MRS. SHORT
Homemaker
COMMERCE - Mrs. Maude Weaver Short, 85, died Wednesday, January 26, 2000.
Mrs. Short was born in Orlando, Fla., a daughter of the late Hampton Weaver and Lara Taylor.
She was a homemaker and a member of Dry Pond United Methodist Church. Mrs. Short was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Franklin Short.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 29, in the chapel of Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home, Orlando, Fla. Burial was in Glenhaven Memorial Park.
Survivors include two daughters, Norma Jean Weagraff and Sheila Marie Gilbert, both of Orlando, Fla.; two sons, Charles Houston Short, Orlando, Fla., and Dennis William Short, Baldwin; one sister, Delaray Weaver, Jefferson, N.C.; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Jackson Funeral Home, Jefferson, was in charge of local arrangements, while Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements in Florida.

MR. ROOKS
General Motors retiree
HOSCHTON - Samuel G. Rooks, 83, died Saturday, January 29, 2000.
Mr. Rooks was born in Gwinnett County, a son of the late Robert and Maude Lowery Rooks. He had resided in Barrow County for the past 20 years.
Mr. Rooks was retired from General Motors and was a member of Sharon Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucile Higgins Rooks, and a daughter, Faye Rooks.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 31, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home, Winder, with his brother, the Rev. F.A. Rooks, and the Revs. Marion Prather and Charles Rooks officiating. Burial was in the Ebenezer Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Reba Deaton Rooks; children and spouses, Carolyn and Carroll Ferguson, Dacula, Patsy and Mike Wall, Winder, and Charles and Joanne Rooks, Covington; step-children and spouses, Jeanette and Bill Halfhill, Winder, Edna and Marshall Vix, Austell, Sue and Bob Turner, Decatur, Hoke Jr. and Barbara Ann Deaton, Marietta, and James and Linda Deaton, Braselton; four sisters, Bonnie Brown, Lawrenceville, Inas Holcombe, Dacula, Loraine Patton, Grayson, and Dorothy Miller, Covington; his brother, the Rev. Rooks, Grayson; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, 10 step-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Georgia Affiliate, One Corporate Square, Suite 127, Atlanta, GA 30329.
Carter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. ADKINS
Center UMC member
COMMERCE - Mrs. Nell M. Adkins, 66, died Thursday, January 27, 2000, at her residence following an extended illness.
Mrs. Adkins was a daughter of the late George and Ary Salter McDonald.
She was co-founder of Norcross Tag Company, located in Jefferson, and was a member of Center United Methodist Church, Vidalia.
Memorial services were held Wednesday, February 2, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with Teddi Dial and Sam Dial officiating.
Survivors include her husband, Arthur Laing Adkins; son and daughter-in-law, Al and Krista Ginn Adkins, Jefferson; daughter and son-in-law, Laing and Mark A. Hayes, Commerce; brother and sister-in-law, Lake and Pearl McDonald, Vidalia; sister, Juanita Mann, Atlanta; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Jack Sickterman, Venice, Fla., Erleen and Andre Garr, Georgetown, S.C., and Lee and Phil Hoke, York, Pa.; and three grandsons, Michael Hayes, Robert Hayes and Gregory Hayes.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Winship Cancer Fund at the Emory University Clinic in Atlanta, or to Center United Methodist Church, c/o Dean McDonald, Treasurer, 307 Arnau Street, Vidalia, GA 30474.
Ivie Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MR. ESCO
Brother of countians
WINDER - Bobby Lewis Esco, 63, died Thursday, January 27, 2000.
Mr. Esco was born in Oglethorpe County, a son of the late Charlie Mell Esco and Lucy Brake.
He was employed in the textile industry and was of the Baptist denomination.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 28, in the chapel of Wise-Connolly Funeral Home, Winder, with Don Pennington officiating. Burial was in the Hoschton Cemetery. Richard Esco, Mitchell McCoy, Dennis Hayes, Mitchell Smith, Jody Esco and Jamie Littleton served as pallbearers.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Smith Esco; three daughters, Linda Smith and Vicky L. Hunt, both of Winder, and Nina Allen, Statham; four sons, Timothy Esco, Tony Esco, Jimmy Esco and Bobby Esco, all of Winder; six sisters, Linda Robertson, Braselton, Ann Esco and Estell Blocker, both of Hoschton, Patsy Maddox, Buford, Kay Blocker, Carlton, and Shirley Sorrow, Elberton; four brothers, Charlie Esco Jr., Buford, Zeke Esco and Mack Esco, both of Winder, and Terry Esco, Hoschton; 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Wise-Connolly Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. WEATHERLY
Jackson County native
WINDER - Mrs. Allie Mae Weatherly, 82, died Thursday, January 27, 2000.
Mrs. Weatherly was born in Jackson County, the daughter of the late William Ernest and Mary Elizabeth Wood Hogan.
She had resided in Barrow County since 1947 and was a homemaker and a member of Corinth United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 29, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home, Winder, with the Rev. Lisa M. Caine officiating. Burial was in Barrow Memorial Gardens. Todd Kellum, Tony Crawford, John Mobley, C.L. Smith, Bill Walden and Johnny Fleeman served as pallbearers.
Survivors include her husband, Owen Weatherly; one daughter, Frances W. Norris, Winder; one son, Bill Weatherly, Jefferson; two granddaughters, Susan N. Dyar and Kathy Norris, both of Jefferson; and four great-grandchildren, Jason, Allie, Anna Beth and Lindsey Dyar, all of Jefferson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Corinth United Methodist Church, 618 Corinth Church Road, Winder, GA 30680.
Carter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. HARRIS
Winder First Baptist member
WINDER - Mrs. Evelyn R. Harris died Monday, January 31, 2000.
Mrs. Harris was born February 20, 1907, in Pavo, Thomas County, Ga.
She was a an honor graduate of Pavo High School and also graduate from Georgia College, Milledgeville. Mrs. Harris taught in the Thomas County Schools and the Pelham Elementary Schools until graduating with a bachelor's degree in home economics from the University of Georgia in 1938.
She moved to Winder upon graduation to work as the Barrow County Home Demonstration Agent with the University of Georgia Agricultural Extension Service. Mrs. Harris served in that position for six years. She then returned to teaching for several years before taking the job as home service advisor with Jackson Electric Membership Corporation, Jefferson, where she worked with schools, adults, and youth in learning the best in home and electric living from 1952 until her retirement in 1972.
Through Mrs. Harris' Leader Program, Jackson E.M.C. published a cookbook, "Watt's Cooking, " of which over 100, 000 copies have been sold. Under her direction, "Winder Heritage Centennial Cooking - 1893-1993" was published as part of Winder's Centennial Celebration in 1993.
The Barrow County Chamber of Commerce awarded Mrs. Harris with the "Meritorious Service Award" in 1989, which summarized her activities as follows: "Evelyn R. Harris is recognized for 50 years of leadership in civic, church, educational and social services." She was nominated for the award by the Fidelis Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church, for which she served as teacher until December 1999.
From 1994 until 1996, Mrs. Harris wrote a weekly column "Home Sweet Home" in the Barrow Eagle on cooking, nutrition and healthy living.
She was a member of Winder First Baptist Church, the Winder Woman's Club, Sunbury DAR, the Barrow County Chamber of Commerce and the Barrow County Historical Society. Mrs. Harris received numerous awards during her retirement, including "Senior Citizen of the Year" in 1981 from the Winder Rotary Club and "Distinguished Alumna Award" in 1997 from the UGA College of Family and Consumer Services.
Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her husband, E.V. Harris.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 1, at Winder First Baptist Church with the Rev. John Talley officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Harris is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ernest V. and Sally Harris, Athens; two granddaughters, Lindsay and Julia Harris; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Winder or to the Evelyn R. Harris Academic Support Fund at the School of Family and Consumer Science, University of Georgia.
Smith Funeral Home, Winder, was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. MADDOX
Homemaker
HOSCHTON - Mrs. Maude Lorene Bowles Maddox, 100, died Wednesday, January 26, 2000, at Life Care, Lawrenceville.
Mrs. Maddox was a daughter of the late William Andrew and Mary Lillian Jones Bowles. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Maddox was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel Wendell Maddox.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 28, at Smith Memory Chapel of Smith Funeral Home, Winder, with the Rev. John Talley officiating. Burial was in Westview Cemetery, Atlanta.
Survivors include grandson and wife, Lamar and Pam Reynolds, Hoschton; granddaughter, Claudia Reynolds, Winston; and great-grandchildren, Shawn and Kristy Reynolds, Hoschton.
Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MR. LEACHMAN
Retired truck driver
HOMER - Coy E. Leachman, 70, died Monday, January 31, 2000, at Athens Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.
A native of Banks County, Mr. Leachman was a son of the late Claude W. Leachman and Roxie Gosnell Leachman.
He was a retired truck driver.
Mr. Leachman was preceded in death by a sister, Charlie Lou Leachman.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 2, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Brenda Clark and David Garrison officiating. Burial was in the Ridgeway Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Sue E. Leachman; two sons, Larry Leachman, Cornelia, and William Claude Leachman Jr., Charlotte, N.C.; one daughter, Linda Neisler, Commerce; six step-sons, Curtis McIntire and Steven Hagan, both of Nicholson, Frank McIntire, Louisville, Ky., Gary McIntire, Nashville, Tenn., J.C. Gable, Cornelia, and Roy W. Gable, Villa Rica; six step-daughters, Paula Underwood, Dawsonville, Teresa Marsingill, Dry Pond, Stephanie Hagan, Commerce, Shelia Norman, Louisville, Ky., Shirley Hagan, Nicholson, and Patsy Garrett, Flowery Branch; two sisters, Evelyn Baker, Maysville, and Bessie Mae Callaham, Athens; 26 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Ivie Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MR. WRIGHT
Skilled craftsman
COMER - Michael Lee "Tink" Wright, 39, died Thursday, January 27, 2000.
A native of Stephens County, Mr. Wright was a son of the late Freddy B. Wright and Hazel Ann Alexander Wright.
He was a skilled craftsman and a full-time father.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 6, on top of Currhea Mountain, Toccoa, with the Rev. Steve Welch officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Tracy A. Bales, Nicholson; three daughters, Dustie Leeann Kitchen, Winder, and Mychael Tori Wright and Juanita Ann Wright, both of Comer; one brother, James H. Wright, Lexington; one sister, Nita Wright Phillips, Danielsville; and one granddaughter.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the "Michael 'Tink' Wright" Memorial Fund, c/o Nita Phillips, Merchants and Farmers Bank, P.O. Box 520, Hull, GA 30646.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Sunday, February 6, at the home of Randy and Sherry Miller, Toccoa.
Cremation Society of the South, Austell, was in charge of arrangements.
