Margie Turner Pressley
Margie Turner Pressley, 94, of Waycross died Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 2, 2005) at Waycross Health and Rehab after an extended illness. She was a native of Greenville, SC and had lived in Ware and Pierce Counties for the past 26 years. She was a housewife and of the Baptist faith. Her parents were the late John and Martis Epps Turner. Also preceding her in death was her husband, Burgin Edward Pressley. Survivors include two sons, Steven Pressley, Waycross, Clifton Pressley, Harlem, four grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. A graveside service was held Friday afternoon in the Westview cemetery in Augusta, GA. Miles-Odum Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Ruby Dell Moye
Ruby Dell Moye, 86, of Waycross died early Tuesday morning (Feb. 1, 2005) at the Satilla Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Ms. Moye was a native of Bacon County although she had lived in Waycross since an early age. She was the former owner and operator of the Beauty Room and was a member of the Central Baptist Church and the Mary Martha Sunday School Class. Her parents were the late James Carswell Moye and Carrie Bell Kicklighter Moye. Also preceding her in death were four brothers, James Harry Moye, John Terrell Moye, Jack Witmer Moye, Sr., and Joseph David Moye and a sister-in-law, Mary S. Moye, wife of Harry. Survivors include Ms. Moye’s nieces and nephews, Lillian Tanner (husband E.B. “Dick”), and Mary Ann Strickland (husband Ronny), all of Waycross, Betty Myers (husband Gene), Lafayette, Louisiana, Rommell Moye, Scott Moye (wife Amy), Cozzie Moye (wife Benita), all of Waycross, Melanie Hauner (husband Josef), Hoboken, Cohen Moye (wife Pamela), Timothy Moye (wife Sabrina), Jack “Josh” Witmer Moye, Jr. (wife Beverly), Laura Belch (husband Robin) all of Waycross, two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Moye and Geraldine Moye, both of Waycross, numerous great nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 11:00 am at the Central Baptist Church Chapel. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Miles-Odum Funeral Home. Edith Allen
Edith Allen, 88, of Westerville, Ohio, died Sunday (01-30-05) at St. Ann\\\'s Hospital in Westerville after an extended illness. She was born August 11, 1916 in Ware County daughter of the late Herbert D. and Melinda Cobb Melvin and was the widow of the late D. C. Allen. She was a graduate of Ohio State University and taught nutrition and dietetics at Grant Hospital School of Nursing. In 1961 she returned to Ware County and taught fifth and sixth grades at Emerson Park School until her retirement.. She was preceded in death by a sister Carolyn and three brothers Oscar, Edwin and Herbert Melvin.. She is survived by a daughter Melba Jean Allen of Westerville, Ohio; a son Dr. James M. Allen, M D of Birmingham, Ala.; grandchildren Mary Kathleen, Donovan, Miriam, Elaine, Michelle, Katie and James Jr.; great granddaughters Kaya and Olivia; daughter-in-law Beth Allen; a sister Margaret Galbreath of Waycross; a number of nieces and nephews including June Lucas, Joseph Melvin, Robert C. Crowe all of Waycross, Linda Freeman of Sutherland, Va. and other relatives. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon (02-07-05) at two o\\\'clock in the chapel of the Miles-Odum Funeral Home. Dorothy Ilene (Smart) Herndon
Dorothy Ilene (Smart) Herndon, 79, of Waycross died Thursday evening (Jan. 13, 2005) at the Satilla Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. She was a native of Pierce County and had lived most of her life in Ware County. She was retired from the food service department at Baptist Village and was a member of Beulah Baptist Church. Her parents were the late Clarence Smart and Rebecca Taylor Smart. Also preceding her in death was her first husband, Robert C. Brewer and her second husband, Ernest Williamson. Survivors include one daughter Julie Gasaway (husband Bob), Lawrenceville, GA, four sons, Robert Brewer (wife Linda), Yulee, FL, Wayne Brewer, Waycross, Leon Brewer, Waycross, Verlon Brewer, Guam, two brother, J.D. Smart, Blackshear, Norman Smart, Waycross, one sister, Debbie Musgrove, Waycross, nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and other relatives. A graveside service will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Sam DuBose
Sam DuBose died Friday morning, January 14, 2005, at his home following an extended illness. He was born in Omega, Georgia, where he graduated from Omega High School. He attended Norman Junior College and graduated from the University of Georgia with a BBA in accounting. He has resided in Waycross since 1943. During World War II he was a sergeant serving with the US Army in France. He was wounded on March 5, 1944 and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for heroic service. He was honorably discharged in 1945. In 1949 he opened his own accounting practice in Waycross. He served on the State Board of Accountancy and as its Chairman. He was a member of the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants for 50 years. He demonstrated time and again his passion for community development and his willingness to do his utmost to broaden the economic, educational, and cultural horizons of our community and area. He was a former Waycross City Commissioner and Mayor of Waycross in 1973-1974. He served on the Board of Directors of the Waycross-Ware County Area Vocational Technical School and was Chairman of that Board from 1973-1975. As a member of the Waycross-Ware County Chamber of Commerce, he served as Chairman of the industrial team and was a member of the Industrial Development Authority. Active in compassionate programs, he was involved in a number of community campaigns including the local Cancer Unit, the Heart Fund, the United Way and the Boy Scouts of America. As a member of the Georgia Baptist Executive committee he was instrumental in bringing Baptist Village to Waycross. He was a member of the Waycross Shrine Club Hasan Temple where he served as Treasurer for a number of years. He served on the Crippled Children’s Committee. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club for over 35 years and served as President of the Waycross Kiwanis Club and as Lieutenant Governor of the Fourth District twice. In 1973 he was chosen as the Waycross Jaycee’s Boss of the Year. In 1975 the Southeast Area Planning and Development Commission presented him with a certificate of Merit for Outstanding Service to this organization. While serving as Mayor of Waycross, he was presented the Chamber of Commerce’s Jack Williams trophy for outstanding community service in recognition of his work in the area of industrial development. He received the “Good Turn Award” for devoted service to the Okefenokee Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of Central Baptist Church where he taught a men’s Sunday School class for 50 years. He was a deacon and has served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was instrumental in writing the history of Central Baptist Church. He was elected Deacon Emeritus in 1997. He served as Treasurer of the Piedmont Okefenokee Baptist Association for 12 years. The Association dedicated their yearly 2002-2003 minutes to him in recognition of his service. He was a member of the Okefenokee Golf and Country Club and an avid golfer. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Ethel Ingram DuBose; two daughters, Sandra Oxford (husband Doug), Dale James (husband Don), 3 grandchildren, Harriet J. Melvin (husband Brett); Anne J. Hardell (husband Robert), and Trey Oxford. He is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren, Rob Hardell, Sarah Hardell, Davis Hardell, and Julia Hardell, Jake Melvin, Robert Melvin, Nicholas Melvin, and Madeleine Melvin. A funeral service will be held on Sunday at 2:30 pm at Central Baptist Church. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends at Miles-Odum Funeral Home Saturday night from 6-8 pm. Members of the Fisherman’s Sunday School Class, Deacons of Central Baptist Church, The Okefenokee Men’s Golf Association, Georgia Chapter of CPA’s and Waycross Shrine Club Hasan Temple have been asked to serve as honorary pallbearers and are asked to gather at the church by 2 pm Sunday. Mr. Terrell Lee Youmans, Sr.
Mr. Terrell Lee Youmans, Sr., 52 of Waycross died Thursday at his residence after a brief illness. Born in Waycross to the late Johnny L. Youmans, Jr., and Margie Beasley Youmans he had made his home in Waycross for all of his life. He was a retired electrician with Kammerer Electric. He was also a member of Second Baptist Church. Mr. Youmans is survived by a son, Terrell Lee Youmans, Jr., of Waycross, a daughter, Holly Milligan of Jacksonville, Florida, two grandchildren, two brothers, Ricky Youmans of Waycross, John C. Youmans and his wife Carol of Waycross, two nephews, Donovan Youmans of Waycross, Mark Youmans and his wife Christa of Waycross, a niece, Brandy Youmans of Waycross, a special friend, Mandi Boatright of Waycross and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 11 am Monday at Second Baptist Church, burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5-7 pm at the Miles-Odum Funeral Home.

Lee Spradley
Lee Spradley, 82, died Monday morning (02-07-05) at his residence after an extended illness. He was born in Patterson, Georgia, son of the late Peter S. Spradley and Cora Cooper Spradley and the widower of the late Beulah Mae Spradley. He moved to Ware County in 1947 and worked with Scapa for several years. In 1963 he established the Spradley Automobile and Radiator Garage, operating it until his retirement. He loved the Lord and during his last illness he accepted him as his Savior. He was a veteran of the Army and served during World War II in the European campaign where he received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He also served in the Korean Conflict. He is survived by four sons Ronnie Spradley of Hoboken, Ga., Mike Spradley, John Spradley, wife Melba, Donnie Spradley, wife Tammy all of Waycross; three daughters Carol James, husband Curley of Manor, Ga., Leslie Jankowski of Blackshear, Ga. and Susie Roe, husband Bud of Hortense, four sisters Sarah Linton, husband Eddie and Corrine Haynes, husband Howard all of Waycross, Gladys McMillan, husband Ralph of Rome, Ga. and Nancy Sheffield, husband Will of Brunswick, Ga.; nineteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon (03-09-05) at 1 pm at the Hebardville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Cornith Primitive Baptist Church cemetery near Hickox, Georgia. Mrs. Mary “Floy” Toms
Mrs. Mary “Floy” Toms, 91, of Waycross died Monday at Satilla Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Born in Booneville, Tennessee to the late Ben Berry Waggoner and Susan Ashby Waggoner she had made her home in Waycross since 1978. She was secretary to the President of the Christian Home and Bible School in Mt. Dora, Florida and while in Waycross spent most of her time as a homemaker. She was a member of City Blvd. Church of Christ. Along with her parents she was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. Mrs. Toms is survived by her husband, Garvin M. Toms of Waycross, a son, Ron Long and his wife Pat of Pensacola, Florida, two step-sons, Dr. John Toms and his wife Carol of Tampa, Florida, Dr. James Toms of Pensacola, Florida, two grandchildren, Sheri Hamilton and her husband Walter of Pensacola, Florida, Lisa Long of Pensacola, Florida, three step-grandchildren, Maria Elizabeth Ries and her husband Mark of Tarpon Springs, Florida, Tori Toms of Pensacola, Florida, Trevor Toms of Pensacola, Florida and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm, Wednesday in the Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel, burial will follow in Booneville, Tennessee. Eugene Poirrier
Eugene Poirrier, died Monday evening, February 28, 2005, at Satilla Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. He was born in Perry, Florida, June 28, 1919, but Waycross has been his home since 1953. He was the son of the late Maxime J. Poirrier and Aurelie Regaud Poirrier. Also preceding him in death was his only brother Dr. Maxime J. Poirrier, Jr. He was a graduate of Bliss Electric School and attended the University of Florida. During World War II he served in the Pacific Theater. He retired from CSX Corporation in 1985 with 33 years service in electronics. A member of Central Baptist Church since 1954 he served on the deacon board, various deacon committees and was elected deacon emeritus in 1997. For 25 years he served in the Children’s division of the Sunday School and was a member of the Men’s Bible Class. He was also a member of the Waycross Exchange Club and Retired Railroad Men. Survivors are his wife, Gwendolyn Strickland Poirrier; a daughter, Pamela Poirrier Rudick and her husband Gary of Marietta, GA.; a son, Philip Eugene Poirrier and his wife Sherrie of Woodstock, GA; granddaughters, Rachel Rudick Ryals and her husband Cary of Powder Springs, GA, Sarah Rudick, Bethany Rudick; grandsons, Andrew Rudick, John Rudick, Caleb Poirrier, Jacob Poirrier, and Luke Poirrier; a niece, Eileen Poirrier Falck of Jacksonville, FL; and nephews, Dr. Max Poirrier of New Port, RI., Timothy J. Poirrier and Paul Poirrier of Jacksonville, FL, and Jim D. Waters of Marietta, GA. A funeral service will be Thursday morning at 11 o’clock at Central Baptist Church. iIntermentwill be at Greenlawn Cemetery. Sarah Elizabeth Scruggs
Sarah Elizabeth Scruggs, 80, of Waycross, died Friday afternoon (03-04-05) at her residence after an extended illness. She was born in Brantley County Georgia, daughter of the late Elmer Wildes and Viola Ammons Wildes and the widow of the late Clifford Scruggs. She had made her home in Waycross for the past sixty years and was member of the First Christian Church, served on the church board, the Christian Women Fellowship and was a member of the Shrine Auxiliary. She was a registered nurse, retiring from the Satilla Regional Medical Center after 43 years of service. She was preceded in death by a brother Jack B. Wildes. She is survived by two sisters Adrian Smith of Savannah, Ga. and Jean Thomas, husband Carl of Clewiston, Fla.; four brothers Jim Wildes, wife Betty, A. G. Wildes, wife Artie all of Waycross, John Wildes, wife Peggy of Hampton, Ga. and Mac Wildes, wife Cindy of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; twelve nieces, three nephews and numerous other relatives. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at two o’clock in the chapel of the Miles-Odum Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Vernon Woodrow Bowen, Sr.
Vernon Woodrow Bowen, Sr., 92, of Waycross died Tuesday evening (March 8, 2005) at the Satilla Care Center after a lengthy illness. Mr. Bowen was born in Pierce County to Leonard and Angie Sweat Bowen Ridley and lived in Ware County for most of his life. He was the owner of Tracy’s Cleaners and catered for many clubs, schools, and other organizations. Mr. Bowen was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Big Brothers Sunday School Class, and was an usher. He was a Past Worshipful Master of Waycross Lodge #305 F&AM; , Waycross Shrine Club, Exaulted Ruler of Elks Lodge BPOE. On December 8, 1984 Mr. Bowen was honored by his friends of Waycross with the Vernon Bowen Appreciation Day. Mr. Bowen was a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps. In addition to his parents Mr. Bowen is preceded in death by his wife Ethel Maude Bullard Bowen, and a granddaughter, Katherine Lynn “Katy” Bowen. Survivors include two sons, Vernon W. Bowen, Jr. (wife Nancy), Austin, TX, Donald E. Bowen (wife JoAnn), Knoxville, TN, two daughters, Angela Lynn Bowen Tucker (husband Tommy), Brunswick, Gay Marie Bowen James (husband George), Foley, AL, five grandchildren, Brandon Lee Johnson (wife Dawn), Gainesville, FL, Christian Meredith Johnson, Gainesville, FL, Trevor Harris Johnson (wife Amy), Yorktown, VA, Vernon Woodrow Bowen, III, Waco, TX, Sarah Rachel Dix (husband Ryan), Winston-Salem, NC, six great-grandchildren, one sister, Colleen Williamson (husband Robert), Offerman, GA, one brother, Lamar Bowen (wife Catherine), Folkston, several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Mr. Harold Andrew “Pappy” Fulford
Mr. Harold Andrew “Pappy” Fulford, 44, of Waycross died Sunday evening at his sister’s residence after an extended illness. Born in Jacksonville, Florida to the late Harry Lamar Fulford and Frances W. Beaty Fulford, he had made his home in Waycross for most of his life. He worked for C&S; Chemicals and was a member of Waresboro Baptist Church. Mr. Fulford is survived by a sister, Harriet May and her husband John of Waycross, a brother, Bill Scruggs and his wife Barbara of Virginia Beach, Virginia, a niece, Misty Henderson and her husband Anthony of Waycross, two nephews, Aaron Hill and his wife Julie of Bixby, Oklahoma, John M. May of Waycross, three great nephews, Austin, Noah and Payton Henderson, an aunt, Mary Buchanon of Pinetta, Florida and numerous other relatives. Funeral services will be held 11 am Wednesday in the Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel, burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Members of Waresboro Baptist Church have been asked to served as honorary pallbearers and should gather at the chapel by 10:30 am. William Folks Varn
William Folks Varn, 75, of Waycross passed away Wednesday afternoon. He was a member of a prominent south Georgia timber family. Mr. Varn was the son of the late Kennard Seforth and Penelope Evans Varn. He was preceded in death by a sister, Kennard Lisa Varn Seaman and a brother, Kontz Stuart Varn. Mr. Varn was a graduate of The Citadel of South Carolina and the University of Georgia Law School. He served his country as a Second Lieutenant in the Korean War. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He is survived by two sons, William Folks Varn, Jr., and his wife Elizabeth of St. Simons Island, Robert Brinson Varn of Jacksonville, Florida, one daughter, Penelope Varn Kern and her husband Steve of Seattle, Washington, two grandchildren, Catherine Elizabeth Varn and William F. Varn, III both of St. Simons, Island, two sisters, Margaret Varn Shave of Amelia Island, Florida, and Carolyn Varn Hereford of Valdosta, Georgia, one brother, Jacob Varn and his wife Joyce of Waycross and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services will be held 2 pm Tuesday in the Chapel of Miles-Odum Funeral Home. Lennett I. Cox
Lennett I. Cox, 62, of Waycross died Friday night (Feb. 18, 2005) at Baptist Village after a lengthy illness. She was born in Echols County, GA to the late Edgar and Janie Louise Cox. She lived in Waycross since the early 1980’s. Before moving to Waycross she was a Nursing Assistant in Weldon, NC. She was of the Methodist faith. She was also preceded in death by two sons, David Clay and Clifford Clay; four brothers, Rufus Cox, Ernest Cox, Roosevelt Cox, and J.C. Cox. Survivors include one daughter, Brenda Hobbs, two sons, Eugene Clay, Clinton Clay, former husband, Lamar Clay, all of Weldon, NC, three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, three sisters, Edna Griffin (husband Windon), Waycross, Faye Groover (Carnell), Waynesville, Elizabeth Rhodes, Waynesville, several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Memorialization is by cremation. Inurnment will be in the family plot in Weldon, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Baptist Village, 2650 Carswell Ave., Waycross, GA 31503. John M. O'Briant
John M. O'Briant, 77, died Thursday afternoon (02-17-05) at the Pierce County Nursing Home after an extended illness. He was a native of Logan, West Virginia, son of the late Bertie Loyd O'Briant and Elma Thomas O'Briant. He came to Waycross from Rocky Mount, North Carolina in 1974 with the CSX Railroad and retired as Captain of Police and Special Services here in Waycross after thirty-six years with the railroad. He was Elder Emeritus of the First Presbyterian Church, Treasurer of the Men's Bible Class and the Thursday Morning Breakfast Club. He had been a member of the Hasan Temple since 1974, Dothan Masonic Lodge # 466 F & A M, The Waycross Exchange Club since 1986, CSX Officers Club, Board of Directors of the YMCA and the Satilla Regional Medical Auxiliary. He served with the U. S. Coast Guard during World War Two and was preceded in death by a grandson John Edward O'Briant. He is survived by his wife of fifty three years Dorothy West O'Briant of Waycross; a son Michael K. O'Briant, wife Wendy of Rock Mount, N. C.; a granddaughter Ashleigh Elizabeth O'Briant of Rocky Mount, N. C.; a niece Elizabeth W. Wood of Edgewater Beach, Fla. and other relatives. Funeral services will be Sunday afternoon (02-20-05) at two o'clock at the First Presbyterian Church. Entombment will be in the Greenlawn Mausoleum. The Men's Thursday Morning Breakfast Club will serve as honorary pallbearers, they are requested to gather at the church at 1:30 Sunday afternoon. The family will receive friends at the Miles-Odum Funeral Home from five until seven o'clock Saturday night. Miriam Sister Chester
Miriam Sister Chester, 86, died Sunday night (02-27-05) at Satilla Care Center after an extended illness. She was born in Appling County Georgia, daughter of the late Marion Thornton and America Turner Thornton and the widow of the late Harvey Chester. She had been making her home in Waycross for the last forty-five years and was a member of the Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Wayne County. She is survived by two sisters Florene Billie Sheffield of High Springs, Fla. and Colleen Carter of Waycross; one brother George Thornton, wife Frances of Vidalia, Ga.; a step-daughter-in-law Helen Chester of Orlando, Fla.; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at eleven o’clock at the Big Creek Primitive Church in Wayne County. Burial will be in the church cemetery. She will placed in the church at ten o’clock Wednesday and the family will receive friends at the Miles-Odum Funeral Home from six until eight o’clock Tuesday night. James Allan Chapman
James Allan Chapman was born November 12, 1927 in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Arnold Henry Chapman and the late Althea Prindle Chapman. He grew up in Jacksonville, Florida where he attended local schools and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School. During World War II he served in the Pacific (Tokyo) under McArthur’s Command. After the war he graduated from Emory University with a B.A. in Journalism. While living in Jacksonville, he worked for the Jacksonville Journal and the Florida Times Union. After college graduation he moved to Macon where he worked for the Macon Telegraph for 40 years progressing from a reporter to Senior Managing Editor. While at the Telegraph he also served as the loaned executive to the United Way Campaign. Mr. Chapman was a member of First Christian Church in Macon where he served as a Sunday School teacher, Deacon, ordained Elder and President of the congregation. He was also State Regional Moderator of the Disciples of Christ Church in Georgia. While in Macon he was President of the Optimist Club, member and President of the Library Board, and member and Vice President of the Macon Symphony Board. He was instrumental in the development of Vineville Christian Towers, Macon’s first high-rise apartment for the elderly. After retirement, he also filled an interim spot on Macon City Council for one year. He served as the Director for the Ben Hogan Charity Golf Tournament (now known as the Nationwide Tour). Mr. Chapman has lived in Waycross for four years and was a member of First Christian Church where he was an Elder. He also was a member of the Waycross Kiwanis Club. He is survived by his wife, Nancy S. Chapman and four children, Nan Chapman Mikell of Homerville, Georgia, Michael A. Chapman of Atlanta, Stephen A. Chapman (Cathy) of Canton, Debra Yonz (Randy) of Waycross, and one brother John David Chapman of Canton, and eight grandchildren, Emily Bessonette Leccese (Eric) of Macon, Erin Bessonette of Homerville, Melanie, Shannon, Melissa, and Marshall Chapman of Canton, Christopher and Matthew Yonz of Waycross, and one great-grandchild, Jadyn Andrews of Homerville. He died Thursday, March 3rd, after a 2-year battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 5, 2005 at 2 p.m. at First Christian Church in Waycross. iIntermentwill be held at a later date in Macon, Georgia in Riverside Cemetery. Officiating at the memorial service will be the Reverend Keith Weekley and Reverend Doctor Eric Mathison. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Hospice Satilla, 1921 Alice St., Waycross, GA 31501, Southeast Cancer Unit, 401 Pendleton St., Waycross, GA 31501 or a charity of your choice. Mr. Ray Ellis Jacobs
Mr. Ray Ellis Jacobs, 61, of Hoboken died Friday at his residence after a brief illness. Born in Brantley County to Calvin Jacobs and Emily Robbins Jacobs he had made his home in Ware and Brantley County for most of his life. He was a retired truck driver, a member of Philippian Worship Center, the VFW #4382, and the Masonic Lodge. He served in the United States Army in the Vietnam War. He was preceded in death by his father Calvin Eugene Jacobs. Mr. Jacobs is survived by his wife, Julia Jacobs of Waycross, a son, Londa Ray Jacobs of Landcaster, California, two daughters, Lori Canty of Jesup, Wendy Barnhill of Brunswick, two grandchildren, Sarah Canty and Jacob Aaron Canty, his mother, Emily Robbins Jacobs of Hoboken, two sisters, Carol Mann of Waycross, Charlene Kurtz of Waycross, four brothers, Roy Jacobs of Hoboken, Gene Jacobs of Jacksonville, Florida, Bennie Jacobs of Hoboken, Alec Jacobs of Hoboken and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m., Monday at the Philippian Worship Center in Hoboken. Burial will follow in Hoboken City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Sunday evening at the Miles-Odum Funeral Home.

Mrs. Alice Jean Hancock
Mrs. Alice Jean Hancock, 78, of Waycross died Saturday at Satilla Regional Medical Center. Born in Mt. Willing, Alabama to the late Willie L. Cook and Ruby W. Cook she was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Georgia Power Ambassador Club, the Georgia Power Women’s Club and the Green Thumb Garden Club. She loved the bridge clubs she was a member of, she taught bridge to others, collected and sold antiques. She loved flea markets in Alabama, Georgia and Florida. She played golf while she was able and was a member of Lakeview Golf Club. She loved cooking and was a great cook and shared her talents with others. Along with her parents she was preceded in death by a sister, Frances C. Harper. Mrs. Hancock is survived by her husband Zack C. Hancock of Waycross, a brother James L. Cook and his wife Sybil, a brother-in-law Ralph Harper, three nephews, Jim Cook and his wife Bonnie, Jeff Cook and his wife Leslie, Buddy Weeks and his wife Amy, a niece, Jan Cook and her husband Derek, four great nephews, Jameson Cook, Will Cook, Lamar Weeks, Scott Weeks, and four great nieces, Ann Weeks, Claire Cook, Haley Cook and Lauren Cook. A memorial service will be held 1:30 pm Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, Arthur Moore Chapel. Memorialization will be by cremation.

Robert Bernard Zachry, Jr.
Robert Bernard Zachry, Jr., died Saturday night (03-12-05) at his residence after an extended illness. He was a life long resident of Ware County, son of the late Robert Bernard Zachry, Sr. and Lila Bunn Zachry. He owned and operated, with his brother Taylor Zachry, the R. B. Zachry Furniture Company until 1969 and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He served with the U. S. Marines during World War II and was preceded in death by a wife Marilynn Maree Zachry and a brother Taylor Zachry. He is survived by his wife Patsy Edenfield Zachry of Waycross; two daughters Marilynn Miriam Morris, husband Jack of Augusta, Ga. and Millie Maree Hopkins, husband Charlie of Waycross; three sons Robert Bernard Zachry III, wife Lou of Douglas, Ga., Michael Howard Zachry, wife Jeanene of Blackshear and David Bunn Zachry, of Brunswick, Ga.; a daughter-in-law Barbara Zachry of Brunswick, Ga.; a sister Martha Thwaite of Atlanta, Ga.; nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren and numerous other relatives. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon (03-15-05) at 3 pm at the graveside in Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Miles-Odum Funeral Home from 6-8 pm Monday night and requested that memorials be sent to Hospice Satilla 1921 Alice Street Waycross, Ga. 31501.
