Henry Melzer
Henry Edward Melzer, 84, died May 25, 1997, at Methodist Hospice, following an extended illness. He was a native of Jacksonville, and his early career was with the Florida Forest Service. In 1963, he became the first, last and only Duval County fire marshal, due to consolidation of Jacksonville and Duval County. He retired from the Jacksonville Fire Department in Sept. 1976. He was a member of the Masonic Order for over 45 years, and he was a member of the International Association of Lions Clubs and served as district governor from 1978-79 for District 35-L. He was also recipient of the special Lions Club honor, a Melvin Jones Fellowship in 1995 from the Keystone Lions Club. The Melzer family grew up in Hastings, and members of the family still reside there.
Memorial services were to be held at 3:30 p.m. today at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Jacksonville Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Methodist Medical Center Hospice.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Melzer; his two children, Edward Melzer (Nell) and Rita Wells (Gene); four grandchildren, Matt Melzer (Kim), Denise Bishop (David), Toni Skorusa, and Henry ``Hank'' Wells (Caroline); 10 great-grandchildren, Jed, Mindy and Eddie Bishop, Matthew, Cody and Shane Melzer, Taryn and Henry Wells, Logan and Shea Skorusa; three stepchildren, Beverly Olson (Earl), Linda Elliott (Dexter); and John Smid (Vicki); four step-grandchildren, Jamie Olson, Madison Elliott, Samantha and Sabrina Smid; his stepmother, Tommie Melzer, and sister, Cleo Feagle.
Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, Jacksonville, is in charge.

Louise Dorough
Funeral services for Louise P. Dorough, 70, Fort Myers, formerly of St. Augustine, who died May 25, 1997, in Fort Myers, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Anastasia Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ron Moore, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Augustine Memorial Park. Friends may call at Craig chapel from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

Abraham Porter
Funeral services for Abraham Porter, 82, 1001 Volusia St., who died May 23, 1997, at Flagler Hospital West, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Antioch Baptist Church, 481 Pearl St., with the Rev. Willie R. Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, and from 9:30 a.m. Saturday until the hour of services.
Coleman's Mortuary, Hastings, is in charge.

Thelma Green
Thelma Green, 79, St. Augustine, died May 27, 1997, at Flagler Hospital West. She was born in Baltimore, Md., and she had resided here since 1956. She owned and operated Haley's Court from 1956-79, and she was a member of Cathedral Parish.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Craig Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Jeremiah Lambe, associate pastor of Cathedral-Basilica of St. Augustine, officiating. Burial will be in San Lorenzo Cemetery. Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. today. Friends may call at Craig chapel from 5 to 8 p.m. today.
Flowers are gratefully accepted, or those wishing may make a contribution, in her memory, to the Samantha Wilson Senior Citizens Home Auxiliary.
Survivors include one daughter, Dot Maronel, St. Augustine; a son, William J. Green Jr., Orange Park; five grandchildren, John, Mike and Joe Maronel, Brad and Lissa Green; and six great-grandchildren.

Ella Baskin
Funeral services for Ella L. Baskin, former resident of Green Cove Springs who died May 25, 1997, in Fort Lauderdale, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion AME Church, Green Cove Springs, with the Rev. Charles Jones, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 5 to 7 p.m. today, and from 10 a.m. Saturday until the hour of services.

Polly Mays
Polly P. Mays, 74, St. Augustine, died May 27, 1997, at her home, following a long illness. She was born in Nelson County, Va., and she moved to St. Augustine 20 years ago.
Graveside services were to be held at 4:30 p.m. today at Evergreen Cemetery, St. Augustine.
Survivors include aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Watts Funeral Home is in charge.

Louis Nelson
Funeral services for Louis C. Nelson, Bunnell, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. James Baptist Church, Bunnell, with the Rev. Willie Hymon, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery, Palm Coast. Friends may call at the church from 5 to 7 p.m. today, and from 10 a.m. Saturday until the hour of services.

Mildred Powell
Mildred Angela Powell, 80, died May 28, 1997, at the home of her daughter, Dorita DeLong. She was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and she moved to St. Augustine in 1944. She had resided in Jacksonville since 1967, serving as secretary to the city engineer of Jacksonville for 20 years. She was a 50-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as president of both St. Augustine Unit No. 37 and Jacksonville Unit 88, and, at the time of her death, she was a member of Jacksonville Unit 283; and she was a 25-year member of Professional Secretaries International. She was a past president of the Treaty Oaks Chapter and presently a member of the Jacksonville Chapter, Secretaries group; a member of the Arlington Women's Club, Home Chapter member of Women of the Moose, past corresponding secretary of the Arlington Senior Citizens Center, past president of the Mandarin Retirement Center Board and an active board member at the time of her death. She was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church and of the church's Senior Catholic Church Team.
Funeral services will be at noon Saturday at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Jacksonville, with the Rev. Michael A. Larkin officiating. Burial will be in Chapel Hills Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, 940 Cesery Blvd., Jacksonville, tonight.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make a donation, in her memory, to Hospice Northeast, 1400 Old Dixie Hwy., Suite A.
Mrs. Powell was the wife of the late John Girvin. She is survived by daughters Joan Hudgins, Palatka, Sherlee Lee, Dorita DeLong, both of Jacksonville, Gail Blalock, St. Petersburg; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Betty Jo Patterson
Betty Jo Patterson, 71, 600 Domenico Circle, St. Augustine, FL, died Friday at her residence. She moved here 10 years ago from Toledo, Ohio. She was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was a member of the Ladies Shrine, Zenobra, Toledo, Ohio, she was a Grey Lady of Hospital Aux. in Toledo, Ohio and St. Augustine Shores United Methodist Church. Service times will be announced. She is survived by her husband, John Patterson of St. Augustine, two daughters and their families, Kathi Sue and Mark Henry of Perrysburg, Ohio and Cheryl Lynn and Dan Clark of Allentown, PA, four grandsons, Adam and Andrew Henry, Ryan and Jason Clark.
Flowers are gratefully declined, those wishing may make contributions to Hospice of Northeast Florida, 1400 Old Dixie Hwy, St. Augustine, FL 32086 or Council on Aging, 9 Old Mission Road, St. Augustine, FL 32084. Croyle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Wallace Leonardi
Wallace W. Leonardi Jr., 91, St. Augustine, died May 31, 1997, at his home. Arrangements will be announced by Craig Funeral Home.

Betty Jo Patterson
Services for Betty Jo Patterson will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Augustine Shores United Methodist Church with Chaplain Betty Mencken officiating. Croyle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Phyllis Peterson
Phyllis June Peterson, 72, St. Augustine, died May 30, 1997, at Flagler Hospital West. She was born in Shawville, Wis., and had lived in St. Augustine since 1966. She owned and operated Peterson's Bakery, and she was a member of the Altrusa Club.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Memorial Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dr. Kerry G. Hinkley, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in San Lorenzo Cemetery. Friends may call at Craig Chapel Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m.
She is survived by five daughters, Bonnie Bryant, Conyers, Ga., Charlene Peterson, St. Augustine, Robin Whisman, Palatka, Karolee Bakke, Malorie Shannon, both of St. Augustine; three sons, Dennis Peterson, Lawrenceville, Ga., Gary Peterson, Allan Dean Peterson, both of St. Augustine; two sisters, Avis Woodard, Red Granite, Wis., Marion Leigh, Tampa; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Craig Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Frances Blanton
Frances Hayes Blanton, 70, Lumberton, N.C., died May 31, 1997, at Duke Medical Center in Durham. She was born Jan. 31, 1927, in Robeson, N.C., and was the daughter of the late Grady and Bessie Russ Hayes. She was employed with the Robeson County Register of Deeds Office for 17 years.
Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Floyd Memorial Chapel with Dr. William P. Tuck and the Rev. Joe Bounds officiating. Burial will follow in the Meadowbrook Cemetery. Friends may call tonight from 7 to 9 at Floyd Mortuary.
She is survived by her husband, Dewey Blanton, Lumberton; daughters and sons-in-law Lynda Joyce and Jerry Atkinson, St. Augustine, and V. Ann and Charles Rozier of Roanoke, Va.; a sister, Lila Mae Rozier, Lumberton; three grandchildren, Van Barnette, Roanoke, Va., Demetra Amstutz, Raleigh, N.C., and Dewey Galloway, Gastonia, N.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Christopher and Chase Barnette, Roanoke.
Floyd Mortuary, 809 E. 5th St., Lumberton, N.C., is in charge of arrangements.

Phyllis Gregor
Phyllis L. Gregor, 86, St. Augustine, died June 1, 1997, at St. Catherine's Nursing Home, Jacksonville. She was born in Kane, Pa., and she came to St. Augustine from Bradenton, having moved there from Schenectady, N.Y.
Survivors include one sister, Dorothy Allan, St. Augustine Shores.
Services and burial will be in Bradenton.

Wallace Leonardi
Wallace W. Leonardi Jr., 91, St. Augustine, died May 31, 1997, at his home. He was a lifelong resident of St. Augustine, and he was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of Cathedral Parish, and he also held membership in the National Association of Retired Carriers, and he was a former member of the Knights of Columbus.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Cathedral-Basilica of St. Augustine. Burial will be in San Lorenzo Cemetery. Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. today at the Craig Funeral Home chapel. Friends may call at Craig chapel from 5 to 8 p.m. today.
Survivors include a sister, Cleone D'Amato, two brothers, Kenneth A. and Harold V. Leonardi, all of St. Augustine.

Donald Anderson
Donald F. Anderson, 43, St. Augustine, died June 1, 1997, at University Medical Center, Jacksonville. He was born in Jersey City, N.J., and he was the assistant director of distant learning for St. Leo College. He was a CWO 3 in the U.S. Navy Reserve, and he had resided in Jacksonville for 11 years before moving to St. Augustine four years ago.
Friends may call at Craig Funeral Home chapel from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
Flowers are gratefully declined, and those wishing may make a contribution, in his memory, to the St. Augustine Humane Society, 1665 Old Moultrie Road, St. Augustine, 32086.
Survivors include his wife, Janet, one daughter, Caitlin, both of St. Augustine; his mother, Livina Anderson, Bayonne, N.J.; two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Joan) Murphy, Old Bridge, N.J., Mrs. Mark (Eileen) Wiley, Danville, Va.; and his grandmother, Livina Pumphrey, Bayonne.

Clifton Collier
Clifton Collier, 70, died June 2, 1997, at St. Vincent's Medical Center, Jacksonville, following a long illness. Arrangements will be announced by Coleman's Mortuary.

Daniel Hersey
Daniel Jay "Captain Dan" Hersey, 90, died in March in Key West. He was a descendent of the Pellicer family, one of the original Minorcan families which settled St. Augustine. He came to Key West as a youth working for the Flagler Overseas Railroad, and as a young man, he was a professional baseball catcher in the Old Florida State League, playing for St. Augustine. He settled permanently in Key West in the early 1950s, becoming involved as a pioneer in the shrimping industry there. For many years, he continued to work in the shrimping business as a designer/builder of fishing gear and nets. In his later years, he turned to local crafts and was known in Key West as Capt. Dan the Net Man and was a fixture at Lazy Jake's Hammock Emporium.
Memorial services were held March 24 at Key West Baptist Temple.
Anyone wishing is invited to make a donation, in his memory, to the Key West Little Conch Baseball League, 525 Angela St., Key West, 33040.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Virginia; five sons, Eldred, Jackie, Daniel, Guerry and Frank; 14 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Frances Colee
Frances Ilwilda Colee, 88, St. Augustine, died June 3, 1997, in Flagler Hospital West. She was a lifelong resident of St. Augustine, and she was a member of McDowell Baptist Church.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at Craig Funeral Home chapel from 5 to 8 p.m. today.
Survivors include two sisters, Ella Wilson, St. Augustine, Millie Rhodes, Gainesville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
