MR. EVANS
Retired logger
COMMERCE - D.T. Evans, 72, died Monday, March 5, 2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mr. Evans was born October 12, 1928, in Jackson County, a son of the late Traud and Mary Evans.
He was a retired logger.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Doug Duncan and Donald Wilson officiating. Burial was in the Harmony Christian Church cemetery.
Mr. Evans is survived by his wife, Vernelle Beck Evans, Commerce; four sons, James Evans and Leon Evans, both of Commerce, Troy Evans, Jack, Ala., and Frankie Evans; two daughters, Shirley David, Jefferson, and Janet Morgan, Commerce; one sister, Rachel Massey, Jefferson; 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Little-Ward Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MR. BENTON
Brother of countian
STOCKBRIDGE - Samuel Lee Benton Sr., 76, died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at his residence.
Mr. Benton was a member of Trinity Cathedral.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, at Horis A. Ward Fairview Chapel, Stockbridge, with Pastor Brian Lee and Pastor Roger Burdett officiating. Burial was in Forest Hills Cemetery.
Mr. Benton is survived by his wife, Carrie Claudine Benton, Stockbridge; one daughter, Kay Bennett, McDonough; one son, Samuel Benton Jr., McDonough; one brother, Wilson Benton, Commerce; three sisters, Edna Phillips, Buford, Wilma Carroll, Lithia Springs, and Mildred Chandler, Elberton; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Horis A. Ward Fairview Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

MR. DUNCAN
Carwood Mfg. retiree
JEFFERSON - Howard Lewis Duncan, 73, died Monday, March 5, 2001, at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Duncan was born February 28, 1928, in Jackson County. He was a son of the late John Robert and Susie Thelma Duncan.
Mr. Duncan was retired from Carwood Manufacturing.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, in the Macedonia Baptist Church cemetery, Braselton, with Dr. Leroy Cooper officiating.
Mr. Duncan is survived by his wife, Frances W. Self Duncan, Jefferson; one son, Howard Duncan Jr., Winder; and three sisters, Mary Duncan, Jane Johnson and Ruby Reynolds, all of Braselton.
Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. MAYO
Jackson County native
GAINESVILLE - Mrs. Eva "Mama Gee" Mayo, 87, died Friday, March 2, 2001, at her residence following a brief illness.
Born in Jackson County, Mrs. Mayo lived in Hall County for several years. She was a daughter of the late Joseph and Mattie McGuire.
Mrs. Mayo was a homemaker and a member of Liberty Bible Free Will Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, W.C. "Doc" Gee, her second husband, J.W. Mayo, and a son, George "Peewee" Gee.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 4, in the chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home, Gainesville, with the Rev. Bill McKinney officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Gainesville.
Survivors include son, Horace Gee Sr., Gainesville; sons and daughters-in-law, Billy and Evelyn Gee, Wiley and Diane Gee, Lamar and Vickie Gee and Randall and Rita Gee, all of Gainesville; daughter, Jenny Gee, Gainesville; daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Burl Jones and Terra and Paul Cain, all of Gainesville, and Bobbie and Bill Brewster, Flowery Branch; 30 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and special friends, Dean and Susie Holtzclaw, Gainesville.
Memorial Park Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. MANDERS
Jackson County native
WINDER - Mrs. Willie W. "Bill" Manders, 89, formerly of Carl, died Thursday, March 1, 2001.
Born in Jackson County, Mrs. Manders had resided in Barrow County for most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Jessie and Ioni Fowler White.
Mrs. Manders was a retiree of R & R Manufacturing, Auburn, and was a member of Midway United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Winder Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home, Winder, with Billy Ray Banks officiating. Burial was in Barrow Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Manders is survived by her husband, Erastus J. "Rat" Manders, Winder; one son, Johnny Manders, Huntsville, Ala.; three grandsons and one great-granddaughter.
Memorial contributions may be made to All Embracing Hospice, 2160 Fountain Drive, Snellville, GA 30078.
Carter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MR. AKER
U.S. Army veteran
JEFFERSON - George C. Aker, 74, died Saturday, March 3, 2001.
A lifelong resident of Jackson County, Mr. Aker was married to Ruth Jennings Aker.
He was an elder at Sardis Presbyterian Church and was a carpenter, which he learned while attending Athens Tech.
Mr. Aker was a U.S. Army veteran and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was also past worshipful master of Poplar Spring Masonic Lodge and was a member of Consistory Athens No. 292 - Prine Hall Mason.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, at Sardis Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Harold Harris and David Aker officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Survivors include three daughters, Faye Law, Kathy Ann Watson and Sandra Sims; one son, David Aker; one sister, Rovena Jean Brownlee; and three brothers, the Rev. Ralph Aker, Leroy Aker and Donald Aker.
Forestglen Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. WILSON
Mother of six
COMMERCE - Mrs. Eula Gladys Wilson, 88, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at her residence.
Mrs. Wilson was born November 19, 1912, in Georgia, a daughter of the late Rossie Brown.
She had worked as a sales clerk with Commerce Sports Wear.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 5, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with Pastor Jeff Coalson and the Rev. Curtis Green officiating. Burial was in the Wilson Family Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors include two sons, Dwight Wilson, Nicholson, and Johnny Wilson, Commerce; four daughters, Betty F. Hanley, Hull, Elizabeth Nelms, Commerce, Linda Lassiter, Athens, and Sarah Raulerson, Homer; 34 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Ivie Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. JENNINGS
Former retail clerk
JEFFERSON - Mrs. Mildred Jennings, 74, died Thursday, January 20, 2000, at her residence following a sudden illness.
Mrs. Jennings was a native of Florida. She had been employed as a retail clerk.
Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
Mrs. Jennings is survived by one son, Al Jennings III, Johns Island, S.C.
Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, is in charge of arrangements.

MR. CRONIC
U.S. Army veteran
BRASELTON - Bob R. Cronic, 68, died Thursday, January 20, 2000, at Barrow Medical Center.
Mr. Cronic was born in Barrow County, but had resided in Jackson County for most of his life. He was a son of the late Henry and Lois Fagan Cronic.
Mr. Cronic was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict, and was a retired heavy equipment operator. He was of the Baptist denomination.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 22, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home, Winder, with the Revs. Larry Youngblood and Everest Carlisle officiating. Burial was in the New Liberty United Methodist Church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Ann Cronic; two daughters, Bobbie Jean Cronic, Hoschton, and Marty S. Mote, Winder; two sons, Joey Cronic, Gainesville, and Terry Troy Cronic, Hoschton; one sister, Mary Bowen, Jonesboro; four brothers, H.N. "Red" Cronic Sr., Charles Cronic and Jerry Cronic, all of Winder, and Bill Cronic, Huguenot, N.Y.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Carter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. HANCOCK
Mother of eight
COMMERCE - Mrs. Jeanette P. Hancock, 72, died Wednesday, January 19, 2000, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Hancock was a daughter of the late Hattie Pittman.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 22, at Fair Play Baptist Church with the Rev. G. Mitchell officiating.
Survivors include her husband, William Smith, Commerce; five sons, Roger Hancock, John Ralph Hancock, Ricky Hancock, Billy Hancock and Terry Hancock, all of Commerce; three daughters, Nancy Fleming, Toccoa, Vernoica Anderson, Commerce, and Virginia Curry, Gainesville; one sister, Mae T. Witcher, Athens; and one brother, John S. Pittman, Commerce.
