Anna L. Wilson

CORDELE — Funeral services for Mrs. Anna L. Wilson will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 16 at the sanctuary of the Beulah Land Baptist Church, with the Pastor Melvin Blocker officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery.

Mrs. Wilson died April 11, 2005.

Survivors include her son, Ulysses Miller of Huntsville, Ala.; devoted cousin and caregiver, Vielene (Major) Jones of Albany; grandchildren, Geri Daniels and Ulysses Miller Sr., both of Huntsville, Ala., Robert Ray, Major J. Jones and Arie Jones, all of Albany; devoted cousins, Rosa Lee Womack of Jacksonville, Fla., and Brenda (James) Chisholm of Atlanta; several nieces and nephews whom she helped raise; devoted friends, Emma Shiloh and Isabella Beal, both of Cordele; the Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church Nursing Home Ministry of Albany and the staff of the Palmyra Nursing Home of Albany.

J.W. Williams Funeral Directors of Cordele and Vienna will be in charge of the arrangements.

George Fleming Baldwin

CORDELE — Funeral services for George Fleming Baldwin, 21, will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2005, at the A.S. Clark Elementary School auditorium. iIntermentwill follow in Westview Cemetery.

Mr. Baldwin died on Tuesday, April 12, 2005.

He leaves to cherish his memories his mother, Mrs. Shirley Baldwin Ray; father, Mr. Eddie L. Ray. He also leaves a host of other sorrowing relatives and friends.

Sadie B. Bridges

CORDELE — Sadie Best Bridges, 96, died at Crisp Regional Hospital Wednesday, April 20, 2005.

She was born Friday, July 9, 1908 in Bishopville, S.C. and was the daughter of the late Henry Ben Best and Margaret Jane Skinner Best, and the widow of Howard Elliott Bridges, Sr. Mrs. Bridges was a homemaker and a member of Cordele First United Methodist Church.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 22, 2005 at Sunnyside Cemetery.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sadie and Charles Glover and Patricia and Joel Haley, all of Cordele; a son and daughter-in-law, John Gordon and Sandra Bridges of Farmington, Missouri; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Howard Elliot “Sonny” Bridges, Jr. and siblings, Horace Best, Harry Best, Edward Best, Casey Ben Best, Ruth Page Davenport, Jennie Webb and Ruby Best.

The family may be contacted at the home of Sadie and Charles Glover at 701 East 14th Avenue and they will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, April 21, 2005 from 6 until 8 p.m.

Sadie Best Bridges

CORDELE — Graveside services for Sadie Best Bridges were held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 22, 2005, in Sunnyside Cemetery. The Rev. Tommy Mason and Layman Lee Guerry conducted the service and Rainey Family Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

The eulogy was given by Vicki Tipps. Beth Haley sang “In The Garden” acappella and J. Banks Haley accompanied himself on the guitar and sang “Home Where I Belong” and Miss Sadie’s favorite song, “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.”

W.C. Griggs Jr.

PINEHURST — - Funeral services for Mr. W.C. Griggs Jr. will be held at 3 p.m. today, April 24, 2005, at Pinehurst United Methodist Church with interment in Walnut cemetery in Unadilla.

Mr. Griggs died Friday, April 22 at Sumter Regional Hospital in Americus.

Born in Unadilla, he was the son of the late W.C. Griggs and Mary Pennington Griggs. He was a member of Pinehurst United Methodist Church and was an United States Army Air Corps veteran of WWII. He served as a navigator on a B-17 bomber which was shot down one week before D-Day and after parachuting to safety, he was captured and was a POW for almost a year. His medals include the Air Medal and the Purple Heart. He was a Pinehurst businessman after succeeding his father in the cotton warehouse business. He was the owner of Planters Warehouse, Griggs Gin Company and Griggs Farms. He was associate with several trade organizations, serving terms as president and chairman of the board of the Cotton Warehouse Association of America, president of the South Atlantic Cotton Warehouse Association and president of the Georgia Cotton Warehouse Association. He also served on the National Cotton Council Board of Directors. For many years he served as a member of the Dooly County Economic Development Authority. He was a past-president of Albany Oil Mill. He was a member of Millwood Masonic Lodge # 198 F & AM and the Dooly County Farm Bureau.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Warren Griggs of Unadilla and Marion “Buddy” Griggs of Palm Coast, Fla. His sister, Martha G. Clark of Jacksonville, Fla., also preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Christine Coker Griggs of Pinehurst; daughters, Gloria Griggs Conner of Unadilla and Pamela (Cim) Jenkins of Douglas; sons, W.C. “Billy” (Jane Russell) Griggs III of Unadilla and George C. (Laura Grogg) Griggs of Pinehurst; brother, John Durward Griggs of Macon; grandchildren, Kimberly Conner (Jeff) Barron of Unadilla, Erin Max (Kimberly Brown) Conner III of Vienna, Michael (Alicia Forehand) Conner of Pinehurst, Angie Griggs of Atlanta, Christy Griggs (Ray) Deal of Hilton Head, S.C., Keri (Brian) Dolan of St. Simons Island, William C. “Clegg” (Aimie Adair) Griggs IV of Unadilla, Jacob (Becky Fender) of Pinehurst, Nathaniel (Alicia Rucker) of Unadilla, Travis Jenkins of Douglas, and Joanna Jenkins of Douglas; great-grandchildren, Rebekah, Rachel and Bethany Barron of Unadilla, Anna Elizabeth Deal of Hilton Head, S.C., Patrick Russell Dolan of St. Simons Island, Elizabeth Karlyn Griggs of Unadilla, Caroline Conner and Erin Max Conner IV of Vienna and Ethan Rhett Griggs of Pinehurst.

Pallbearers will be grandsons Clegg Griggs, Jacob Griggs, Nathaniel Griggs, Tripp Conner, Michael Conner and Travis Jenkins.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pinehurst UMC, c/o Janelle Dupree, P.O. Box 162, Pinehurst, 31070; or to Magnolia Manor, 2001 S. Lee St., Americus, 31709 or to the donor’s favorite charity.

Louise Shell Morris

CORDELE — Louise Shell Morris, 91, died Monday, April 25, 2005, in Crisp Regional Nursing & Rehab.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 27, 2005, in the chapel of Hughes & Wright Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Morris, a native of Crisp County, was the daughter of the late George Harmon Shell and the late Iva Mae McGahee Shell. She was a member of Northern Heights Baptist Church and the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. She was a homemaker and the widow of Rowlins Dorsey Morris.

She is preceded in death by two brothers, Virgil Shell and R.T. Shell.

Survivors include her son, James (Joyce) Morris of Cordele; her brother, Harmon (Althea) Shell of Waycross; grandsons, Randy (Peggy) Morris and Les (Pam) Morris all of Cordele; and her great-grandchildren, Benji Morris, Timmi Morris, Kristi Morris and Kerri Morris.

Katherine Cape Medlock

PLAINS — Funeral services for Katherine Cape Medlock, 65, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, April 25, 2005, in the Plains United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Lebanon cemetery in Plains. The Revs. Mira Barrett and Rick Hamilton officiated the services.

Mrs. Medlock died Saturday, April 23, 2005, in Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany.

A native of Crisp County, she was born Sept. 10, 1939, the daughter of the late Charlie Fred Cape and Valera Branch Cape. She was retired from the State of Georgia Middle Flint Behavioral Health Care in Americus, and was a member of Plains United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Wade Medlock of Plains; a daughter, Mary Ann Ledger of Plains; a son and a daughter-in-law, Parks Medlock and Kim of Crestview, Fla.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Vonnie Young and Roy of Plains, and Jean Bodrey of Cordele; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles Cape and Lenora of Gainesville, and Tim Cape of Cordele; six grandchildren, Aleigha Pouliot, Abbey Pouliot, Zach Pouliot, Zoe Medlock, Elise Medlock and Emma Medlock; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a baby daughter, Sheila Ruth Medlock in 1963.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Plains United Methodist Church, 305 W. Church Street, Plains, Ga., 31780 or to Phoebe Hospitel Suites, 417 Third Ave., Albany, Ga., 31701.

Marie P. Wiley

PENSACOLA, Fla., — Funeral services for Marie P. Wiley, 83, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 7, 2005, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North with Dr. Ted Traylor and the Rev. Eugene Steele officiating. The burial will be in the Bayview Memorial Park.

Active pallbearers will be Jonathan Wiley, Bob Ervin, Eric Ervin, Bruce Smith, Greg Price and Gene Myatt. Honorary pallbearers will be Marie’s friends from the Faith Sunday School Class at Olive Baptist Church.

Mrs. Wiley, “Mom, ” died Monday afternoon, April 4, 2005, at a Pensacola hospital.

She was born October 26, 1921, in Cordele where she and her husband lived until 1986 when they moved to Pensacola. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Byron Wiley in 1988 and her parents Hoyt and Pearl Puckett.

Marie was a vibrant, witty and selfless person. Her endearing personality was infectious. Those who were blessed to know her will miss her smile and positivity.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Gayle Wiley; her brother, David Puckett; sister, Modena Lisenby; grandchildren, Wendy Kimbro and Jonathan Wiley; and great-grandchildren, Ashlynn and Madison Kimbro.

The family extends their sincerest gratitude to the wonderful doctors and nurses who attended her at West Florida Hospital CCU.

Archie N. McKay

SKY VALLEY, Nev. — Archie N. McKay, 67, passed away on March 31, 2005, while on an extended visit to Nevada.

Mr. McKay, a native of Wilcox County, was a journalist who worked as a reporter, managing editor and editor on newspapers in Georgia including the Tifton Gazette, the Cordele Dispatch, the Macon Telegraph, and the Valdosta Daily Times. He won numerous journalistic awards during his career. He served honorably in the United States Army from 1957-1960, spending most of his service time in Germany.

Mr. McKay was active in communities in which he lived. He belonged to Big Brothers while in Macon and served on the Lowndes County and South Georgia Library Boards and the YMCA Board of Directors while in Valdosta. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Valdosta. With his wife, Cuba, he coauthored "A Pictorial History of Rabun County" for the Rabun County Historical Society in 2003. He was an avid ham radio operator and a private pilot.

A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. April 16, 2005, in the Chapel of Sky Valley. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, or another charity of choice.

Mr. McKay is survived by a wife, Cuba Spivey McKay of Sky Valley; a daughter and a son-in-law, Janis McKay and Bill Bernatis of Las Vegas, Nev.; a son, Archie N. McKay, Jr. (Nick) of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two sisters, Ellen McLeod of Tifton and Lillian Masters of Cordele; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Loyce E. Harpe

MULBERRY, Fla. — Graveside services for Loyce E. Harpe, 61, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, at Sunnyside Cemetery.

Mr. Harpe died Tuesday, April 5, 2005.

A native of Wilcox County, he was employed at Polk County Parks and Recreation as a director. He was the son of the late Loy Harpe.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Harpe of Mulberry, Fla.; his mother, Sarah Simmons Harpe of Cordele; two sons, Derek Earl (Stacie) Harpe of Ft. Meade, Fla., and Drew Allen (Angela) Harpe of Brandon, Fla.; two sisters, Brenda Ward of Cordele and Diane Montgomery of Memphis, Tenn.; two grandsons, Glavine Harpe and Kadin Harpe, both of Ft. Mead, Fla.; and one granddaughter, Kamryn Harpe of Ft. Meade, Fla.

Memorials can be made to Friends of the Park Foundation in Polk County, Fla.

Mary Alice Avery

SYCAMORE — Graveside services for Mary Alice Avery, 74, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 8, 2005, in Bethel Cemetery. Perry Funeral Chapel has charge of these arrangements.

Mrs. Avery died Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at Tift Health Care following a lengthy illness.
