PELHAM — Martha Hines, 56, of 4020 New Hope Rd., Pelham, died Sunday, February 5, 2006 at Archbold Memorial Hospital. Funeral arrangements to be announced.

COLQUITT — Alice Wells, 86, of Colquitt, died Saturday, February 4, 2006 at Miller County Hospital.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sheffield Funeral Chapel, with burial to follow in Whites Bridge Cemetery. The Revs. Harold Burrell and Joe Romigh officiating.

Born on July 30, 1919 in Decatur County, Mrs. Wells was a homemaker and a member of Colquitt First Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters and two sons-in-law, Rennie Faye Bevis and Terry, and Maxine Summers and Kelley, both of Colquitt: two sons and a daughter-in-law, John Edward Wells and Marvin Wells Jr. and Suzanne, both of Colquitt; a sister, Hazel Wilkinson of Bainbridge; nine grandchildren, Al Summers, Suzanne Mears, Jeffery Bevis, Cissy Eldridge, Heather Smith, Chris Wells, Anna Jackson, Dana Nunnery and Leslie Brackin; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Wells was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Wells.

Pallbearers are Al Summers, Timmy Mears, Jeffery Bevis, Bob Eldridge, Mitch Smith, Chuck Jackson, Jeff Nunnery, Chris Wells and Chad Brackin.

Visitation will be held today (Monday) from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

ALBANY — Mary Della Sheffield, 83, of Albany, died Saturday, March 11, 2006 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital following an illness.

Her funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2006 at Mercedes Baptist Church and the interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. The Rev. Russell Anglin will officiate.

Mrs. Sheffield a native of Blakely had lived in Albany since 1959. She was a long time, and faithful member of Mercedes Baptist Church. She loved her friends and family and loved her fellowship with them. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Leona Houston Batchelor, first husband, George Chestnut and Floyd Sheffield,; three sisters, Vernice BatchelorHay, Gola Batchelor Elliott and Lillian Batchelor Blackburn.

Survivors include two sons, Ellis Chestnut and his wife Bonnie of Leesburg, and Larry Chestnut and his wife Kathy of Albany; seven grandchildren, Robin Sturm, Pam Hammock, Troy Chestnut, Chris Chestnut, Kristy Chestnut, Dyan Chestnut and Carolyn Berry; six great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Mildred Batchelor Norris, Nell Batchelor Stegall, Jeanette Batchelor Goolsby and Bobbie Batchelor Parker.

ALBANY — Betty Pilcher Spence, 75 of Albany died Sunday, March 12, 2006 at Evergreen Assisted Living in Albany.

Her funeral service will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, March 15, 2006, at Christ United Methodist Church. The Reverends Bob Moon and Kent Miller will officiate.

Betty was born March 21, 1930 in Albany, and she moved with her family to Atlanta at an early age. Betty attended Girls High School of Atlanta and graduated from Brown High School, also in Atlanta. She graduated from the Emory University School of Nursing in 1948. She pursued her nursing career at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta and at St. Mary's and Athens General Hospitals both in Athens. After the family moved to Albany in 1960, she nursed at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital and was an instructor for the practical nursing class at the Albany Vocational School. Betty was deeply involved in the fight against drug abuse by young people in the Albany area, where she founded the CODAC program and she chaired the Georgia Council against Drug Abuse during the administrations of Governors Carter and Busbee. Betty also ran a small catering business, which she called her third and last career. She was a very active member of Christ United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, C. Norman Spence, two daughters, Leigh Ann Spence, Sandra Jean Breedlove and her husband Kenneth, two grandchildren, Brandon and Haley Breedlove, sister Phoebe Bolton of Conyers and several nieces and nephews.

Betty's family will receive friends Tuesday, 5:30 to 7 PM at Kimbrell-Stern.

Caroline W. Tharpe

ALBANY — Caroline W. Tharpe, age 90, entered heaven's fate Saturday, March 11, 2006, at her residence, 1721 Beattie Road 143. Born in Geneva County, AL, Mrs. Tharpe resided in Panama City for over sixty years. She was a homemaker, an excellent seamstress, an avid gardener, and foremost a devoted mother to her six children. She instilled in her children a love of working with their hands, whether it be cooking Sunday dinner, sewing a new outfit, or working in the flower garden. Our family is comforted by the memories of spending February 18th and 19th celebrating her 90th birthday with her. A charter member of Springfield Baptist Church, she taught in the primary department for over thirty years. In Albany, GA, she was a member of Gillionville Baptist Church. Mrs. Tharpe was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, Johnny Marion Tharpe, Sen. and a grandson, Frazier Leigh Bacon.

Survivors include five daughters and one son: Betty Sue Cummins of Leesburg, FL, Mary Kathryn Dannelly (William MacArthur) of Lady Lake, FL, Melba Judith Bacon (George Lewis Jr.) of Trussville, AL, Annie Charles Thorpe (Charles Audley) of Huntsville, AL, Evelyn Elaine Gutch of Winter Springs, FL, Johnny Marion Tharpe Jr. (HenriEtta Pettis); a sister, Doris Thompson of Bonifay, FL; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 PM CST on Wednesday, March 15, 2006, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home. iIntermentwill follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery, both in Panama City, FL. The Rev. Jerry Everage of Springfield Baptist Church will officiate. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at 2 PM CST prior to the funeral.
