Terry Reid
Terry Reid, 73, of Eatonton, died Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at Putnam General Hospital. A native of Eatonton, he was born Sept. 5, 1934, a son of the late Murray F. and Willie Maude Carnes of Eatonton. A Korean War veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a graduate of Putnam County schools and a retired salesman for Horton Homes. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Ruth Richardson Reid. Survivors include sons, Charles Joseph Reid and wife Gloria, and James Michael Reid and wife Christy; daughter, Kelly Susanne Reid; grandchildren, Candace Melissa Reid, Christian Elease Reid, Katy Renee Cave-Bigley, Courtney Alexandra Reid and Lily Kay Susanne Reid; mother, Willie Maude Carnes; and brother, Billy Reid. Funeral service was Thursday, April 3 in Vining Ivy Hill Chapel with the Rev. Mike Willard officiating. Interment followed in Eatonton Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Bill Thompson, Philip Etheridge, Chip Walker, Don Anderson, Freddy Godby, Dan Haley and Greg Covington. Honorary pallbearers were Steve Reid, Alan Reid and Eric Reid. Vining Ivy Hill Chapel in Eatonton was in charge of arrangements.

Jeffrey A. Thomas
Jeffrey Alan Thomas, 46, of McDonough and formerly of Griffin, died March 31, 2008. A native of Saginaw, Mich., he was born Sept. 29, 1961 and was a carpenter. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sally Ann Thomas, and two brothers, Billy Thomas and Michael Thomas. Survivors include a son, Ben Thomas of Eatonton; brother, Lee Thomas, sisters, Rene Brown and husband Bill, Michelle Gave and husband Ed, Amy Spaeth and husband Wayne, Leann Thomas and Mike Harrold, Father William Thomas and Alice Plachta, all of Michigan; several nieces and nephews; and those close to his heart, Eloisa, Ala-Michael and Andrew Kelly. Vining Ivy Hill Chapel in Eatonton was in charge of arrangements.

Ann Thurman
Ann Thurman, 76, of Eatonton, died Sunday, April 6, 2008 at her residence. She was daughter of the late Harry and Corinne Schell Dearman. Survivors include her husband, Harry “Tony” Thurman Sr.; daughters, Dorothy Turpen and husband Bob, and Linda Ralston and husband Walker; son, Harry Thurman Jr. and wife Nancy; grandchildren, Chris Thurman, Stacy Thurman, Keith Thurman, Angie Thurman, Walker Ralston, David Ralston and Garrett Ralston; and great-granddaughter, Mia Thurman. Funeral service was Tuesday, April 8 in Vining Ivy Hill Chapel with the Rev. Mike Willard officiating. Interment followed in Pine Grove Cemetery. Vining Ivy Hill Chapel in Eatonton was in charge of arrangements.

Floyd J. Addison
Floyd J. Addison, 68, of Eatonton, died Saturday, March 29, 2008. A native of Atlanta, he had lived in Eatonton since 1992. He was a builder and contractor. Survivors include his wife, Judy McDonald Addison of Eatonton; daughters, Debbie McTyre of Powder Springs, Sandy Cobb of Gray and Vicki Addison of Locust Grove; son, Floyd Addison Jr. of Germany; stepsons, Randy Littlepage of Hapeville and Jimmy Littlepage of Ellenwood; mother, Lorene Cobb of Stockbridge; brothers, Donald Cobb of Ellenwood, Willie Cobb of Griffin, Joe Cobb of Hampton and Jimmy Cobb of Ellenwood; and sister, Evelyn Sullivan of Glostar, Va. Funeral service was Tuesday, April 1 in the chapel of Wards Fairview Memorial Park Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Ledford officiating. Williams Funeral Home and Crematory in Milledgeville was in charge of arrangements.

Edith G. Bruce
Edith Grace Bruce, 80, of Alexander Road in Eatonton, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at Eatonton Health Care. A native of Banks County, she was born Aub. 13, 1927, a daughter of the late Albert G. and May Arwood Shubert. She was an emergency room nurse. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Bruce Sr., in 2005. Survivors include daughters, Gloria Rusk and husband Harold and Diane Knight and husband William, all of Eatonton; grandchildren, William Lynn Callaway, James Harold Rush, Williams Bruce Knight, Robert Hansel Knight, James Casey Knight; great-grandchildren, William Phillip Callaway, Kourtni Elaine Callaway, Thomas James Harold Rusk, Boddie Knight, Austin Knight, Jarod Knight, Jacob Knight; and sisters, Curtis Ann Lunsford, Frances Shaw and Lila Joe Evans. Funeral service was March 28 at Vining Ivy Hill Chapel with the Revs. Frank Bruce and Larry Cook officiating. Interment followed in Pine Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were William L. Callaway, James H. Rusk, Williams Knight, Robert Knight and James Knight. Nephews served as honorary pallbearers. Vining Ivy Hill Chapel in Eatonton was in charge of arrangements.

Arthur Burke
Arthur Burke, 62, recently died. Born Oct. 26, 1945 to the late Henry and Lillian C. Burke, he was a 1964 graduate of Butler-Baker School and member of Henderson Grove Baptist Church. He was also a member of Jefferson Masonic Lodge No. 242, J.H. Walker Consistory No. 14, Masab Temple No. 1 of the Macon District and Superior Chapter No. 160 OES. He was a 14- year employee of Grotec Industry. Survivors include children, Patricia Andrews, Bernadine Burke, Edward Taylor, Henry Lee Burke and Richie Solomon Burke; sisters, Mary Elizabeth Burke, Janie Bell Andrews and husband Lynn, Mary Alice Humphries and Gloria Burke Waller; brothers, Bennie Burke and Sidney Burke; a host of grandchildren; and special friends, Daisy Pearl Reid, Hulon Burke and Sheila Stubbs Farley. Funeral service was March 29 at Henderson Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Willie C. Jones officiating. Interment followed in Bethel Cemetery in Eatonton. Bernard’s Family Funeral Care in Eatonton was in charge of arrangements.

Lillian Whitten
Lillian Whitten, 93, of Eatonton, died Sunday, March 30, 2008 at Putnam General Hospital. Daughter of the late J.W. and Ora Alexander Adams, she was a retired licensed practical nurse. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Meyers Whitten, and a daughter, Frieda Jones. Survivors include a son, Frank Whitten and wife Joan of Eatonton; daughter, Lyn Clark and husband Bill of Eatonton; sister, Ina L. Bell of Oxford, Miss.; seven grandchildren, Lisa, Camille, Amie, Ken, Tracy, Kelli and Keith; eight great-grandchildren, Houston, Tyler, Caroline, Cassie, Meagan, Trevor, Natalie and Jessica; and one great-great-grandchild, Madison Rose Morrow. Graveside service will be held Saturday, April 5 at Forest Hill Midtown in Memphis, Tenn. Memorial service in Eatonton will be announced. Vining Ivy Hill Chapel in Eatonton was in charge of local arrangements.

Eloise C. Folds
Eloise Cox Folds, 77, of Eatonton, died Tuesday, April 1, 2008. She was a native of Cumming and was preceded in death by a son, Gary Folds. Survivors include her husband, Bobeddy Folds of Eatonton; daughter, Brenda Storey of Sugar Hill; daughter-in-law, Debbie Folds of Snellville; sisters-in-law, Joeann Wright of Atlanta and Tricia Cox of Loganville; grandchildren, Kevin Storey, Jenny Storey, Kipley Morrow, Charles Morrow, Shannon Lightcap, Jim Lightcap and Matt Folds; great-grandchildren, Amber, Zoe, Taylor, Devin, Peyton, Ansley and Chase; nieces and nephews, Donna Puckett, Mike Puckett, Cyndi Cox, Terri Hamilton, Glen Hamilton and Keith Wright. Graveside service is at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 3 at Memory Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2 p.m., Thursday at Moores Funeral Home in Milledgeville.

Nell K. Thompson
Nell Kate Robertson Thompson, 81, of Greensboro and formerly of Tallapoosa, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at Willow Run Retirement Home. Born Aug. 10, 1926 in Haralson County, she was the daughter of the late Curtis Wilson Robertson and Annie Worthy Lyle Robertson. She graduated from Tallapoosa High School and Georgia State University. During her working career, she worked as a secretary for Johnson & Johnson-McNeil Laboratories and Edward’s Baking Company. As a young adult she was a member of Riverside Baptist Church in Tallapoosa and later was a member of Avondale First Baptist Church for 20 years. She had made her home at Willow Run Retirement Home since March 2007. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil William Thompson, in 1956 and a son, Kenneth Leon "Camo" Thompson. Survivors include a daughter, Pat Walker of Juno Beach, Fla.; two sons, William Michael Thompson and wife Cheri of Buckhead and Robert Steven Thompson and wife Terry of Eatonton; three sisters, Elizabeth Robertson of Eatonton, Anne Van Tassell of Eatonton and Martha Akins of Dahlonega; a brother, Bob Robertson of Carrollton; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral service was Friday, March 21 at McCommons Chapel in Greensboro with the Rev. Ira McKeever officiating. Serving as pallbearers were Ryan Thompson, Lee Sims, Steven Thompson, Bo Walker and Dusty Walker. Interment service was Saturday, March 22 at Riverside Baptist Church Cemetery in Tallapoosa. The family requests that memorials be made to Parkinson Research Foundation, Inc., Attention: Michael/Gift Processing, 420 Beach Road, P. O. Box 20256, Sarasota, Fla. 34276. McCommons Funeral Home in Greensboro was in charge of arrangements.

Collous M. Wilson
Collous M. Wilson, 35, died Monday, March 17, 2008. He was born May 6, 1972 to Rosa M. and the late Samuel P. Wilson Sr. He attended Walker High School and worked with Progressive Builders. After his father’s 1994 death, he cared for his mother in their southeast Atlanta home. Survivors include his mother, Rosa M. Wilson; brother, Samuel P. Wilson Jr. and wife Autumn; grandmother, Grace Smith; nieces, Amber D. Wilson and Samara G. Wilson; sister-in-law, Donna Wilson; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and dear friends.

Willard A. Combs Sr.
Willard Arthell Combs Sr., 58, of Eatonton, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008. A native of Sweetwater, Tenn., he was born April 1, 1949 to the late Williams J.W. and Stella Mae Combs. Survivors include his wife, Juanita Combs; children, Williard Arthell Combs Jr. and Kenneth Roylee Combs, both of Danielsville, Tickisha Combs Fournier and husband Roger and Julius William Combs and Cassey D. Combs, all of Eatonton; grandchildren, Colby Sinclair Fournier and Gracie Michelle Combs; sisters, Wanda Judd, Kay Fish and Bernice O’Kelley; and brothers, Wayne Combs and Wendell Combs. Funeral service was Friday, March 7 at Vining Ivy Hill Chapel. Vining Ivy Hill Chapel in Eatonton was in charge of arrangements.

Alfred M. Hoyle Sr.
Alfred McGrady Hoyle Sr., 83, of Eatonton, died Thursday, March 13, 2008 at his home. Born Aug. 23, 1924 in Henderson, N.C., he was one of 15 children born to the late Ernest Edward Hoyle and Mary Faulkner Hoyle. He graduated from Burlington High School in Burlington, N.C. in 1943 and attended Morningside College and Elon College. During World War II, he served his country in the European Theater in the U.S. Army. He worked as the senior staff of computer technology at AT&T, formerly Lucent Technologies, retiring in the spring of 1975 after 26 years. While living in Palm Coast, Fla., he was a volunteer on the fire department and also served as the president. He was the project coordinator for the sanctuary addition to Trinity Presbyterian Church and the sound engineer for the church. He was president of the Palm Coast YMCA. Four years ago, he moved to Eatonton to be closer to family in Greensboro. He was a member of Lake Oconee Presbyterian Church in Eatonton. He was preceded in death by siblings, Rosa Robinson, Edward A. Hoyle, Sr., Earl T. Hoyle, Robert B. Hoyle, Ernest W. Hoyle, Henry T. Hoyle and Vernon G. Hoyle. Survivors included his wife, Catherine Gammon Hoyle of Eatonton; son, Alfred McGrady Hoyle Jr. and wife Connie of Greensboro; siblings, Catherine Michael of Burlington, N.C., Ruth Qualls of Burlington, N.C., Pauline Tate of Elon, N.C., Bertha Mullins of Cincinnati, Ohio, Bobby A. Hoyle of Virginia Beach, Va., Beacham H. Hoyle of Burlington, N.C., Paul Hoyle of Elon, N.C.; sister-in-law, Ruth Dempsey Hoyle; two grandchildren, Scott Kevin Hoyle and wife Amy of Duluth and Kelly Amanda Fuller and husband Mark of Eatonton; great-grandchildren, Matthew and Elijah; step grandson, Noah; and scores of nieces and nephews. Memorial service was Saturday, March 15 at Lake Oconee Presbyterian Church in Eatonton with Rev. Dr. Joe King officiating. Internment followed at Walker Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Lake Oconee Presbyterian Church, 113 Scott Road, Eatonton, GA 31024 or Hospice Care Options, 811 N. Cobb Street, Suite 3, Milledgeville, GA 31061. McCommons Funeral Home in Greensboro was in charge of arrangements.

Charles Strong
Charles Strong, 70, of Eatonton, died Friday, March 14, 2008 at his home. Son of the late Comer Strong and Amanda Reecer Strong, he was born on Jan. 21, 1938 in Moss, Tenn. He attended high school in Westfield and Noblesville, Ind. At age 18, he went to work for Ford Motor Company as a pipe fitter retiring in 1989 after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 115 in Westfield, Ind. and served in the National Guard Reserves. He moved to Eatonton in 2000 to be closer to children and their families. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mavoureene Jo Lutz Strong, and a brother, Adam Strong. Survivors include two daughters, Debby Stephens of Greensboro and Lori Cherry and husband Brad of Rutledge; son, Allen Strong and wife Beth of Ringgold; three brothers, Gib Strong of Noblesville, Ind., Tom Strong of Noblesville, Ind. and Bo Strong and wife Betty of Murray, Ken.; six grandchildren, Eric Strong, Emi Strong, Nichole Stephens Wilkerson, Jenny Jenkins, Tabitha Cherry and Bronson Cherry; and a number of other relatives and friends. Memorial service was Wednesday, March 19 at McCommons Chapel in Greensboro. The family requests that memorials be made to Abbey Hospice, 215 Azalea Court, Social Circle, GA 30025 or American Cancer Society, 1684 Barnett Shoals Road, Athens, GA 30605. Joseph Nelson
Joseph “Bro” Nelson, 92, died Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at Eatonton Health Care Rehabilitation Center. A Putnam County native, he was born June 10, 1915 to the late Marshall and Cornelia W. Nelson. Educated in Putnam County Schools, he was a former dairyman and member of New Providence and Home Union Lodge No. 1. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lessie Mae Nelson; daughter, Katie Nelson; and 12 siblings. Survivors include children, Callie M. Nelson of Atlanta, Sidney Nelson and wife Willie Mae of Eatonton, Willie M. Nelson of Chicago, Ill., Shirley A. Maxie of Long Beach, Cal., Joseph Nelson Jr. and wife Betty of St. Petersburg, Fla., Leon Nelson and wife Helen of Eatonton, Annie Humphries, Diane Crutchfield and husband Willie, Hazel Parks and husband Prince, Rose Nelson and husband Johnny, Mary Nelson, Lucy Little and husband Sidney, all of Eatonton, Rand Humphries and wife Dianne of Atlanta, Bobby Nelson and wife Stephanie of White Plains; sister, Ada Nelson; two brothers, Walter Nelson and wife Willie Kate, Robert Nelson and wife Betsy; companion, Linda Humphries; 43 great- and great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral service was March 9 at Greater Bell’s Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Gregory Ellison officiating. Interment followed in East Eatonton Cemetery. Grandsons and nephews served as pallbearers. Granddaughters and nieces served as flower bearers. Putnam Memorial Funeral Home in Eatonton was in charge of arrangements.

Teresa M. Thompkins
Teresa Marcia Thompkins, 42, of Eatonton, died Sunday, March 9, 2008 after a battle with multiple sclerosis. Born July 10, 1965 at Hugh Spalding Hospital in Atlanta, she was a daughter of Walter and Eva Thompkins. A 1983 graduate of Murphy High School in Atlanta, she attended Brown Business Institute and took classes through The Salvation Army. She was employed by Piedmont Theatre, Shenanigan’s and Rich’s Distribution Center in Atlanta. She returned to Putnam County in 1999 and joined Lifeline Bible Baptist Church after having been a member of Thankesford Baptist Church and Holly Temple in Atlanta. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Willie and Rosa Scott and Walter Thompkins. Survivors include a son, Jamal Lewis Dean; parents, Walter and Eva Thompkins; grandmother, Verlie Mae Thompkins; three brothers, Ricky Thompkins and wife Carole, Eric Thompkins and wife Erica, all of Eatonton, and Bruce Thompkins of Stone Mountain; sister, Suwana Thompkins of Atlanta; grandson, Brooks Andrews; aunt, Willa Mae Thompkins of Eatonton; four uncles, Willie Scott and wife Ann, James Scott and wife Rose, all of Eatonton, Joseph Scott and wife Loretta of Macon and Tommy Scott of Atlanta; special friend, Yul Dean; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral service was March 15 at Union Baptist Church with Elder Jesse Porter and the Rev. Ozzie Hanson officiating. Interment followed in East Eatonton Cemetery. Brothers and cousins served as pallbearers. Cousins also served as flower bearers. Putnam Memorial Funeral Home of Eatonton was in charge of arrangements.

Alfredia Harris
Alfredia Harris, one of 18 children, wa sborn Feb. 22, 1938 in Eatonton. She was the daughter of Hudson Bly and Fannie M. Daniel, who both preceded her in death. Alfredia entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008.
She received her education in Putnam County. She was a faithful and devoted member of Union Baptist Church until her health began to decline. She always greeted friends and strangers with a warm and genuine smile. As a Christian, she exercised her faith in showing perseverance and endurance while carrying her cross as we all must do. She was a faithful wife, nurturing mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and she also had a very special relationship with al lof her sons- in-law. She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband Peter L. Harris Sr., son Tyrone L. Harris Sr., stepfather Grady Daniel and four brothers.
Survivors include her children, Patricia (Lionel) Reese, Teresa (Samuel) Butts, Tonja (Everette) Andrews, Peter Harris, Eyvette (Calvin) Cole, Sandra Key, Stacy (Michael) Smith and stepson Curtis (Pearl) Dennis; 11 brothers; six sisters; daughter-in-law, Liza Harris; brothers-in-law, Roosevelt Harris and James Harris; cousin, James Bly (Brenda); 22 grandchildren; nine great- grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends..
Funeral service was Thursday, Sept. 18 at Union Baptist Church with Elder Jesse Porter officiating. Interment followed. Grandsons, cousins and friends served as pallbearers. Granddaughters, cousins, friends served as flower bearers. Putnam Memorial Funeral Home in Eatonton was in charge of arrangements.
