William Frank ‘Billy’ Mullis
William Frank ‘Billy’ Mullis, 78, of Metter died Nov. 12, 2004, in Hiawassee. He was retired Civil Service of 35 years with the Air Force and a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a member of Metter Primitive Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lorene Atkinson.
His wife of 57 years, Gwen Mullis, died on Nov. 16, 2004.
He is survived by a daughter, Susan Hollingsworth of Cumming; two sons, Michael Mullis of Douglas and Clifton Mullis of Cleveland; five grandchildren, Krista Terry of Cleveland, Adam Hurst of Cumming, Allison Kernell of Locust Grove, Greg Hollingsworth and Jeff Hollingsworth of Atlanta; one great-grandchild, J.C. Bennett of Cumming; three sisters, Leila Mae Barton of Hawkinsville, Betty Kidney of Douglasville and Francis Offerman of California; and a brother, Johnny Smarr of Cobb.
Graveside memorial services were held Nov. 20 at 11 a.m. at Lake Church Cemetery.
Wood Funeral Home of Metter was in charge of arrangements.

Windell Johnson
Windell Johnson, 71, of Collins, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004 at St. Joseph Hospital in Savannah. The Tattnall County native had lived in Loxahatchee, Fla. before moving back to Collins 35 years ago. The U.S. Navy veteran served in the Korean Conflict while stationed on the USS Wisconsin BB-64. He was retired from Georgia Pacific. He was a member of the USS Wisconsin Association and the Collins Full Gospel Tabernacle. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lessie Johnson; son, Wayne Johnson; brother, George L. Johnson; sisters, Miner Sparks, Vaska Lee Johnson and Sula Oliver.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of 52 years, Anna Laura Jarriel Johnson of Collins; four daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Dennis Thompson and Debra and Danny Ray Collins, all of Cobbtown, Katherine and Todd Gromes of Claxton and Lavonna (former employee of The Forest Blade) and Richard Drawdy of Waynesboro; a son, Samuel Johnson of Collins; four sisters, Onida Oliver, Cora Cobb, Bonnell Youmans and Faye Screen, all of Collins; a brother, Elvin Johnson of Collins; 18 grandchildren, Charity Hill, Adam Thompson, Paul Thompson, Sarah Thompson, Shannon Royal, Natasha Bashlor, Jennifer Johnson, DeWayne Collins, Hannah Collins, Lori Williams, Ashley Todd, Michelle Daley, Jennifer Drawdy, Jessica Drawdy, DeAnna Hudson, Blake Johnson, Alexis Johnson and Ethan Johnson; six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27 in the chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home in Reidsville, with the Rev. Andrew Nelms officiating. Interment followed at the Little Flock Church Cemetery in Collins.
Pallbearers were Adam Thompson, Michael Bashlor, Grant Williams, DeWayne Collins, Jamie Royal, Michael Daley, Paul Thompson, Michael Hill and Blake Johnson.
Honorary pallbearers were Gary Kennedy, Karon Jenkins, Larry Hightower, Don Oliver, Harold Thompson, Millard William, Hugh Davis, Tony Oliver, Randy Jenkins, Richard DeLoach, Eric Mack and Calvin Anderson.
Memorials may be made to the Collins Full Gospel Tabernacle Building Fund, P.O. Box 469, Collins, Ga. 30421.
Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Lewis Earl “Lee” Turner Sr.
Lewis Earl “Lee” Turner Sr., 83, of Metter died on Monday, November 29, 2004, at Veterans Hospital in Dublin. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served in World War I in Pearl Harbor. He was a member of Metter First Baptist Church, American Legion officer, VFW Commander, Jaycees, Master Mason Cubal Lodge, Elks, Moose and Order of Eastern Star, Blue Star. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Frida Turner; brothers, Kenneth, Clifford, Howard and George Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma Turner of Metter; daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce T. and Carson Jenkins of Statesboro, Cora Sue and John Mims of Cameron, N.C.; sons and daughters-in-law, William and Judy Turner of Green Cove Springs, FL, Lewis Earl Jr. and Allene Turner of Gainesville, FL, Robert Turner and Michael Turner, both of Jacksonville, FL and George Turner of Middleburg, FL; step-son and daughter-in-law, William and Vicky Bird of Metter and Greensboro; sisters, Dixie Jean Sanders of Statesboro, Pauline Wilson of Witchita, KS and Nancy Godwin of Hastings, FL; 22 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A memorial service with military honors will be held on Friday, December 3, at 11 a.m. at Metter First Baptist Church with Rev. Fred Pifer officiating. Escorts will be deacons of the church, members of VFW and American Legion. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Russell Haven of Rest Cemetery in Green Cove Springs, FL, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Metter First Baptist Church building fund.

Walter T. “Pop” Watkins
Walter T. “Pop” Watkins, 85, died peacefully in his sleep at the home of his granddaughter, Marsha Smith, in Savannah on November 24, 2004. He was born in Albany and had been a Savannah resident for more than 50 years. He was employed as a diesel mechanic and later as a shop foreman. He was an army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by one son, Robert Watkins of Cobbtown; three daughters, Laura Stanley of Cleveland, OH; Grace Pierce of Savannah; and Sue Sutton of Franklin; 16 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and a number of great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held on Monday at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Savannah.
Wood Funeral Home of Metter was in charge of arrangements.

Lankford Kennedy
Lankford Kennedy, 91, died Sunday, November 28, 2004 in Candler County. He was a native of Tattnall and Candler Counties. The retired farmer also retired from Federal Pacific Manufacturing Company in Vidalia. He was a member of Eden Primitive Baptist Church in Cobbtown.
Survivors include four sons, Frank Kennedy, Willie Kennedy, Leon Kennedy and Henry Kennedy, all of Cobbtown; three daughters, Mary Kennedy of Irvington, N.J., Roxie and Leo Wilkins of Stillmore, Dophenia and Timmie Byrd of Metter; three brothers, Birkett Kennedy of Cobbtown, Wilbert Kennedy of Jacksonville, FL and Marshton Kennedy Jr. of Miami, FL; six sisters, Elizabeth Collins, Mildred Davis, Geraldine Troupe, Icy Lee Collins, Nora V. Kennedy and Exie B. Eason, all of Cobbtown; 21 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 4, at 2 p.m. at the W.H. Whitaker Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in the Kennedy Family Cemetery in Cobbtown. Wake service will be Friday from 6-7 p.m. at Eden Primitive Baptist Church in Cobbtown.

Sara Eugenia Amason Spivey
Sara Eugenia Amason Spviey, 84, died Saturday, November 27, 2004, at Emory Hospital in Atlanta. She was born March 27, 1920, in Wilkes County, the daughter of Cornelius and Ruth Eugenia Cliatt Amason. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edwin Holland Spivey; and her two brothers, Cornelius C. and Benjamin M. Amason.
She attended local schools in Rayle and Washington and graduated from the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. She later earned a master’s degree from the University of Georgia and an education specialist degree from George Peabody College in Nashville, TN. She retired after many rewarding years in the specal education field, primarily working with the visually impaired in school systems in the metro Atlanta area.
A lifelong Baptist, she was for the last several years a faithful member of Briarcliff Baptist Church. She was not only a member of the church choir but also of the Song of Atlanta Chapter of the Sweet Adelines. She was active in her teaching sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa, and belonged to the Airedale and Terrier Club of Atlanta for over 30 years. She often volunteered to be an usher and docent in local venues, notably for the Atlanta Symphony, the Fox Theatre and the 1996 Olympics. She was an original resident of the King’s Bridge Retirement Center and enthusiastically took part in community life there for the last several years of her life. Her devotion to the Atlanta Braves was well-known among family and friends.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Ruth (Spivey) and Rod Cudigan of Oxnard, CA; a nephew, Phil Amason and family of Athens; a nephew, Billy Amason of Rayle; and Dr. Susan Amason of Flowery Branch.
A memorial service will be held Wedesday (today) at Briarcliff Baptist Church in Atlanta. Rev. Bill Bigger will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be designated for the music ministry of Briarcliff Baptist Church, 3039 Briarcliff Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30329.

Lula Shuman
Lula Shuman, 88, died Nov. 18, 2004, at Candler County Hospital.
She was born Sept. 15, 1916, in Burke County to the late Jasper and Beulah Banks. She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Pulaski.
She is survived by two sons, Robert Banks of Metter and Willie Shubert of Newington.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Pulaski with burial at Mt. Pisgah Church Cemetery in Metter.
Hodges Funeral Home of Metter was in charge of arrangements.

Clinton Earl Smith
Clinton Earl Smith, 70, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at Pleasant View Nursing Home.
The Bulloch County native lived in Cochran most of his life. He was a former school teacher and a chiropractor. He was the son of the late Clinton Edgar Smith and Lizzie Mae Shuman Smith.
He is survived by a daughter, Angela Smith of Cochran; an aunt, Marguerite Perkins of Brooklet; and a cousin, Nell Mock of Sylvania.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at a private cemetery near Reidsville.
Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, was in charge of arrangements.

Amy Delee Sparks Julien
Amy Delee Sparks Julien, 27, of Bonaire, passed away on December 6, 2004. She was born on June 27, 1977 in Swainsboro to Henry and Patricia Sparks. She attended Harvest Methodist Church and was a Georgia College and State University graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Loye and Reba Johnson.
Survivors include her husband, David Julien of Bonaire; her parents, Henry and Patricia Sparks of Bonaire; a daughter, Alyssa Brooke Julien of Bonaire; a sister, Julie Ann Sparks of Bonaire; grandparents, Henry and Helen Sparks of Metter; her mother-in-law, Beverly K. Falvey of New York; and a father-in-law, Donald Lynn Julien, of Arizona.
Funeral services were held on Friday, December 10, a the Chapel of McCullough Funeral Home with interment following in Garfield Cemetery in Garfield.
Memorials can be given to the Alyssa Julien Trust Fund, 204 Willowgate Drive, Bonaire, GA 31005. The online registry can be signed by going to www.mcculloughfh.com

Gordon Edenfield
Gordon Edenfield, 74, died Thursday, December 9, 2004, at Toombs Nursing Home. The Candler county native lived most of his life in Tattnall county. After serving in the Korean Conflict, he served as a member of the Army National Guard until 1992. He retired as a guard from the Georgia State Prison after 31 years. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruby Lee Jarriel T. Edenfield.
He is survived by a son, James Taylor of Reidsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and David Taylor of Ellabell, Virginia and Matt Thompson of Reidsville and Kathy and Steve Bean of Pittsburgh, CA; sisters, Louise Brown of Cobbtown and Joann Edwards of Mobile, AL; special friend, Retha Price of Statesboro; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with Rev. Durrell Harn officiating. Burial was in Cedar Creek Cemetery. Military honors were observed.
Pallbearers were Marcus Eason, Ricky Wilson, Johnny Wilson, Jimmy Moser, Julius Bargeron and Bobby Hatton.

Jody Anne Whetsell
Jody Anne Whetsell, age 21, of Twin City died Sunday, December 12, 2004, at Memorial Hospital in Savannah after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be Wednesday (today), Dec. 15, at 2 p.m. at Twin City First Baptist Church with Rev. Franklin Sasser and Rev. John Strickland officiating.
The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Whetsell Twin City City Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Jason Henry, Chet Chester, Greg Johnson Jr., Matthew McNeely, Britt Claxton and Cooper Fields.
Honorary escorts are David Emanuel Academy Senior Class of 2001, Richard Jones, Bobby Reeves, Jimmy Hiers, Tom Williams, John Morgan and Loy D. Cowart.
Miss Whetsell was valedictorian of the 2001 graduating class at David Emanuel Academy in Stillmore, where she participated in various activities, including basketball and softball. She was a senior at Georgia Southern University in States-boro and had applied to the veterinarian school at the University of Georgia in Athens. She volunteered at the Bulloch Veterinarian Clinic in Statesboro.
She placed 12th in barrel racing at the 2004 World National Horse Association competition held in Augusta on November 6. She was a member of Twin City First Baptist Church in Twin City.
She is survived by her parents, John Wayne Whetsell Sr. and Judy Whetsell of Twin City; two brothers, John E. Whetsell II and John Wayne Whetsell Jr. of Twin City; and her grandparents, Betty and Bob Anderson and Louise Whetsell, all of Twin City.
