MR. SEWELL
Lifelong farmer
CARNESVILLE - William Raiford Sewell, 89, of the Bold Spring Community, died Monday, January 22, 2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mr. Sewell was born February 4, 1911, in Franklin County, a son of the late Julius Lee and Merle Brown Sewell.
He was a lifelong farmer and a member of Bold Spring United Methodist Church. Mr. Sewell was preceded in death by a son, Billy Sewell, a brother, Vance Sewell, and a sister, Doris McCay.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 24, at Bold Spring United Methodist Church with the Revs. Kenneth Dietle and Tom Arnold officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Sewell is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Dorothy McCurdy Sewell; one daughter, Bobbie Ruth Sewell Edwards, Bold Spring Community; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Ginn Funeral Home, Carnesville, was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. MATHIS
Mother of three
MAYSVILLE - Mrs. Mabel Miles Mathis, 78, died Saturday, January 27, 2001, at Crawford W. Long Hospital, Atlanta, following an extended illness.
Mrs. Mathis was a daughter of the late C.E. and Vannie Wilkes Hillard. She was the widow of Frank Mathis.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 29, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Edwin Smith officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Survivors include three daughters, Shelby Pace, Maysville, Judy Thomas, Conyers, and Lindy Smith, Lawrenceville; and one brother, J.C. Hillard, West End, N.C.
Ivie Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MR. HOLDER
White Plains Baptist Church member
JEFFERSON - Fred Holder, 72, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Holder was born August 16, 1928, in Jackson County, a son of the late William "Doc" and Endie Barrett Holder.
He was a retired truck stop owner and was a member of White Plains Baptist Church. Mr. Holder was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Phillips Holder, and a son, Dale Holder.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, January 25, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Hulon Hill officiating. Burial will be in the White Plains Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include three sons, Freddy Holder, Maysville, and Lewis Holder and Larry Holder, both of Atlanta; three daughters, Shirley Medley, Commerce, Brenda Holder, Athens, and Ann Holder, Atlanta; two sisters, Beatrice Varnum, Jefferson, and Eula Jean Whitehead, Danielsville; and six grandchildren.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Evans Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

MR. PORTER
Purple Heart recipient
JEFFERSON - Lum Harvis Porter, 80, died Friday, January 19, 2001, at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Porter was born November 27, 1920, in Jackson County. He was a son of the late Robert Lee and Mary Wilson Porter.
Mr. Porter was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the European Theater during World War II, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a retired inspector with Roper Pump Company and was a member of Living Word Worship Center, where he served as a deacon for 48 years.
Mr. Porter was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Brookshire Porter, and a son, Thomas Leonard Porter.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, January 21, at Living Word Worship Center with the Revs. Richard James, Dennis Kesler and Mark Mobley officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce. Kasey Hanley, Stacy Hanley, Jason Mobley, Gary Porter, Kelly Porter and Tommy Porter served as pallbearers.
Mr. Porter is survived by his wife, Daisy Porter, Jefferson; three daughters, Pat Hanley, Ann Mobley and Brenda Thompson, all of Jefferson; three step-daughters, Brenda Lunsford, Hiawassee, and Linda Reidling and Diane Wood, both of Commerce; one son, Butch Porter, Jefferson; two step-sons, David Stowe, Hoschton, and Jimmy Stowe, Pendergrass; one sister, Marguerite Duncan, Jefferson; 14 grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 14 step-great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Living Word Worship Center Building Fund, P.O. Box 674, Jefferson, GA 30549.
Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, was in charge of arrangements.

MR. SMITH
World War II veteran
NICHOLSON - Grady H. Smith Sr., 76, of Jefferson Drive, died Monday, January 22, 2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mr. Smith was born July 9, 1924, in Jackson County. He was a son of the late Curtis and Bessie Howington Smith.
Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, and was retired from Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce. He was a member of Nicholson Baptist Church and was a member of Hudson Lodge #294 F & AM.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 23, at Nicholson Baptist Church with the Revs. Ervin Goss and Warren Huddleston officiating. Burial was in Howington Cemetery, Nicholson.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Runelle McClure Smith, Nicholson; one son, Howard Smith, Commerce; three brothers, Charlie Smith, Dwayne Smith and Herman Smith, all of Nicholson; two sisters, Lanette Carter and Myrtice Clifton, both of Nicholson; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Eagle Ranch, P.O. Box 7200, Chestnut Mountain, GA 30502.
Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements.

MR. AIKENS
Retired carpenter
NICHOLSON - James E. Aikens, 75, died Thursday, January 18, 2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mr. Aikens was born September 19, 1925, in Jackson County. He was a son of the late James Dick and Elsie Mae Aikens.
Mr. Aikens was a retired carpenter and was of the Baptist denomination.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 20, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Kenneth Dillard and James Ransom officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Mr. Aikens is survived by his wife, Joyce M. Aikens, Nicholson; two sons, David Aikens, Braselton, and Edward Aikens, Commerce; three daughters, Bertie Hix, Maysville, Peggy Vandergriff, Pendergrass, and Janet Woodall, Nicholson; one brother, Richard Aikens, Gainesville; one sister, Mary Franklin, Braselton; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Little-Ward Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MR. STEWART
Retired supervisor
JEFFERSON - Woodrow Hershel Stewart, 82, died Saturday, January 20, 2001, at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Stewart was born April 9, 1918, in Jackson County, a son of the late George W. and Jessie Stevens Stewart officiating.
He was a retired supervisor of Jefferson Mills and was a member of Apple Valley Baptist Church. Mr. Stewart was preceded in death by a son, Leroy Stewart.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, January 22, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Revs. Lee Hunter and Dennis Kesler officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce. Lenward Carder, Jerry Griffin, Roger Hill, David Pursley, Johnny Pursley and Ray Pursley served as pallbearers.
Mr. Stewart is survived by his wife, Sara Nell Stewart, Jefferson; one daughter, Jane Willis, Jefferson; one sister, Eula Stewart, Athens; one brother, Olin Stewart, Jefferson; five grandchildren, Kenneth Willis, Don Willis, Ray Pursley, Johnny Pursley and David Pursley; and seven great-grandchildren.
Evans Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. MOODY
Commerce First Baptist member
ATHENS - Mrs. Murwyn Massey Moody, 86, formerly of Commerce, died Wednesday, January 17, 2001.
A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Moody was a daughter of the late Curt and Hattie Short Massey. Her husband was the late Art Moody.
Mrs. Moody was a member of the First Baptist Church of Commerce.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 20, at the First Baptist Church of Commerce with Ray Austin and the Rev. Frank Granger officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Mrs. Moody is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Greg Bickley, Athens; grandson, Matthew Bickley, Athens; brothers and sisters-in-law, Shelby and Rosemary Massey, Commerce, and Norman and Betty Massey, Goshen, N.J.; brother, Cody Massey, Cornelia; sisters, Ebby Hill, Columbia, S.C., and Everette Milford, Commerce; and sister and brother-in-law, Janell and Dan Chandler, Dalton.
Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. EDWARDS
Bold Springs UMC member
COMMERCE - Mrs. Mary Nell Edwards, 88, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at Hart County Hospital.
A native of Franklin County, Mrs. Edwards was born December 11, 1912, a daughter of the late T.O. and Maude Segars Varner.
She was a member of Bold Springs United Methodist Church.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 25, in the Bold Springs United Methodist Church cemetery with the Revs. Eddie Gordon and Tom Arnold officiating.
Survivors include two daughters, Cecelia Martin, Carnesville, and Melba Miller, Commerce; one son, Ronald Edwards, Carnesville; four sisters, Tharra Edwards, Marguerite Herbert and Betty Jean Gordon, all of Commerce, and Kathleen McCoy, Cornelia; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce.
Little-Ward Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

MRS. GARRETT
Apple Valley Baptist member
JEFFERSON - Mrs. Dessie Watkins Garrett, 97, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at Athens Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
Mrs. Garrett was born August 7, 1903, in Union County, a daughter of the late Alfred and Rachel Gooch Watkins.
She was a homemaker and a member of Apple Valley Baptist Church. Mrs. Garrett was preceded in death by her husband, James Albert Garrett, a son, James Edwin Garrett, and two daughters, Eddie Ruth Johnstone and Lois Garrett.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 25, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Don Blalock and Dr. Gerald Mitton officiating. Burial will be in the Apple Valley Baptist Church cemetery. Jimmy Hobson, Mike Beatty, Gary Skinner, William Campbell, Michael Moore and Clay Skinner will serve as pallbearers.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Maureen Garrett, Jefferson, and Hoyt and Lois Garrett, Pendergrass; daughter, Willie Nell Garrett, Jefferson; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
The family was to have received friends from 1 to 3 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
