Sylvia Wiladean ‘Dean’ Houston Deal

Sylvia Wiladean “Dean” Houston Deal, 65, of Blackshear, passed away Tuesday morning, March 7, 2006, at the Specialty Hospital in Jacksonville, FL.
A native and life-long resident of Pierce County, she had worked for Bamboo Shoes, Blackshear Apparel and JLJ Jacket Factory but had also been a housewife. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church but had also attended the Gates of Joy Church. She was a daughter of the late Willie Houston.
Survivors include her husband, Wilman Deal, Blackshear; a son and daughter-in-law, Curtis and Sherrie Deal, Blackshear; her mother, Joyce Joyner Houston, Blackshear; a sister and brother-in-law, Vonseil and William Johnson, Blackshear; four grandchildren, Heather Deal, Amber Deal, Scotty Deal and Curt Deal and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 9, from the Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Carolyn Virginia Davis Dixon

Carolyn Virginia Davis Dixon, 57, of Blackshear, passed away Wednesday morning, March 8, 2006, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center following a long illness that required her to be on dialysis for the last six years.
A native and life-long resident of Pierce County, she was a housewife and was also a member of the New Life Assembly of God. She was the daughter of the late Cuyler Sr. and Clara Virginia Tuten Davis and was also preceded in death by her husband, Ray Smith Dixon, who passed away on October 20, 2005 and her brother, Cuyler S. “Punk” Davis, Jr. She will be remembered as being a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Survivors are her daughter, Vanessa Lee, fiancé, James Cothern, Blackshear; three grandchildren, Tyler Lee, Brett Lee and Mia Lee, all of Blackshear; a special aunt, Sis Young, Blackshear; a special niece, Denise Boatright, Blackshear; her first cousin, Cindy Dowling, Blackshear; four sisters-in-law, Wanda and Jimmy Byrd, Nancy and John McIntosh, Karen and Keith Hayes and Debbie and Mike Crosby, all of Blackshear; five brothers-in-law, Travis and Bertie Dixon, Jerry Dixon, Ronnie and Anne Dixon, Wayne and Cheryl Dixon and Ted and Krystal Dixon, all of Blackshear and several other nieces, nephews and relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 10, from the Pearson-Treadwell Funeral Home.

Gwendolyn Elizabeth Crews Moore

Gwendolyn Elizabeth Crews Moore, 56, of Nahunta, died early Thursday morning at her residence in Nahunta after a long illness.
Born in Brantley County, she was the daughter of Sim and Irene Elizabeth Crews. “Cookie, ” as she was known by her friends and family, worked as a cashier for Jiffy Convenient Stores before her illness, and was a member of the Atkinson Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband Rufus “R.G.” Grady Moore, by her two brothers, Sport Crews and Everett Crews and by two sisters, Stella Ellis and Evelyn Tucker.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Luke Moore, Bristol; threegrandchildren, Joshua Ray Herrin, Haley Elizabeth Moore and Lucas Troy Moore; two step-sons and daughter-in-law, J.J. and Kathy Moore, and Tony Moore, all of Estill, SC; two step-daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Bud Rowe, Savannah and Pat and Greg Jones, LaMoore, CA; 10 step-grandchildren, Amber Senn, Emily Senn, Ashley Moore, Austin Moore, Cheyenne Moore, Lariat Moore, Kentia Raines, James Ranies, Jack Henry Rowe and Charles Adam Jones; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Neal and Vivian Crews, Hoboken, Dewitt and Sandy Crews, Polk City, FL, Eddie Crews, Nahunta, and Joe T. and Evelyn Crews, Hoboken; one sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Raymond, Nahunta and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 11 from the Hoboken Baptist Church with the Rev. Claud Goble and the Rev. Tim Rowell officiating.
Burial followed in the family plot at Hoboken City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Joshua Herrin, Matt Day, Ryan Day, Richard Crews, Jason Mixon, Calvin Ellis and Adam Carter.
Chambless-Frye Funeral Home of Nahunta was in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Larry Boyett

Joseph Larry Boyett, 64, of Patterson, passed away Wednesday morning, March 8, 2006, at his daughter’s residence in Columbia, SC, following a lengthy illness.
Born in Wayne County, he spent most of his life in Patterson on the family farm. He was a carpenter and most enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, family, friends, and taking his grandchildren fishing. On March 3, 2005, Larry accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior, becoming a member of the family of God for all eternity. We, the family, are very thankful and praise God what He has done for our loved one.
He was a son of the late James Franklin “Mr. Jim” and Reba Vida Barnard “Mrs. Raby” Boyett and was also preceded in death by a son, David Larry Boyett; a sister, Ida May Cook and three brothers, Coye E. Boyett, James E. Boyett and George D. Boyett.
Survivors are three daughters, Jeanie (husband Don) Jones, Columbia, DeeAnna Michaels, Patterson and HuiYon (husband Randy) Gill, Offerman; two sisters, Patricia (husband Wendell) McCollumn and Virginia (husband Donald) Cason, all of Patterson; two brothers, Franklin “Sonny” (wife Shirley) Boyett, Jesup and Danny Ray (wife Diane) Boyett, Blackshear; eight grandchildren, Jeremy R. Boyett, Marty Michaels, David Michaels, J. D. Boyett, Larry Boyett, Vivian Boyett, Zac Jones and Faith Jones and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 11, from Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Julia Belle Wildes Dowling

Julia Belle Wildes Dowling, 91, died Thursday morning, March 9, 2006, at Shands Hospital in Jacksonville, FL after a brief illness.
She was a native of Charlton County, but had lived several years in Pierce and Brantley Counties before moving to Callahan, FL In 1983.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Lester Dowling and her parents, Henry Preston Wildes and Martha McKenzy Clark Wildes.
She was a homemaker.
She was an active member of Buford Grove Baptist Church where she was a member of the Adult 2 Sunday School Class. She was also the team mother for the church bowling league.
Survivors include her four daughters, Latriece Osteen (husband Roy), Blackshear, Patricia Elledge, Atlanta, Bonnie Hull (husband K.D.), Atlanta, Judy Ramsey (husband Gary), Eddyville, KY; a son, Buddy Dowling (wife Libby) Callahan, FL; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Mixon (husband Cecil), Waycross, and a brother-in-law, Robert Bowen, Blackshear; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 14, from the Buford Grove Baptist Church in Hilliard FL.
Burial followed in the Twin Rivers Baptist Church cemetery in Brantley County.
Smith Funeral Home of Blackshear was in charge of the arrangements.

Charles Edward Raulerson

Charles Edward Raulerson, 54, of Blackshear died suddenly Friday morning, March 10, 2006, from injuries sustained in a log truck accident in Blackshear.
He was a native of Bacon County, but had lived all of his life in Pierce County.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ira Daniel Raulerson. He was employed as a truck driver with Shon Thornton Logging, Inc.
Survivors include two sons, Chase Rowe, Statesboro and Cody Raulerson, Blackshear; his mother, Thoetis Raulerson Batten, Patterson; a sister, Linda Shaw (husband Arthur), Waycross; three brothers, Billy Raulerson (wife Mary), Waycross, Dan Raulerson, Waycross, and James Raulerson, Lake City, FL, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Graveside funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday from the Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Smith Funeral Home of Blackshear was in charge of the arrangements.

Lucille Roundtree Dixon Tippins

Lucille Roundtree Dixon Tippins, 77, of Blackshear, passed away Friday, March 10, 2006, at her residence, following a short fight with cancer, surrounded by her loving and caring family.
A native of Pierce County, she had lived in Offerman since 1959. She was a retired seamstress and a member of the Offerman Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Hubert Roundtree and Cassie Bowman Roundtree. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Claude Dixon, second husband, Ira Cason and third husband, William Charles Tippins, one son, Mitchell Kenneth “Mickey” Dixon, two brothers, Kenneth Roundtree and Harold Roundtree and a sister, Faye Harris.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law: Susan and David McQuaig, Waycross and Barbara and Timmy Morgan, Offerman; a son and daughter-in-law: Steve and Carol Dixon, Broxton; five sisters and brothers-in-law; Nada and Oscar Harris, Patterson, Wynell Green, Waycross, Vera and Doc Braddock, Brunswick, Evon and Marshall Dixon, Offerman and Kathryn and Claude Hickox, Blackshear; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Gilbert and Tamma Lee Rountree, Patterson, Junior and Frances Roundtree, Blackshear and Felton and Bobbie Nell Roundtree, Homerville; 10 grandchildren, sixgreat-grandchildren and several other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 13, from the Offerman Baptist Church. iIntermentfollowed in the Enon Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Jerry Grimes

Jerry Lamar Grimes, 62, died early Tuesday morning, February 7, 2006, at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, FL after an extended illness.
He was a native of Chattooga County, but had lived most of his life in Ware and Pierce Counties before moving to Ashburn in 1999 and then retiring to Astor, FL in 2004.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell Lamar Grimes and Virginia Veach Grimes and a step-son, Jason Thomas.
He retired in 2004 as city manager for the City of Ashburn. Before moving to Ashburn, he worked for the City of Waycross from 1978 until retiring in 1999. He had worked in many positions starting as purchasing agent to city clerk and the retiring as the city finance director.
He was a member of the Georgia Municipal Association, Astor Moose Lodge and many other city and county organizations. He was an avid fisherman and loved the outdoors. He was also a BBQ judge and had judged many times at the Pig Jig in Vienna.
He was of the Baptist Faith and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include his wife Ann Grimes, Blackshear; a son David Grimes, Lafayette; a daughter, Laura Brown (husband Duane) Lafayette; a step-son, Ashley Thomas (wife Andrea), Blackshear; a step-daughter, Brandi Howell (husband Joe) Blackshear; nine grandchildren; three sisters, Sue Wesson (husband James), Judy Smith (husband Gary), all of Trion and Carolyn Hill (husband Ronald), Menlo; two brothers, Jimmy Grimes, Atlanta, and Tommy Grimes (wife Mary) Summerville, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday from the chapel of Smith Funeral Home.

Past and present city employees served as honorary pallbearers.

The Rev. John L. ‘Dunk’ Griner

John L. ‘Dunk’ Griner, M.Div., 54, of Midway died Tuesday, February 7, 2006 at Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville.
Pastor Griner was born November 23, 1951 in Pierce County to the late John Joseph and Grace Dixon Griner. He was a 1969 graduate of Patterson High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served 13 years before being retired on a medical discharge in August of 1987. He attended college and received associate degrees in pastoral studies and religious education and a bachelor’s degree in religious studies with a minor in psychology. In 1992, he received a master of divinity degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He served as a missionary in West Virginia and in New Orleans. He was both a pastor and an evangelist over the years. His last pastorate was at Wilder Memorial Baptist Church in Savannah for 6 1/2 years. He was currently the owner of Griner and Associates in Midway. He was a member of Fleming Baptist Church.
Survivors include his spouse of almost 28 years, Kathy Clark Griner; daughters and sons-in-law, Katrina Griner Nibblett and Garrett and Melissa Griner Lovett and Brent; brothers and sisters-in-law, David E. and Jean Griner, Blackshear and Jerome and Marbie Griner, Patterson and Joseph N. (Pat) and Helga Griner, Eatonton; sisters and brother-in-law, Gracie and Bob Lee and Peggy Duvall, all of Blackshear; mother and father-in-law, John and Gladys Clark; grandchildren, Ethan, Kaleb and Hannah Nibblett and Krysta Lovett and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, from the Fleming Baptist Church with the Rev. Major Dykes and the Rev. Charlie Pharis officiating.
iIntermentfollowed in the Dorchester Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Randy Butler, Kelpsie Lott, Joe Morris Jr., DeWayne Griffin, Andy Arrington, Rick Bledsoe, Walter Horne and Harry Moore Jr.
Honorary pallbearers were James Weeks and Tina Morris.
Remembrances may be made to Fleming Baptist Church Youth or Building Fund, 3526 North Coastal Highway, Highway 17, Fleming, Georgia 31309.
