Viola Crowder

Survived by family, resident of Murphy
Viola Brown Crowder, 81, of Murphy, N.C., died Dec. 17, 2006, at Copper Basin Medical Center.
Mrs. Crowder was born Nov. 8, 1925, in Polk County to the late Luther and Janie Nelson Robinson. She was a charter member of the Turtletown Church of God of Prophecy.
Mrs. Crowder was operator and manager of Checkers drive-in in Turtletown for over 50 years. She also cooked at Copper Basin Medical Center.
Survivors include her husband Charles Crowder of the home; sons and daughter-in-law James Brown of Mich., and Carson Luther and Sue Brown of Douglasville, Ga.; daughters and sons-in-law Carol and the Rev. Roger Hyatt of Copperhill and Sherry and Doug Smith of Turtletown; sisters Drucilla McClure of Ellijay, Geneva Whitner of Cherry Log, Mary Helen Banks of California and Willa Deabn Brown of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Dec. 20 from the Finch-Cochran Funeral Home with Brother Gerald Mann and Brother Freddy Maney officiating. Music was by Jeff Vaughn.
iIntermentfollowed in Zion Hill Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Brad, Rodney, David and Andrew Hyatt, Jeff Vaughn and Eric Smith.
Finch-Cochran Funeral Home of McCaysville was in charge of the arrangements.

Larry Stanley

U.S. Army veteran, survived by family
James Larry Stanley, 62, of Blue Ridge died Jan. 5, 2007, in Fannin Regional Hospital.
Born in Fannin County, he was the son of the late Henry McClellan and Inez Sutton Stanley. He retired from Fannin County government where he was the tax assessor. Mr. Stanley was a member of Eastside Church of Christ and a U.S. Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife Virginia G. Stanley of Blue Ridge; daughters Michele S. Grubb and Melissa Stanley both of Epworth; brother Harold Stanley of Murphy; sisters Bernice Young of Blue Ridge and Ella Jean Stanley of Ellijay; and grandchildren McClellan Grice, Zachary Greene, and Sarah and Morgan Mullins.
Funeral services were Jan. 8 from the Akins of Blue Ridge chapel with the Rev. Terry Stuart, the Rev. Bill Johnston, the Rev. David Mullins and the Rev. Dennis Morris officiating.
iIntermentfollowed in the Stanley Church of Christ cemetery.
Pallbearers included Junior White, Terry Thrasher, Benny Messer, George Ensley, Johnny Scearce, Dennis Gravely and David Grice.
Honorary pallbearers included Pete Jones, Timmy Messer, Bobby Dills, Billy Helton, Ted Weaver, Reefer Davenport, Richard Stanley and Elmer Van Orsdale.

Luma Sweeney

Loving mother and grandmother
Luma Jane Sweeney, 85, of Bradenton, Fla., died Jan. 2, 2007, at the Greenbriar Nursing Center in Bradenton.
She was born on Sept. 9, 1921, in McVeigh, Ky., and had been a resident of Bradenton for over 10 years coming from Michigan. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. Sweeney was a very loving mother and grandmother.
Survivors include sons Paul Sweeney of Mansfield, Ohio, and Jimmy Sweeney and Willie Sweeney, both of Copperhill; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Jan. 5 from the Akins of Copperhill chapel with Sister Rudy Baliles officiating.
iIntermentfollowed in the Mount Carmel cemetery.
Pallbearers included Jason Sweeney, Christopher Osborn, Phillip Woodby, Kevin Woodby, Dewey Baliles and David Kaylor.
Memorials may be made to the TideWell Hospice and Pallaitative Care of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, Fla., 34238.

Howard January

Survived by family, resident of Blue Ridge
Howard E. January, 74, of Blue Ridge died Jan. 5, 2007, at Life Care Center of Copper Basin.
Mr. January was born July 30, 1932, in Bartow County, Ga., to the late Joseph Edward and the late Mary Louise Henson January.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Nell January.
Survivors include brother Edgar January of Atlanta and sisters Helen Lewis of Atlanta and Mary Goss of Cobb County, Ga.
Funeral services were Jan. 7 from the Henry-Cochran Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Randy Hooper and the Rev. Richard Peacock officiating.

Grace Painter

Former employee of Levi Strauss, homemaker
Grace Long Painter, 74, of Blue Ridge died Jan. 1.
Born on May 7, 1932, in Fannin County, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Senia Farmer Long. She was a former employee of Levi Strauss and a homemaker. Mrs. Painter was a member of the New Life Fellowship Church in Blue Ridge.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Ben Painter.
Survivor include sons Benny Painter of Woodstock, Ga., Robert Painter of Blue Ridge, Bro. Hal Painter of Talladega, Ala., and Herb Painter of Ellenwood, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers Frank Long of Blue Ridge and B.C. Long of Douglasville, Ga.; sisters Betty Cochran, Jane Ledford and Carrie Conley, all of Blue Ridge, Ruth Hawkins of Culberson, N.C., and Ruby Boone of McDonough, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Jan. 3 from the chapel of Bernhardt Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Bennett officiating. Music was by the Beach family and The New Harvest Church choir.

Pallbearers included Richard Painter, Jason Painter, Patrick Painter, Raymond Long, Roy Carroll, Jonathan Carroll and Jonathan Hawkins.

Steve Swafford

Avid Tennessee fan
Steve Douglas Swafford, 64, of Blue Ridge died Jan. 8 at his home.
Born on Dec. 22, 1942, in Polk County, Tenn., he was the son of the late Richard and Euna Davis Swafford. He served in the U.S. Army and was of the Baptist faith. He retired from Polk County Road Dept.
Mr. Swafford was a knife and gun collector, loved to target practice and was an avid Tennessee fan.
He was preceded in death by his brother Birch Swafford.
Survivors include his wife Diane Clore Swafford; daughters and sons-in-law Monica and Fred Watkins of Woodstock, Ga., Stephanie and Matthew Taylor; grandchildren Cory and Brennan Watkins; grandson Nicholas Taylor; stepsons Brian and Shane Mumpower, five step-grandsons; one step-granddaughter; brothers and sister-in-law Richard Swafford of Turtletown and Randy and Joyce Swafford of Cherokee Hills; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Jan. 11 from the Finch-Cochran Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Roy Clore and the Rev. Stephen Waters officiating. Music was by Amy Galloway, Tammy Kimsey, Chad Kimsey, Bob and Susie Nanny.
iIntermentfollowed in the Toccoa Baptist Church cemetery with military honors by the North Georgia Honor Guard.
Pallbearers included Theron Clore, Brian Mumpower, Shane Mumpower, Fred Watkins, Cory Watkins and Tony Galloway.
Honorary pallbearers include Dale Hopkins, Ervin Melton, Gibb Ingle, Bob Nanny, Harold Hood, Matthew Taylor, Scott Swafford and Brennan Watkins.
Finch-Cochran Funeral Home of McCaysville was in charge of the arrangements.

Raymond Parker

Survived by family, resident of Suches
Raymond Edward Parker, 78, of Suches died Jan. 8, 2007, in the Heritage Health Care Center of Blue Ridge.
Born in Fannin County, he was the son of the late Milford and Nellie Mae Frasure Parker.
He retired from Mead Packing Co. as a machine operator. Mr. Parker was of the Baptist faith and attended Coopers Creek Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ada Long Parker.
Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law Randell and Melanie Parker of Amelia Island, Fla., and children Teddy, Ashlie, and Haley; niece, Linda Pickelsimer of Suches; great-nephew, Terry Pickelsimer, wife Tammy and children Jordan and Savannah; great-nephew Mitchell Pickelsimer, wife Tina and children Andy and Amanda; great-niece Connie Davis, husband Tim and daughter Kelly; and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Jan. 11 from the Akins of Blue Ridge chapel with the Rev. Paul Carder officiating.
Music was by Beverly Thompson.
iIntermentfollowed in Coopers Creek cemetery.
Pallbearers were Teddy Parker, Mitchell Pickelsimer, Tim Davis, Jordan Pickelsimer, Timmy Cruce and Tony Cruce.
Honorary pallbearers were Roy Frasure, Barry Frasure and Charles Duvall.

Danny Ballew

Survived by family, resident of Lithia Springs
Danny Ballew, 60, of Lithia Springs, Ga., died Dec. 31, 2006, at Wellstar Cobb Hospital.
Born Aug. 24, 1946, in Mineral Bluff, he was the son of Etta Hyatt Ballew and the late Andrew Reid Ballew. He attended Bethel Baptist Church in Douglasville. Mr. Ballew retired as a television technician from Richey Television.
He was preceded in death by his brother Maxie Ballew.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Linda Daniel Ballew of Lithia Springs; son and daughter-in-law Danny Wayne and Judy Ballew of Lithia Springs; granddaughters Brittany Lee Ballew and Sarah Brooke Ballew; grandson Danny Wayne Ballew; his mother Etta Hyatt Ballew of Mineral Bluff; sisters Juanita Hardigree of Smyrna, Ga., Pat Brown of Marietta Ga., Carol Seymour and Evelyn Gibbs both of Mineral Bluff; brother R.J. Ballew of Mineral Bluff; mother-in-law Essie Daniel; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Jan. 3 from the Douglas chapel of Jones-Wynn Funeral Home with the Rev. Alton Williams and the Rev. Joel Alexander officiating.
iIntermentfollowed in Moz-ley Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers included Bernard McVey, Justin McVey, Charlie Daniel, Allyn Daniel, David Terrell and Allen Stewart.
