OLGA DEAN

Olga Dean, 84, of Bainbridge, died Thursday, June 10, 2004, in Bainbridge.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 12, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. at Prosperity Primitive Baptist Church with Rev. Stanley Phillips, Rev. Max Childs and Rev. Walter Todd officiating. Interment will follow in Prosperity Primitive Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Todd Dean, Chad Dean, Shawn Dean, Chris Dean, Matt Gay, Stanley Phillips, John Bramlett and Randy Martin. Honorary pallbearers were members of Prosperity Primitive Baptist Church.

Visitation will be Friday, June 11, 2004 from 7:00–9:00 PM at Cox Funeral Home Chapel.

Mrs. Dean was born on October 27, 1919 in Decatur County and has been a resident here all her life. She was a retired school teacher from West Bainbridge Elementary School for 20 years and was a member of the Prosperity Primitive Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Otis (Rudean) Dean Jr. and Reggie (Lisa) Dean, both of Bainbridge; one daughter, Janice (Edwin) Powell of Brinson; two brothers, Haywood Martin of Bainbridge and Dwight Martin of Albany; one sister, Dorothy Jean Morris of Bainbridge; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Clifford Dean Sr. and her parents, Clarence L. and Birma Harrell Martin.

Cox Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

WILEY EUGENE EASTERWOOD

Mr. Wiley Eugene “Cooter” Easterwood, age 49, of Thomasville and formerly of Iron City passed away Thursday, June 10, 2004 at Archbold Medical Center in Thomasville.

Mr. Easterwood was born in Seminole County on December 25, 1954 to the Wiley Easterwood and Jeanette King Easterwood. He attended the Seminole County Schools, where he graduated from Seminole County High School in 1972. He receive a degree from Tallahassee Community College. He was the AAU coordinator for Women’s Basketball in Thomasville for 14 years and a member of Thomasville’s Little Theatre.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 12 at 2:00 p.m. at the chapel of Evans-Skipper Funeral Home in Donalsonville. Interment followed in New Home Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery in Miller County. A memorial service was held Sunday afternoon, June 13, at 4:00 p.m. at Good Shepard Episcopal Church in Thomasville.

Pallbearers were Ron Scott, Mike House, Jim Duke, John Wood, Clinton Hatcher, and Stanley Smith.
Survivors include his mother, Jeanette Easterwood, Iron City; one son, Chris Easterwood, Quitman; two brothers, Tommy Easterwood, Iron City, Larry Easterwood, Yazoo, MS; and several nieces and nephews.
Evans-Skipper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

ANNETTE LASSITER MARTIN

Annette Lassiter Martin, 83, of Albany, formerly of Donalsonville, died Thursday, June 10, 2004 at Palmyra Nursing Home in Albany.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 11, at 4:00 p.m. at Calvary Assembly of God Church in Donalsonville with Rev. James Scarborough and Rev. Curtis Earnest officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Russell Day, Earl Stewart, Bruce Elmore, Charles Adkinson, Charles Elmore and Eugene Horne.

Mrs. Martin was born in Doerun on September 12, 1919 to the late Robert Lee and Irene Hamilton Lassiter. She was employed for a number of years by McCollum’s Cleaners of Albany as a seamstress and was also a homemaker. She was married to Neely E. Martin who preceded her in death in 2000. She was a member of Calvary Assemble of God Church in Donalsonville. She lived in Albany for the past three years.

Survivors include three sons, Tony Martin and his wife Betty, Bobby Martin and his wife Kay and Roger Martin and his wife Sue, all of Leesburg; one daughter, Pat Reynolds of Greensboro, NC; nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

IRENE COWART SYMONDS

Irene Cowart Symonds, 65, of Jakin, died Sunday, June 6, at Donalsonville Hospital.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 9, at 2:00 p.m. at the chapel of Evans-Skipper Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Johns officiating.
Pallbearers were Toby Spence, Gabe Spence, Michael Smith, Frank Standifer Jr., David Moseley and Ryan Howell.

Mrs. Symonds was born on November 3, 1938 in Seminole County to the late Leon and Lucille Danford Cowart. She was a retired nurse from the Medical Center in Dothan. After retiring from the medical center, she worked at Early Memorial Hospital in Blakely.

Survivors include one son, Billy Eugene Kirkland and his wife Margaret of Trafford, AL; three daughters, Rhonda Able and her husband Stanley of Vero Beach, FL, Cathy Ness of Port St. Lucie, FL and Pam Cunningham and her husband Jim of Donalsonville; three sisters, Christine Smith of Columbia, AL, Daphine Spence of Colquitt and Wylene Moseley of Jakin; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Buddy Cowart.

CHARLES EUGENE GLISSON, SR.

Charles Eugene Glisson, Sr., 65, of Bainbridge, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at his residence.

Graveside services were held Monday, June 7, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at the Lynn Family Cemetery in Donalsonville with Steven Bostick speaking.
Mr. Glisson was born on March 15, 1939 in Seminole County to the late Charlie Glisson and Nellie Miller Glisson. He was self-employed, having owned Glisson’s Hood and Exhaust Cleaning Service for many years. He was married to Mary Joyce Alley Glisson, who preceded him in death on April 16, 2004.

Survivors include his mother, Nellie Miller Glisson of Bainbridge; one son, Charles Glisson and his wife Melanie of Bainbridge; two daughters, Jenny Bostick and her husband Steven of Knoxville, TN, Cindy Doyle and her husband Shawn of Coatesville, PA; one sister, Gloria Jean LeCates of Bainbridge; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Evans-Skipper Funeral Home of Donalsonville was in charge of the arrangements.

PELLIE WATTS POLLOCK

Pellie Watts Pollock, 93, of Donalsonville, died Thursday, June 17, 2004 at Seminole Manor Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 19, at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Donalsonville with Dr. Ron McCaskill officiating. Interment will follow at Dellwood Cemetery in Mitchell County.

Visitation will be held Friday, June 18, 2004 from 7:00–9:00 PM at Evans-Skipper Funeral Home in Donalsonville.

Mrs. Pollock was born in Jackson County, FL on October 29, 1910 to the late John Frank and Emma Mitchell Watts. She worked as a store clerk for a few years then later married Rev. Jesse Pollock and became a homemaker. Rev. Pollock preceded her in death in 1982. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Donalsonville.

Survivors include two step-sons, J.B. Pollock of Mt. Vernon, WA and Curtis Pollock and his wife Betty of Arlington, TX; several step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two step-daughters, Velma Pollock and Lois Pollock.

HELEN LILLIAN KOVARIK MELSH

Helen Lillian Kovarik Melsh of Cedar Rapids, Iowa who passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, June 9, 2004 in Donalsonville at the home of her daughter. She celebrated her 91st birthday on January 8, 2004
A memorial mass was offered at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 12, 2004 at Incarnation Catholic Church , Donalsonville with Father Joel Bladt officiating.A Czech Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, Iowa where Mrs. Melsh was baptized, confirmed, and married. Burial followed at St. John’s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Mrs. Melsh was born on January 8, 1913 in Spillville, Iowa where she was raised by her late parents, Charles and Lula Brom Kovarik. She was married to her late husband, Lester M. Melsh, on August 221, 1944. She attended local parochial and public schools. She graduated from Rudolphinum High School in Protivin, Iowa in 1931. She attended Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids on scholarship. In 1934 she was awarded a certificate in education. Mrs. Melsh taught in Winneshiek County Rural Schools and Chelsea public schools, and at Immaculate Conception Parochial School in Cedar Rapids. Mrs. Melsh was a longtime member of Incarnation Catholic Church in Donalsonville. She had past membership at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabel, Council of Catholic Women, and Young at Heart.
Mrs. Melsh was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Melsh, an infant son, Terrance Mark Melsh, her sisters Marcella Kovarik and Dorothy Kovarik Meyer, and a close cousin Cecilia Brom Robinson.
Mrs. Melsh is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lu and Charles L. “Roy” Lott of 2772 Parkside Drive, Donalsonville; her brother, Victor Kovarik and his wife Evelyn of Donalsonville; several nieces, nephews and close friends. Evans-Skipper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

JAMES P. NELSON, JR.

James P. “Jim” Nelson, Jr. age 79, of Donalsonville, passed away Thursday, June 10, 2004 at his residence.
Funeral services for Mr. Nelson was held Saturday, June 12 at the Chapel of Evans-Skipper Funeral Home in Donalsonville with Minister David Jamison and Minister Tim Bell officiating. A private interment followed in the Salem-Seminole Baptist Church Cemetery at a later date.
Mr. Nelson was born in Beaufort, South Carolina on October 6, 1924 to the late James P. Nelson, Sr. and the late Ruth Wade Nelson. He worked as a quality engineer for Martin Marietta Corp. in Orlando, FL where they built missiles. After moving to Donalsonville in 1976, Mr. Nelson worked as the parts manager for Sunbelt Equipment Company in Colquitt, Early Tractor Company in Donalsonville, and Bridges Equipment Company in Brinson. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Donalsonville, a mason with the Pine Castle Lodge #368 F&AM of Orlando, FL, and a member of the Scottish Rite Temple. Mr. Nelson served his country during World War II as a flight officer in the Army Air Corp.
Mr. Nelson leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife, Hattie H. Nelson of Donalsonville; one son, Thomas Nelson of Trinity, Texas; two daughters, Pamela Miller and her husband James of Charleston, South Carolina and Wanda B. Hill of Topeka, Kansas; five grandchildren, Aaron Nelson, Timothy Nelson, Cheryl Miller, Lindsey Miller, and Victor T. Hill, Jr. and one great grandson, Victor T. Hill, III.
Pallbearers will be members of the local Mason organization as well as an US Army Honor Guard. Evans-Skipper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

REV. RALPH H. NORMAN JR.

Services for the Rev. Ralph H. Norman Jr., 61, Milledgeville, were held Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at First Baptist Church in Eatonton.
The Rev. Dr. Page Fulgham, the Rev. Dr. Gary Abbott and the Rev. Bill Kitchen officiated. Tev. Norman died Sunday, June 19, at his residence.

A son of the late Ralph H. Norman and the late Margaret Wilson Norman, he was a native of Thomasville and had lived in Milledgeville for the past five years. He was employed as vice president of advancement at Georgia College and State University for the past five years and had previously served as associate vice president of development at Mercer University and had served as vice president of development at Brewton Parker College. He had pastored the First Baptist Church of Colquitt, First Baptist Church in Manchester, Crestview Baptist Church in Warner Robins, College Hill Baptist Church in Ailey and had served as interim pastor of Ft. Valley First Baptist Church as well as churches in Hawkinsville and Sandersville.

Survivors include his wife, Joy Sauls Norman of Milledgeville; children, Meg Crowder and husband, Jack of Lawrenceville, Amy Horne and Laura Joe Smith of Tallahassee, FL, Jill McDaniel of Warner Robins, Brian Crews of Houston, Texas; sister. Sandy McCann and husband, Charlie; Frances May and husband, Sid all of Ellijay, Hattie House and husband, Randy of Thomasville; brother, Dallas Norman of Thomasville; five grandchildren, Ben and Brad Crowder of Lawrenceville, Lauren and Caroline Horne and Madison Smith of Tallahassee, FL.

Williams Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

LUCILLE TIMMONS

Lucille Timmons, 98, of Arlington, died Monday, June 14, 2004, at he home in the Rowena community.

Funeral services were held June 16, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. at Arlington Baptist Church with Dr. Gary Hadden officiating. Interment followed at Oak Grove Cemetery in Arlington.

Pallbearers were Hank Jester, Tony Smith, Bob Tabb, Joe Bryan, Ike Newberry, Willis Duvall and Charles Robertson.

Mrs. Timmons was born December 23, 1005, in Early County, to the late Frank Daniels and Ola Steadham Daniels. She was a homemaker and retired farmer. She was the oldest living member of Arlington Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the W.M.U.

Mrs. Timmons was a board member for forty years for the Early County Department of Family and Children Services, a member of the Blakely Chapter No. 282 of the Order of the Eastern Star and served as a Past Matron; a member of the Peter Early Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in Dawson, a Charter member in 1938 of the Dogwood Garden Club and a REA community leader of the Mitchell EMC.

Survivors include two sons, Jimmie Hodge Timmons and wife Lorraine, and John Steadham Timmons of Arlington; three grandchildren, Frank D. Timmons and wife Wendy; Jimmy B. Timmons and wife Tera; and Elizabeth Timmons; two great-granddaughters, Taylor and Emily Timmons; a daughter-in-law Betsy Timmons Kroepel and daughter Alex Kroepel; one sister, Wynette Daniels Cook; several nieces and nephews; and two special caregivers, Rebecca Swords and Nora Mae Reed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie Hodge “Red” Timmons; an infant daughter; a son, Frank Daniels Timmons; a brother, Tennyson Daniel; and a sister, Berta Daniel Cook.

Manry-Jordan-Hodges Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

ROBERT BURN

Robert Burn, 83, of Jakin, died Monday, June 28, 2004 in Americus.
Graveside funeral services were held Thursday, July 1, 2004 at Bethel Cemetery in Cedar Springs with the Rev. Johnny Roberts officiating. Interment followed in Bethel Cemetery.

Mr. Burn was born on May 18, 1921 in Woodlyne, NJ to the late William and Laura Hunter Burn. He was married to the former Emmie “Jo” Cannon who preceded him in death in 2002. Mr. Burn was retired from the heating and air conditioning business. He was a member of the Pipefitters Union as well as a member of the Springfield Baptist Church in Jakin. Mr. Burn served his country in the U.S. Army, receiving the World War II Victory Medal, the American Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

Survivors include, one brother, Richard Burn of Florida; one sister, Laura Kirkwood of Collingswood, NJ; one sister-in-law, Betty Adams of Jakin; one special niece, Tina Davis of Jakin; several nieces and nephews.

Evans-Skipper Funeral Home of Donalsonville was in charge of the arrangements.

ELLIS CHOICE

Ellis Choice, 71, of Colquitt, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church at 1:00 p.m. with Overseer Gladys Hall of Circle of Love Restoration Temple in Newton officiating. Interment followed in Rocky Cemetery in Fort Benning.

Mr. Choice was born June 29, 1932, to the late Ms. Alma Jackson and Mr. Lyle Choice. Ellis was better known to his family and friends as “Slim” or “Baby”. In 1960, he married a “special woman” the former Joshie Mae Harris, James. He served during the Korean War in the United States Army, receiving an Honorable Discharge. He was the very first black Over the Road Professional Truck Driver, from the Southwest Georgia Area and the first from Colquitt, Miller County.

Survivors include, his wife, Joshie Mae Harris, James, Choice of Colquitt; three daughters, Cheryl James of Atlanta, Charlotte Hope and Bontresia Hope of Sylvester; three sons, Harry James, Sr. (Lillian) of Newton, Norman James and Lillian Moore of Atlanta, Larry James (Gladys) of Stone Mtn.; 19 grandchildren; 18 grandchildren; two sisters, Carrie Bell Railey of Albany and Sara Choice of Miami, FL; one brother, Moses Choice of Philadelphia, PA; and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Henry, Raleigh and Edward Sr.

Meritt and Sons Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.
