Earl D. Chaplin Jr.

Earl D. "Nick" Chaplin Jr., 66, of Englewood, Fla., passed away Oct. 9, 2001, at Englewood Community Hospital.

Mr. Chaplin was born June 21, 1935, in Mattoon, Ill., to Earl D. and Mary (Love) Chaplin Sr. Nick was the owner/operator of Nick's Marine in Mattoon for more than 15 years, and moved to Englewood from there in 1981. He was a Master Marine Mechanic, both in Illinois and Florida and, along with water sports like fishing and water skiing, he was an avid pool player. Nick has played in numerous leagues and won many tournaments both in Illinois and Florida.

He is survived by his son, Anthony "Tony" Chaplin of Greenwood, Ind.; a daughter, Tammy Chaplin-Batha of St. Louis, Mo., brothers, Charlie of Mattoon, and Larry of Chicago, Ill.; a 1-year-old grandson, Max Anthony Chaplin of Greenwood; and his special companion, Teddy, his 10-year-old cocker spaniel.

A memorial service was conducted Thursday evening, Oct. 11, in Englewood. A memorial service will be conducted in Charleston, Ill., at a later date. Private inurnment will be at Harmony Cemetery, Greenup, Ill. Arrangements are by Lemon Bay Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Englewood Chapel.

Virginia I. Cooper

Virginia I. Cooper, 77, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Oct. 11, 2001, at her home.

Born Sept. 11, 1924, in Bethlehem, Pa., she moved to our area in 1992. She was a homemaker, a member of the Auxiliary of American Legion Post 110 in Port Charlotte, a member of the Women of the Moose in Port Charlotte and a volunteer for the VIP Center of Charlotte County.

She is survived by her daughters, Virginia Gilmore of Port Charlotte and Patsy Ann Fidler of Whitehall, Pa.; a sister, Marie Ertle of Bethlehem; a brother, Earl George of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and a granddaughter, Tammy Creveling. She was predeceased by her husband, Elmer Cooper, in 1999.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Visually Impaired Persons of Charlotte County, 23312 Harper Ave., Charlotte Harbor, FL 33980. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society, Port Charlotte.

Edmund F. Parent

Edmund F. Parent, 86, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Oct. 3, 2001, in Punta Gorda. Arrangements under the direction of the Punta Gorda Chapel of Kays-Ponger Royal Palm Funeral Home.

Evelyn Aldridge

Evelyn Aldridge, 71, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, at her residence.

Born June 7, 1930 in Chicago, Ill., Evelyn moved to this area 15 years ago from Joliet, Ill., where she resided for 55 years. She was an avid bowler and belonged to the 600 & 700 Club, the Ladies Auxiliary Moose Lodge 300 of Joliet, Ill., the Port Charlotte Women's Bowling Association, and the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary of Lockport, Ill.

Survivors include her beloved husband of 45 years, Laroy Aldridge Sr.; three sons, William Joseph (Patti) Davis of Joliet, Ill., Richard Dean (Chris) Davis of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Laroy (Caryn) Aldridge Jr. of Joliet, Ill.; five daughters, Pamela Jean Frain of Phoenix, Ariz., Sandra Lynn (Harold) Coleman of Port Charlotte, Linda Fay (Bill) Aldridge-Scharringhausen of Des Plaines, Ill., Sueanna Lee (David) Smith of New Lenox, Ill., and Anna Marie (Tom) Aldridge-Rossom of Plainfield, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel, with funeral services on Wednesday at 10 a,m, in the Chapel of Roberson Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Carlson officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Port Charlotte.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 21475, St. Petersburg, FL 33742.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Ann Margaret Bowerman

Ann Margaret Bowerman (nee Bell), 83, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, in Port Charlotte.

She had resided here since 1969, moving from Bradenton, Fla. She was born Sept. 16, 1918 in Cadillac, Mich. Ann was a caring, gentle woman who enjoyed her family and friends. She loved to go deer hunting and belonged to the Lake City Garden Club and Knitting Club. Craft work was her most recent pastime.

She was preceded in death in 1993 by her husband, Gordon C. Bowerman.

She is survived by two daughters, Darleen (Michael) Kinney of Port Charlotte and Maureen (Lloyd) McGee of Lake City, Mich.; a son, Lance (Cherly) Bowerman of Fort Myers, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Port Charlotte Chapel of Kays-Ponger Funeral Home with the Rev. Timothy S. Stewart officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 22107 Elmira Blvd., Port Charlotte, FL. 33952.

Cremation arrangements are by the Port Charlotte Chapel of Kays-Ponger Funeral Home.

Sue K. Challinor

Sue K. Challinor, 79, of Port Charlotte, Fla., the wife of the late Commodore John R. Challinor, passed away at her home on Friday, Oct. 5, 2001.

She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., Sept. 10, 1922. Sue and John moved to Port Charlotte in December of 1978 from St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. In the 1980s, Sue was the church secretary for Peace Lutheran Church. A loviing wife, mother and friend, she will be greatly missed. Her courageous fight with ALS is an inspiration to all who knew her.

She is survived by her children, Richard K. Challinor of Port Charlotte and Susan Disney-Greenberg of Savannah, Ga.; two grandchildren, Deborah A. Disney of Port Charlotte and Second Lt. Robert J. Disney of Fort Gordon, Ga.; her sister, Sally (Buzz) Arpin of Naples, Fla.; two nieces, Bonnie Watts and Deborah Doucette; nephew, Jeffery Arpin; four great-nieces; and one great-nephew.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Peace Lutheran Church in Port Charlotte. Pastor Edward H. "Skip" Struebing will officiate. The family will receive friends and family at Sue and Richard Challinor's home following the services.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorials be made to the ALS society of choice.

Local arrangements are by Kays-Ponger Royal Palm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte, Chapel.

Bertha M. Johnston

Bertha M. Johnston, 91, passed away Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at Fawcett Memroial Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla., of natural causes.

She was born May 14, 1910, in Madison, Wis.

She is survived by her sister, Alma Schwartz of Texas; and two sons, James (Rita) Keepers of East Troy, Wisc., and Tom (Shirley) Keepers of Port Charlotte.

Memorial services are pendinig.

Arrangements are by the Joyce-Ryan Funeral Home in Madison, Wis.

William J. Mulholland

William J. Mulholland, 90, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Nursing Care Center in Port Charlotte.

He was born June 4, 1911, in New York, N.Y., and moved to Port Charlotte 29 years ago. He was a former Longshoreman in New York City and he was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Port Charlotte. Mr. Mulholland attended St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Port Charlotte.

He is survived by his wife, Sue C. Campulli Mulholland; a son, Brian of New York, N.Y.; daughters Maureen Glenn of New York, N.Y., and Margaret (Ray) Caponi of Port Charlotte; several brothers; nine grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Paul Schelm Funeral Home and a Catholic wake service will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Port Charlotte.

Arrangements are by Paul Schelm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte.

Robert L. Rich

Robert L. Rich, 74, of Punta Gorda, Fla., beloved husband of Norma Jean Rich, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla., after a long battle with cancer.

Born Oct. 10, 1926, in Gainesville, Ga., to Robert W. and Clara V. (nee-Wallace) Rich, Robert, a veteran of World War II, served with the United States Army Air Corp. in Panama at the Panama Canal Zone and returned home to enjoy a long and successful career with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. He completed his career as head of Goodyear's Strategic Planning Division in 1987. He moved to this area from Bath, Ohio, 12 years ago and is a former member of both the B.P.O. Elks Lodge 2606 of Punta Gorda, and the Punta Gorda Boat Club.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 27 years, Norma J. Rich; four sons, Walter Rich of Milpitas, Calif., James Rich of Pierport, Mich., Michael Morrissey of Lake Orion, Mich., and Richard Paquette of Yorba Linda, Calif.; a daughter, Dayna Blakely of Lansing, Mich.; mother, Clara V. Rich of Hapeville, Ga.; sister, Carolyn Rich of Atlanta, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Walter Rich; daughter, Darlene Paquette; and first wife, Martha.

Memorial contributions are preferred to the American Cancer Society, 22107 Elmira Blvd., Port Charlotte, FL 33952 or Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Punta Gorda Chapel.

Iona S. Stimson

Iona S. Stimson, 85, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at Kindred Hospital in Tampa, Fla., after a brief illness.

Born March 26, 1916, in Berlin, N.H., to the late Thomas B. and Vanessa (Sulley) Sheehe, Iona graduated from Lebanon High School, Lebanon, N.H. She then graduated with a Bachelors Degree from Keene Normal School in Keene, N.H., where she met her future husband, Paul K. Stimson. Iona moved back to the Lebanon area and eventually taught fifth-grade at Hanover Elementary School from 1951 to 1971. Iona and Paul moved to the Tampa area for their retirement and, following Paul's death, she moved to Punta Gorda, Fla., in 1987. For the past year, she resided in Port Charlotte. She was a member of Congregational United Church of Christ in Punta Gorda and frequently volunteered her time at the three area hospitals and the Port Charlotte Cultural Center.

Surviving her are two sons, John K. Stimson of North Fort Myers, Fla, and Robert J. Stimson of Gilford, N.H.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at Congregational United Church of Christ in Punta Gorda. Rev. Bill Klossner of Congregational United will officiate. Committal ceremonies and inurnment will be held this coming spring in Hanover, N.H.

Memorial contributions are preferred to Congregational United Church of Christ, P.O. Box 510838, Punta Gorda, FL 33951-0838.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Punta Gorda Chapel.

Joseph P. Donnelly

Joseph P. Donnelly, 89, of Medford Lakes, N.J., and formerly of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Oct. 1, 2001.

He was a graduate of Pace College in New York City and retired as an accountant in 1977. Mr. Donnelly was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church; Punta Gorda Isles Yacht Club, serving as treasurer; and was the 1873 Oldest Eagle Scout in the United States.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Josephine Donnelly of Medford Lakes; a brother, Donald Donnelly of Vermont; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, whom he loved dearly, Marie V. Donnelly, and a son, Brian Donnelly.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 8, in the Chapel of the Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, Punta Gorda.

Esther K. Deltufo

Esther K. Deltufo, 85, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Oct. 4, 2001.

She was born in Battle Creek, Mich. on Dec. 20, 1915. She worked in New York City for an advertising agency, then entered the Women's Army Corps, becoming an assistant radiologist. For her service, she earned a Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. Mrs. Deltufo spent many years in South America with an oil company, returning to the U.S. in 1962 to live in Pitman, N.J., and moving to Florida in 1983.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Anthony; sons, Peter of Cincinnati, Ohio and Michael of Pitman; daughter, Melinda Ramsdell of Port Charlotte; and 10 grandchildren.

The family will celebrate her life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given in her name to Charlotte Regional Medical Center, 809 E. Marion Ave., Punta Gorda, FL 33950.

Arrangements by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte.

Robert L. Rich

Mary Lillian Schwartz

Mary Lillian Schwartz, 84, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Oct. 2, 2001.

She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and then moved to Kirkland, Ohio, before moving to Port Charlotte in 1985. Mrs. Schwartz is a retired beautician, loving mother, and caring housewife.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Leonard Schwartz of Port Charlotte; two sons, Leonard Schwartz Jr. of Willoughby, Ohio and Henry Schwartz of Gulf Point, Fla.; and five grandchildren. She is preceded in death by one daughter, Beverly Ann Schwartz, and one son, William H. Schwartz; and her parents, Henry and Elizabeth "Sandborn" Laub.

Visitation and services were on Oct. 4 at the Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home in Port Charlotte, with burial in Royal Palm Memorial Gardens.

Mary R. Stack

Mary R. Stack, 88, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Oct. 5, 2001 at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Nursing Care Center, Port Charlotte.

She was born March 25, 1913 in County Kerry, Ireland and came to Port Charlotte 23 years ago from Hartford, Conn. She worked as a clerk at a bank and was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Port Charlotte.

She is survived by a niece, Nancy Treacy of Point Pleasant, N.J.; brother-in-law, Patrick Stack of Port Charlotte; sisters-in-law Anne Reidy of Point Pleasant and Nora Reidy of Columbus, Ohio; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte. Arrangements are by Paul Schelm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte.
