Nettie Hunt
Mrs. Nettie Jenkins Hunt, 95, of Sparta, died Dec. 7, 2008 in Chaplinwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was a native of Carnesville, Ga, the daughter of the late John and Essie Williams Jenkins and the widow of Luther Hunt. She was also preceded in death by two sons: Norman and Julius Dunson; three daughters: Johnnie Sue Morgan, Julie Dunson and Lucy Mae Dunson; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mrs. Hunt was a member of Independence UMC and a retired sewing machine operator from Royal Manufacturing. She lived most of her life in Wilkes County but lived in Milledgeville for the past five years. Funeral services were Wednesday, at 2:00pm in Fishing Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Roy Cates officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Grandsons served as pallbearers. Survivors include: four daughters: Mary (R.L.) Fendley, Cleveland, Orene (George) Wolfe, Milledgeville, Beatrice (Bill) Land, Social Circle, Jeanette (Wayne) Pullum, Locust Grove; one son: Edward (Doris) Dunson, Dahlonega; three adopted children: Lisa, Lou Anne and Albert Carlisle; one daughter-in-law: Betty Dunson, Tignall; 33 grandchildren; 75 great grandchildren and 30 great, great grandchildren

Cammie Lee Brown
Cammie Lee Brown, age 92 of Monroe, died on Nov. 28, 2008 after a short illness. She was born in Walton County on May 25, 1916 to the late Eva Hamilton and Thomas Luther Garrett. She is predeceased by her brothers Orien, Hulon, Ruben, Perry and Thomas Luther, Jr and sisters Dru Willie Rice and Eva Ree Stuart. After high school she attended A & M School then went to work as a secretary at the National Bank of Walton County in 1934 where she worked for some thirty odd years both before and after the war. She attended the World's Fair in New York the opening of Gone With The Wind at the Fox Theatre and used her own savings to buy a car in 1936. Her brother Ruben and his wife Louise introduced her to Albert Brown at Harmony Baptist Church and they married on April 12, 1941 - at the preacher's house at 8:00 in the morning so she could get to work on time when the bank opened at 9. They were married for 55 years, until he passed away in 1996. During WWII Albert was stationed in Miami where she worked at the Bank of Miami and their son Jim was born. She was a hard worker and a diligent saver and investor who taught her children and grandchildren to do the same. After the war she and Albert lived with her parents until they saved enough money to pay cash for the materials to build a house. With the help of Albert's brothers they built a house on her Daddy's farm in 1950 where they lived the rest of their lives. She was raised in the Presbyterian Church and Albert in the Baptist so they compromised in raising their children and throughout their marriage attended Harmony Baptist on the 1st and 3rd and Ray Memorial Presbyterian on the 2nd and 4th Sundays. She served as church treasurer for many years and was active in Women of the Church.

Larry Palmer
Larry Palmer, age 75 of Monroe, died on Dec. 8, 2008. He was born in Walton County on July 17, 1933 to the late John Palmer and the late Hattie Palmer. Surviving are: wife: “Clara” Christine Palmer; Son and daughter-in-law: Phillip and Jonell Palmer of Nicholson; daughter and son-in-law: Anne and Randy Holliday of Monroe, Elaine and Jonathan Ray of Monroe; sister: Ellen Johns of Monroe; brothers and sisters-in-law: Sammy and Maggie Palmer of Monroe, Joe and Reba Palmer of Statham, Wayne and Debbie Palmer of Eatonton; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 10th at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Pastor Chris Conner and the Rev. Jonathan Ray officiating. Interment followed at DeLay Cemetery in Statham, Georgia.

Margaret “Hazel” Meadows Smith
Margaret “Hazel” Meadows Smith passed away on Dec. 3rd. Beloved wife of the late Walter L. Smith, Sr. Beloved mother of Walter L. Smith, Jr. and Betty Jean Taylor. Sister of Carolyn Rowden, Rachel Turner and the late Wright, Woodrow, Charles and Lucine Meadows. Daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Meadows. Also survived by five grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; nieces; nephews and other relatives and friends. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Eastern Star Metairie Chapter and Crescent Baptist Church in Metairie, Louisiana. She was owner of Meadows Employment Agency, an artist and art teacher, a horticulturist active in floral gardens, and a regular volunteer at Baton Rouge General Hospital as a Pink Lady.

Sharon Maureen Philda Harm, 53, was born in Durban, South Africa, Aug. 13, 1955, to Margaret and Reg Clark. She moved to the United States in 1995 and worked for Caroline's Communications in Snellville for many years. She passed from this life following a long illness, bravely borne, on Dec. 8, 2008, surrounded by loved ones. She is survived by her parents from South Africa, Margaret and Reg Clark, her two sons and daughters-in-law: Grant and Jamie Winterburn of Loganville and Brad and Jamie Winterburn of Lawrenceville; her family in South Africa; sister: Debra Thomson and her brother and sister-in-law: Gary and Vanessa Clark, her family in the UK; father-in-law: Johnny Deiber; sister-in-law: Elaine Mackay and brother-in-law: and sister-in-law: Stan and Jane Winterburn; her nieces and nephews; her extended family in the U.S.: Gordon Winterburn and Sharon Swanepoel, Marlene McGahee, Cheri Rogers, Sharon Hicklin and her many friends. A Memorial Service will be held in Sharon's honor at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at the First Baptist Church of Loganville, 680 Tom Brewer Road, Loganville.

Blenda Wages, age 64 of Covington, died on Dec. 3rd. She was born in Gwinnett County on May 27, 1944 to the late Charlie Weathers and the late Nancy Estell Weathers. Surviving are: sons and daughter-in-law: Mike and Tammy Wages of Carnesville, Ben Wages of Kansas City, Kansas; daughters and sons-in-law: Cliff and Gloria Malcom of Monroe, Lewis and Benita Sparrow of Rutledge; brothers: W.C. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, Dec 6th at 4p.m.. at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Sorrells officiating. Interment followed at Hill Haven Cemetery.

Gladys Byrd Gunn McClure
Gladys Byrd Gunn McClure, passed away on December 3, 2008. She was born on March 17, 1919. Survivors include: three sons: Kent Harold Gunn, Alvin Richard Gunn, and James Phillip Gunn; nine grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. A Christian since the age of 19 until death, a member of Walker Baptist, Calvary Baptist, Clifton Dale First Baptist and East Newton Baptist Churches.

James (Jim) Wagner
James (Jim) Wagner, age 67 of Douglasville, passed away Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 43 years: Jean Wagner, Douglasville; children: John and Marsha Wagner, Marietta, James and Jesmine Wagner, Douglasville, Mitchell Wagner, Douglasville, Megan Wagner, Douglasville; grandchildren: Hailey Wagner, Cumming, Jesse Wagner, Marietta. He was preceded in death by his parents: Arthur and Cora Allen Wagner. Mr. Wagner was a member of Alpha Kappa Phi and received his BBA in Hospital Administration from Georgia State University. His career in Hospital Administration was very commendable with ample accomplishments. He is credited with developing and operating the first Birthing Center in Georgia, implemented a program that led to the accreditation of a 100-bed hospital for the first time in its 30 year history. He was the President and CEO of several hospitals in the southeast. At Grady Hospital, in Atlanta, he was the Vice President of the Maternal/Child Health & Ambulatory Care Services Administrator, Maternal & Infant Care. Joyce Langley Gilley
Joyce Langley Gilley, age 72, of Loganville, Georgia went to be with her Lord Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008. She is survived by children: Marshall (Brenda) Gilley of Huguley, AL, Kathleen (John) Hall of Opieka, AL, Kenneth (Debbie) Gilley of LaGrange,GA, Debbie Massey, Jonny Mac (Mary Ann) Gilley, Ricky (Betty) Pirkle all of Loganville, David Lee and James Gilley both of Lanett, AL; 14 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren; cousins; and other relatives and friends. Joyce loved working with her flowers, sewing, fishing and keeping up with family. She was an avid NASCAR fan. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose memory will be cherished forever.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Nelson “Junior” Irvin. Tom Burgess, age 93 of Monroe, died on Dec. 2, 2008. He was born in Oconee County on June 6, 1915 to the late Edgar Lump Burgess and the late Nora Cain Burgess. He was preceded in death by his wife, the late Hazel Eunice Burgess. Surviving are: sons and daughters-in-law: Tommy and Diane Burgess of Monroe, Joe and Sandy Burgess of Buckhead, David and Carol Burgess of Monroe, Lynn Burgess and Kay Stevens of Bethlehem; seven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Rick Miller, age 53 of Monroe passed away December 5, 2008. He was born in Troop County to the late Luther and Lillie Mae Harrison Miller. Cindy Lynn Hollis-Evans
Cindy Lynn Hollis-Evans On March 23, 1957, John R. and Opal Hollis welcomed their beautiful baby girl into the world. Cindy Lynn Hollis-Evans passed away Monday, Dec. 1, 2008 after a long and courageous battle against cancer. Cindy was a native of Monroe, in Walton County. She was an excellent student and the 1975 Monroe High School Homecoming Queen. Following high school, she attended Georgia College in Milledgeville and the University of Georgia in Athens. In 1980 she went to work for Adams Optics in downtown Athens and quickly rose to the position of manager; a position she excelled at for the last 28 years. Cindy loved downtown Athens and was one of its greatest advocates. She also loved spending time outdoors with her Beagle, Scarlet; particularly on the beaches of St. George Island on the Florida panhandle. She had many friends and loved all people, rich and poor. Cindy is survived by her mother: Opal Hollis; husband: Ron Evans; sister and brother-in-law: Ginger and Ken Nagy and their daughters: Holly and Lindsay.

Maurice “Monte” Wilkins
Maurice “Monte” Wilkins, 50, entered into rest on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009. Mr. Wilkins was born on July 24, 1958 in Macon. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1976 and was a self-employed carpenter. Of the Protestant Faith, he attended New Life Baptist Church. An avid fisherman, he enjoyed music, loved to cook, and spend time with his family. His son, Josheuea D. Wilkins, father, Everett Berton Wilkins, brother, Kerry Wilkins, and grandmother, Mary Kate Peters, all preceded him in death. His memory will forever be treasured by his loving wife: Connie Mishoe Wilkins; mother: Aluara Peters Wilkins; sons: Jeremy Wilkins, Japan, and Christopher M. (LeAnn) Widener, Sr., Columbia, South Carolina; daughters: Naomi R. Widener and Tiffany M. Widener, both Knoxville, Tennessee; daughter-in-law: Heather Wilkins, Gay, Georgia; sister: Charmin (Crayton) Young, Washington, Georgia; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home, with the Rev. James McCullough and the Rev. David Wilkins officiating.

Bill Lewis, age 76 of Monroe, died on Jan. 12, 2009. He was born in Forsyth County, N.C. on Feb. 12, 1932 to the late William C. Lewis and the late Ann King Lewis. Surviving are: wife: Mozelle B. Gary Lemonds
Gary Lemonds, age 61 of Social Circle, died on Jan. 8, 2009. He was born in Walton County on May 13, 1947 to Dorothy McDaniel Lemonds and the late Bryant Lemonds. He was a lifelong citizen of Walton County, real estate broker, and decorated Vietnam veteran. He was inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame at Fort Benning in Columbus, GA, and he was dedicated to his country and those who served. He was also the founder of the Ride for America Memorial Day Parade, started in 1999. Surviving are daughters and son-in-law: Kimberly Lemonds of Social Circle, Jennifer and Jason Needham of Jersey; mother: Dorothy Lemonds of Social Circle; sister and brother-in-law: Glenda and Tom Lewis of Monticello; grandchildren: Jessica Lemonds, John Cwiek, and Pressley Needham, one niece and one nephew.

Eleanor James, age 88 of Monroe, died on Jan. 13, 2009. She was born in Kennebec County, Maine on Oct. 11, 1920 to the late Leroy Welsh and the late Ethel Welsh. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Phillip James, Sr., her sisters, the late Mildred Slocum and the late Marguerite Phillis. A previous employee of Solo in Conyers, Mr. Smith was a maintenance worker for Nisshinbo Automotive Manufacturing, Covington. He is survived by his father: Thomas E. Smith, Monroe; mother: Mabel M. Dr. Kenneth Fortson
Dr. Kenneth Fortson, age 57 of Social Circle, died on Jan. 7, 2009. He was born in Elbert County on July 4, 1951 to Margaret Dye Fortson and the late Weymon Fortson. He was preceded in death by Kyle’s son, the late Frank Scott Williams. Kenneth was a veterinarian in Social Circle for over 20 years and was well respected and loved by all who knew him. God used him in many ways, not only in his practice, but also in the community to reach others for the Lord. Kenneth was an organizer and board member of the Social Circle Christian Learning Center, an organizer of a men’s community outreach group which held an annual men’s retreat teaching Christian leadership and discipleship. He held a weekly bible study in his home for men in his church and community and was a Sunday school teacher at his local church. Most importantly, Kenneth loved the Lord; he loved his wife, Kyle, his children, grandchildren and great granddaughter and was a great foundation for Christ in his family.

John Lee Durden, age 83 of Monroe, died on Jan. 8, 2009. He was born in Walton County on August 15, 1925 to the late Eugene Durden and the late Eula Hooten Durden. He was preceded in death by his wife, the late Annie Ruth Durden. Surviving are: son: Gene Durden of Monroe; sister: Maudie Cooper of Snellville; grandchildren: David Durden of Gainesville, Joey Durden of Monroe; four great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lester R. Whisenhunt, 79, went home to be with the Lord, Jan. 3, 2009, at Abbey Hospice. Mr. Whisenhunt was employed by the U.S. Government for 42 years and was a member of Hebron Baptist Church, Dacula, GA. He enjoyed his family, gardening, traveling, discussing his life and past military life. Sammie Junior Brown
Sammie Junior Brown was born on July 10, 1933 to the late Sampson Brown and the late Pearline Johnson. Raised in Walton County and worked at JD Construction for 20 years and at the Bay Station where everybody knew him. He was an outgoing, well-spoken person, he always kept a smile on his face. Mr. Brown was a lover of Sam Cooke’s music (a change is gonna come), he loved to watch Walker Texas Ranger and Wrestling, and he loved to tell jokes. He loved for his grandkids to brush his hair and beard. On December 27, 2008 Sammie Junior Brown departed this earthly life. He was preceded in death by a son: Sanders Alexander. He is survived by: his loving wife of 50 years: Barbara Brown; sons: Darrell and Antonio Brown; daughters: Savannah Broughton, Fran Brown and Cynethia Brown; daughter-in-law: L’Tanya Brown; grandchildren: Shanethia Brown, Andrianna Brown, Antoria Brown, Antiana Brown, Shanterica and Sharmaisha Preston, Jarvis Norman; god child: Willie Crutchfield, Jr.; brother: Andrew Brown; sister-in-law: Bennie Ruth Carroll; a host of nieces and nephews; precious mother-in-law: Eula Mae Willingham.
