Barbara Larson Kiker

AMERICUS — Mrs. Barbara Larson Kiker age 85 of 108 Woodcrest Court Americus, died Friday, July 6, 2007 at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday from the graveside at Oak Grove cemetery. The Rev. Hugh DeLoach and the Rev. Brian Myers officiating. The family will receive friends at 108 Woodcrest Court, Americus.

Mrs. Kiker was born May 14, 1922 in Monticello, Mo. She was the daughter of the late Albin Lawrence Larson and the late Jenny Cooley Larson. She was a floral designer for many years and was a former member of Glenwood Baptist Church in Oak Ridge, Tenn., where she served as Sunday School teacher & superintendent, WMU President, and Circle Leader. After retiring in 1982, she and her husband moved to Americus and joined Central Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Gay Kiker Smith of Americus, one son Jack Kiker of San Francisco, Calif.; a granddaughter, Leslie Smith Reese and husband Dean of Leesburg; one sister, Glenice Larson Terry of Americus; a niece, Carol Kiker Townsend of Americus; and two great grandchildren, Braden and Carley Reese of Leesburg. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ned Jackson Kiker Sr. in 1983.

Memorials may be made to Samaritan’s Purse or Operation Christmas Child, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, N.C., 28607-3000.

Annie Ruth Hawkins

ALBANY — Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Ruth Hawkins of Jackson Street Americus will be held at 10 am. today, July 3, 2007 at the Lebanon Baptist Church in Plains, with the Rev. Walter Washington officiating. Burial will follow at the Lebanon Cemetery.

Mrs. Hawkins died on Thursday, June 28 at the Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Annie Ruth Hawkins was born on Jan. 1, 1954 in Plains to Lula Crecie Britt and Joe Roy Britt. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and graduated from Plains High School. She also attended South Georgia Tech and graduated from Riley Institute. She was employed in the Sumter County School System for several years as a Paraprofessional.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Lewis Hawkins; her children: Alisia Benita (Vincent) of Dawson, Broderick Hawkins (Natavia), Lewis Jeffery Hawkins (Lakeshia) of Sanford, Fla., Tawana Shai Hawkins and Jeremy Rashaan Hawkins both of Americus; her parents Lula Crecie Britt of Plains, and Joe Roy Britt of Deland, Fla.; one sister, Commie Ruth Wright of Plains; three brothers: Johnny Frank Cottle of Hawthorn, Calif., Lawrence Britt (Irene) of Americus and Joe Roy Britt Jr. (Patricia) of Smithville; aunts & uncles: Ollie Mae Bingley, Corine Kinlow and Robert James all of South Carolina, Exie Brown and Jean Angry both of Plains, Velma Raven, Agnes Angry, Clifton Angry, Johnny Raven, Charlie Hollis and Pearl Wade all of Americus; a devoted mother-in-law, Rosa Patterson of Americus; sisters and brother-in-laws: Barbara Terry of Atlanta, Debra and John Hall of Enterprise, Ala., Patricia Jackson of Americus, Viola (Nathan) Artis of Wilson, North Carolina; Nettie (Roy) Sallett of Jacksonville, Fla., Rosa (Alfonzo) Fuller of Detroit, Mich.; James (Gracie) Patterson, Frank Patterson Jr., Gregory (Joyce) Patterson, Reginald (Sandra) Patterson all of Americus; five grandchildren: Trinity Hawkins, Lewis Hawkins, Anthony Hawkins, Jaquessia Hawkins and Traivian Reynolds and a host of other relatives and friends.

West’s Mortuary of Americus & Montezuma are in charge of arrangements.

Hazel Humphries Williams

SMITHVILLE — Funeral services for the late Hazel Humphries Williams of 169 Muckaloochee Rd., Smithville, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 13, 2007, from the Green Grove Baptist Church. The Rev. Hosie Waters will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The remains will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to the services.

Mrs. Hazel Humphries Williams was born Sept. 9, 1935, in Albany to the parentage of the late Mr. Joseph Humphries and the late Mrs. Mattie Sutton Humphries. She worked in the Lee County School System for three years and retired from the Sumter County School System after 35 years of dedicated service.

She leaves to cherish her memories her husband of 51 years, Mr. Raymond Williams and a son, Mr. Joseph Williams; three grandsons, Masters Jarvis Williams, Jaelan Williams and Mr. DeMarcus Bess; two aunts, Ms. Tammye Searcy and Ms. Louise Sutton; uncle, Mr. John Denson and a host of brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends also survive.

Barnum Funeral Home is in charge of these arrangements.

Rachel Carolyn Thompson Daniel

AMERICUS — Mrs. Carolyn Daniel, 68, of 122 Southland Road, died Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at her residence. A native of Pulaski County, Mrs. Daniel was born March 9, 1939, a daughter of the late Roy Thompson and Jewell Lee Denton who survives her. She was employed by Sumter Regional Hospital as an LPN and was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 13, 2007, in the chapel of Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel. Rodney Hollon will deliver the eulogy with Walter Compton assisting. A visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., today, at the funeral home. At other times, family and friends may call at the residence of Linda and Mike Mock, 256 Ga. Hwy. 49 North.

The family request that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Ann Harris, 1801 Rose Ave., Americus, Ga. 31709.

Survivors other than her mother, Jewell Lee Denton of Americus, are three daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Mike Stephens of Cobb, Lynn and Ed Garro of Albany, La. and Darlene and Shaffee Deen of Rockville, Md.; one son, Bobby Vanzant of Lizella; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Brinda and Paul Blackston of Ellaville and Linda and Mike Mock of Americus. Five grandchildren, Joshua Sibley, Christopher Blair Sibley, E. J. Garro, Katie Garro and Sara Stephens, also survive.

Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Juila Mae Jordan Ethridge

BUENA VISTA — Julia Mae Jordan Ethridge, age 94, of Buena Vista, formerly of Americus died Sunday, July 8, 2007 at Magnolia Manor of Marion County.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Tante Funeral Home in Buena Vista, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Americus. The Rev. Bobby Jackson will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Mrs. Ethridge was born December 1, 1912 in Abbeville, Georgia, the daughter of Andrew and Annie Kitchens Jordan. She had lived in Americus, Mauk, Douglasville, and at the Magnolia Manor of Marion County for the past 2 years.

She loved her cat, flowers and working in her yard. She lived a fine, long life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ottis L. Ethridge; by her parents; by daughters, Annie May Collins and Jewel Watkins; by a son, Andrew Ethridge; by a grandchild, Jackie Watkins; and by several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her sons, Richard L. Ethridge, Sr. and wife Linda of Douglasville, Georgia and Wade Eugene Ethridge and wife Pat of Indianapolis, Indiana; 17 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren; and 12 great-great grandchildren.

Tante Funeral Home of Buena Vista is in charge of arrangements, along with her grandsons, Bobby Watkins, Gary Watkins, Dwayne Collins, Dickie Ethridge, Ricky Harbin and Gary Lee Watkins, Jr. serving as pallbearers.

Lore Rogers

EVANS — Mrs. Lore Rogers, 45, entered into rest on Saturday, June 23, 2007, as the result of an accident.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at the Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Greg Porterfield officiating. iIntermentwill follow at Westover Memorial Park.

Mrs. Rogers was a devoted wife, mother, daughter and sister. She had a true passion for helping and healing people, through her work and her church. She was a registered nurse and was presently the director of Nursing Services at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center, at Doctor’s Hospital. She had recently received the Frist Humanitarian Award.

She was a very active member of Wesley United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Genesis Adult Sunday School Class. She had also served, through her church, in numerous international and local missions.

Survivors include her husband, Woody Rogers and daughter, Shelby Rogers, both of Evans; parents, Bobby and Juanita Snider of Ellaville; sister and brother-in-law, Millie and Ricky Trussell of Americus; nephews, Jared Trussell, Drexel Trussell and Zachary Murray and nieces, Stephanie Murray Simpson and Brittany Murray.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today, June 26, 2007, at Platt’s Belair Road, Evans.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Mission and Outreach Ministries of Wesley United Methodist Church, 825 N. Belair Road, Evans GA 30809.

James T. Owens Sr.

STONE MOUNTAIN — Funeral services for James T. Owens Sr. of Stone Mountain, Ga. will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 27 in the chapel of Gregory B. Levett South Dekalb Chapel. The Rev. Earl M. Smith Sr. is to offciate. Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., today with wake services from 7-8 p.m.

Mr. Owens is survived by Beatrice Owens and sons, Alton, Darnell, James Jr., Darrell, Roger, Otis and Rodney; 13 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Family will assemble at 12:00 noon at 969 Rampart Place Stone Mountain, GA 30088.

Lewis M. Phillips

ELLAVILLE — Mr. Lewis M Phillips, age 86, of Ellaville, died Monday, July 16, 2007 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m., Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at County Line Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tommy McConnell and the Rev. Graton Helms officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

Mr. Phillips was born in Macon County on April 20, 1921. He was the son of William Henry and Susan Elizabeth Oliver Phillips. Mr. Phillips had served in the Army Air Force during WWII as a First Lt. Pilot. He was retired from the trucking industry. He was a member of County Line Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 191, Al Sihah Temple, and the Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Phillips served as a county commissioner and was the chairman of the Democratic Committee for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Connie Phillips; two daughters and one son in law, Patricia Raines and husband Tom of Thomaston and Diane Avret of Cartersville; one sister, Emily Cooper of Marshallville; four granddaughters and their spouses, Kimberly Bohannon and Tommy of Carrollton, Kristie Greer and Adam of Hampton, Lari Swinny and Jeff of Cartersville and Susie Avret of Cartersville. Five great grandchildren, John Phillips Bohannon, Hunter and Jackson Greer, Jessica and Paul Swinny and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Pallbearers will include Phillip Law, Wade Law, Dr. Brett Law, Jay Cannon, Chancey Kennedy, and Josh Patterson.

Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 17, 2007 at Watson-Giddens Funeral Home in Ellaville.

Tiney Glover Sr.

AMERICUS — Funeral services for Mr. Tiney Glover Sr. will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 25 at the Lebanon Baptist Church in Plains. Mr. Glover died on Friday, July 20, 2007 at the Magnolia Manor Nursing Center.

Mr. Tiney Glover Sr. was born Aug. 12, 1916 in Comer Ala. to Mr. Aaron Glover and Mrs. Annie Bell Mathis Glover. He was educated in the public schools in Barbour County in Comer, Ala.

At an early age he moved to Georgia He was married to the late Mrs. Viola Williams Glover and to this union ten children were born, six of whom preceded him in death, Tiney Glover Jr., Herbert Glover, James Glover, Wilbert Glover, Eugene Glover and Andrew Glover. He was also preceded in death by two brothers David Glover and Aaron Glover and a sister Lena Glover.

He leaves to cherish his memory four children: Ms. Lena Wilson and Ms. Viola Glover both of Plains and Ms. Lizzie Harper of Americus, and Moses Glover of Detroit, Mich.; one brother-in-law, Clarence Jordan of Midway, Ala.; nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Pearlman Alford

AMERICUS — Funeral services for Mr. Pearlman Alford, affectionately called “Big Daddy” of 806-A Georgia Ave., who passed on Thursday, May 31, 2007, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2007, from the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. The Rev. Plezy Nelson Sr. will officiate and burial will follow in the Eastview cemetery. There will be a viewing of the body one hour prior to the services at the church.

Mr. Pearlman Alford was born in Sumter County on June 19, 1949, to the parentage of the late Mr. McArthur Alford and the late Mrs. Lillie Bell Barnett Alford. He was a 1967 graduate of Sumter High School. He was well known for his role as drum major for the school band.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his children, Mrs. Natacha (Roosevelt) Merritt, Ms. Teresa Alford, Mrs. Stacy (Michael) Williams, Mr. Bradford Keith (Charlise) Alford and Mrs. Joshundra (Jerome) Sims; two brothers, Mr. McArthur (Martha) Alford Jr. and Mr. Otis (Annie Maude) Alford; two sisters, Ms. Bessie Mae Alford and Mrs. Ossie Mae (Robert) James; 13 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends also survive.

Sydney Jones

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — Mrs. Sydney Jones, 87, formerly of Americus, died of Friday, June 1, 2007, in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 7, in Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Bill Dupree officiating.

Born Nov. 20, 1919, in Wrens, Mrs. Jones was a daughter of the late Eben Brinson Smith and Marion Lee Palmer Smith. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Americus. For about 36 years she served as the office manager and bookkeeper for what was then known as James Chevrolet Co. and for a short while after the business became Halstead Chevrolet Co. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Hancock Funeral Home.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Price and Christy Jones of Oak Ridge, Tenn. and Eben and Jeannie Jones of Lilburn; two sisters-in-law, Pinkie Smith of Americus and Colleen Smith of Port Arthur, Texas; grandchildren, Brinson and Kim Jones of Peachtree City, Dylan Jones and Makayla Romines, both of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Erin Jones and Carrie Jones, both of Athens and Sean Jones of Lilburn and two great-grandchildren, Kailene Jones of Panama City, Fla. and Chase Jones of Peachtree City. Two brothers, Eben B. Smith Jr. and John Price Smith, preceded her in death.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Americus-Sumter County Humane Society, 702 Magnolia St., Americus, GA 31719.
