Ada Mae Holton

Ada Mae Edenfield Holton, 85, of Brentwood Terrace Health Center died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001 at Burke Medical Center. Her funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at Midville Baptist Church, with the Revs. Leonard Quick and Philip Benham officiating. Burial will be in Burke Memorial Gardens, Waynesboro. Her body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Mrs. Holton, a native of Jenkins County, was formerly of Midville. She had been a homemaker and was a member of Midville Baptist Church. Survivors include three sons, Darrell Holton of Abilene, Texas, Arthur Holton of Waynesboro and Roy Holton of Snellville; a daughter, Faye Benham of Garland, Texas; two brothers, Wallace Edenfield of Millen and Hermon Edenfield of Lawrenceville; and 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be grandsons: John D. Holton Jr., Jeff Holton, David Benham, Jason Benham, Robby Harless, Craig Kean and Mark Herrington. Visitation will be Thursday, Oct. 18, from 7-9 p.m. at DeLoach Funeral Home, Waynesboro. Memorials may be made be Midville Baptist Church, Midville, Ga. 30441.

Lamar Johnson

Johnny Lamar "Mar" Johnson, 25, of Sardis died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001 at Jenkins County Hospital in Millen from injuries sustained from an automobile accident. His funeral was 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at Corinth Christian Church in Girard, with Dr. Bill King officiating. Burial was in Corinth Christian Church Cemetery, Girard. Mr. Johnson was a lifelong resident of Sardis. He was a mechanic with Loren Auto, Waynesboro. Survivors include his mother, Grace Spires and stepfather, Earl Spires of Sardis; his father, Johnny Johnson and stepmother, Louise Johnson of Sardis; a son, Payton Tyler Johnson and his mother, Tammy Muns of Sardis; and a sister and brother-in-law, Jeanette Jenkins and David Jenkins of Millen. Pallbearers were Sam Heddiniger, Joey Frazier, Chad Oglesby, Jamie Morris, Grover Vickery, Hank Tobias, Jeff Gardner, Brad Dixon, William Smith and Leonard Ray.

Troy Underwood

Troy E. Underwood, 60 or Hephzibah died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001 at St. Joseph Hospital, Augusta. Memorial services will be held at a later date at VFW Post 649, Augusta. Mr. Underwood was a native of Jackson County, Maysville, but had lived in the Hephzibah area for over 30 years. He retired as sergeant first class from the U.S. Army having served for over 22 years. He was a member of VFW Post 649 and American Legion Post 178. He was a Vietnam veteran and was Baptist. Survivors include his widow, Janet Key of Hephzibah; two sons, Daniel Underwood of Hephzibah and Jason Underwood of Waynesboro; a daughter, Crystal Underwood of Hephzibah; two brothers, James B. Underwood of Commerce and John H. Underwood of Smyrna; three sisters, Francis Morris of Commerce, Wilma Holden of Acworth and Wanda Sue Hill of Homer; and a grandchild, Cory Underwood. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph Hospice, Wrightsboro Road, Augusta, Ga. DeLoach Funeral Homes, Inc., 2546 Highway 88, Hephzibah, Ga. is in charge of arrangements.

Julia Simms Penn

Julia Simms Penn, 90, of Hephzibah died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001 at University Hospital, Augusta. Her funeral was 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Hephzibah Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Beck officiating. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22 at Elmwood Cemetery in Blytheville, Arkansas. Mrs. Penn, a native of Lake Village, Ark., had made Hephzibah her home for the past seven years. She was a graduate of Baylor University and Arkansas State University. She was a school principal with the Arkansas Board of Education and retired as assistant superintendent of Chicot County Schools, Lake Village, in 1976. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Hephzibah Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles R. Penn Sr., and her son, Charles R. Penn Jr. Survivors include two grandchildren, Charles R. Penn III of Augusta and John Ellis Penn of Hephzibah; two great-grandchildren, Emily Dawn Penn and Allie Nichole Penn, both of Augusta; a daughter-in-law, Clementine Penn of Hephzibah; and a special friend and companion, Linda Mace of Hephzibah.

Charles F. Haas

Charles Franklin Haas, 69, of Gough died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001 at his residence. Graveside services were 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at the Haas Family Cemetery in Gough, with the Rev. Sandra Kennedy officiating. Mr. Haas, a native of Gastonia, N.C., and former resident of Orlando, Fla., had lived in this area for the past six years. He was a retired self-employed merchant and a member of Whole Life Ministries, Augusta. Survivors include his widow, Barbara Smith Haas of Gough; two sons, Bobby Charles Haas and Carl Andrew Haas, both of Orlando; two sisters, Joanne Miles and Betty Price, both of Gastonia; his mother, Ruby Dees Haas of Gastonia; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Willis A. Spencer

Willis Anthony Spencer, 74, of Sardis died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2001 at his residence under the care of St. Joseph Hospice Care. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, Oct. 17), at the Harvest Baptist Church, with the Rev. Russell Wooten officiating. Burial will be in the Sardis Cemetery. Mr. Spencer, a native of Freemond, Ky., was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a truck driver. He was a member of the Harvest Baptist Church in Girard. Survivors include a daughter, Gloria Jean Turner of Six Mile, S.C.; three sons, James McCoy Arledge of Westminster, S.C., Roddy Lee Spencer of Richland, S.C., and Roger W. Spencer of Sardis; a sister, Ola Spencer Leonard of Indianapolis, Ind.; and 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Idell K. Gillette

Idell Kelsey Gillette died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Her funeral was 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Beech Branch Baptist Church in Sardis, with the Rev. Pete Dixon officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Gillette, a native of Screven County, was a resident of Brooklyn. Survivors include her widower, Samuel Gillette of Brooklyn; a daughter, Idell Sapp of Brooklyn; two brothers, Robert Harris and Roosevelt Harris, both of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sisters, Onita Covington of Detroit and Bessie Stewart of St. Petersburg; and six grandchildren.

Julia A. Allen

Julia Agnes Allen of Waynesboro died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001 at Brentwood Terrace Health Center, Waynesboro. Her funeral was Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Upper Room Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., with the Rev. Vincent Allen and Dr. Titus E. Beasley officiating. Burial was in Arlington National Cemetery. Mrs. Allen, a native of Waynesboro, retired in 1986 from the U.S. Department of Treasury, Bureau of Engraving & Printing after 23 years of service. She was a former member of McCullough Covenant Baptist Church in Waynesboro and later united with the Upper Room Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. She served as vice president of the Flower Club in Washington. Survivors include a son, Willie Shubert of Washington; three sisters, Ruby Sanders and Ora Pray, both of Savannah, and Edith Shubert of Waynesboro; and a grandchild. Pallbearers were nephews and great-nephews.

Elmer G. Ashley

Elmer Glen "Punkin" Ashley, 46, of Sardis died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001 at his residence. His funeral was 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at Johnson Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Harmon officiating. Burial was in the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Ashley, a native of Dover, Del., was a member of Light of Hiltonia #433 Masonic Lodge of Hiltonia. He was a member of Johnson Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include his widow, Kaye F. Ashley; a son, Terrance Calles of Sardis; four daughters, Michelle Scott, Lytonia Shumake, Selena Ashley and TaMonika Ashley, all of Sardis; four brothers, Bobby Johnson, Russell Shepherd and Timothy Shepherd, all of Sardis, and Robert Shepherd of Atlanta; four sisters, Sarah Mercer of Sylvania, Nelease Butler of Sardis, Renee Floyd of Germany and Joann Shepherd of Augusta; his mother, Sarah Shepherd of Sardis; and two grandchildren. Pallbearers were members of the Light of Hiltonia #433 Masonic Lodge.

William Hilton

William Hilton died Friday, Oct. 5, 2001 at Burke Medical Center. His funeral was 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at McElmurray Spring Branch Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles Utley officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mr. Hilton, a native of Burke County, was a member of McElmurray Spring Branch Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, the Rev. Thomas Hilton of Waynesboro; two sisters, Lula Lewis of Waynesboro and Virginia Hilton Pless of Atlanta; and four grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Pallbearers were members of Brother of Zion of Lord's House of Praise.

Charles E Warren

Charles Edward Warren died Friday, Oct. 5, 2001 at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. His funeral was 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Forest Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Sylvester Nabritt officiating. Prophet Warren, a native of Waynesboro, was a graduate of Burke County High School and had received a bachelor of science degree, a master's degree and a doctor of theory degree in September 1999 from Progressive Universal Life Church in Sacramento, Calif. He received the J.C. Penney Golden Rule award and minister of salvation in August 1992. He was a National Youth Ambassador and spearheaded Teen Summit. He was a former member of Forest Hill Baptist Church and later united with the Church of God in Sumter, S.C. Survivors include two brothers, Willie Lee Warren and Earl Warren, both of Waynesboro; a sister, Patricia Ann Jackson of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; two half sisters, Doris Lewis of Indiana and Wendy Lewis of Winchester, Pa.; and his mother, Juanita Warren of Waynesboro. Pallbearers were Nelson Bynes, Hosey Dukes, Derrick Lewis, Tim Crawford, John Jones and Paul Lewis

Napoleon Middleton

Napoleon Middleton of Waynesboro died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001. His funeral was 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Fellowship Baptist Church, with the Rev. Willie Mincey officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mr. Middleton was a retired Auto Body employee. Survivors include his mother, Irene Gay of Waynesboro; and other relatives and friends. Mary Gilbert Mary Gilbert of Waynesboro died Friday, Oct. 5, 2001. Her funeral was 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at Palmer Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. J.J. Smith officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Gilbert, a native of Burke County, was a retired farmer. She was a member of Palmer Grove Baptist Church and served as chief of the Usher Board for 25 years. Survivors include an adopted daughter, Carolyn Green of Augusta; a foster son, Eddie Blount; two nephews, Johnny Gilbert Jr. and Ulysses Gilbert, both of Augusta; a great-nephew, Johnny Gilbert III; and a great-niece, Janice Gilbert of Augusta.

Alberta Roberson

Alberta "Pet" Roberson died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Her funeral was 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Pilgrim Christian Universal Church in Fort Lauderdale, with Elder Shirley Ward officiating. Mrs. Roberson was a native of Waynesboro and at an early age accepted Christ in her life and joined Asbury Methodist Church in Waynesboro. She later joined Haven United Methodist Church under the direction of the Rev. Essie Simmons, where she was the mother of the church and served as a stewardess. In 1995, after relocating to Fort Lauderdale, she united with Pilgrim Christian Universal Church and was appointed to the mother's board. Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Ingram; a brother, Willie B. Jones of Waynesboro; three sisters, Josephine Jones, Lee Reatha Lambert and Ella Mae Bradford, all of Waynesboro; six grandchildren, Larry, Joan, Judy Potts, Rosa, Letitia Phillips and Sabrina Singletary; 11 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Bruce Geddis, Jesse Singletary III, Shaun Phillips, Chad Ingram, Raynard McWhite and James A. Ingram Jr.

Jacqueline McLeRoy

Jacqueline "Jackie" Flakes McLeRoy, 51, of Blythe died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at her residence. Her funeral was 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 9, at Botsford Baptist Church in Waynesboro, with the Rev. Wayne Dixon officiating. Burial was in Hopeful Baptist Church Cemetery in Hephzibah. Mrs. McLeRoy, a native and lifelong resident of Burke County, was a member of Botsford Baptist Church. She and her husband operated McLeRoy's Service Station in Waynesboro for many years. She was preceded in death by her son, Charles Leon "Spunky" McLeRoy Jr. in 1990. Survivors include her widower, Charles McLeRoy of Blythe; a daughter, Tera McLeRoy Collins of Blythe; a son-in-law, Michael Chad Collins Sr. of Blythe; two sisters, Brenda Holden of Grovetown and Donna Stuckey of Statesboro; five brothers, James Flakes, Jimmy Flakes, Danny Flakes, Ricky Flakes and Tim Flakes, all of Waynesboro; her parents, Jim and Mary Flakes of Waynesboro; and two grandchildren, Michael Chad Collins and Haley Jordan Collins, both of Blythe. Pallbearers were Jimmy Flakes Jr., Travis Flakes, Stephen Stuckey, Rigoberto Diaz Jr., Alvin Williams and Adam Flakes. Honorary pallbearers were Kevin Flakes, Damon Flakes, Chris Long Jr., Chris Flakes, T.J. Flakes and Jessie Stuckey. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Hospice, 2260 Wrightsboro Rd., Augusta, Ga. 30904.
