Horace B. Howell

Horace B. Howell, 93, of Fitzgerald, died Saturday, March 29 at Tift Regional Hospital in Tifton.
Mr. Howell was born November 21, 1914 in Lawrence County, Alabama to Willie and Nellie McClusky Howell. He moved to Ben Hill County in 1937 and was a retired farmer, having been named the 1971 Farmer of the Year for Ben Hill County. Mr. Howell was a former member of the Farm Bureau and a member of the ASCS Committee. He was a member of the Baraca Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church and a former deacon at New Prospect Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Jimmie W. (Patricia) Howell of Tifton; daughter, Martha Ellen (Rev. Dan) Hughes of Claxton; grandchildren, Michael (Leah) Howell of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., Kyle (Jennifer) Howell of Tifton and Robert Hughes of Douglas; sisters, Josephine Dutton and Sybil Morgan, both of Moulton, Ala.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Key Howell.
Graveside services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 1 at the Evergreen cemetery with the Rev. Dan Hughes officiating.

Sallie Kate Evans

Sallie Kate Evans, 78, passed away March 29 at The Place at Pooler in Pooler, Ga. She lived most of her life in Savannah. She loved to sew and was a dedicated housewife.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Aron B. and son Bernnie B. Evans.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Charlie S. and Wanda of Rincon and Wayne and Mary of Ellabell; two daughters and sons-in-law, Glennis and Ricky Boyles of Rincon, Kay and Marion Isom of Savannah; two brothers, Jay Williamson of McRae, Bobby Williamson of Savannah; three sisters, Marjorie Lee of Savannah, Betty Moore of Twin City and Bonnie Phillips of Rincon; eight grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 1, 11 a.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Evergreen Church Cemetery.

Ella Quida Tucker

Ella Quida Tucker, 81, passed away May 3 at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Bulloch County native lived most of her life in Evans County. She was of Methodist faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elwyn Tucker Sr.; her son, Junior Tucker; daughters, Linda T. Hallman, Ellen Strickland; grandson, Shane Evans.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Ray Snellgrove of Claxton; a daughter-in-law, Denise Tucker of Claxton; a son-in-law, Theron Hallman of Glennville; one half sister, Kathaleen Costa of Connecticut; one half brother, Bobby Kerby of Colorado; seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday, May 5 at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Hagan officiating. Burial was in Ephesus Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Scott Snellgrove, Derek Hallman, Jason Tucker, Danny, Charles and Jerry Kerby.

Charlie Michael Johnson Jr.

Charlie Michael “Little Mike” Johnson Jr., 46, passed away Sunday, May 4 at East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro. Michael was born February 15, 1962. He was a naive of Evans County and graduated from Claxton High School in 1980. He was employed with Valmont-Newmark for 22 years.
Michael enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a wonderful son, brother, uncle, nephew and cousin. He will be dearly missed by all of his friends and family.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Charlie Michael Johnson Sr.
Surviving are his mother, Donna Johnson of Claxton; sisters, Debbie Anderson of Claxton and Angel Malcom of Anchorage, Alaska; nieces, KayLeigh Anderson of Claxton and Kate Malcom of Anchorage, Alaska, and nephew, Eli Malcom of Anchorage, Alaska.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 7, 2 p.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home with the Rev. David Hagan officiating. Burial was in Brewton cemetery in Hagan.
Pallbearers were Warnell ‘Big’ Brewton, Dan Conner, Trey Flanigan, Stanley Mincey, Mike Smith and Joey Todd.

George Howard West

George Howard West, 77, of Claxton went home to his Lord and Savior Saturday, June 8 at St. Joseph’s Hospital following a short illness.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, W.A. and Ruby West of Candler County and twin sons.
Howard is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Shirley Cameron West of Claxton; one daughter, Teri West Gary (Patrick) of Pooler; one granddaughter, Meloni Walker Hutcheson (Michael) of Claxton; one grandson, FC2 Robert W. Kight II USN of Jacksonville, Fla.; six great grandchildren, Dalton Hutcheson, Myah Walker, Andrew Walker, Dylan Walker, Madison Walker, and Kelsey Walker, all of Claxton; two brothers, Carlton West (Ruth) of Savannah and Wendell West (Joan) of Metter; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Howard was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1959. Howard retired from Equifax in 1991. He was an active member and a Deacon of Evergreen Baptist Church and was also active in the Evans County Gideons Association. He was active in service to many civic and religious organizations: Evans County 4-H from 1992-1999; Road Runners Camping Club; Southern Baptist Association Disaster Relief Team; Evans County Classics Car Club; S.A.R.A. Ham Radio; and Evergreen F.A.I.T.H. Riders Christian Motorcycle/Car Ministries.
Howard touched the lives of countless people in his community and beyond. He drove an Evans County School Bus for many years, acquiring the love and admiration of many Evans County students. Howard was faithful in his service to the Lord and he touched many lives with his gentle and quiet nature.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home in Claxton. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 12 from 5-8 p.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home.
Funeral and graveside services will be held Thursday, June 13 at 11 a.m. at Evergreen Baptist Church, Cobbtown, Ga.
Remembrances can be made in his memory to Evergreen Baptist Church or Gideons International.

Wayne Anthony Kitchens

Wayne Anthony Kitchens, 55, passed away May 31 at St. Joseph Hospital in Savannah. He was a native and lifelong resident of Evans County and a member of Eason’s Chapel Methodist Church.
Wayne was preceded in death by his mother, Francis Eason Kitchens, and his grandparents, Felton and Fannie Eason and John Ed and Clara Kitchens.
Surviving are his father and step-mother, Reginald and JoAnn Kitchens of Claxton; his son, Kody Kitchens of Claxton; two step-sisters, Denise Crews and Crystal Cody, both of Claxton; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 3, 11 a.m., at Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will be in Eason Family Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Shane Eason, Michael Eason, Harry Eason, Bo Eason, Keith Anderson and Brian Odom.

Nora Mable Blakey Reed

Nora Mable Blakey Reed, age 90, passed away Saturday, May 25 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro. She was born December 14, 1922, the daughter of Harvey Wooten and Herman Whitener Blakey of Sylvania, Ga. Mable married James Reed December 26, 1943. She graduated from Screven County High School in 1941 and from Brewton Parker Junior College in 1943. She attended Mercer University in 1944 and attended WMU, Women’s Missionary Union and Training School at Carver School of Missions and Social Work in Louisville, Ky. from 1945-46. She graduated from Georgia Southern College in 1963 with a BS in Education and completed postgraduate work from 1966-68.
Mrs. Reed was active in all levels of WMU denominational work while at Garden City Baptist Church and at Claxton First Baptist Church. She was past-president of WMU for Tattnall-Evans Association, and State WMU Divisional President. Mable was an active member of First Baptist Church. She had been a teacher for Young Adult Women and Primary Classes. She was the Leader for Intermediate Baptist Training Union for many years. She was a member of the Fidelis Class, was the assistant teacher for a number of years, and was president of Prime Timers from 1993-2002.
Being a schoolteacher, she taught at Claxton Elementary School for six years and in 1970, she began a 19-year teaching career at Pinewood Christian Academy. In 1976, she was presented the Pinewood Christian Academy Award for Unselfish Service and in 1988, she was the PCA Teacher of the Year. After retirement, she was a substitute for PCA.
She was an American Cancer Society volunteer for Evans County. In 1984, she received an award for Outstanding Public Education efforts at PCA and received many awards from the State ACS for Public Education.
Mrs. Reed was a member of the “Senior Citizens Planning Committee” in Evans County in 1994, working with the recreational director, for the establishment of the Senior Wellness Facility in honor of Dr. Curtis Hames Sr. She lived in Claxton for 49 years before moving to Goldsboro, N.C. to be near her son, James Henry Reed and his family. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Goldsboro, N.C., Fidelis/Dorcas Sunday School Class, Ministry and Missions, and the WMU Support Group.
She is survived by her son, James Henry Reed and wife Gretchen of Goldsboro, N.C.; grandchildren, James Andrew Reed and wife, Anne of Raleigh, N.C. and Sally Mershon Reed of Wilmington, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Davis Andrew Reed and Avery Smith Reed, of Raleigh, N.C.; sisters, Juanita Blakey Blocker of Decatur, Ga. and Bessie Blakey Strange of Dublin, Ga.; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey Wooten and Herman Bessie Whitener Blakey; husband, Rev. James Rufus Reed; son, Carl Stanley Reed; brothers, James Wooten Blakey and wife, Ruby, Lawrence Bennie Blakey and wife, Marilu, Jessie Rollin Blakey, and Amos Churchill Blakey and wife, Laurie; sisters, Martha Ann Blakey Zittrouer and husband, George; and a sister-in-law, Sylvia Bazemore Blakey.
Visitation: will be from 9-11 a.m. Friday, May 31 at Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow at Mellie NeSmith Funeral Chapel. The family will be receiving friends at the home of James and Gretchen Reed, 1203 Beech St., Goldsboro, N.C. 28350.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to either First Baptist Church of Claxton, First Baptist Church of Goldsboro, or a charity of your choice.

Ricky LeRoy Sermons

Ricky LeRoy Sermons, 65, passed away at his home on Saturday May 25. He was a native of McPherson, Kansas and a member of Beaver Creek Baptist Church and also in the U.S.M.C. and Vietnam Veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Ann Sermons of Claxton; three sons, James Sermons, Russell Sermons (Kassie), both of Claxton and Ricky Sermons of Jacksonville Fla.; one daughter, Tiffany Williams of Claxton; six sisters, Christy (BO) Mullins of Pikeville, Tenn., Sherrie (Bobbie) McBee of Morristown, Tenn., Faye McLamb of Nahunta, Ga., Barbara Nelson of Glennville, Ga., Sandy Ginn of Thompson, Ga. and Mike (Ann) Brozway of Baxley, Ga.; 11 grandchildren.
Visitation will be Tuesday, May 28, 6-8 p.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 29, 11 a.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Chapel.
Burial will be in Antioch Church Cemetery.

Maria Cannon Hodges

Maria Cannon Hodges, age 50, passed away early Thursday, May 16 at her residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. She was born in Claxton and was a longtime resident of Statesboro. Maria taught at Lanier Primary School for 25 years and attended Pittman Park United Methodist Church. She enjoyed reading, going to the beach and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her devoted husband, Les Hodges; two daughters, McKenzie Lee Hodges and Leslee Maria Hodges, all of Statesboro; her parents, Doris and Harry Cannon of Claxton; her sister, Jenny (Trey) Price of Claxton; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ronnie and Connie Hodges; her sister-in-law, Patrice (Chris) Wickham; one special aunt, Mary Ann “Aunt Mae” Lee of Claxton; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 18 at 11 a.m. at Pittman Park United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tim Steffen officiating.
iIntermentwas in Bulloch Memorial Gardens.
Honorary pall bearers were the faculty and staff of Lanier Primary School and the Statesboro First United Methodist Church United Methodist Men.
