Betty Thomas
1934-2004
Betty Jo Thomas, 70, Old Hodges Mill Road passed away on Saturday May 29, 2004.

A native of Oglethorpe County, Mrs. Thomas was the daughter of the late James E. and Minnie Broome Waldroup. Her husband Joseph P. Thomas preceded her in death. Mrs. Thomas was a homemaker and a member of the Promise Land Baptist Church.

Survivors include sons Edwin Thomas and John Thomas both of Bogart; daughters Vicki Gaines of Atlanta; Sandra Rowland of Hull; Shelby Scarco of Escondido, CA and Cathy Mize of Farmington, 10 grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11AM Tuesday at Evergreen Memorial Park with Brother David Dawson officiating.

The family will receive friends at Bernstein from 6-9PM Monday.

Richard Neil Ford

IDEAL — A memorial service for Richard Neil Ford was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006, in Stillwater Chapel in Ideal. The Rev. Jenny Peterson conducted the service and Rainey Family Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Remarks were given by several members of the congregation. Bonnie Derrington, pianist, played soft music for the service.

Edna Greene Adkins

CORDELE — Funeral services for Edna Greene Adkins of Cordele were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006, in the chapel of Rainey Family Funeral Services with Elder Raybon Lord and the Rev. James Kelly officiating.

Marcene Freeman, pianist, played soft music and accompanied herself and the Rev. Royce Freeman as they sang “I’ll Meet You In The Morning.” The Priest Family sang “Amazing Grace.” Todd Priest sang “Another Saint Is Coming Home” at the close of the service.

Pallbearers were Michael Barrett, Danny Adkins, Donald Adkins, Bill Priest, Todd Priest, Jeffrey Priest and Billy Greene.

iIntermentfollowed at Arabi cemetery and was officiated by Rev. Bill Kent.

Barbara Ann McCray

CORDELE — Funeral services for Barbara Ann McCray will be held at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 24 in the chapel of J.W. Williams Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Andersonville National Cemetery, Andersonville. Her brother-in-law, Min. Charles Wimberly Sr., will officiate the services.

Mrs. McCray died Monday, Nov. 13, 2006.

She was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include her husband, Jimmie McCray of Cordele; daughters, Tracy McCray of Albany, and Keesha McCray of Cordele; her father, Otis Douglas Sr. of Climax; sisters, Helen (Gohnneil) Brown of Climax, Lula (Joseph) Coley of Georgetown, Joyce (Charles Sr.) Wimberly of Tallahassee, Fla., and Selessia (George) Berry of Columbus; brothers, L.C. (Emma) Douglas Sr. of Climax, Otis (Pearl) Douglas Jr. of Gainesville, Fla., Joseph (Shirley) Douglas and Bradley Douglas of Thomasville; a brother-in-law, Willie Brooks Sr. of Albany; granddaughters, Wonyetta Simmons and Shanita McCray of Cordele, and Shyliacia Johnson of Albany; an aunt, Lessie Mae Crawford of Climax; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Juanita Wood

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. - Juanita Alberta Cox Wood, 90, a Cordele native, died Dec. 26, 2006, at the Presbyterian Home in Summerville, S.C.

Mrs. Wood was the widow of the late John Ira Wood, Jr. who died in 1988. She was born Oct. 3, 1916, a daughter of the late Thomas Hampton Cox and Juanita Alberta Riles Cox.

A graduate of Cordele High School, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Eastern Star. She moved with her family to Macon in 1957 and to Atlanta in 1965. Mr. and Mrs. Wood moved to Walterboro, S.C. in 1981 and Mrs. Wood moved to Summerville, S.C. in 1999.

She is survived by her sons, Dr. Samuel E. Wood (Linda) of Summerville, and Col. John I. Wood III (Randi) of Raleigh, N.C.; grandsons, John Michael Geoffrey Wood (Adrian) of Ridgeville, S.C., and Samuel Dallas Christopher Wood (Jennie) of Summerville; granddaughters, Hagan A. Wood (Brett Poziombka) of Woodridge, Ill., and Heather C. Wood of Brunswick; a great-grandson, Samuel E. Wood of Summerville; and great-granddaughters, Whitney E. Johnson of Riverridge, La., and Lilly M. Wood of Brunswick.

She was predeceased by her sister, Edna Sheppard, and brothers, Samuel Eugene Cox (late city manager of Cordele) and Lt. Earl Wayne Cox (USN).

Mary Lupyon
1918-2004
Mary Toth Lupyon, resident of Morningside of Athens, 1291 Cedar Shoals Dr. passed away on Saturday April 17, 2004.

A long time resident of Thorpe, W. VA., Mrs. Lupyon, was the daughter of the late Louis and Theresa Chikas Toth, Sr. Her husband, Paul Lupyon, Sr. preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Elizabeth Leach; Anna Popovich, and Theresa Berentes, brothers Gabor Toth and Louis Toth, Jr. Mrs. Lupyon was a retired retail sales clerk and a member of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include a daughter Barbara Smith, of Athens and son Paul Lupyon, Jr., of New Port News, VA.; sisters Helen Spychala, Bloomfield, N.J. and Margaret Cochran, Beckley, W. VA.; grandchildren Paul Lupyon, III, Garry Lupyon, Jennifer Lupyon and Cynthia Wilbanks; great grandchildren, Whitney Ann Veal and Christopher Todd Veal;

a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2PM at the Woodlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Bluewell, W.VA. The family asks in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to the Atlanta Area Chapter of the Alzheimer Association, 1925 Century Blvd. Suite 10, Atlanta, Ga 30345.

Henry Burden

CORDELE — Funeral Services for U. S. Airforce Veteran Henry Jake Burden will be held Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007 at 1:00pm in the Sanctuary of the Greater Morris Tabernacle Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Veteran section of the Bethel Cemetery, Cordele, Ga. with the Pastor, Rev. K. M. Williams officiating.

Mr. Burden died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007, at his residence in Cordele.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife, Mrs. Fay Kendrick of Cordele, Ga., Two loving daughters, Miss Myra O. Burden of Atlanta, Ga. and Ms. Yvonne Johnson of Avondale, Arizona. One devoted son, Mr. Jeffrey Burden of Jacksonville, Fla., One devoted step-son, Mr. Travis Kendrick of Cordele, Ga.

His loving mother, Mrs. Lou Ella Dixon Burden of Cordele, Ga., Two loving Aunts, Mrs. Viola Reeves of Cleveland, Ohio and Mrs. Leola Jones of Warner Robins, Ga. One beloved Uncle, Mr. William Dixon of Syracuse, N.Y. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many sorrowing friends survive. J.W. Williams Funeral Directors of Cordele and Vienna have charge of arrangements.

Frances Spurlin

CORDELE — Graveside services for Frances Shirah Spurlin, 78, will be held Today at 2 p.m. Jan.7 at Sunnyside Cemetery. Mrs. Spurlin of Cordele, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007 at Cordele Health & Rehab. She was a member of Third Street Baptist Church where she had served as the church clerk, she was a member of the missionary committee and taught Sunday school for over 10 years. She was preceeded in death by her father and mother Bennie Abner Shirah and Annie Lee Morris Shirah. She was the wife of the late Thomas Jefferson Spurlin. She is survived by two daughters Laurie Spurlin Wright and Andrea Spurlin and a granddaughter Kathleen Wright all of Cordele. The family is meeting at the home of Laurie Wright. Arrangements are being handled by Rainey Family Funeral Services, Inc.

Frances S. Spurlin

CORDELE - Graveside services for Frances Shirah Spurlin were held on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Sunnyside Cemetery.

Rev. Brent Duncan officiated with Layman Lee Guerry delivering a eulogy. Ramona Hickox sang, "There is Something about That Name."

Arrangements were handled by Rainey Family Funeral Services, Inc.

William A. ‘Tiny’ Gregory

VIENNA — Funeral services for William A. “Tiny” Gregory, 84, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Jan. 7 in the chapel of Brannen-NeSmith Funeral Home in Vienna. Burial will follow in the Vienna City cemetery with military honors. Brannen-NeSmith Funeral Home of Vienna has charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Gregory died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2007, at his residence.

Minerva Cole Woodroof

NEWNAN — Graveside funeral services for Minerva Cole Woodroof, 84, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, in the Cole family section of Oak Hill cemetery with Dr. Joel Richardson officiating.

Mrs. Woodroof died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, at Wesley Woods of Newnan-Peachtree City.

She was born Feb. 5, 1922, in Newnan to the late Edward Guy and Minerva Hunter Cole. Mrs. Woodroof was a member of Central Baptist Church, the Newnan Junior Service League and the Driftwood Garden Club. She had been president of the Atkinson School PTA and was a member of the Newnan Hospital Red Cross which later became the Pink Ladies. She also was a leader of her children’s Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Brannen Woodroof, and her siblings, Edward Guy Cole Jr., Annie Cole Jones, Susan Cole Arnall and Frances Cole Arnall.

Survivors include her daughter, Minerva Woodroof Winslow of Newnan; sons, William Cole Woodroof and wife, Dottie Way Woodroof of Cordele, and Charles Brannen Woodroof Jr. and wife, Phyllis Dashiell Woodroof of Florida; grandchildren, Holly Winslow Mitchell and husband, Dr. Eric Stephen Mitchell, Mary Margaret Woodroof, William Cole Woodroof Jr., Charles Brannen Woodroof III and wife, Andrea Hancock Woodroof; and great-grandchildren, Callie Brannen Mitchell, Kathryn Brannen Woodroof and William Robert Woodroof.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Central Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1221, Newnan, Ga., 30264.

Don Ware

ABBEVILLE — Graveside services for Don Ware, 79, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9 at Stubbs cemetery in Abbeville with the Revs. Chuck Taylor and Talmadge Wilcox officiating. Frazier and Son Funeral Home of Rochelle had charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Ware died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, in the Carl Vinson V.A. Medical Center in Dublin.

Derrick Shawnathan Cunningham

CORDELE — Funeral services for Derrick Shawnathan Cunningham, 8 1/2 months, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11 in the sanctuary of the Cornerstone Church of God By Faith, with burial to follow in Bethel Cemetery. Elder James Patterson Jr. will officiate the services.

William Wellons

William Wellons of Cordele died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2006, at his residence. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by J.W. Williams Funeral Home of Cordele and Vienna. The family may be contacted at 2494 Culpepper Road, Cordele.

Versie H. Woodruff

SYCAMORE — Funeral services for Versie H. Woodruff, 93, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 in Sycamore Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Rose Hill cemetery in Ashburn. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Perry Funeral Chapel of Ashburn has charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Woodruff died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, in Tift Health Care following a brief illness.

Leatus Wibanks
1923-2004
Athens, GA

Leatus Saunders Wilbanks, 80. of Kings Road died Monday, October 11, 2004.

A native of Jackson County, Mr. Wilbanks was the son of the late Walter and Lois Davis Wilbanks. He retired after 25 years with the Westinghouse Electric in Quality Control. At present he was co-owner of Jack & Jill Child Care Center. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served in World War II, active in the Boy Scouts of America, and an avid fisherman. He was a member of Beech Haven Baptist Church and a loving and patient husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife, Clara Beavers Wilbanks of Athens; sons: Mike Wilbanks and James Nelson Wilbanks both of Bogart; daughters: Connie Diane West of Watkinsville and Wanda Jane Nunn of Bogart; sister, Geneva Wilson of Albertville, AL; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, October 14, 2004 at 4:00 p.m. at Beech Haven Baptist Church with Dr. Stewart Simms, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will grandsons and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 at Bernstein Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Atlanta Area Chapter of the Alzheimer Association, 1925 Century Blvd, Ste 10, Atlanta, GA 30345.

Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
