Riley “Shoe” Swain, Jr.
Riley “Shoe” Swain, Jr., died on July 25, 2005 at Putnam General Hospital after an extended illness. He was born on April 26, 1948 in Greene County, GA to the parentage of the late Mr. and Mrs. Riley and Bridie Swain, Sr. His funeral services was held Thursday, July 28 at Jefferson Baptist Church in Eatonton it was officiated by Bishop Gus Kilgore, Jr. Mr. Swain leaves to mourn his memories; ex-wife Mrs. Bernice Brundage, two daughters; Mrs. Lachelle D. Swain Jordan and Ms. Shantina R. Swain both of Eatonton, three sisters; Ms. Cecil Swain and devoted sister Ms. Dorothy Swain both of Eatonton, and Ms. Mary Swain of Atlanta, one uncle; Mr. Charlie Ford of Atlanta, two aunts; Mrs. Beverly Radford of Atlanta, and Ms. Mattie Bell Ford of Eatonton, six grandchildren; Ieasha Flowers, Dexter Flowers, Jr., Cedric Jodan, Cortez Swain, Usher Swain and Ke’Asha Farley all of Eatonton, three nephews; David Swain, Jamie Swain both of Eatonton and a devoted nephew Bobby Swain of Milledgeville, three nieces; Trina Swain Stubbs of Atlanta, Tieka Swain and Akeba Swain of Eatonton, one sister-in-law, Debbie Farley of Eatonton, three devoted friends, Travis Coney, Dorothy Farley and Mary Dunn all of Eatonton, other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Interment was in Jefferson Baptist Church Cemetery. Clemons Mortuary of Eatonton was in charge of final arrangements.

Elizabeth Bryant
Funeral services for Elizabeth Bryant were held Saturday, July 23, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Grove Cemetery in Eatonton, GA. Mrs. Bryant died Wednesday, July 20, 2005 at her Macon residence. Mrs. Bryant was the wife of the late Wilfred McConnell Bryant and the daughter of the late Nathan and Ethel Thornburg Hawkins, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Eatonton, where she had resided for most of her life. Survivors include: her daughter, Karen Bryant Coke; her son-in-law, George Stoves Coke, her granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Coke, and her grandson, George Bryant Coke, all of Macon. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to First United Methodist Church of Eatonton, P.O. Box 3129, Eatonton, GA 31024 or to Hospice of Central Georgia, P.O. Box 6533, Macon, GA 31208. Hart’s Mortuary was in charge of final arrangements.

Herman Bruce Channell
Herman Bruce Channell, 78, of Union Point, died July 18 at Minnie G. Bopswell hospital in Greensboro. He was a native of Greene County, and the son of James Archie and Mary Frances Channell. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and former building inspector for Greene County. Survivors include his wife, Felicia Gray Channell of Union Point, three daughters, Kay Acree of Lilburn, Denise Partee of Gray and Susan Huff of Union Point; two sobnsm Randy Channell of Greensboro, and Mark Channell of Bogart; a brother, Clarence Neron Channell of Kathleen; 13 grandhcildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Herman Bruce Channell Jr. and three brothers, Marvin, Pascal and Willard Channell. Funeral services were July 20 at the Union Pint First Methodist Church. Memorials may be sent to the church. Callaway Funeral Home of Union Point.

Moses Clemons
Mr. Moses Clemons of Eatonton died on Saturday, July 2, 2005 at Putnam General Hospital. His funeral service was held Wednesday, July 6 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Calvary Primitive Baptist Church, officiated by pastor Elder H.G. Terry. Interment was in Eatonton City Cemetery. He was born May 23, 1940 to the parentage of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tom and Daisy Clemons. He was a life-long resident of Eatonton and was educated in the Putnam County School System. He was employed by Barry Sanders Dairy until his health failed. Moses leaves to cherish his memories; wife, Rosa “Tina” Clemons, daughters, Daisy (Isadone), and Hattie, son, Ricky (Doris) all of Eatonton. Sisters, Petronia (George) Farley, and Hattie Clemons of Eatonton, brother, Howard (Renee) Clemons of Conyers, step-children, Louise, Alfred, Willie, Calvin, Dexter and Charlie all of Eatonton, 12 grandchildren, three great grand children, aunts, Magnolia Clark, Lula Myrick, Petronia Watson, and Ella Mae Jordan, uncle; John Jordan, a devoted niece, Kathy Key and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends, Mt. Calvary Primitive Baptist Church family and Clemons Montuary staff. Five brothers preceded him in death, James Clemons, Sr., Willie Clemons, Porter Jordan, Tom Clemons, Jr., and Raleigh Clemons. Professional services entrusted to Clemons Mortuary.

Ronnie Sorrow
Ronnie Sorrow, age 58, of 117 Leisure Lane, Eatonton, Ga. died Thursday, July 14, 2005 at his residence. Funeral services were held at Vining Ivy Hill Chapel on Wednesday, July 20 at 5 p.m. with the Rev. Frank Bruce officiating. The Gaston County, Bessener, North Carolina native was born on Jan. 11, 1947 to Joel Sorrow and Velma Sorrow. He was a service technician at Curtis Mathis. Contributions will be accepted toward the funeral expenses. Survivors include one son, Scott Sorrow of Greensboro, one daughter, Angel Holbert of Watkinsville, and two sisters. Vining Ivy Hill Chapel was in charge of final arrangements.

Hattie L. Stewart
Hattie L. Stewart, 91, of White Plains, died July 12 at DeKalb Medical Center. She was retired from the Long Island Railroad. Survivors include a daughter, Muriel George, of Laurelton, N.Y., six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services were July 16 at the Rock Hill Baptist Church in White Plains. William (Billy) Waller Hearn, Jr.
William (Billy) Waller Hearn, Jr., 69, died Wednesday, July 13, 2005. Billy was born June 22, 1936 in Philadelphia, PA to the late William “Tiny” Waller Hearn, Sr. and Stella (Nana) Weglicki Hearn. Billy grew up in Eatonton, home of his father. Billy graduated from Putnam County High School with honors in 1954, also having starred in football, basketball and baseball. Recruited by several major colleges, he turned down offers to play professional baseball and attended the University of Georgia. His stellar career at UGA included being named Most Valuable Offensive Back on the football tean in 1956, being the leading pitcher on the baseball team and lettering in basketball as well. He was a member of the Gridiron Secret Society, G- Club, Blue Key, and Sigma Nu Fraternity. Also while at The University of Georgia he met and married Elaine Holliman of Toomsboro, Ga., who survives him after 48 years of marriage. Upon retirement from Southern Waistband, Billy enjoyed his family, specially his grandchildren. Billy was a lifetime member of the Barrow County Historical Society, Member of the Friends of Piedmont Regional Library, served ten years as a City Councilman for the City of Winder, was a founding member and First Sr. Warden and Lay Reader at St. Anthony’s Episcopal. In addition to his mother and wife, he is also survived by son, William (Tracy) Waller Hearn, III of Winder, and son-in-law and daughter, Chip and Tammy Hearn Walker of Eatonton. Grandchildren Christopher Michael Walker, Holliman Elaine Walker and Brett Anderson Walker of Eatonton and William Tracy Hearn of Bogart. Sisters and brother-in-law, Mary Carlton Hearn Collis and Don Collis of Eatonton and Margaret Hearn Murchison of Flowery Branch and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held Saturday, July 16 at 10 a.m. at Smith Memory Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that offerings be made to St. Anthony’s Episcopal Church Building Fund, 175 St. Anthony’s Dr., Winder, Ga. 30680. Smith Family Home in Winder was in charge of final arrangements.

Margaret Hunter Richards
Margaret Elizabeth Hunter Richards, age 86, of Greensboro, Georgia, died Friday, July 15, 2005, at Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital. Born in Greensboro on February, 8, 1936, she was the daughter of the late John Fred Hunter and Jeffie Lee Baugh Hunter. In 1936 she graduated from Greensboro High School. She received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Wesleyan College in Macon in 1940 and a Bachelor of Music in Composition in 1941. She taught Chemistry and Music in Calhoun and Greensboro before her marriage. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro, where she served as a member and director of the choir and member and teacher of the Thornton McCommons Sunday School Class. Mrs. Richards was an ardent supporter of her community, having been a member and past president of the Greensboro Woman’s Club, member of the Greensboro Garden Club, den mother for the Cub Scouts, and member of the Friends of the Library. During the twenty years that she and her family lived in Atlanta, Mrs. Richards was an active member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, particularly in the music program. She wrote “O Lord, God,” the anthem for the consecration of Oak Grove’s new sanctuary, in 1969. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Margaret Richards of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Helen Anne Richards of Decatur, Georgia; three sons, Roy Martin Richards, Jr. of Fairview, Tennessee, William Hunter Richards of Eatonton, and John Jefferson Richards of Oxford, Alabama; five grandchildren, William Hunter Richards, Jr., Hamilton Griffith Richards, Carson Elizabeth Richards, John Jefferson Richards, Jr., and William Jackson Richards; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Martin Richards, Sr. in July of 1982 and a brother, Dr. J. Fred Hunter, Sr. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 19 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro, with the Rev. Scott Parrish and the Rev. Ira McKeever officiating. Interment followed at Greensboro City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Lee Robbins, Bill Whorley, Craig, Beeler, Ken Cawthon, Peter Topken, and Larry Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. W.H. Rhodes, Jr., Horace Harwell, and William B. Nipper. Chris Baughcum
Chris Baughcum, age 24, of Milledgeville, died Thursday, July 7, 2005 in a local hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday evening, July 9 at Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Milledgeville. Interment was in Heritage Memorial Park. Mr. Baughcum was a lifelong resident of Baldwin County and manager of Thomas Recycling and Alloy. He was active in the Chamber of Commerce. Survivors include: his wife, Kendra Reynolds Baughcum; son, Cline Baughcum; parents, Tom and Regina Baughcum; sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Jason Horne; grandmother, Ura Culpepper; and two nieces all of Milledgeville. Lucille Dennis
Funeral services for Lucille Dennis, age 77 was held Saturday afternoon, July 2 who passed away Thursday, June 23, 2005 in Miami, Fla. Services were held at Jordon Grove Missionary Baptist Church and the burial was followed in the Dade Memorial Park, North, Miami, Fla. Mrs. Dennis, native of Putnam County, lived her childhood and early adulthood in Putnam County. She attended Bell Chapel School. She was married to Charley W. Dennis and to this union seven children were born. Later in life she and her family migrated to Miami Beach, Fla. She was a homemaker and a member of Jordon Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Miami, Fla. She leaves to cherish memories, her husband, Charley Dennis, five sons, William Dennis, Willie Dennis, Walter Dennis, Nathaniel Dennis and Freddy Dennis all of Miami, Fla.; two daughters, Cynthia Dennis of Indianapolis, Indiana and Ella Dennis of Miami, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; one brother, Johnny Williams of Miami, Fla.; and one sister, Lizzie Dennis of Eatonton, and a host of cousins, friends and relatives. Craig Lovin
Craig Lovin, age 17, of Greensboro, Georgia, died Thursday, July 7, 2005. Born in Clarke County on January 12, 1988 he was the son of Bruce and Vicki Lovin of Greensboro, Ga. He was a student at Greene County High School where he was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, treasurer of FFA and lettered in football, baseball and basketball. Along with school sports he loved hunting, fishing and all outdoor activities. Craig was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church of Union Point. In addition to his parents, Vicki and Bruce Loving of Greensboro, Ga., he is survived by a sister, Katie Lovin and a brother, Cody Lovin of the home; maternal grandparents, Tom and Linda Smith of Athens, Ga; paternal grandparents, Henry and Jean Lovin of Conyers, Ga., aunts and uncles, Danny and Becky Moore of Conyers, Ga., Mark and Sherri Smith of Gainesville, ga., Don and Donna Sorrells of Pendergrass, Ga., and Steve and Paula Loyd of Cumming, Ga.; several cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 10, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Bethesda Baptist Church in Union Point with the Rev. Jim Olds, the Rev. Dave Sandridge and the Rev. Jim Martin officiating. Interment followed at the Church Cemetery. Dot Cumbie
Dot Cumbie, 90 of 104 Cherry Street, Eatonton, Ga. died Sunday, July 3, 2005 at Eatonton Health & Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services were held at Vining Ivy Hill Chapel on Wednesday, July 6, 2005 at 2 p.m. Interment was at Eatonton Memorial Park. The Hancock County native was born October 25, 1914 to Dallas Blount and Laura Layfield. She was married to Welch A. Cumbie. She was a lineman at the Aluminum Plant and a member of Marshall Memorial Baptist Church. Survivors include: two sons, Carroll Cumbie of Eatonton and Billy Cumbie of Chesapeake, Virginia; four grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. Vining Ivy Hill Chapel was in charge of final arrangements.

Ruth Mayfield Edwards
Ruth Mayfield Edwards, age 83, of White Plains, Georgia, died Monday, June 27, 2005 at Oconee Regional Medical Center in Milledgeville. A lifelong resident of Hancock County she was born September 12, 1921 to the late Benjamin Cospert Mayfield and Ada Jeanette Smith Mayfield. She attended Siloam and Meadowcrest Schools. She was a homemaker and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Edwards was a member of Mt. Stephens Baptist Church in White Plains, Ga. She was preceded in death by her husband, Perry Edwards. She is survived by four daughters, Martha Jean Meadows of Eatonton, Mary E. Wilson of Madison, Emily E. Harris of Kennesaw and Ann Edwards of White Plains; a sister, Julia Neese of Gainesville; nine grandchildren, Tommy Barnett, Lisa Wooten, Cathy Slaughter, Joy Wilson, Bubba Wilson, Elizabeth Wilson, Perry Johnson, Brittany Deweese and Jessica Sherrer; five great grandchildren, Gerald Slaughter, James Slaughter, John Slaughter, Jeffrey Wooten and Anna Wooten; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Thursday, June 30 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Stephens Baptist Church in White Plains with the Rev. Dennis Garner and the Rev. Bob Boatwright officiating. Dorsey Victor Jones, Jr.
Dorsey Victor Jones, Jr., age 84, of Eatonton, Georgia, died Sunday, June 26, 2005 at Athens Regional Medical Center. A native of Calhoun, Alabama, he was born November 25, 1920 to the late Dorsey Victor Jones, Sr. and Mary Fitzgerald Jones. During World War II he served his country as a Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corp. He was a pilot who loved to fly and soar about the earth. Now he has taken his final flight to be with the Lord. During his working career he was a bookkeeper and had lived in Eatonton for the last twenty years. Dorsey was a fine Christian Man who put the Lord first in his life. He loved his wife and children and they loved him. He raised his children with good Christian morals and taught them to love. We were blessed to have had him for our father. He is survived by two daughters, two sons and four grandchildren. Victoria Turner and husband Dan of Eatonton, and their son, Carl Turner and wife Tonya, Tinsley Baker and husband Mark of Snellville and their sons, Cohn Baker and Chris Baker, Matterson St. Clair Jones of Thomasville and his children Sarah Elizabeth Jones and Austin Jones and Malcolm W. Jones of Thomasville. He is also survived by sisters, Mary Hugh McDonald and husband Mack, Virginia Doss and Betty Crowell; a brother, Robert “Bud” Jones and wife Jackie; and numerous nieces and nephews that he loved. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janette Wilkins Jones in 2003. Graveside memorial services were held on Saturday, July 2 at 2 p.m. at Hollywood Cemetery in Tallapoosa, Ga. with the Rev. Irmtraud Marie Petersen
Irmtraud Marie Petersen, 70, formerly of Eatonton, Ga, died Sunday, July 3, 2005 at the Palms of Pasadena Hospital in South Pasadena, FL. She was born in Berlin, Germany and moved to St. Petersburg, FL in 1993 and the returned to Georgia 2 years ago. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Peter Petersen of St. Petersburg, FL, two daughters, Shirley Ann Petersen of St. Petersburg, FL and Donna Marie Petersen of Nashville, TN, a son, James Siegfried Petersen of Atlanta, Ga., a brother, Siegfried Schneider of Berlin, Germany and a sister Isolde Boetefuhr of Berlin, Germany and two grandchildren, James and Kelsey Petersen both of Atlanta. Stephen Steinmann
“I’ve Gone Fishin” Stephen Alan Steinmann, age 59, died Thursday, June 30 at his home in Greensboro, GA. He was born on August 19, 1945 in Clarksburg, West Virginia, son of the late Edwin Steinmann, and Alice Steinmann of Taos, NM. His family moved to the Atlanta area around 1949, and he continued living there until he moved with his wife to Reynold’s Plantation in Greensboro, GA in early 2004. Stephen Steinmann was a loving and devoted husband, father, son brother and a caring and loyal friend to many. He was an avid fisherman and could not pass a stream, river, lake or ocean without casting a line, always in search of the “big one”. As a passionate gardener, he loved playing in the dirt, and found great joy in sharing his harvest with others. His generosity and kindheartedness won for him the respect and admiration of many. Known for his quick wit and humor, he always had a joke or amusing story to share. Throughout his life, he was a talented athlete, excelling in baseball, tennis and swimming, but was most proud of having run the Peachtree Road Race for twelve consecutive years. His never ceasing optimism, courage and determination in facing his battles with Parkinson’s Disease, stroke impairments and cancer, were truly an inspiration to all who knew him. He will be remembered as a gentle, kind and compassionate man who possessed a tremendous zest for life. Stephen Steinmann graduated from the University of Georgia, Athens in 1967, and then served for two years as First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army as a Finance and Disbursing Officer during the Vietnam War. In 1970 he joined his father in the family business, Corrosion Specialties, Tucker, GA, and in 2001 after 31 years retired as president of the company. He is survived by his wife, Diane Bowman Steinmann, Greensboro, GA: three children, Joshua Locke, Atlanta, GA, Ashley Birnbaum, Alphretta, GA, Brittany Casalou, Suwanee, GA: sister, Page Holley, Taos, NM; brothers, Matt Steinmann, Atlanta, GA and Andy Steinmann, Gainesville, GA: three grandchildren, Ariel, Keeley and Jake, and of course his loyal and devoted dog of nine years, Farmer. His body will be cremated, A.E. Carter Funeral Home, Madison, GA attending. A gathering of family and friends for a dedication and celebration for the life of Stephen Steinmann will be held on his 60th birthday, Friday, August 19, 2005 at eleven o’clock in the morning at the Reflection Garden of Reynold’s Plantation, Greensboro, GA. A memorial bench and brick inscription paver, donated as a permanent symbol of his life by his wife and son, will be dedicated at this time. in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Reynold’s Reflection Garden, 1090 Henry’s Hill, Greensboro, GA 30642. This reflection garden was created and expands through donations only, and all memorial funds will be used for the purchase of trees, shrubs, flowers or benches for others to enjoy for years to come. First Class Petty Officer, Lee Warner Benton, USN, Retired
JONES COUNTY: Lee Warner Benton, 80, of Union Hill Church Road, died Saturday, June 25, 2005, at his residence. The family will receive friends on Monday at the residence of Margaret and Neil Thornton at 979 Union Hill Church Road in Jones County. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am, Tuesday, June 28, 2005, at Union Hill Baptist Church, with burial in the Union Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Harold Thompson and Evangelist Eddie Benton will officiate. Mr. Benton, born on November 08, 1924, in Drexel, North Carolina, was the son of the late Amon Alexander Benton and Katie Katherine Dale Benton. He had lived in Jones County for the past two years, having previously lived for twenty-one years in Putnam County. Mr. Benton served honorably for twenty-one years in Special Services with the United States Navy. He was a member, Deacon and a member of the Trustee Board of Union Hill Baptist Church. Mr. Benton was preceded in death by his wife: Minnie Parker Benton; a daughter: Kathy Williams; a granddaughter: Breanna Thornton; a brother: Charlie Benton; and by a sister: Pearl Bledsoe. Mr. Benton is survived by his daughter and son-in-law: Margaret and Neil Thornton of Jones County; brothers: Joe Benton of Oklahoma, Fred Benton of Milledgeville, Emmett Benton, Eddie Benton and Paul Benton, all of North Carolina; sisters: Irene Hull and Lillie Earl, both of North Carolina; and by four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Union Hill Baptist Church, 951 Union Hill Church Road, Hillsboro, Georgia 31038. The family may be contacted at the residence of Margaret and Neil Thornton at 979 Union Hill Church Road in Jones County. Bridges Funeral Home in Gray has charge of arrangements.

Helen Louise Lawson
Helen Louise Lawson, age 92, of Ellendale Ave. in Decatur, Ga. died Friday, June 17, 2005 at Providence Nursing Home. Funeral services were held at Clemons Mortuary on Tuesday, June 21 at 2 p.m. with Bishop Kilgore officiating. Interment was in Southview Cemetery in Atlanta, Ga. Ms Lawson was well loved by family and friends and was called “Aunt Hellen”. The Macon, Ga. native was born on October 14, 1913 to Lee Lawson and Carried Jordan Lawson. She was a member of the Monumental AME Church in Atlanta. Survivors include: first cousins, Mrs. Ola Kate Gates of Eatonton, Mrs. Carey William of Atlanta, Miss Loretta Aia Dargin of Decatur (Godchild), William Nelson, Jr.-nephew, Irene Nelson of Eatonton-niece, Regina Gotel of Monticello and a host of nieces and nephews in Eatonton and Monticello. Pallbearers were William Nelson, Jr., Robert Burstons, Howard Clemons and others. Clemons Mortuary was in charge of final arrangements
