The restaurant became a local favorite with its serve-yourself buffets of Southern cooking, as well as the Tuesday and Friday night jam sessions featuring gospel and country musicians. The Allens were also remembered as a couple the down-and-out could turn to in a moment of desperation. Putnam resident or just someone passing through town, a room for the night or a Christmas dinner: it didn’t matter. Sometimes a deputy or police officer would drop a person or entire family off late at night. Sometimes they came on their own, guided by word of mouth. Sometimes they worked off their brief room-and-board, sometimes not. “Of course, it might have hurt their reputation some, but they did what they thought was right,” said one man knowledgeable of their activities over the years. “They never got recognition, and they never asked for it. But they helped the kind of people some people might not like to have around.” The restaurant portion of the operation closed a couple of years ago after both the Allens became ill. Mrs. Allen died in April 2005. Prior to settling in Putnam, Allen had just returned from a three-year stint in Bandar Abaas, Iran, where he oversaw the construction of a large copper mine near the Persian Gulf city. Born Jan. 18, 1931, in Robeson, N.C., to Flowers Walters and Roy Sam Allen Sr., Allen grew up to serve in the U.S. Army in Korea and Japan from 1949-1952.
