Samuel E. (Buddy) Holland
Services for Samuel E. (Buddy) Holland of Lumber City were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7 at the chapel of Lowe’s Funeral Home in Helena with interment in the Telfair Memorial Gardens.
The Rev. James Wilcox, the Rev. Steve Frazier and the Rev. Niles Dixon officiated.
Holland, 82, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006 at Telfair Regional Hospital in McRae. He was the son of the late Robert and Nellie Rose Staple Holland of Dodge County and was married to Inez Holland.
A lifetime resident of Telfair County, he was a member, Chairman and Charter Deacon of Mt. Galilee Baptist Church, member of the Jacksonville Lions Club, a farmer and World War II Veteran.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, Bill Holland of McRae, Sam Holland and Donald Holland, both of Lumber City and Kenneth Holland of Clayton, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Willie Lou Reaves of McRae, Nannie Rose Ertzberger of Jacksonville, Anna Yancey of LaGrange and Robbie Crapps of Macon.
Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
Lowe’s Funeral Home of Helena was in charge of arrangements.

Paul D. Powell
Services for Paul D. Powell of Lumber City were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5 at Shelton’s Chapel Church in Lumber City with interment in the Dodge Chapel Cemetery in Telfair County.
The Rev. Stan Ballew and the Rev. Marion Smith officiated.
Powell, 93, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006 at Telfair Regional Hospital in McRae. He was the son of the late Alva Floyd Powell and Emma Moye Powell.
A life-long resident of Telfair County, he was a member of Shelton’s Chapel Church, a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, and was a farmer.
Survivors include his sisters, Mrs. S.L. Powell of Hazlehurst, Tempie Voyle and Hulda Mae Lee, both of Macon and Margie Martin of Alamo; and several nieces and nephews.
Active pallbearers were Morgan Cook, Howard Powell, Jessie Stevens, Nickey Powell, Van Padgett and Dub Padgett. Honorary pallbearers were Travis Cook, Malcolm Powell, Ernest Lee, Chester Powell, Randy Cameron, Richard Cameron, Benny Calhoun, and the men of Shelton’s Chapel Church. Music was rendered by Teresa Damerans and Lilla Mae Allen.
Wainwright-Parlor Funeral Home of Hazlehurst was in charge of arrangements.

Janet Lynn ‘Ruby’ Schwartz
A memorial service for Janet Lynn “Ruby” Schwartz will be held at a later date in Michigan.
Schwartz, 43, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006 in Savannah. She was the daughter of Charles Edward Purvis and Linda Louise Purvis of Richmond Hill and was married to Paul Schwartz.
Schwartz was born in McRae and resided there until moving to Smyrna, Tenn. in 1976, ultimately calling South Boardman, Mich. home since 1988. “Ruby” worked for several years at Sara Lee Bakery in the sanitation department, and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her husband of nine years and her parents, survivors include her children, Linda Danielle White of Smyrna, Tenn., Joshua Rhan Purvis of Gainesville, Fla., and Brittany Lynn Capps of Michigan; sisters, Pamela Denise Cousino of Tennessee and Lori Elayne Mattingly of Hinesville; and two grandchildren.
Contributions may be made to the American Liver Foundation, 75 Maiden Lane, Suite 603, New York, N.Y. 10038.
Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home of Savannah was in charge of arrangements.

Marty Wayne Staley
Services for Marty Wayne Staley of Scotland were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 9 in the chapel at Lowe’s Funeral Home of Helena with interment in the Scotland Cemetery.
The Rev. Ray Harris officiated.
Staley, 28, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2006. He was the son of Deborah Brown Johnson and step-father, Mitch Johnson of Scotland.
A native of Telfair County, he was a member of Scotland Baptist Church and worked at Harvey’s Supermarket of McRae in the meat department.
In addition to his mother and step-father, survivors include his children, Megan and Gabriel Staley of Alamo; and grandmother, Inez Ashley of Scotland.
Lowe’s Funeral Home of Helena was in charge of arrangements.

Cecil Edward Williams
Services for Cecil Edward Williams of Glenwood were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6 at Lumber City Church of God with interment in Edge Memorial Cemetery in Glenwood.
The Rev. David Deen, the Rev. Cole Deen and the Rev. Chuck Morgan officiated.
Williams, 57, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006. He was the son of Florine Williams of Cadwell and Bertis Williams of Eastman and was married to Louise Williams of Glenwood.
Williams was a driver for WB Trucking and a member of the Lumber City Church of God.
In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include his two children, Amy (Tim) Towns of McRae and John Ed Williams of Glenwood; two grandsons, Jordy Towns and Laney Towns of McRae; father-in-law, John Roberson of Glenwood; two brothers, James Lee (Debbie) Williams of Dublin and Terrell Williams of Cadwell; brother-in-law, Mike Roberson of Glenwood; two sisters, Charlene Williams of Vidalia and Linda (Wilbur) Thompson of Cadwell; and several nieces and nephews.

Eva Mae Walker Yawn
Services for Eva Mae Walker Yawn of Milan were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with interment in the Milan City Cemetery.
The Rev. Connie Walker and the Rev. John O’Connor officiated.
Yawn, 78, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2006 at Coliseum Medical Center in Macon. She was the daughter of the late Robert Walker and Carrie Cadwell Walker and was the widow of Artis Yawn of Milan.
A native of Telfair County, she was a retired Registered Nurse and a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her children, Sheila (Wayne) Clements of and Allen Yawn, both of Chauncey; grandchildren, Frank Clements, Jason Clements, Matt Yawn, Justin Yawn and Garrett Yawn; five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Lowe’s Funeral Home of Helena was in charge of arrangements.

Omie Doris Mims Johns
Services for Omie Doris Mims Johns of Jacksonville, Fla. were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30 in the chapel of Lowe’s Funeral Home of Helena with interment in the Helena Cemetery.
The Rev. Gordon Dukes Jr. officiated.
Johns, 75, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006 at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, Fla. She was the daughter of the late Francis Duncan and Vera Jane Neal Mims of Telfair County, and was the widow of Dennis Leroy Johns.
She is survived by daughters, Geraldine (David) Bowers, Edna (Bill) Harris, Irene (Larry) McGough, Martha Ann (widow of Willard) Kimbrel; son, Enoch Leroy Johns, all of Jacksonville, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Sonia, Sammy, Christine, Frank, Larry Mac, Kari, and Cassie; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Jimmy Mims and Duncan D. Mims; and sister, Inez Johns of McRae
Lowe’s Funeral Home of Helena was in charge of arrangements.

Harry Richard Swartz Sr.
Graveside services for Harry Richard Swartz Sr. of McRae were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27 at Zion Hope Baptist Church cemetery.
The Rev. Mike Pollard officiated.
Swartz, 76, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2006 at Telfair Regional Hospital in McRae. He was the son of the late Bert Wellington and Faletha Pearl Kircher Swartz of New York and was married to Plina Stevens Swartz.
He had served the Army and retired from Volusia County Sign Shop in Florida, and had lived in Telfair County for many years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, Ben Rosenberg of Jacksonville, Fla., Pamela Nicols of New Smryna Beach, Fla., Harry Swartz Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., and Steven Swartz of Helena; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Olivia Carrano of Connecticut, and Viola Warren of Pennsylvania; and brother, Francis Swartz of Florida.
Lowe’s Funeral Home of Helena was in charge of arrangements.

Theida Grace Dowling Altman
Services for Theida Grace Dowling Altman of McRae were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 21 at McRae United Methodist Church with interment in Telfair Memorial Gardens.
Altman, 80, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006. She was the daughter of the late Claud and Fannie Woodard Dowling and the widow of Dr. Aubrey Joseph Altman. She was preceded in death by daughter, Claudia Altman Smith and brothers, Harry Dowling, Dodge Dowling, Paige Dowling and grandmother, Vannie Dowling.
A native of Hoboken, she had lived in McRae for many years. She was a member of McRae United Methodist Church and was a homemaker. A member of Eastern Star, she had served as Past Worthy Matron.
Survivors include her son, David Altman, his wife, Yvonne, and their son, Joseph Altman, all of Helena; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
