Roy Smith Tallent

EAST POINT — Mr. Roy Smith Tallent, age 83, of 107 Orchard Drive, Americus, died early Tuesday morning, July 11, 2006, after an extended illness at South Fulton Medical Center in East Point. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 13, 2006, at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Hugh Harbort officiating, with burial to follow at Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers will be Matthew Molton, Shane Hutchins, Ben Tallent, Matt Tallent, Roy Brown and Bill Harbuck. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the Mens Sunday School Class at Shiloh Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Aldridge Funeral Services, and at other times, at the family residence, 107 Orchard Drive, Americus.

Mr. Tallent, a native of Americus and Sumter County, was born the son of the late Joseph Houston Tallent and Ida Smith Tallent on Sept. 25, 1922. Mr. Tallent was City Marshall for the City of Americus for a period of time, and was self-employed as a monument dealer known as Tallent Monument Company, until his retirement. He was a lifetime member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

Mr. Tallent is survived by his wife, Eloise Saunders Tallent of Americus; two sons and daughters-in-law, Earl Tallent and Wanda also of Americus and Steve Tallent and Karen of Lawrenceville; grandchildren, Ben and Amy Tallent; Bill and Shelly Harbuck and Matthew Tallent, all of Americus; Stephanie and Shane Hutchins of Buford, and Melanie and Matthew Molton of Lawrenceville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shiloh Baptist Church Bus Fund, 961 Shiloh Road, Americus, GA 31719, or to Family Promise of Gwinnett, P.O. Box 1250, Snellville, GA 30028.

Thaddis Sellers

AMERICUS — Thaddis “Dale” Sellers, 61, of Americus, passed away on Monday, July 10, 2006, after a long battle with cancer. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Sumter Humane Society, 702 Magnolia St., Americus, GA 31719.

Mr. Sellers was retired from South Georgia Technical College. He received a master’s degree from Mississippi State University and had a love of flying and building airplanes.

Mr. Sellers was the son of Granville Sellers of Waynesboro, Miss. and Norma Martin of Laurel, Miss. He is survived by his wife, Jacklyn Sellers; three sons, Kelly, Corey and John; one daughter, Vickie Gibson; two step-daughters, Tesa Nutt and Dawn Masker; one step-son, Chad Miller; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was the oldest of seven children, two brothers, Charlie Tompkins and Lynn Tompkins, and four sisters, Barbara Dean, Jean Brady, Ruth Bryant and Anita Merrell.

Albert Bivins

MACON — Funeral arrangements for Albert Bivins of 1323 Madison St., who died Thursday at Regency Hospital in Macon, will be announced by Barnum Funeral Home.

John Lee Mitchell

COLUMBUS — Funeral services for the late Mr. John Lee Mitchell of 121 Howell St., Apt. 18-A, Leslie, who passed Wednesday, July 12, 2006, in the Columbus Medical Center, Columbus, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 15, from the Friendship Baptist Church-DeSoto. The Rev. James Thomas will officiate and burial will follow in the Council cemetery. The remains will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to the services.

Mr. John Lee Mitchell was born in Sumter County on July 7, 1936, to the parentage of the late Mr. Charlie Mitchell and the late Mrs. Minnie Holmes Mitchell.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife of 45 years, Mrs. Essie Mae Hooks Mitchell; two sons, Mr. Timothy (Jeanette) Mitchell and Mr. John Mitchell Jr. and friend, Ms. Eddie M. King; two daughters, Mrs. Nancy (Jimmy ) Reese and Mrs. Patricia (Jerone) Worth; six brothers, Mr. Roosevelt (Bobbie) Mitchell, Mr. Frank (Barbara) Mitchell, Mr. John (Eva Jewel) Mitchell, Mr. Clarence (Miranda) Mitchell, Mr. Willie Mitchell and Mr. Jesse Mitchell.

Survivors also include: two sisters, Mrs. Doshia (Sgt. 1st Class James) Watts and Ms. Erma Mitchell-Brown; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends also survive.

Lowell Benson Beasley Jr.

DAHLONGEA — Lowell Benson “Benny” Beasley Jr., 41, passed away Friday, July 14, 2006. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Heritage Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. in the Oak Ridge cemetery in Tifton. The Rev. Mike Slade will officiate.

Mr. Beasley was born in Americus and was a member of Second Baptist Church of Warner Robins. He was preceded in death by his father Lowell Benson Beasley Sr. and sister, Bobbie Jean Beasley.

Survivors include his mother, Othell Shiflett Beasley, and his sister, Satilla (Jimmy) Grizzle, all of Dahlonega.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Muscular Distrophy Association, 152-C North Crest Blvd., Macon, GA 31201.

Alice Soloman Davis

AMERICUS — Funeral arrangements for Alice Soloman Davis, 176 Jenkins Road, who died Friday, July 14, 2006 at Sumter Regional Hospital, will be announced by Barnum Funeral Home.

Albert Bivins

MACON — Funeral arrangements for Deacon Albert Bivins of 1323 Madison St., Americus, who passed July 13, 2006 at the Regency Hospital in Macon, are scheduled at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, from the Mount Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. W.R. Campbell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Deacon Bivins will lie in repose at the church from noon until the funeral hour.

Deacon Bivins was born in Schley County on July 7, 1916 to the late Mr. George Bivins and the late Mrs. Annie Minter Bivins. He attended the public schools of Schley County and later Sumter County. At early age, he joined the Mount Salem Baptist Church, there he was active as a deacon. For over a decade, he worked for Cooper Lighting as a truck driver.

He leaves to mourn his passing: his loving wife of 68 years, Mrs. Easter Ware Bivins; daughters, Ms. Maude (Vesta) Penn and Ms. Mildred Cooper, Ms. Minnie Weatherspoon, Ms. Emma (Oscar) Cooke, Ms. Nancy Tookes; three sons, Mr. Albert (Johnnie B.) Bivins Jr., Mr. Curtis (Joyce) Bivins, Mr. Robert Bivins; two sisters, Ms. Irene Small and Ms. Ossie Holmes; 35 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends also survive.

George H. Carson Sr.

AMERICUS — Mr. George H. Carson Sr., 84, 517 Sharon Drive, died at his home shortly afternoon on Friday, July 14, following several months of declining health. Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 15, in Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Hugh DeLoach officiating. The men of the Senior Adult Department of the Sunday school of Central Baptist Church served as honorary pallbearers.

Born Sept. 15, 1921, in Carnesville, Mr. Carson was a son of the late Paul Martin Carson and Leila McDonald Carson. He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He and his brother, Ed Carson, bought an existing farm implement dealership in 1965 and successfully operated if for many years under the name of Carson Brothers Tractor Co.

He was president of the company until his retirement in 1993. He was a very active member of Central Baptist Church and the Sunday school of the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Americus and Sumter County, P.O. Box 1434, Americus, GA. 31709.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Nell Callaway Carson; two sons and daughters-in-law, George H. “Chip” Carson Jr. and wife Peggy and Todd Carson and wife Pam all of Americus; sister, Louise Head of Americus; brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Cookie Carson of Americus; grandchildren, Chuck Carson and his wife Megan of Dublin, Jessica Carson and Shelby Carson both of Americus; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Marthaleen House of Americus and Bobby and Betty Callaway of Atlanta and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Leota Payne, Pauline Brown Jones and Ruth Ariail and by two brothers, Willie Carson and Jess Carson. Hancock Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Brenda Elaine Powell

ALBANY — Mrs. Brenda Elaine Powell, 58, of 247-T Hwy. 49 South, Americus, died Sunday morning, July 16, 2006, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 19, from the Chapel of Aldridge Funeral Services with the Rev. Andy Taunton officiating with burial to follow at DeSoto City cemetery in DeSoto. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times, the family residence, 290 Albany Annex Rd., Americus.

Mrs. Powell was born March 14, 1948, in Sumter County, the daughter of the late Angus Jasper Goodin and Bessie Louise Murray Goodin whom survives her. She was a homemaker and a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Ellaville.

Mrs. Goodin is survived by her mother, Mrs. Bessie Louise Murray Goodin of Americus; her husband, John Anthony Powell of Americus; two daughters and sons-in-law, Tina Stringfellow and Robbie and Tami Sullivan and Wade both of Americus; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul Powell and Heather of Americus; sister and brother-in-law, Louise Parker and Charles of Americus; three brothers and sisters-in-law; Wallace Goodin and Jackie, Gene Goodin and Deborah of Americus and Richard Goodin and Jana of Lake Blackshear.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by a brother, Herschel Goodin.

James Edward Swiger

ALBANY — Mr. James E. Swiger, 51, of Americus, died Monday morning, July 17, 2006, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany.

Mr. Swiger was born in Germany, Jan. 10, 1955, a son of the late James Dolian Swiger and Dorothy Marie Patton Swiger Stevens who survives him. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a retired Correctional Officer with the State of Georgia, a volunteer firefighter, a member of the Oglebay Woodcarvers Guild and he worked with the youth at church. He was a member of Riverview Baptist Chapel in Wellsburg, W.V.

Funeral services will be held at Andersonville National Historic Site at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 20, 2006, with Rev. William Hall officiating. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, July 19, at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel, 142 Southland Road. At other times friends may call at the family residence, 1107 Douglas Circle.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Georgia Diabetes Research Foundation, Inc., 1120 W Broad Ave., Suite A-1, Albany GA 31707.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Helen Swiger of Americus; a son, Jimmy Swiger of Windsor Heights, W.V.; a daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Lance Cornell of Rochester, N.Y.; his mother and stepfather, Dorothy and Ulmer Stevens of Americus; a sister and brother-in-law, Sandy and James Alford of Andersonville and three grandchildren, Alstin Swiger, Charles Cornell and Helena Cornell.

Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Hugh Walker Bowen Jr.

MT. PROSPECT, Ill. — Hugh Walker Bowen Jr., of Elk Grove Village, Ill., passed from this life into eternity Sunday morning, July 9, 2006, at Holy Family Medical Center in Mount Prospect, Ill., after battling to recover from recent lung cancer surgery.

Mr. Bowen was the only child born to the late Sara Oliver (Bowen) DuPre, of Americus, and the late Hugh Walker Bowen, of Olympia, on Aug. 18, 1926. He was the stepson of the late Charles Augustus DuPre, of Americus. He was the grandson of the late George and Callie Coney Oliver, of Americus, and the late Solon Walter and Martha H. Morehouse Bowen, of Olympia. He was a graduate of the Americus High School Class of 1943, and went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Russian history from the University of Georgia. Before completing his degree from the University of Georgia, Mr. Bowen honorably served a tour of duty in the Navy, in the Pacific during World War II.

He began a career, in 1953, with Washington National Insurance Company, based in Evanston, Ill., and retired in 1985 as manager of agent licensing.

He was a founding and active member, up until his recent illness, of the Elk Grove Village Rotary Club, and a founding member of Prince of Peace United Methodist Church of Elk Grove Village. Mr. Bowen was also an active member of the Americus Rotary Club before moving to Illinois. He was christened in the First United Methodist Church in Americus. He was also a Kentucky Colonel and was raised as a Mason at Glenview Lodge, and became a Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner at Medinah (Illinois) Temple.

Mr. Bowen is survived by his former wife, and the mother of his three children, Jacquie Gerondale Bowen, of Livonia, Mich.; his daughters, Belinda Bowen Bracewell of Dothan, Ala., and Sara K. “Sissy” Bowen of Americus; son and daughter-in-law, Hugh and Anne-Marie Bowen of Orlando, Fla.; and grandsons, Christopher Michael Bracewell of Atlanta and Alexander Hugh Bowen of Orlando, Fla.; as well as cousins and many cherished friends.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 15, 2006, at Prince of Peace United Methodist Church, 1400 Arlington Heights Road, in Elk Grove Village, Ill.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 22, 2006, at the George and Callie Oliver lot at Oak Grove cemetery in Americus. The Rev. Billy Key will officiate, and J.W.C. “Billy” Horne Jr., a member of the Americus High School Class of 1943, will offer remembrances of his classmate. Members of the Americus High School Class of 1943 are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers.

A reception/luncheon celebrating Mr. Bowen’s memory will immediately follow at the Parish Hall at Calvary Episcopal Church, 408 S. Lee St., in Americus. All friends of Mr. Bowen and his family are invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Prince of Peace United Methodist Church, 1400 Arlington Heights Road, Elk Grove Village, Ill., 60007. A special church project is being established in Mr. Bowen’s memory.

Alice Solomon Davis

AMERICUS — Funeral services for Mrs. Alice Solomon Davis, affectionately called “Sue” of 176 Jenkins Rd., Americus who passed on Friday, July 14, 2006, in the Sumter Regional Hospital will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 20, 2006, from the Bethlehem Baptist Church. The Rev. George Edge will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The remains will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to the services.

Mrs. Alice Solomon Davis was born in Sumter County on Nov. 5, 1962, to the parentage of the late Mr. Booker T. Solomon and Mrs. Thelma Solomon Foster, who survives.

In addition to her mother, Mrs. Thelma Foster and stepfather, Mr. Rosell Foster, she leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, Mr. Essie Leon Davis; a daughter, Mrs. Shamika (Courtney) Cook; son, Mr. Derrick Coley Jr.; four sisters, Ms. Catherine Sims, Ms. Josephine Reese, Mrs. Evelyn (James) Davis and Ms. Leana Thomas; four brothers, Mr. Jesse Durham, Mr. Booker T. (Georgie) Solomon Jr., Mr. Rayford Solomon and Mr. Roosevelt (Linda) Solomon; a granddaughter, Ashlee Cook; her mother-in-law, Ms. Betty M. Griffin and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends also survive.
