Eugene H. Wyles

SYLVESTER — Eugene H. Wyles, 72, passed away in his sleep Wednesday morning, January 31, 2007, in his home in Sylvester.

His wife, Gail would like for his friends to know about the arrangements celebrating his life.

Viewing times with the family will be Friday, February 2, 2007, at Pinson Memorial United Methodist Church in Sylvester from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be Saturday, February 3, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Pinson Methodist Church in Sylvester with interment in Hillcrest cemetery with Dr. Dan Williamson officiating.

Eugene was born in Palatka, FL, raised in Jacksonville, FL, and graduated from Andrew Jackson High School Class of 1952. He served in the United States Navy on the battleship USS New Jersey and graduated from the Naval School of Music, Washington, D.C. During that time, he married his high school sweetheart, Gail Ogden, whom he met in the band. Later, he earned a BFA from the University of Florida and an MME from Vandercook College of Music in Chicago, IL.

Eugene has been the director of the concert band at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College for the past 16 years. He retired from Worth County High School in Sylvester after serving as band director for 31 years. He was Conductor of the Albany Youth Symphony from 1986 to 1988. Eugene devoted 47 years to teaching music. He was affectionately known by his students as “The Bear” and was greatly admired and loved by all. During his 31 years at Worth County, he received many accolades and awards for his work. He was selected as Star Teacher on four separate occasions and was the recipient of the school’s yearbook dedication. In 1993, he was presented the Distinguished Career Award and the Georgia Music Educator’s Association Convention held in Savannah, GA. He is a Past-President of the Georgia Zeta Chapter of Phi Beta Mu honorary music fraternity, a Past- State Instrumental Chairman with the Georgia Music Educators’ Association. He was selected as Band Director of the Year at the Southeastern Band Clinic at Troy State University in 1992 and was a member of the Board of Directors for the S.E. and Band Clinic at Troy State University. In January 2005, he was inducted into the Georgia Band Master’s Hall of Fame, which is located in the Lowell Mason Room of the Savannah Civic Center. He was a frequent adjudicator and clinician throughout Georgia, Florida and Alabama.

Eugene and Gail were devoted members of Pinson United Methodist Church where Eugene served as choir director, and Gail organist for the past 47 years. He taught the Christian Fellowship Adult Sunday School Class. The Wyles Family were honored as the Family of the Year in 1979. Eugene and Gail retired from their music ministry in the church at the close of 2006.

Eugene is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gail, his mother, Ella June Wyles, both of Sylvester, and the late Carl Eugene Wyles. His children, Julie Gunn (Chester) and their children, Jennifer and Chesley of Chula, Chris Wyles (Gail) and their children, Gene and Derek of Sylvester, Sheri Grabowski (Robert) of Tifton and Eric Wyles (Jennifer) and their children, Ian and Dane of Statesboro.

Emma Jean Cochran McDougald

ALBANY — Emma Jean Cochran McDougald, 60, of 434 Park Place, Brooklyn, NY, died Monday, February 12, 2007 at Metropolitan Jewish Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at New Jerusalem Pentecostal Church in Albany. iIntermentwill be held following at Pine Lawn cemetery in Farming Dale, NY.

A Wake Service will be held today (Monday) at the church between 7 p.m.-8 p.m.

Emma Jean Cochran the third child of 12, was born to John and Mittie C. Cochran in Albany, on February 12, 1947. Born and raised with a desire to serve the Lord, Emma was baptized on June 14, 1955 at the Monroe Street Church of God in Christ under the leadership of the late Bishop J. Howard Dell.

On June 6, 1966, Emma graduated from Monroe High School with honors. To further her education, Emma enrolled in Albany State College, and after one years relocated to New York City, where she continued here education, receiving her Associates Degree from Baruch College in Liberal Arts.

Emma met Johnny McDougald in New York City in the late 60’s at Kelly’s Temple Church of God In Christ and they were married December 10, 1970. Emma was employed by the New York Board of Education. From this union two children were born, Adonia on the five Wedding Anniversary and Latricia, September 7, 1978.

Emma was hospitalized at Metropolitan Jewish Nursing Home in Brooklyn, New York for the past 28 years. Emma’s husband, the late Elder Johnny McDougald, devoted his life to caring for his lovely wife, ensuring that her medical needs were met, even up to his final moments, his last request was to see a picture of his beautiful wife Emma.

Emma went home to be with the Lord on her birthday February 12, 2007 and leaves to cherish her memories, her daughters, Adonia (Jeffery), Laticia (Stephen); two grandchildren, Brandon and Jania; three sisters, Evangelist Lillie Ruth Ziegler (Elder Grady Ziegler), Evangelist Elizabeth Johnson, Missionary Dorothy Mingo (David); brothers, Elder John Cochran III (Linda), Elder Jerry Cochran (Geraldine), Timothy Cochran, Elder Samuel Cochran, and Michael Cochran; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Three brothers preceded her in death, Joe Louis, Charlie Louis, and Chester Napoleon.

ALBANY — Anita Catherine Whittington, 84, of Albany, died Friday, February 16, 2007 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Byne Memorial Baptist Church with Dr. William H. Sims officiating.

Mrs. Whittington was born February 22, 1922 in Calhoun County, GA, to Bosie Conley and Burline Bailey Conley. She was a retired supervisor with Bob’s Candy Company and was a member of Byne Memorial Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Whittington; two brothers, O.W. Conley and Bobby Turner, and two sisters, Nora Lee Paul and Ossie Mae Frazier.

Survivors include her daughter, Pam Peacher of Albany; one brother and sister-in-law, W.D. and Ginny Turner of Albany; one sister, Berthaline Scwartz of Washington State; and one grandson, Dustin W. Peacher.

Family will receive friends at the church following the service.

ALBANY — The memorial service of Charles Eugene (Pete) Vann, 63, of Leesburg, who died Monday, March 5, 2007, at his residence will be conducted Monday, March 12, 2007, at the River Bend boat landing on Radium Springs Road (Mitchell Co. and Dougherty Co. line) . Rev. Buddy Harris will officiate.

A native of Brooks County, GA, Mr. Vann had resided in Leesburg six months moving from Albany. He was of the Christian faith and was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene Felder Vann and Barbara Nell Fuqua Vann.

Survivors include a son, Alan Hester and his wife, Angie of Valdosta; two brothers, Dennis B. Vann and his wife, Colleen of Leesburg, Lucky Jack Santana of Atlanta; and two grandchildren, Chad Hester and Candence Hester.

ALBANY — James Thomas (Tommy) Wages, 35, of Albany died Monday March 5, 2007, in Florida.

Funeral service will be held Friday 11 AM at Life Christian Center International with interment to follow at Oakview Cemetery. Rev. Stan Glass and Capt. Henry Ford Houston, Jr. officiating.

A native of Albany, Tommy had lived in Albany all his life. He was a 1989 graduate of Albany High School and attended Life Christian Center International. He was a painter with Price Painting Contractors and was an avid NASCAR fan loving the 3 and 8 cars.

Survivors include his daughter, Miracle Faith Wages of Albany, fianc{‘e}, Lanetta Newton of Albany; mother, Kathy Houston Harden of Albany; sister, Sheree Sheridan of Lula, GA; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Tommy’s father followed him in death on Tuesday March 6, 2007.

The family will receive friends at Kimbrell-Stern on Thursday from 7 PM until 9 PM.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 17, 2007, at 3 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses (West Congregation) .

Mrs. Cash was a native of Worth County, GA, and had resided in Albany most all of her life. She was a retired seamstress and was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses (West Congregation) and was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Cash and a son, Mike Cash.

Survivors include two sisters- in-law, Agnes Childree, Nita Childree and several nieces and nephews.

ALBANY — Mrs. Dorothy Coachman Chandler, 164 Somerset Dr., died Wednesday, March 14, 2007, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

Born in Miami, FL, Mrs. Chandler had lived in Albany the past 2 years. She was retired from BellSouth after 35 years of service. She loved her children and grandchildren and was enjoying her retirement.

Survivors include her daughter, Michelle Cooper and her husband, Marc of Albany; son, Rick Chandler and his wife, Linda of Atlanta; sisters, Joan Durrance of Ann Arbor, MI, Bette Hochman of Marietta, Brenda LeFebvre of Okeechobee, FL, Pat Root of West Plains, MO; brothers, Frank Coachman of West Palm Beach, FL, Ben Coachman of Miami, FL, John Coachman of West Palm Beach, FL; grandchildren, Christian Hutchinson of Albany, Devon Cooper of Albany, Jaimie Chandler of Mulberry, FL, Kameron Chandler of Atlanta and Harley Paul of Albany.
