Mary Elizabeth Ewing Powell Jones
ALBANY - Mary Elizabeth Ewing Powell Jones, of Albany, GA, died Thursday, June 1, 2006 at her residence.
Her remains have been cremated. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 23, 2006 at Covenant Presbyterian Chapel. The cremated remains will be interred at Graceland Cemetery in Chicago, IL.
A native of Chicago, IL, Mrs. Jones has lived in Albany since 1981, where she is a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, and Commodore Richard Dale Chapter of the DAR of Albany, and a former member of the Elks Auxiliary Lodge No. 713. Mrs. Jones married Harvey Mack Powell in 1938 and was divorce from him in 1944. In 1946 Mrs. Jones graduated from the Macon County School of Nursing in Decatur, IL, where she received her RN, and was employed with TB and VNA in Decatur, IL. In 1947 she attended George Peabody College in Nashville, TN, where she became a certified Public Health Nurse, and in 1951 moved to Miami, FL, and worked at St. Mary's Hospital in Miami Beach. In 1955 Mrs. Jones moved to Springfield, IL, where she was employed with the Illinois Department of Public Health as a Nursing Consultant with periodic leave of absence to pursue further education. In 1958, Mrs. Jones attended Columbia University in New York, where she received her BS in Nursing Education. She the received her Masters in Public Health in 1963 from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Mrs. Jones was married to Charles O. Jones in 1965. She was employed in 1967 with the Illinois Department of Mental Health and Retardation's District Office in Decatur, IL. Mrs. Jones moved to Tallahassee, FL, in 1973, and was employed with the Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services, where she worked until moving to Albany in 1981.
Survivors include her stepdaughter, Nancy Lee Frahlman of Albany, GA; three step-great-grandchildren, one step-great-great-grandchild; two nephews, Terry Ewing and his wife Mary of San Jose, CA, and Timothy M. Ewing and his wife Libbie of the Woodlands, TX; three great-nieces, and two great-nephews, two great-great-nieces, and one great-great-nephew; and two second cousins.
Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her daughter, Shirley Joan Powell, husbands, Harvey Mack Powell and Charles O. Jones, father, Theodore Madison Ewing Sr., mother, Joan Hamilton Ewing, brother, Theodore Madison Ewing Jr. and a cousin, Lois Eleanor Ewing Mitchell.

ALBANY - Henry Lee Monroe, 62, of 1506 B. North Van Buren, St., died Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Bethel A.M.E. Church, with burial at Riverside Cemetery. The Rev. Ernest Davis Jr. officiating.
Born on May 23, 1944 in Birmingham, AL, Mr. Monroe was a retired dietitian. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1964. He was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, where he was a member of Steward Board and a member of the Usher Board.
Survivors include one sister, Eva Gibbs (James) of Albany; two brothers, Tommie Burks of Albany and Jim Riggins (Ruth) of Detroit, MI; and several nieces and nephews.
The family of Mr. Monroe will receive friends and relatives at the home of his sister, Mrs. Eva Gibbs, 1520 W 6th Ave., Albany.

Winfred Marcus Smith
ALBANY - Winfred Marcus (Smitty) Smith, 69, of Albany, GA, died Thursday, June 8, 2006, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 12, 2006, in the chapel of Hall & Hall Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard Parker and Chaplain Tom Harrington officiating. Interment will follow in the Andersonville National Cemetery in Andersonville at 2:30 p.m. with full military honors.
Mr. Smith was born January 30, 1937, in Fayetteville, NC. He was the son of the late Irvin Marcus and Thelma Melvin Smith. He served his country in the Navy during the Vietnam Era and after serving 21 years retired as a Chief Petty Officer. After retirement from the Navy in 1976 he worked 18 years as the assistant director of Engineering for Palmyra Medical Center. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife, Lorene Cox Smith of Albany; daughters and sons-in-law Pamela and Timothy Tate of Buford, GA and Teresa and John Roberson of Raleigh, NC; three grandchildren, Tia Jordan, Steven Tate, and Caitlyn Roberson; and one great-granddaughter, Kylie Poole.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today (Sunday) from 5 p.m.-7 p.m.

ALBANY - The funeral service of David Allen (Butchie) Strawder, 58, of Houston, TX, formerly of Albany, who died Thursday, June 8, 2006, will be conducted Monday, June 12, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Mathews Funeral Home. The Rev. Ben Corley, and the Rev. Don Hendrix will officiate. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery.
A native of Reading PA, Mr. Strawder had resided in Houston since 1973. He graduated from Albany High School in 1965. Mr. Strawder was a landscaper, an Army veteran and the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph William Strawder, Sr.
Survivors include his mother, Edna LaRue Markert and stepfather, Howard Markert of Jacksonville, FL; brother, Joseph William Strawder, Jr. of Panama City, FL; four sisters, Cheryl Strawder Hendrix and husband Rev. Don Hendrix of Macon, GA, Georgia Strawder Newberry of Jacksonville, FL, Marie Strawder Patton of Temple, GA, and Billie Strawder Corley and husband, Rev. Ben Corley of Callahan, FL; and aunts, uncles, cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends today (Sunday) from 3 p.m.-5 p.m. at Mathews Funeral Home.

Merritt Barfield
DAWSON - Merritt Barfield of Dawson, passed away Friday, June 9, 2006 at Sumter Regional Hospital in Americus, GA. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, June 12, 2006 at the graveside of Cedar Hill Cemetery with Mike Davis officiating.
Mr. Barfield was born in Webster County, October 28, 1912, son of the late Britton Barnes Barfield and Carrie Rhee Barfield of Dawson.
Mr. Barfield had lived most of his life in Terrell County. He was an employee of H.V. Kell Grocery Company as a truck driver, then later on in life he enlisted and served in the Georgia Army National Guard in the mid 1930's. He enjoyed farming for many years from which he retired.
Mr. Barfield was an active member of Graves United Methodist Church, which he had served many roles in his life time.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Grace Brown Barfield, a son, Lamar Barfield, four brothers, Leonard, Logan (Doc), Will, Tom, Barfield, and a sister, Carrie Mason.
Survivors include daughter, Nell and her husband, (W.L.) Morris of Dawson; two sons, Donny and wife Betty Barfield of Colorado, Alan and wife Janice Barfield of Sylvester; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 1512-1 Gillionville Rd., Albany, GA 31707 or to a favorite charity of your choice.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Eldorendo Baptist Church, with burial to follow in Eldorendo Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Tommy Long will officiate.
Born on March 8, 1976 in Portsmouth, VA, Mr. Colwell was a lab technician at American Fibers and a member of First Baptist Church of Colquitt.
Survivors include two daughters, Haley Raelynn Colwell and Summer Rayne Colwell, both of Colquitt; parents, Glenn and Kathy Colwell of Colquitt; a sister, Heather Colwell of Colquitt; maternal grandmother, Katie Dasher of Bainbridge; paternal grandfather, John E. Colwell of Norwalk, CT; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Monday from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at Colquitt Funeral Home.

William Jeffery "Jeff" Fulford was born in Cuthbert on March 1, 1963, son of Willie B. (Billy) Fulford and Mavis Beard Fulford. Mr. Fulford was a member of Cuthbert United Methodist Church and self-employed in maintenance.
Survivors include his wife, Virgie Wall Fulford; a son, Brandon Fulford; his father and mother, Willie B. (Billy) and Mavis Fulford; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Eddie and Mildred Wall, all of Cuthbert.

Born in Mitchell County, on February 25, 1924, Mrs. King was the daughter of the late Clarence Willis and Ruby Butler Willis. She was a retired from Coats and Clark Thread Mill and a member of Pelham First Baptist Church. She was the wife of William Paul Daughtry.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Dot Daughtry of Pelham, and William and Sandra Daughtry of Meigs; two brothers, Jack Willis of Pelham and Larry Willis of Jacksonville, FL; and three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Larry Adams, Tim Willis, Josh Daughtry, Larry Smith, and Wendell Cooper.
Family will be receiving friends at the home of Roger and Dot Daughtry, 1846 U.S. Hwy. 19, SE, Pelham.
