Bonnie Holbrook Smith

Mrs. Bonnie Holbrook Smith, age 83 of Canton, passed away Tuesday, October 23, 2007 at Peachtree Christian Hospice following a period of declining health and a brief illness.

The widow of Elmer Smith, she was a loving mother and grandmother, a devoted friend, and a committed follower of Christ. She served God faithfully throughout her life, both as an active member of New Harmony Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and participated in the Women's Missionary Union, and as a long-time tent holder at Holbrook Campground. In more recent years, she enjoyed quilting, writing weekly letters to her grandchildren away at college, and spending time with her sisters and Alice Mae Hicks, a close friend and neighbor.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Vickie and Tommy Samples of Cumming; grandchildren, Chase Samples and his wife Melanie of Athens and Trent Samples of Cumming; sister and brother-in-law, Izelle and Elbert Cochran of Canton, sister Betty Ann Boling of Cumming, and sister and brother-in-law Bobbie and Ted Echols of Cumming; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 25, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at New Harmony Baptist Church with Rev. Johnny Purcell and Rev. Larry Waddell officiating. iIntermentwill follow at New Harmony Baptist Church cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 24, 2007, from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Ingram Funeral Home & Crematory, Cumming, Georgia will be in charge of arrangements.

Charlotte A. Gossett age 80 of Cumming formerly of Fairburn, Georgia passed away Wednesday October 17, 2007...

Charlotte A. Gossett age 80 of Cumming formerly of Fairburn, Georgia passed away Wednesday October 17, 2007. Mrs. Gossett was a member of First Redeemer Church and First Baptist Church Fairburn. She and her husband Archie lived in Fairburn for 26 years and were married for 55 years before his death in 2000.

Funeral services will be 1 PM Saturday October 20th at First Redeemer Church with Rev. Chris Holdrof officiating.

The family will receive friends on Friday October 19th from 6 PM until 9 PM at Byars Funeral Home. iIntermentwill be in Holly Hill Memorial Park in Fairburn.

Cheryl Ann Williams

Cheryl Ann Williams, 44, of Dawsonville died Saturday April 5, 2008 at her residence.

A native of Atlanta, she had lived in Dawson County since 2002 having moved from Cumming. She was employed by Michaels in Cumming and was preceded in death by a sister, Tonya Kitchens.

Surviving are her children, Jessica Lynn Russell, Stockbridge, Emily Russell Bern and Eliot Bern, Gainesville, Sterlin Wayne Frady, Dawsonville; parents, Barbara and Thomas Bang, Dawsonville; sister, Melanie Young, Columbus; grandson, Jacob Edmond Bern.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday April 9, 2008 at 12 noon at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. Elder James Heard will officiate. iIntermentwill follow in the Coal Mountain Cemetery.

The family will receive friends after 5:30 pm Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Franklin D. Martin, age 76 a native and life-long resident of Forsyth County, passed away October 14, 2007. Mr. Martin was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and was also a Veteran of the United States Army serving in the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his wife Ida Mae Martin.

Survivors include his children, Lee Roy Martin, Darryl Martin, Angela Ivey, Mary Cogliano and Larry Tallant; thirteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother L. T. Martin; sisters Inez Bottoms, Sara Sewell, Mary Myers and Jane Smith. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at 2:00 pm at Ingram Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lee Gaddis officiating. iIntermentwill follow in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Ingram Funeral Home on Tuesday, 5:00 - 8:00 pm and on Wednesday, 12:00 noon until 2:00 pm.

Frances Estelle Hughes Anglin, an avid supporter of the Dawson County Fall Festival and devoted mother, passed away April 7 at her home with her children by her side. She was 83...

Frances Estelle Hughes Anglin, an avid supporter of the Dawson County Fall Festival and devoted mother, passed away April 7 at her home with her children by her side. She was 83.

One of eight children, Mrs. Hughes Anglin was born December 25, 1924 in Lumpkin County, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Samatha Jones. Her bothers included Roy Jones; Poole Jones; Jimmy Jones; Millard Jones; Dawson County, Charlie Jones of Forsyth County and her sisters were Iva Rider of Lumpkin County and Ethel Staton of Dawson County, all deceased.

She is preceeded in death by her first husband James C. Hughes, who was a member of the Georgia House of Representives, and the father of her five children.

Mrs. Hughes Anglin is also preceeded in death by her second husband, Leland Anglin, a World War II Veteran of Forsyth County.

She is preceeded in death by a son, Jay Hughes of Dawson County.

For many years, Mrs. Hughes Anglin participated in Dawson County's Fall Festival and was a promoter of its success. She also was a nature-lover, who enjoyed maintaining her farm in the southern section of Dawson County.

Her favorite hobby was the selection, design and creation of numerous quilt patterns. Her artwork was known throughout the nation and Canada. Her special patterns were entitled The Little School House, Step-Around-The Mountain, The Star and her famous Double Wedding Ring which was a wedding gift to one of the Oak Ridge Boys.

She is survived by three daughters and a son: Jan Hamilton, Dawson County, Dawson Co. 4th District Commissioner Julie Nix, Gene Hughes, Dawson County and Cheryl and Tod Cole, Simi Valley, California.

She is survived by four grandchildren: Wyatt Anthony and Tonya Nix of Forsyth County; Vincent John Hamilton, New York, New York; Ryan Lamar and Cara Nix of Deming, New Mexico and Ciera Cherilyn Elizabeth Cole, Simi Valley, California.

Mrs. Hughes Anglin is also survived by one great granddaughter, Miss Mya Ansleigh Nix, age 3.

Bearden Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements with a memorial service at Harmony Baptist Church with interment at Sawnee View Memorial Gardens last Thursday, April 10.

The family respectfully request in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to St. Joseph's Mercy Foundation, Atlanta, Georgia and Atlanta Two Day Cancer Walk.

Matthew Britten Phillips

United States Army Corporal Matthew Britten Phillips, age 27, of Cumming, GA, died Sunday, July 13, 2008 while bravely and proudly serving his country at a forward operating base in eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar province. Cpl. Phillips was one of nine soldiers to die that day; just days before his unit was scheduled to leave the base.

"We feel angry, even bitterly so, because our young men lived better lives, had higher hopes and more perfect love, than their attackers, " Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Stevan Horning said during a memorial service held in Vicenza, Italy. "Please help us to not become weary of doing what is good; renew our courage so we complete the mission you assign each of us."

Corporal Phillips was a member of the U. S. Army’s 2nd Platoon, "Chosen Company", 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, serving for the past 2 ½ years during which time he was deployed to Afghanistan for 14 months. While in the U.S. Army, Phillips was the recipient of the Bronze Star medal with one bronze oak leaf. He also had received the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Army Achievement Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze Star, the GWOT (Global War on Terror) Medal, the Army Service Medal, the Army Overseas Ribbon and the NATO Medal.

Born April 13, 1981 in Florence, AL, Matt is preceded in death by his mother, Freida Lynn Phillips.

Survivors include his wife, Eve Lamb Phillips; father and step-mother, Michael Britten and Ellen Phillips; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Phillips and Perry S. Nix of San Antonio, TX; grandparents, William Britten and Betty Jean Phillips, Fred Lee and Barbara Ann Cochran, all of Altoona, AL; a nephew, Matthew Andrew Nix; step-brothers, Spc. Dan Click and Spc.. Michael Click. Numerous aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 26, at 1:00 p.m. at Coal Mountain Baptist Church. iIntermentwill follow at Coal Mountain cemetery with full military honors.

Johnny Redd, local resident, is calling for a memorial show of support by asking people to line the sides of the road along Dalonega Hwy from Ingrams Funeral Home to Coal Mountain Baptist Church to pay respect and show honor to a true hero. Please join the memorial line before 12:30. The family will be arriving at the church at 12:40.

The family will receive friends Friday from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. at Ingram Funeral Home.

Elaine Tallant

Mrs. Elaine Tallant, age 70, of Cumming, GA passed away Monday, August 27, 2007. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alford Tallant. Elaine was a member of Friendship Baptist church and spent many years serving the Forsyth County School System.

Survivors include children, Sharon Barnett of Birmingham, AL, Gary and Ariane Tallant of Cumming, Don and Deborah Tallant of Cumming, and Lisa and Shannon Elzey of Cumming; grandchildren, Joshua, Justin, Jarrett, Jayne, and Randy Tallant, Heather Wilson, Hunter Elzey, Brian and Jeremy Cruz; great grandchild, Gracie Tallant; brothers, Calvin Ball of Canton and Carroll Ball of Phoenix, AZ; sisters, Laverne Adkerson of Canton, Martha Lindsey of Dawsonville, and Hazel and Ken Thames of Sarasota, FL. Several nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, August 30, 2007 at 2:00p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church with Rev. Bud Sutton, Rev. Ronnie McCormick and Rev. Lee Gaddis officiating. iIntermentwill follow at the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 28, 2007 from 4:00p.m. until 9:00p.m. and Wednesday, August 29, 2007 from 4:00p.m. until 9:00p.m.

Mr. Edmond U. Bennett, age 89 of Gainesville, passed away September 24, 2007. He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene Westray Bennett; father and mother, Judge and Tomie Bennett; and brother, Ernest Bennett. He was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Dianne Bennett of Gainesville; daughter and son-in-law, Juanita and Maurice Garrett of Gainesville; grandchildren, Scott and Darlene Bennett of Gainesville, Wesley and LeeAnn Bennett of Hixson, TN, Michael and Theresea Bennett of Gainesville, Sharon and Russell Eagle of Flowery Branch, and Wanda and Michael Pethel of Flowery Branch; great grandchildren, Crystal Elsarelli, Erica Mayabb, Jessica Bennett, Joshua Bennett, Logan Pethel, Lyndsey Pethel; three great great grandchildren; nephew, Ronald Bennett; and niece, Ann Lynn.

Mr. Ed Glover, age 42 of Dawsonville, passed away suddenly Tuesday, August 14, 2007. He attended Mountain Lake Church.

Survivors include sons Chase, Corbin and Collin Glover, all of Cumming; father Jack Glover of Dawsonville; mother Charlene Collins of Cumming; brothers and sisters-in-law Marcus Glover of Canton, Shannon and Roxanne Glover of Cumming, Mitch and Laurie Bowman of Dawsonville, Stacey Bowman of Cumming; sisters and brothers-in-law Denese and Donnie Williams of Canton, Vonda and Scott Hull of Stockbridge. Special friends Carol Vincent of Cumming and Cori Hand of Lilburn, and a number of other relatives, also survive.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 18, 2007, at 11:00 am at Mountain Lake Church with Rev. David Putman officiating. The family will receive friends at Ingram Funeral Home on Thursday from 6:00 until 9:00 pm and Friday from 9:00 am until 9:00 pm.

Winberg & wife Nancy; Sisters, Ruth McArdle & Marjorie Hale; 6 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

He was a kind and gentle man loved by all who knew him.

Clayton “Shorty” Rider, 61, of Dahlonega died Saturday March 29, 2008 at his residence following a period of declining health.

Born in Dawson County, he lived most of his life in Lumpkin County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Ester Rider, three sisters and three brothers.

Surviving are his sisters, Irene Dale, Atlanta, Reba Rider, Dahlonega; brother, Lowery Rider, Dahlonega; sister in law, Kathleen Norrell, Dahlonega, and a number of other relatives.

Graveside services were held Tuesday April 1, 2008 at 2 o’clock at the Auraria Church of Almighty God cemetery. Rev. Tommy Davis officiating.
