MR. SMITH
World War II veteran
MT. AIRY - Val Dean Smith, 76, died Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at Anderson Memorial Hospital, South Carolina, following a brief illness.
Mr. Smith was born July 28, 1923, in Donalds, S.C., to the late Oscar and Clara Baldwin Smith.
He was a retired printer and worked part-time at Winn-Dixie in Cornelia. Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of Shirley Grove Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Elbert E. Smith and George Smith, and a sister, Helen S. Chambers.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 21, at Shirley Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Paul Wright and Jason Arrowood officiating. Graveside services were held at Greenwood Memorial Gardens, Greenwood, S.C.
Survivors include his wife, Suzanne Steele Smith; two step-daughters, Stephanie King, Mt. Airy, and Samantha Smith, Clarkesville; one son, Darrell Lee Smith, Donalds, S.C.; two step-sons, Jason King, Mt. Airy, and Geoffrey King, Smyrna; three brothers, Walter L. Smith, Donalds, S.C., Albert Smith, Union City, and James O. Smith, Gastonia, N.C.; four sisters, Ora Belle Worrill and Myra S. Williams, both of Donalds, S.C., Mae S. Pruitt, Baldwin, and Lula S. Hanks, Honea Path, S.C.; and four step-grandchildren.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Habersham South Gideons, P.O. Box 195, Baldwin, GA 30511.
McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. ROBERTS
Homemaker
LAVONIA - Mrs. Gladys Towe Roberts, 93, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at Stephens County Hospital.
Mrs. Roberts was born February 10, 1907, in Fannin County. She was a daughter of the late Newt and Rose Anne Harpkins Towe.
Mrs. Roberts was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hamp Roberts.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 21, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with Henry Neill officiating. Burial was in the Nicholson Cemetery.
Survivors include one son, Perry Roberts, High Falls; one brother, Joe Towe, King Mountain, N.C.; and one grandson, Glenn Roberts, Conyers.
Little-Ward Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MR. LEDFORD
Gold Kist driver
COMMERCE - Allen Ledford, 54, died Thursday, April 20, 2000.
A native of Jackson County, Mr. Ledford was a son of Curtis and Mary Beck Ledford, Commerce.
He was employed as a truck driver for Gold Kist Feed Mill and was a member of Ridgeway Baptist Church. Mr. Ledford was preceded in death by a brother, Tommy Ledford.
Funeral services were held Sunday, April 23, at Ridgeway Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Manus and Mike Faulkner officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Martha Strickland Ledford; son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Kim Ledford, Commerce; five brothers, Kenneth Ledford, Steve Ledford and Donny Ledford, all of Commerce, Mark Ledford, Carnesville, and Terry Ledford, Lula; three sisters, Doris Leachman and Carol Pace, both of Commerce, and Susan Strickland, Carnesville; and two grandchildren, Kyle and Kevin Ledford, both of Commerce.
Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements.

MR. COLLINS
Flat Creek Baptist member
BRASELTON - James William "Jimmy" Collins, 61, died Friday, April 21, 2000, at Stephens County Hospital following a sudden illness.
Mr. Collins was born in Jackson County, a son of Fannie Collins, Braselton, and the late James Ernest Collins.
He had lived all of his life in Hall and Jackson counties and was employed as a truck driver. Mr. Collins was a member of Flat Creek Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Melanie Ann Collins.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 24, in the chapel of Brewer & Wiley Funeral Home, Gainesville, with the Rev. Elmer Maddox officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include one son, Brad Collins, Gillsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Melody and Tony Scarborough, Gainesville, and Julie and Chris Segars, Gillsville; the mother of his children, Hazel Davidson Collins, Oakwood; and three grandchildren, Trey Scarborough and Grayson and Madison Segars.
Brewer & Wiley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MR. BEASLEY
High school teacher
GAINESVILLE - William Martin Beasley, 52, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville.
Born in Elbert County, Mr. Beasley was a son of the late Joe Cohen and Margaret Gaines Beasley.
He received his bachelor of arts degree from Berry College, Rome, in 1969, his master's degree from West Georgia College, Carrollton, in 1974, and his T-6 degree from West Georgia College in 1976.
Mr. Beasley was a high school teacher at North Hall High School, Gainesville, and in Cherokee County for 30 years. He was a member of the Georgia Educators Association and the Retired Teachers Association. Mr. Beasley was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, Elberton.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 22, in the chapel of Hicks Funeral Home, Elberton, with the Revs. Connie Ivester and Jonathan Peppers officiating. Burial was in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Elberton.
Survivors include three brothers, Joe Beasley, Carnesville, Wayne G. Beasley, West Point, Va., and Michael Beasley, Danielsville; one sister, Elizabeth Beasley Morris, Athens; and five nephews, two nieces, one uncle and two aunts.
Hicks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. NELMS

DEMOREST - Mrs. Hazel Lee Nelms, 63, died Friday, April 21, 2000, at her residence following an extended illness.
Mrs. Nelms was born in Rabun County on March 25, 1937, to the late Walter and Hilda Collins Moore.
She was a homemaker and of the Holiness faith. Mrs. Nelms was preceded in death by a brother, Buford Moore.
Funeral services were held Sunday, April 23, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, with the Revs. Keith Allison and Luther Williams officiating. Burial was in the Nelms Family Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Grover Lee Nelms; three daughters, Linda Justus and Carol Whisnant, both of Demorest, and Betty Jo Groves, Clarkesville; two sons, Kenneth Nelms and David Nelms, both of Demorest; two brothers, Jimmy Moore, Demorest, and Johnny Moore, Clarkesville; three half-brothers, Randall Moore, Clarkesville, Ernest Moore, Baldwin, and Chris Moore, Cornelia; and 11 grandchildren.
McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. KING
Blue Bell Company retiree
COMMERCE - Mrs. Ruth Jane King, 88, died Saturday, April 22, 2000.
A native of Towns County, Mrs. King was a daughter of the late Dave and Julia Elizabeth Clark Underwood.
She was retired from Blue Bell Company and was a member of Wilson United Methodist Church. Mrs. King also attended Unity Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred P. King, and two sons, Frank King and Robert King.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 25, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Dennis Harris and Dennis Short officiating. Burial was in the Wilson United Methodist Church cemetery.
Survivors include daughter-in-law, Mary Sue King, Bonaire; one sister, Dorie Smith, Commerce; sister-in-law, Ruth Underwood, Thomasville, N.C.; one granddaughter, Janie Boyd, Bonaire; and three great-grandchildren, Tonya Boyd, Judd Holland and Jesi Holland, all of Bonaire.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to United Hospice, 700 S. Enota Street, Gainesville, GA 30501, or to Unity Christian Church, 70 Unity Church Road, Maysville, GA 30558.

MRS. ALLEN

MAYSVILLE - Mrs. Lela S. Allen, 83, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mrs. Allen was born January 30, 1917.
She was a housewife. Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Allen.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 21, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Claude Terry officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors include one son, Greg Wells, Maysville; one daughter, Beluah Bohlander, Brandon, Fla.; one brother, Winford Sipe, Cleveland, Tenn.; two sisters, Melba Hickman, Etowah, Tenn., and Lurine Stanfield, Cleveland, Tenn.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Ivie Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. POTTS
Registered nurse
JEFFERSON - Mrs. Lois Faye Baker Potts, 70, died Thursday, April 20, 2000, at Northminster Presbyterian Retirement Village.
A native of Reynolds County, Mo., Mrs. Potts was born February 9, 1930. She was a daughter of the late Elisha and Nellie Asberry Baker.
Mrs. Potts was a registered nurse and was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church, Melbourne, Fla. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Potts.
Survivors include one son, David Potts, St. Louis, Mo.; two brothers, Claude Baker and Loyd Baker, both of Columbia, Mo.; and two sisters, Mary Lou Marshall, Homer, and Betty Ann Smith, Peoria, Ill.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gideons International, P.O. Box 225, Commerce, GA 30529, or to St. John's Episcopal, 610 Young Street, Melbourne, FL 32935.

Ruby M. Christian
Mrs. Ruby Margaret "Margie" Christian, 59, of Danielsville, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000.
Mrs. Christian was born in Oglethorpe County, a daughter of Augusta Brooks Gabriel and the late Farren Miles Gabriel.
She was a homemaker.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 29, in the chapel of Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, with the Rev. Ray Jenkins officiating. Burial was in the Meadow Baptist Church cemetery. Tom Smith, Jimmy Kitchen, Tim Christian, Doug Irvin, Joe Christian and Mike Higginbotham Jr. served as pallbearers.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband, Joe B. Christian; two daughters, Connie Weatherby, Atlanta, and Ronda Bolding, Liberty, S.C.; three sons, Curtis Higginbotham, Griffin, Danny Higginbotham, Greer, S.C., and Timothy Spears, Easley, S.C.; two step-sons, Tim Christian and Danny Christian, both of Loganville; three sisters, Peggy Armstrong, Gainesville, Virginia Irvin, Monroe, and Kathy Kitchen, Bowden; three brothers, Larry Gabriel, Athens, and Lamar Gabriel and Steve Gabriel, both of Atlanta; and 15 grandchildren.
Brown Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
