Ruby Bell Hancock

SYCAMORE -- Funeral services for Ruby Bell Hancock, 91, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Perry Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Hancock died Saturday, June 7, 2003, in Westberry Medical Center in Jackson, following a lengthy illness.

Latrell Smith

CORDELE -- Funeral services for Latrell Smith, 63, will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, June 9, 2003, in the chapel of J.W. Williams Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery. Her brother, the Rev. Kurk Smith will officiate the services.

Miss Smith died Thursday, June 5, 2003, in Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, Albany.

Survivors include two daughters, Cynitha Smith and Kimberly Smith both of Cordele; a son, Travis Smith of Reidsville; her mother, Johnnie Mae Smith of Miami, Fla.; sisters, Gilda Elaine Smith and Chyneatha Smith both of Miami, Maybel Graham of Jacksonville, Fla., Clara Dixon, Lakeetha Whitehead and Katonia Evans all of Cordele; brothers, Lovett Smith of Jacksonville, Fla., George Smith, Harvey Smith and Kurk Smith all of Miami, Costell Smith and Ben Smith both of Cordele; an aunt, Mattie Lou Ray of Cordele; uncles, Jay Glenn of Cordele, Robert Glenn of Springfield, Mass., and William Glenn of New York; and grandchildren, Tremaine Smith, Shontee Towns, Chaquia Smith, William Jones and Anthony White all of Cordele.

elana Deneen Hoskins

CORDELE -- Funeral services for Helana Deneen Hoskins, 39, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 28, 2003, at the A.S. Clark School Auditorium. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery. Bentley Carson Memorial Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Ms. Hoskins died Sunday, June 22, 2003, in Crisp Regional Hospital.

A native of Crisp County, she attended Crisp County schools through the eleventh grade. She was a homemaker and a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Devion Dontea Harris of Atlanta, Terrance K. Harris and Juamarcus A. Harris both of Cordele; her mother and step-father, Betty J. Wood and Fred Wood Jr. both of Cordele; four grandchildren; her maternal grandfather, Arthur Lee Harris of Cordele; sisters and brothers, Earkia N. Wood, Cheasley Lucky and Fredrick Wood III all of Cordele, and Scottie A. Harris of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a half-sister, Gladys Addie of Cordele; a daughter-in-law, Olakesta Harris of Atlanta; aunts, Mary Harris of Cordele, Martha Mobley and Mary Mobley both of Del Ray Beach, Fla.; great-aunts, Dorothy Dixon and Seabell Barner both of Cordele; a great-uncle, Hosea Appling of Cordele; and a host of other relatives and friends.

MIRON ALLEN

Miron Herbert Allen Sr., 86 of LeHigh Acres, Florida died June 25, 2003 at Southwest Regional Hospital in Ft. Myers, Florida. He was born in Wilcox County, Georgia in 1916 to the late Samuel Herbert Allen and Viola Smith Allen. He married Bonnie Pearce on July 30, 1939 and four children were born of the union. Mr. Allen had been a long time resident of Cordele, Georgia until he retired from the U.S. Postal Service as Superintendent of Postal Operations in 1978. He is best known for his dedication to the Cordele Little League Program where he began Coaching in 1957. In 1966 his Cordele Senior Little League all-star team won the State Championship title. Mr. Allen was also instrumental in securing funding for and building of the Senior League Baseball field. He was a long standing member and Secretary of the Baracca Class of the First Baptist Church. He was also well known in Cordele for the beautiful work he created in upholstering and refinishing antique furniture.

After moving to LeHigh, Florida, in 1980, Mr. Allen joined the First Baptist Church where he was a member until he died. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was assigned to the Pacific when the war ended. Mr. Allen was awarded the lifetime membership of the Loyal Order of the Elks, and was a member of the American Legion, National Association of Postal Workers, and was an active member of the National Parkinson Foundation. Mr. And Mrs. Allen moved back to Cordele for nine months where they resided at the Cordelia Manor. For the last six months of his life, Mr. Allen resided at the Alterra Sterling Home of LeHigh where he was known as "MH" and where he was loved by all the residents and staff members.

His wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren adored Mr. Allen.

He always had a kind word for others and will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate to have crossed his path. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2003, in the chapel of Rainey Funeral Services at 10:30 A.M. iIntermentwill follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Allen is survived by his wife, Bonnie P. Allen of LeHigh, Florida; his son, M.H. Allen Jr. and wife Kathy F. Allen of Thomasville, Georgia; three daughters, Wanda Allen Tamer and husband Thomas Tamer of LeHigh, Florida, Brenda Allen Davenport and husband Ferrell Davenport of Columbia, South Carolina, and Marie Allen Tripp and husband Del Tripp of Athens, Georgia. His grandchildren include Davis and Laurie Poole of Canton, Georgia, Donna and Chris Gunn of Augusta, Georgia, Steve Davenport of Columbia, South Carolina, Lisa and Kenny Troxell of Perry Georgia, S. Lee and Jennifer Miller of Tallahassee, Florida, Bryan and Gay Miller of Cartersville, Georgia, Bonnie Miller of Athens, Georgia, and Megan and Abbey Allen of Thomasville, Georgia. Also surviving were a sister Frances Spires, brother Hoover Allen and sister-in-law Katie Massey Allen who reside in Cordele, Georgia. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, June28, 2003, from 9:30 A.M. til 10:30 A.M.

Cecil D. Davidson

CORDELE -- Cecil D. Davidson, 84, died at his residence Tuesday, May 27, 2003. Graveside services will be held at Sunnyside cemetery on Thursday, May 29, 2003, at 2 p.m.

He was born on Saturday, Sept. 21, 1918, in Pineview. He retired from the Cordele Recreation Parlor after 50-plus years of service.

Survivors include a daughter, Cecile (Davidson) Cooper of Cordele; a son, Tommy Davidson of Cordele; granddaughter, Kari Davidson of Cordele; grandson, Shannon Cooper of Kapolei, Hawaii; granddaughter, Valerie Hulett of Cordele; great-grandchild, Connor Cooper of Kapolei, Hawaii; great-grandchild, Dacey Cooper of Kapolei, Hawaii; great-grandchild, Caleb Hulett of Cordele; great-grandchild, Joshua Hulett of Cordele.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lima Pearl (Hayslip) Davidson, and his mother, Frances Lena Davidson.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials can be made to First Baptist Church, 205 E. 13th Ave., Cordele, Ga., 31015 or to your favorite charity.

Minnie M. Hicks

CORDELE -- Services for Minnie Moseley Hicks, 90, of Cordele, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Shady Grove Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery. Hicks & Sons Mortuary of Fort Valley has charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Hicks died Saturday, May 24, 2003.

A native of Butler and Taylor counties, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Dora Moseley, and the widow of the late Clifford Hicks. She was a former resident of Reynolds, a member of Beautiful Zion Baptist Church and a former member of Cordele's Friendship Baptist Church.

Survivors include her children, Lena Bell Burns and Cladis Hicks both of Cordele, Willie Clarence Hicks of Decatur, Verna Jefferson, Donald Hicks and William Hicks of Atlanta, Eugene Hicks of Merced, Calif., and Beatrice H. Henderson and Cassie C. Johnson both of Paramount, Calif.; 36 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren.

The body will lie in state beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Fellowship will follow the services at 103 Hallifax Way (off Highway 90/Sunnybrook Farm Subdivision), Cordele.

Ashley Renea McVeigh

PITTS -- Ashley Renea McVeigh, 13, of Pitts, died Monday, June 16, 2003, at Crisp Regional Hospital as the result of being struck by a vehicle in Pitts.

She was born on Saturday, January 27, 1990, in Cordele. She was an eighth grade student at Wilcox County Middle School and a member of the Antioch Baptist Church in Crisp County.

Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Rainey Funeral Services on Thursday, June 19, 2003, at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Sunnyside cemetery in Cordele.

She is survived by her mother and step-father, Stella and Billy Gee of Pitts; her father and step-mother, Jeff and Cindy McVeigh of Cordele; a brother, Jeffrey (Ja) McVeigh, Jr. of Pitts; a sister, Stephanie Nicole (Nikki) McVeigh of Pitts; her paternal grandmother and grandfather, Ann and Pat Teague of Warwick; her maternal grandmother, Betty Jean Hall of Cordele; step-grandmother, Billie Ruth Sanders of Cordele; and step-grandfather, Raymond (Papa) Dean of Cordele.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Hubert Kilgore.

Visitation will be at Rainey Family Funeral Services today, June 18, 2003, from 7-9 p.m.

Roger H. Woodard

CORDELE -- Funeral services for Roger H. Woodard were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 15, 2003, in Morningside Baptist Church. Burial followed in Sunnyside Cemetery. The Revs. Joey Boney and Sonny Dorminey officiated the services, directed by Hughes & Wright Funeral Home.

Imogene Gilliam, pianist, accompanied Eula Jo Sheffield, Peggy Haralson and Julie Partain as they sang "Beulah Land" and "Come Morning." Mrs. Haralson also sang "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" and Mark Peavy sang "At The Midnight Cry."

Pallbearers were Mike Cox, Todd Helms, Thomas Musselwhite, Frank Miller Jr., Hunter Odom, Chad Jones, Josh Canterbury and Joey Carter.

Honorary pallbearers were Grady and Mildred McBryant, Brinson Brock, Bob Evans, Bobby Sheppard, Don and Connie Tucker, Donnie Haralson, J.L. Dorough, Albert and Cecile Howard, Lane Dorough, Nesbitt and Nell Mathis, Tommy Hughes, Ed Arnett, Mickey Wright, Steve Bridges, Fred and Molly Thomas, Jeff Cobb, B.T. Braswell, Don and Gladys Waller, Freddie Harrington, Jimmy Mumphery, Doug Evans and Martha Jane and Tony LaPorte.

Robert Brice

TAMPA, Fla. -- Funeral services for Robert Brice, 86, formerly of Rochelle, Ga., will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Pine City Baptist Church in Rochelle. Burial will follow in Westview cemetery in Cordele, Ga. The Rev. Leon Dixon will officiate the services, directed by J.W. Williams Funeral Home of Cordele.

Mr. Brice died Sunday, May 4, 2003.

He was the former chairman of Thankful Baptist Church in Seville, and was a deacon at Pine City Baptist Church before moving to Florida. He was the son of the late Charlie and Corine Brice.

Survivors include three daughters, Robbie (Learin) McGruder, Dorothy Williams and Priscilla (Anthony) Carter, all of Tampa; two sisters, Jeffie Lue Briggs and Claudell Jackson, both of Jacksonville; a brother, Charlie (Ruth) Brice Jr. of Jacksonville; a devoted nephew, James (Elesa) Wooten of Tampa; grandchildren, Learon (Aurelia) McGruder, Stacey McGruder, Sgt. Robert McGruder, Kerisha Carter and Anthony Williams; and six great-grandchildren.

Annie Azilee McGahee

CORDELE -- Graveside funeral services for Annie Azilee McGahee, 81, of Cordele will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2003, in the Arabi cemetery with burial to follow. The Rev. Royce Freeman will officiate.

Mrs. McGahee died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at Crisp Regional Nursing & Rehab.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today, May 9, 2003.

Mrs. McGahee was the daughter of the late John Leon Adair and the late Lena Ingram Adair. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Lee McGahee. She was a member of Northern Heights Baptist Church and a homemaker.

She is survived by a son, Richard McGahee of Ashburn; a sister, Dorothy Manders of Cordele; and three granddaughters, Regina M. Odom of Cordele, Stephanie McGahee of Monticello and Stacey McGahee of Americus.

Hughes & Wright Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Marcus Neal Porter

CORDELE -- Funeral services for Marcus Neal Porter, 39, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Greater Morris Tabernacle Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery. The Rev. Kenneth M. Williams will officiate the services, directed by J.W. Williams Funeral Home.

Mr. Porter died Friday, May 23, 2003.

Deacon William O. Durham will perform a hymn and Fred Williams will offer words of prayer. Scripture will be read by the Rev. Curtis Bishop and Minister Isaac Owens. Various solos will be performed by Booker T. Chaney, Larry Coleman, Janie Porter and Michael West, and words of reflection will be given by family and friends. The family will be given an African-American heirloom bible as a keepsake on behalf of the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife, Rosalind J. Porter of Cordele; three step-sons, Tuvache Johnson and Ricky Dawson Jr. both of Cordele, and E4-Seaman Nicholas Johnson of New Orleans, La.; a step-daughter, Asia Dawson of Cordele; an adopted daughter, LaKeidrya Johnson of Cordele; his mother, Jessie Bell Porter of Cordele; sisters, Shirley Cleveland and Velana Bivens both of Cordele, Machanda (Rodney) Street of Atlanta, and Barbara (Charles) Ghee of Henrietta, N.Y.; brothers, Freddie Porter Jr., Melvin (Michelle) Porter and Gregory (Theresa) Porter all of Cordele; his grandmother, Lucille Porter of Cordele; his mother-in-law, Mattie M. Johnson of Cordele; his god-parents, Lonnie Brinson and Ann Green both of Cordele; nine uncles; 13 aunts, five great-aunts; two great-uncles; seven sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his father, the late Freddie L. Porter Sr.

Eric Bernard Lango

CORDELE -- Funeral services for Eric Bernard Lango, 17, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Bethel Baptist Church in Vienna. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery, Cordele. Dr. Bobby G. West will officiate the services, directed by J.W. Williams Funeral Home of Cordele.

Mr. Lango died Friday, May 23, 2003, in Crisp Regional Hospital.

The choir and congregation will sing a hymn of praise, followed by scripture read by Minister Woody Burnam. Nicole Oliver will read a poem written by Nyesha Allen and Tateka Bivens will sing a solo. Dr. West will give the eulogy and the funeral home staff will present the family an heirloom Bible.

He received his formal education in the public schools of Crisp County and was a rising senior at Crisp County High School.

Survivors include his mother, Gwendolyn Lango of Cordele; his brothers and sisters, Eddie C. (Sharonda) Hill of Montezuma, Travis Allen, Reneldia McKenzie and Ayofemi Lango all of Cordele; his great-grandfather, Johnny L. Lewis of Kingsland; his aunts and uncles, Hilda Lango of Cordele, Douglas (Rhonda) Bell of Augusta, and Tammy (Mark) Labidou of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two great-aunts and a great-uncle, Marion (Peter J.) Baker of Kingsland, Thelma Smith of Cordele, and Johnny (Mattie) Lewis III of Vienna; nieces and nephews, Seveka McKenzie, Zykerria Hill, Marquise Hill, La'Cambrian Lango, LaKendra Thorpe and Devontavius Hillsman; and cousins, Yashica Lango, Shalandra Lango, Maude Perry, Mercedez Lango, Dricen Green, Jacquelyn Bell, Douglas Bell Jr., Breanna Bell and Rose Labidou.
