James E. Johnson Jr.
James Edward Johnson Jr. was born Dec. 1, 1944. He was the son of James E. Johnson Sr., who preceded him in death and Sarah Odum. He answered the masters call on Monday, Sept. 15, 2008.
He attended Central High School in Cincinnati, Ohio and was a man of many talents, whose employment spanned from interior decorating, meat cutting, to bank teller, fishing and the list goes on. He enjoyed life and lived each day joyously. He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Odum and stepfather, Marion Odum.
Those left to mourn his passing are his mother, Sarah Odum of Eatonton; children, James Johnson III and Orlando Johnson both of Los Angeles, Calif., Tiama Johnson, Lakeisha Johnson, Felicia Johnson and Monty Johnson all of Cincinnati, Ohio; five sisters, Sarah B. Hunter and Jane Bailey both of Cincinnati, Ohio, Millis Mitchell of Eatonton, Barbara Ann Edwards and Peggy Ann Wenchel both of Detroit, Mich.; uncle, James Walker of Cincinnati, Ohio; eighteen grandchildren; special friends, Ronnie Mullins, Joe Frost and Jackie Ware both of Cincinnati, Ohio and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral service was Monday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. at Ulysses Rice Memorial Chapel, Putnam Memorial Funeral Home with Pastor James Kilgore officiating. Pallbearers and flower bearers were family members and friends. Putnam Memorial Funeral Home of Eatonton was in charge of arrangements.

Sara K. Jones
Sara Sue Kellum Jones, 82, of Eatonton, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008 at Athens Regional Hospital. Jones was a native of Elbert County and moved to Eatonton in 1970. In Elberton, she was a member of Fortsonia Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School for many years and was an active choir member. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Eatonton.
She was preceded in death by her husband Wylie Jones. She was also preceded in death by her parents George Kellum and Victoria Ray Kellum, and all of her siblings.
Survivors include her children, Dolores Jones Ellis (Jim) of Alpharetta, Ronney Jones (Ginger) of Eatonton and Penny Jones Cardwell (Howell) of Eatonton. She was blessed with seven grandchildren, Jamie Ellis McKinley (Cory), Drew Jones, Jodi Ellis, Kelly Jones McBurnett (Ryan), Brandon Cardwell, Mallory Cardwell and Emily Jones and two great-grandchildren, Rylee McBurnett and Nathan McKinley. Funeral service was Saturday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Eatonton with the Rev. Bill Kitchen officiating.
Pallbearers were Drew Jones, Brandon Cardwell, Bradly Carswell, Ennis Lankford, Greg Covington, Tony Clack, Ryan McBurnett and Cory McKinley. Honorary pallbearers were Richard Marshall, Glenda Ridley, Don Kellum, Bill Sharp, Sammy Walker and Edge Farley.
Vining Ivy Hill Chapel of Eatonton ws in charge of arrangements.

Myrtle Cody Martin
Myrtle Cody Allen, 99, of Oxford, Newton County, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at Abbey Hospice, Social Circle.
Born in Albermarle, N.C., on Dec. 7, 1909, Mrs. Allen was the second of six children of Pierce Monroe and Grace Hadley Cody. She graduated from Albermarle High School and moved to Kannapolis, N.C., to work at Cannon Mills, where she remained employed until marrying John S. Allen in 1941. She continued as a homemaker.
Mrs. Allen volunteered for the PTA and Girl Scouts; and she was a member of the United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and helped with Vacation Bible School.
Her parents and husband are deceased. She leaves a daughter, Anita Fordham; a granddaughter, Amy (Al) Miller; two great-grandsons, Allen and Nolan Miller; three sisters, Lucille Nance, Jewell Madlin and Mary Frances Harris.
The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at First United Methodist Church in Eatonton. Burial is Eatonton Memorial Park. The Rev. Peggy Little officiated. Vining Ivy Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 105 Lower Harmony Road, Eatonton, was in charge of arrangements.

Johnny Edward Brown
Johnny Edward Brown, 57, of Atlanta, a native of Eatonton, died on Sunday, April 12, 2009.
He was born on Dec. 20, 1952, to the late Albert O. Brown and Annie Ruth Brown.
Mr. Brown graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta. He attended Hunter Street Baptist Church, and was an avid outdoors man who enjoyed fishing and camping.
He retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad.
Besides his father, Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth Brown and grandparents Herbert and Bessie Ford.
Besides his mother, survivors include a son, Cedric J. Brown of Atlanta; a sister, Ruth (Lorenzo) Bailey of Houston, TX; an aunt, Shirley (Earnest) Walton of Eatonton; uncles, Randall (Henrietta) Ford and Hubert (Georgia) Ford, both of Decatur, and Peter Crawford of Eatonton; nieces, Laytona (Michael) McClam of Chesapeake, VA, and Tori Lynn Baily of Santa Clara, CA; a granddaughter, Precious Brown; a great-niece, Jasmine McClam; a great-nephew, James McClam; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Union Baptist Church, 240 Martin Luther King Blvd., Eatonton. Pastor Jesse Porter will officiate. Eulogist will be Apostle Dr. Gus Kilgore.
Putnam Memorial Funeral Home, 105 Agnes Jenkins Drive, Eatonton, is in charge of arrangements.

Willie Bell Hunt Evans
Willie Bell Hunt Evans, 90, of Putnam County, died Friday, April 10, 2009.
Mrs. Evans was educated by the Putnam County School System. She was a member of Free Gift Baptist Church. A native of Putnam County, she was a parent figure to many family members and friends in the community.
Survivors include a sister, Annie Lucy Johnson; and nieces and nephews, Clara Bell (William) Reid, Aronica (David) Ballard, Ann (Jim) Avent, Mark (Valerie) Hurt, Paulette (Hal) Dennis, and Earnest Horne, all of Eatonton, Lizzie Mae (Ike) Carter of Decatur; Gwendolyn Jackson of Lithonia, Terry Johnson of Cincinnati, Cleveland Johnson and Tammy Johnson, both of Covingtion, Andrew (Diane) Johnson and Darin (Dawn) Hurt, both of Atlanta, and Ricky (Valeria) Hurt of Jesup.
Services were held Friday, April 17, at Free Gift Baptist Church. The Rev. L. Solomon officiated. Burial is in Free Gift Church Cemetery. Floral bearers were great nieces and friends. Pallbearers were Tolman Hurt, Cleveland Johnson, Andrew Johnson, Ricky Hurt, Howard Avent and Mark Hurt.
The Hurt & Redd Funeral Home of Eatonton was in charge of arrangements.

Sadie Padgett
Funeral services for Sadie Ann Padgett, 32, formerly of Crawford, were held March 11 in Brandenburg, Ky.
Padgett was a daughter of Tommy and Sue Padgett, Crawford.
A homemaker, she had been living in Kentucky only a couple of weeks.
Survivors, besides her parents, include her husband, John Padgett, formerly of Eatonton.

Mrs. B.E. Gooch
Graveside services were held Monday morning at Eatonton Memorial Park for Mrs. Benjamin E. Gooch, 94 of Cherry Lane, Eatonton, Ga. who died March 13, 1999 at Putnam General Hospital following a lengthy illness. The Rev. Robin Lindsey, pastor of The First United Methodist Church, conducted the final rites.
Mary Gregory Gooch was a native of Putnam County, Ga. the daughter of James Madison Gregory (Senior) and Mattie Little Gregory. She was born and reared in the Rockville area and attended Rockville Academy, the Eatonton High School and graduated from Georgia State College for Women, Milledgeville, Ga. She was the widow of Benjamin E. Gooch. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Town and Country Garden Club.
She is survived by her sister Margaret Gregory Walker (Mrs. S.I.) and 10 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Col. James M. Gregory, Jr., sisters Mrs. Inez G. Stribling and Mrs. Dorothy G. Manley.
Pallbearers were Steve Gregory, Powell Griffith, Powell Griffith III, Larry Manley, Jim Gregory and Chip Walker.
The family suggests those who would like to donate in memory to send their donations to Rockville Academy, c/o Rosser Lunsford, 456 Rockville Springs Drive, Eatonton, Ga. 31024 or to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund.
Vining Ivy Hill Chapel had charge of arrangements.

Roylene P. Miller
Funeral services were held Monday, March 1 at Simmons Funeral Home Chapel in Madison for Roylene P. Miller, 62, of 124 Parks Mill Drive in Buckhead, Ga. who died February 27, 1999 at Morgan Memorial Hospital. The Rev. Clay Jacobs conducted the final rites.
A native of Laurens County, Ga. she was the daughter of Roy Pope and Ada Lee Wasden Pope. She was married to Lawton F. Miller, who survives her.
By profession an artist, Roylene Pope Miller was a graduate of Famous Artists School and worked as a commercial artist and sang in the Pope Family Group in Dublin, Ga., she also worked as a model and was fond of animals. She was a resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico for 33 years, retiring to Buckhead in 1991.
She is survived by her widower and a son Richard Miller, San Antonio, Texas, a brother Harry Pope, Dublin, sisters Mrs. Jean Davidson, Dublin and Mrs. Phyllis Johnson, Jacksonville, FL and several nieces and nephews.
The family suggests, for those who wish, may donate memorial contributions to the Humane Society of Morgan County.
Simmons Funeral Home of Madison had charge of arrangements.
