Frank M. Grizzle

Mr. Frank M. Grizzle, 86, of Dahlonega, died Monday Feb. 9, 2004, at his residence following an extended illness.

Mr. Grizzle was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County.

He was a retired poultry farmer and was a deacon at Salem Baptist Church in Lumpkin County for more than 42 years.

He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

He was the son of the late John and Nancy Motes Grizzle and was also preceded in death by a son, Mitchell Grizzle; brothers, Walter Grizzle, Raymond Grizzle; and sisters, Myrtle Jarrard, Lillie Mae Grizzle.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel Tate Grizzle, Dahlonega; sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Frances Grizzle, Tracy and Brenda Grizzle, all of Dahlonega; daughter and son-in-law, Norma and David Smith, Murrayville; daughter-in-law, Barbara Grizzle, Dahlonega; 13 Grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a large number of other relatives.

Services were held Feb. 12 at Salem Baptist Church in Lumpkin County with the Rev. Roger Stover, the Rev. Dean Bryant, and the Rev. Clyde Collins officiating. Burial followed in Dahlonega Memorial Park with full military honors provided by the Veterans Alliance.

Banister Funeral Home, Dahlonega, was in charge of the arrangements.

Capt. Robert Paul Littlefield Jr.

Capt. Robert Paul Littlefield Jr., 82, of Dahlonega, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at Chestatee Regional Hospital in Dahlonega.

Capt. Littlefield piloted B-26 Marauders with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, flying bombing missions on Nazi installations in the Mediterranean theater.

On one occasion over the Liri River dam in Italy, his plane was hit 45 times by flak, and the rudder controls were shot away. On another, occasion, his plane was hit 50 times, and a rudder control cable was severed, sending his plane into a spin while a box of ammunition caught fire inside the plane. Both times, he brought his plane and crew safely to home base. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Born June 13, 1921, in Atlanta, Capt. Littlefield graduated from Fulton High School and attended North Georgia College and Georgia Tech before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor motivated him to join the war effort.

Capt. Littlefield served in the Army Reserves, and trained troops stateside during the Korean War.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Paul Littlefield Sr., and his sister, Martha Elizabeth Littlefield.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Ann Seritt Littlefield, Dahlonega; daughters and son-in-law, Stacey Elizabeth Littlefield, Robin Kathleen Littlefield, both of Dahlonega, Leanne Yvette Stennett, Calhoun, and Mr. and Mrs. Edward McHugh, Acworth.

At his request, Capt. Littlefield was cremated, and his ashes were scattered on his property in Porter Springs.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Lumpkin County (TLC) Humane Society.

William O. Hampel Sr.

Mr. William O. Hampel Sr., 94, of Tifton, died Wednesday Feb. 11, 2004, at Grace Manor Assisted Living Home in Tifton following an extended illness.

Mr. Hampel was a native of Hamburg, Germany, and a former resident of New Jersey for many years.

During World War II, Mr. Hampel worked as a sheet metal worker in New Jersey shipyards.

He retired as a hospital maintenance worker. He was of the protestant faith.

He was the son of the late William Otto Hampel and Martha Neibergal Hampel and was preceded in death by wives, Hazel Elizabeth Chuler Hampel and Theresa Stepanek Hampel; and brothers, Werner Hampel and Eric Hampel.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Brenda Hampel, Dawsonville; grandsons and spouses, Billy and Bicki Hampel, Franklin County, Paul and Tammy Hampel, Alan and Lisa Hampel, Eric Hampel, John Ragland, all of Dahlonega, Troy and Karen Hampel, Gillsville; granddaughter and spouse, Shirley Mischelle and Jeff Kent, Gillsville; great-grandchildren, Randy Hampel, Jonathan Hampel, Megan Hampel, Cody Hampel, Tyler Hampel, all of Dahlonega; Allen Hampel, Gabriel Hampel, Rachelle Hampel, all of Franklin County, Levi Kent, Gillsville; and several other relatives.

A memorial service was held Feb. 12 in the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega with Paul Hampel officiating.

David 'Cud' Reeves

Mr. David 'Cud' Reeves, 70, of Dawsonville, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness.

Born in Lumpkin County, he lived most of his life in Lumpkin and Dawson counties. Disabled at his death, he was formerly employed at Gold City Nursing Center and the City of Charlotte, N.C.

Mr. Reeves was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Edith Reeves.

He is survived by his daughter, Joyce Hanley, Mannasses, Va.; sons, David Reeves Jr., Dawsonville, Donald Reeves, Jerry Reeves, both of Charlotte, N.C.; sisters, Marie Beck, Dawsonville, Meretta Thompson, Brevard, N.C., Margaret Daniel, Ethel Samples, Kathy Burt, all of Dawsonville, Glenda Collins, Gainesville; brother, Ernest Reeves, Dawsonville; one grandson; and a number of other relatives.

Services were held Feb. 15 at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Russell Burt and the Rev. Dean Thompson officiating. Burial followed in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.

Bearden Funeral Home, Dawsonville, was in charge of the arrangements.

Raymond E. Hague Jr.

Mr. Raymond E. Hague Jr., 72, of Dahlonega, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at North Fulton Regional Medical Center in Roswell following a brief illness.

Mr. Hague was a native of Richmond, Va., who had lived in Lumpkin County for the past three years. He was a former resident of Social Circle and Lawrenceville. He was a retired maintenance worker with the Center for Disease Control and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

He was the son of the late Raymond E. and Catherine Hague. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen 'Dotty' Hague, Dahlonega; stepdaughters, Jackie Wages, Dahlonega, Sherry Torres, Atlanta; grandson, Rodney Torres; sister, Eunice Adams, Richmond, Va.; and several other relatives.

A memorial service was held Feb. 17 at Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega with the Rev. Lamar Day officiating.

Burel Patterson

Mr. Burel Patterson, 70, of Gainesville, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at his home following an extended illness.

He will be missed by many friends.

Mr. Patterson was born July 14, 1933, to the late Babe Patterson and Emmie Patterson.

He was also preceded in death by a nephew, Ronnie Walters.

Mr. Patterson was self-employed and known by many as a great deer and turkey hunter.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marie Patterson, Gainesville; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Debra Patterson, Dahlonega; daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Bobby Rice, Dahlonega, Robin and Dalton Graham, Gainesville; grandchildren, Daniel and Cathy Patterson, Gainesville, Christy and Jess Bagwell, Dahlonega, Bobby Rice Jr., Nick and Jennifer Rice, Zachary Rice, John Rice, Wendy and Lonnie Davis, Lorry Rice, Tiffany Rice, Brittany Rice, Katie Rice, all of Dahlonega, Naomi Graham and Levi Graham, Gainesville; great-grandchildren, Madison Davis, Natalie Davis, Logan Davis, Brady Rice, all of Dahlonega, Amber Garrett, Sophie Patterson, Gainesville; sisters, Ida Mae Ramus, Ruby Waters; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services were held Feb. 7 at Cool Spring Baptist Church with the Rev. Clifford Allen, the Rev. Tony Allison and the Rev. Michael Rodgers officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Little-Davenport Funeral Home, Gainesville, was in charge of the arrangements.

Willard Flannigan

Forsyth resident

Mr. Willard Flannigan, 85, of Cumming, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004.

Mr. Flannigan, a native of Dawson County, was a member and deacon at Amicalola Baptist Church for many years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Polly Flannigan, and son, James Flannigan.

He is survived by his children, Susie Bell Almond, Dahlonega, Bertie Collins, Fred and Patricia Flannigan, Clyde and Julia Flannigan, Betty Jones, all of Cumming; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren; and several other relatives.

Services were held Feb. 6 at Amicalola Baptist Church with the Rev. Dave Holbrook, the Rev. Dean Pugh and the Rev. Lawton Burt officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Ingram Funeral Home, Cumming, was in charge of the arrangements.

Paul Raymond Dodds

Lumpkin resident

Mr. Paul Raymond Dodds, 49, of Dahlonega, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004 at the Veteran's hospital in Atlanta.

Born July 5, 1954, in Lincoln, Neb., he was the elder son of Robert Neal and Betty Jean (Anton) Dodds.

He lived in Geneva, Neb., started kindergarten and went to school up through the seventh grade.

When the family moved to a farm northwest of Republican City, Neb., he attended school at Republican City, Neb., until he quit the 10th grade to enter the U.S. Army.

He lived in Geneva after he was discharged from the service.

He married Loris Coleman in York, Neb., July 12, 1976.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Loris; stepdaughter, Wilma Hice and husband Harold, Lakeland, Fla.; stepson, Edward Coleman, Dahlonega; parents, Robert and Betty Dodds, Republican City, Neb.; brother and sister-in-law, Robert W. Cathy Dodds, Axtell, Neb.; sister and brother-in-law, Brenda Lee and Reeve Cheng, San Gabriel, Calif; five grandchildren; two nieces; and a host of uncles, aunts and cousins.
