Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Marguerite Jones; three daughters, Mary Ellen Coppola of Baltimore, Md., Royalyne Davis of New York City, N.Y., and Donna Sue Thomas of Arcadia; two sons, William K. Jones of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Charles Jones of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Betty Jones of Fernandina Beach and Myrtle Lee Raulerson of Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers, Vernon Jones of Fernandina Beach and Ralph Jones of Fort Myers, Fla.; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Grave side services will be held Feb. 9 at Chester Cemetery, located at the intersection of Chester and Blackrock Roads in Yulee, with Rev. Al Janney officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial donations in Mr. Jones memory be made to Hospice of the Tri County, 624 North Main St., Chiefland, FL 32626. Arrangements are by Green Pine Funeral Home and Cemetery, Yulee.

Annabel L. Anderson

Annabel L. (Barnhart) Anderson, 67, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Feb. 3, 2003, at her residence in Port Charlotte.

She was born March 6, 1935, in Struthers, Ohio, and moved to Port Charlotte in 1978 with her husband after his retirement from the U.S. Air Force. Mrs. Anderson was a homemaker. She was an avid bowler, enjoyed sewing, crafts, traveling and taking care of her family and grandchildren. Mrs. Anderson was also a member of Fairview Methodist Church in Niles, Ohio.

Survivors include her husband, Howard Anderson of Port Charlotte; son, Timothy (Kathryn) Anderson of Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Md.; daughters, Terri and Traci Anderson of Port Charlotte; brothers, Charles Barnhart of Vieanna, Ohio, and Ray (Glady) Barnhart of New Bedford, Pa.; sisters, Lila (Russell) Burns of Mentor, Ohio, Loretta (Bill) Butler of Courtland, Ohio, and Peggy (Estil) Thornsberry of Niles; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Floyd Barnhart; and brothers, Ralph and Gary Barnhart.

Visitation will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 6, at Paul Schelm Funeral Home, 3044 Caring Way, Port Charlotte. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 7, at the funeral home. The Rev. Tim Stewart, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte. Arrangements are by Paul Schelm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte.

Howard W. Evans Jr.

Howard W. Evans Jr., 67, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Feb. 4, 2003.

He was born in Landisville, Pa., the son of the late Howard and Helen Evans. Howard was a former resident of Lancaster, Pa., and came to this area in 1997 along with his wife, Patricia Evans. Howard worked as a long-distance truck driver for 36 years for Alcoa Aluminum Co. (formerly Alumax Aluminum) in Lancaster, and most recently was employed at Kingsway ACE Hardware, Port Charlotte. He was a former CAP and CHEC volunteer, and was a member of Elks Lodge 2606, Burnt Store Boat Club and Burnt Store Country Club. He enjoyed hunting, playing tennis, bowling and NASCAR racing.

Howard was a loving husband and father, and will be greatly missed by his wife of 47 years, Patricia; children, Jana Metzler of Lancaster and Jeffrie Evans of York, Pa.; two grandchildren; and sisters, Julie Jones and Debra Eberly, both of Pennsylvania.

Nelly Lebron

Nelly Lebron, 57, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Feb. 2, 2003, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte.

She was born Dec. 28, 1945, in Gurabo, Puerto Rico, to Julio Lizardi and Carmelina Boria. She came to Port Charlotte in 1979. Her loved ones will remember her as a unique and friendly person. She was passionate about cooking and her family.

She leaves behind her loving husband, David Lebron; her two children, David (Michelle) Lebron of Port Charlotte and Loyda (Dan) Whitney of North Carolina; her two wonderful grandchildren, Brooke and Joshua; and several brothers and sisters, including her sister with whom she shared a special relationship, Julia Acevedo of Jacksonville, Fla.

The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., with a funeral service at 4 p.m., Feb. 6 at Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home.

Carl P. Panetti Sr.

Carl P. Panetti Sr., 85, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Feb. 1, 2003, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla.

He was born Jan. 2, 1918, in Lilly, Pa., to Angelo Panetti and Adeline Massicci, and came to this area two years ago from Orlando, Fla. Mr. Panetti was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was employed by Potter McCune in Greensburg, Pa., and Monesson in Fairmont, W.Va. He also worked for Sterling Drug Co. and International Paper. Mr. Panetti moved to Orlando in 1978 and was employed by Hi Neighbor. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Orlando, where he was coordinator of the ministry to the sick for 14 years and was also a Eucharistic minister. Mr. Panetti was also president of the Italian-American Club and the Parish Council. He moved to Punta Gorda in 2000, settling in Deep Creek, Fla. Mr. Panetti was a member of Deep Creek Elks Lodge 2763 and San Antonio Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife Theresa; son, Carl Jr. (JoAnn) of Orlando; daughters, Lynda (Jim) Aldridge of New Alexandria, Pa., and Mary Beth Amos of Canton, Mich.; sisters, Mary Parise, Carolyn (Pat) Moffe, Augustina (Paul) Plevelich, all of Greensburg, Pa., and Antoinette (John) Mari of Youngswood, Pa.; sisters-in-law, Frances Panetti and Lois Yarber of Orlando; several nieces and nephews; grandchildren, Heather and Katherine Panetti, Brian Phillips, Sarah and Daniel Amos and David and John Pellegrin; and great-grandchildren, Allyson and Annabelle Joy, and Kayla Phillips and Kyle and Alexander Pellegrin. Mr. Panetti was preceded in death by his first wife, Imogene; brother, James; sisters, Jane Jordan and Louise Haman; and daughter, Patricia Phillips in April 2002.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 6, at Paul Schelm Funeral Home, 3044 Caring Way, Port Charlotte. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Feb. 7, at San Antonio Catholic Church, Rampart Boulevard, Port Charlotte. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte. Arrangements are by Paul Schelm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte.

Walter C. Read Jr.

Walter C. "Wally" Read Jr. 89, passed away Feb. 3, 2003, at home.

Born Jan. 26, 1914, in Port Jefferson, N.Y., he moved to Punta Gorda, Fla., in 1981 from Hampton Bays, N.Y.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Charlotte Read; four children, Walter C. III of Bloomington, N.Y., Diane Lindsay of Coronado, Calif., Pat Behrle of Raleigh, N.C., and Claudia Salter of Port Charlotte; 10 grandchildren, Walter IV, Katrina and Ian Read, Courtney, Matt and Dan Behrle, Tiffany Stover, Chris and Jessie Salter and Kali Lindsay.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 7, at the Lakewood Village clubhouse.
