Joe faithfully and wisely served the pecan industry for many years in various positions of responsibility. He was on the board of directors of the Southeastern Growers Association (SEPGA) from 1984 until 1990. In 1990 and 1991, he was chosen as Vice President and in 1992 and 1993 was elevated to the office of the president of SEPGA. One friend was quoted "When you think of Joe Adams, you think of commitment. Joe was committed to his wife, his family, his friends, his profession and to any endeavor he threw himself into. His long battle with cancer confirmed his indomitable spirit and he showed us all not only how to live but how to meet our Lord. He was loved and cherished by his family." Tom Crocker, longtime pecan specialist for the Georgia Extension Service stated that "Joe was a wonderful man as best as anyone I've ever known."
