Jane Little

Union County native, member of Baptist church
Jane Emma McClure Little, 75, of Blairsville, died March 20, 2004, in the Murphy Medical Center Nursing Home following an extended illness.
Little was born on April 7, 1928, in Cherokee County, N.C. She was the daughter of the late Tom McClure and the late Amy Lovinggood McClure.
She was a lifelong resident of Union County. Little was preceded in death by her husband Ford Little in 1989, and by brothers Noah McClure, Lloyd McClure, Albert McClure, Porter McClure and Jerry McClure and sister Virginia Richards.
Little was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Joanne Gower of Lawrenceville, Ga., Jackie and Danny Dillard of Blairsville, Janie Little and Mike Postell of Blairsville; sons and daughter-in-law Johnny and Betty Dillard of Murphy, and Reid Little of Blairsville; brothers and sisters-in-law Hadley and Geneva McClure of Blairsville, and Bobby and Marie McClure of Culberson; sister Pearl Richards of Morganton; sisters-in-law Lillie McClure and Minnie McClure; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on March 23 at 2 p.m. from the Bethany Baptist Church with the Rev. David Timmer and the Rev. Waymon Lovell officiating. Special music was presented by Dianne Parker.
Pallbearers included Travis Stalcup, Kevin Stalcup, Justin Dillard, Johnny McClure, Jimmy McClure and Daniel Webster. iIntermentfollowed in the church cemetery.
Mountain View Funeral Home of Blairsville was in charge of the arrangements.

Wilma Chastain

Universal grandmother and friend who met no stranger
Wilma Paralee, better known as Bill, Chastain, 74, of the Grassy Creek cmmunity, died March 20, 2004, following an extended illness.
Born in Coker Creek, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late William Hobert Rose and Lola Payne Rose, a member of the Mount Zion (Tumbling Creek) Church, a universal grandmother and friend who never met a stranger.
She was preceded in death by sons Thomas William Chastain and Eddie Arnold Chastain, brothers Millard Rose and Roy B. Rose, and grandson Michael Chastain.
Survivors include her husband Grady Chastain of the home; daughter and son-in-law June and Jim Patterson of Copperhill; brother Casey Rose of Coker Creek; sisters Alma Green and Mary Millsaps both of Sweetwater, Tenn.; aunt and uncle Media and Odis Davis of Coker Creek; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held March 21 at 3 p.m. from the Akins of Blue Ridge chapel with the Rev. Lloyd Deal and the Rev. Gerald Payne officiating. Music was by the Deal Family. iIntermentfollowed in the Chastain Cemetery.
Pallbearers included Matthew Deal, Randy Deal, Kyle Ballew, Bryan Allen, C.M. Talley, Jimmy Payne and John Konnerman.
Memorial contributions may be made in honor of Chastain to the American Cancer Society.
Akins Funeral Home of Blue Ridge was in charge of the arrangements.

Randy Beavers

Born in Gilmer County, worked in lumber business
Randy Beavers, 42, of Blue Ridge, died June 1, 2004, at the Copper Basin Medical Center.
Beavers was born Nov. 28, 1961 to Zane Gray Beavers and Leona Ledford Beavers in Gilmer County, Ga. He worked as a laborer in the lumber business.
Survivors include his wife Becky Beavers of Blue Ridge; mother Leona Beavers of Blue Ridge; stepfather Edward Tip Dills of Blue Ridge; sisters and brothers-in-law Patty Ray of Isabella, Tenn., Mona and Barry Messer of Blue Ridge, Karen and Lather Pinson of Ellijay; brothers Jeffery Beavers of Blue Ridge; stepbrothers Eddie Dills, Mike Dills and Stanley Mus Dills, all of Blue Ridge; and stepbrother and sister-in-law Jeff and Angela Dills of Blue Ridge; stepsister Susie Dills of Ellijay; nieces Kim Martin, April Pinson, Patricia Pinson and Sarah Messer; nephews Daniel Pinson; great-nephews Zane and Zachary Pinson.
Funeral services were held June 4 at 2 p.m. from the Henry-Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold Weeks officiating. Pallbearers included Lather Pinson, Bo Pinson, Robert Nicholson, Gary Martin, Daniel Pinson and Jeff Dills. iIntermentfollowed in the Sugar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Henry-Cochran Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Alvin Hyde

Pastored many churches, native of Fannin County
The Rev. Alvin E. “Bud” Hyde, 82, of Morganton, died June 1, 2004, at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Ga. He was born Sept. 22, 1921, in Mineral Bluff, the son of the late Herve and Desmer (Cole) Hyde. The Rev. Hyde was a member of the Coopers Creek Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by sister Regina Morris Radford and brothers J.N. and Buil Hyde.
The Rev. Hyde received his ordination on Aug. 12, 1950 at the Concord Baptist Church. He pastored many local churches in the Tri-State area for 50 years until his health no longer permitted after having a stroke in 1987. He still had concern for the Lord’s work, and spent many hours in prayer.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years Gertrude (Nicholson) Hyde of the home; daughter and son-in-law Katherine and James Bruce of Mannford, Okla.; sisters Gerlene Helton of Suches, and Joann Hyde Kanapolis of North Carolina; grandchildren Mary Borges, Joanna Dyer and James A. Bruce, Jr.; great-grandchildren Andrew Dyer, Nathan Borges and Anna Borges.
Funeral services were held June 4, at 3 p.m. from the Star Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Earl Pickelsimer and the Rev. William Buddy Suits officiating.
Pallbearers included Tim Helton, William Mashburn, Edward Hyde, Justin Turner, John Carter, Melvin Turner and Tommy Lee Sprinkles. Music was by Eagle Mountain Quarter and Willie Mae Puett. iIntermentfollowed in the Chastain Memorial Park Cemetery.

Joyce Harmon

Former resident of Polk County, worked as an R.N.
Joyce Nix Harmon, 65, formerly of Copperhill and resident of Port Richey, Fla., died at her home on May 13, 2004, following several months illness.
She was a 1957 graduate of Copper Basin High School and from nursing school in Florida.
She worked as a registered nurse for more than 20 years, with the last 10 years being employed by Tandem Health Care in Hudson, Fla.
Her parents were the late Oscar B. and Emily Locke Nix who were from Copperhill.
Survivors include a daughter Denise Nix of Spring Hill, Fla.; brothers and sisters JoAnn Townsend of Cumming, Ga., Jewel King of Madison, Ala., Thomas W. Nix of Chicago, Ill., Jerry Nix of Turtletown and Ruby Turner and Tony Nix, both of Blue Ridge.
A memorial service was held at the Tandem Health Care Center in Hudson, Fla., another service was held at the Trinity Baptist church in Madison, Ala. Graveside services and interment were at the Mountain View Baptist Church and cemetery in McCaysville on May 30.
Preacher Jimmy Dickey officiated and music was by the Heavenly Vision Trio.
Cochran Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Marie Hogsed

Native of North Carolina, survived by family
Marie M. Hogsed, 74, of Murphy, died June 4, 2004, in a Murphy hospital. Hogsed was a native of Cherokee County, where she had lived most of her life.
She was the daughter of the late Jewell and Lillie Mae Parnell Self and the wife of the late John Everett Hogsed, who died Jan. 28, 1995. She was a member of the Bear Paw Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Teresa Palmer.
Survivors include daughters Mary Alice Riley of Clayton, Ga., Louise Watkins of Young Harris, Ga., and Johnnie Loudermilk of Copperhill; son James Rose of Fairmont, Ga.; sisters Edgal Chilson of Warne, Rethal Hogsed and Geneva Floyd both of Murphy, Joy Domeny of Savannah, Ga., and Juanita Childers of Clover, S.C.; half-sisters Fostine Richardson and Faye Ellen Hall, both of Gastonia, N.C.; step-sister Mary Nell Ricketson of Charlotte, N.C.; half-brother J.C. Self of Gastonia; and eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held June 6, at 4 p.m. in the Bear Paw Baptist Church with the Rev. Doug Howard and the Rev. Lee Chastain officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Maynard Hogsed, Junior Hogsed, Charles Hogsed, Chris Palmer, Jay Yeary and Don Bradshaw. Honorary pallbearers were Matthew Rosendale, Jason Loudermilk and Garland Hogsed.
The family request memorials be made to the Bear Paw Baptist Church cemetery Fund, 850 Oak Grove Road, Murphy, N.C. 28906.
Ivie Funeral Home of Murphy was in charge of the arrangements.

Julia Turner

Resident of Chatsworth, known as “Granny”
Julia Mae “Granny” Turner, 90, of Chatsworth, died June 2, 2004, at her residence.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Parris Turner. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Betty and Clarence Manis; grandchildren Debbie and Ricky Saylors and Karen Parton; great grandson Gregg Parton; great-granddaughter Brittany Patterson; brother Claude Morrison and sister Myrtle Roberts, all of Chatsworth; nieces nephews; and special nephew Alvin Morrison of Lincoln, Mich.
Funeral services were held June 5 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Peeples Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Gardner and the Rev. William Silvers officiating. iIntermentfollowed in the Eton cemetery with the release of the White Dove Memories ceremony. Peeples Funeral Home and Crematory of Chatsworth was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Tanner Janes

Resident of Hayesville, formerly of Florida
Tanner Virgil Janes, of Hayesville, N.C, for the past two months, formerly of Lady Lake, Fla., died June 4, 2004.
Survivors include his wife Leah M. Janes, of Hayesville N.C.; daughters Dorothy Winkelmann of Ft. Worth, Texas, Kay Giammetta of Macon, Ga., and Cindy Carpenter of Hayesville; son Larry Janes of Mount Zion, Ill; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Cochran Funeral Home of Murphy, N.C. was in charge of the arrangements.

Ruby Howell

Member of the Iris Club, was a pink lady
Ruby B. Howell, 93, of Blue Ridge died Saturday, June 5, 2004, at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.
Howell was born in Polk County on April 16, 1911, to the late Mark and Detta Copp Burnette. She retired as the head payroll clerk at Fort McPherson army post where she worked for several years.
Howell was a pink lady at Fannin Regional Hospital, a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church, as well as a member of the Merry Makers, the United Methodist Women, NAARF, Iris Garden Club, and The Womans Club AARP.
Howell was preceded in death by her husband Ellis Howell.
Survivors include brother and sister-in-law Royce and Hilda Burnette of Blue Ridge and sister Mrs. A.D. (Regent) Warner of Simpsonville, S.C. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held June 8 at 8 p.m. in the chapel of the Finch-Cochran Funeral Home. Honorary escorts were the members of the Epworth United Methodist Church. iIntermentfollowed in the Copper Ridge Memorial Gardens.
Finch-Cochran Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
