JAMES SCHRUDDER

James "Jim" Schurdder, 91, of Bryant, Ala., died Aug. 8, 2004. He was a retired carpenter, homebuilder and cabinetmaker; a retired school bus driver of 34 years for Jackson County Schools and was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church. Schrudder was preceded in death by wife Juanita Schrudder. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Mickey and Marie Schrudder, Bryant, Ala.; daughter and son-in-law Betty Jo and Bill Sims, Bryant, Ala.; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Aug. 10 in Moore Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Townson and Edd McKinney officiating. Interment was in Ebenezer Cemetery. Arrangements were by Moore Funeral Home in Bryant, Ala.

REED SMITH

Reed Smith, 62, of Henagar, Ala., died Aug. 7, 2004 at his residence. Smith was preceded in death by father Reed Smith and sister Melba Osborne. Survivors include wife Linda Smith, Henagar, Ala.; daughter and son-in-law Karen and Dennis Dunn, Grant, Ala.; son and daughter-in-law Randell and Christy Smith, Trenton; grandchildren Jacob, Kayla, Logan and Christopher Smith; mother Willie Abney, Rainsville, Ala.; brothers Coy McKenzie and Clyde Osborne, Henagar, Ala., Melvin Osborne, Rosalie, Ala., Kelly Smith, Kimball, Tenn.; sister Beverly Decker, Jasper, Tenn.; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services were held Aug. 10 in Corner Stone Chapel with the Rev. Bruce "Sonny" Smith officiating. Interment was in Concord Cemetery. Arrangements were by Corner Stone Funeral Chapel in Ider, Ala.

ROLANDO GORENA

Rolando "Ron" Gorena, 66, of Wilmington, N.C., died Aug. 17, 2004 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born on April 29, 1938 in Edinburg, Texas. Gorena was preceded in death by parents Santos Gorena Jr., and Eutimia Gorena. Survivors include wife Sharon Gorena, daughters Cristina Kelley and Alexis Renee, brother Roel Gorena, and sisters Vilma Guinn and Dahlia Tripp. A memorial service was held on Aug. 31 at the Pine Valley United Methodist Church with the Rev. William Braswell and the Rev. David Glassmire officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to Pine Valley United Methodist Church, 3788 Shipyard Blvd., Wilmington, N.C. 28403, American Cancer Society, 930-B Wellness Dr., Greenville, N.C. 27834 or the Humane Society, 2405 N. 23rd Street, Wilmington, N.C. 28401. Arrangements were by Coble Ward-Smith Funeral and Cremation Services Oleander Chapel in Wilmington, N.C.

EUNICE JOHNSON

Eunice Jewell Koger Johnson, 90, of Rossville died Sept. 2, 2004 at her daughter's residence in Woodstock. She was the youngest of 10 children, was born on July 26, 1914 on Lookout Mountain to William and Jennie Koger. She graduated from Dade County High School in 1934 as valedictorian of her class. She continued her education at Berry College where she graduated in 1939. She retired from the Walker County School System. She was a member of the South Rossville Baptist Church. Johnson was preceded in death by husband Roy Johnson and daughter Mary Douglas. Survivors include son James Johnson, Conyers; daughters Martha Ashburn, Woodstock, Betty Hudson, Acworth, Nelda Mahlin, Ashville, NC.; sister Edith Slaughter, Hixson, Tenn.; brother Robert Koger, Houston, Texas; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Sept. 5 in South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff Daniels and the Rev. Eddie Rushing officiating. Interment was in Lakewood Memory Gardens South Memorial Park. Arrangements were by Lane Funeral Home in Rossville.

LEONARD MCKAIG

Leonard Lester McKaig, 84, of New Salem died Sept. 5, 2004. He was retired from Combustion Engineering. He was a charter member of the New Salem Community Club, fire department and neighborhood watch. He was also a charter member of New Salem Baptist Church where he served as a trustee, Sunday school teacher, and on the missions board. McKaig was preceded in death by parents Drew and Virginia McKaig, sisters Blanch Jones and Etta Autry, and brother Monroe McKaig. Survivors include wife Helen McKaig; daughters Janice McKaig and Judy Allen, Frankford, Ky., Sandra McKaig, New Salem; sons Lester McKaig, Rainsville, Ala., John McKaig, Frankford, Ky., Tim McKaig, Biloxi, Miss., Jerry McKaig, New Salem, Joseph McKaig, Cartersville; sisters Inez Smith and Edna Moore, New Salem; brothers Calvin McKaig, East Ridge, Tenn., Howard McKaig, Trenton; 21 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Sept. 7 in New Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. Lee Moore and Joseph JmcKaig officiating. Interment was in Hawkins Cemetery. Arrangements were by Moore Funeral Home in Trenton.

LOVIE WATKINS

Lovie Jean Watkins, 57, of Bryant, Ala., died Sept. 4, 2004. Watkins was preceded in death by husband Leroy Watkins and father Willis Bowers. Survivors include mother Vergie Porter, Bryant, Ala.; sisters Willie Higgins and Grace Stewart, both of Lewis Chapel, Tenn., Eddie Fox, Higdon, Ala.; brother George Bowers, Bryant, Ala.; several nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held Sept. 6 in Porter Cemetery. Arrangements were by Moore Funeral Home in Bryant, Ala.

DEANNA JENKINS

Deanna Marie Jenkins, 64, of Flat Rock, Ala., died Sept. 30, 2004. She was a member of the Rising Fawn Church of Christ. Survivors include husband George Jenkins, Flat Rock, Ala.; daughters Patricia Palmer, Laura Cooper, and Melissa Daniels, all of Flat Rock, Ala.; sister Sandra Padgett, Defuniak Springs, Fla.; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Oct. 2 in Ryan Funeral Home Chapel with the Minister Don Walker officiating. Interment was in Deerhead Cove Cemetery. Arrangements were by Ryan Funeral Home in Trenton.

EDNA MATHEWS

Edna Mae Mathews, 82, of New Salem died Sept. 27, 2004. She was a lifelong resident of Lookout Mountain, a housewife and a member of the Mount Carmel Baptist Church. Mathews was preceded in death by son Philip Mathews, parents Sam and Louvenia Forester, brother Cecil Forester, and sister Ruby Mathews. Survivors include husband Philip Mathews, several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held today at 2 p.m. in the Moore Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Fred Bradford officiating. Interment will follow in Hawkins Cemetery. Arrangements were by Moore Funeral Home in Trenton.

MATTIE PEEK

Mattie Lou Peek, 83, of the Pisgah Community in Henagar, Ala., died Sept. 30, 2004 at her residence. She was a member of New Home Baptist Church in Pisgah and was a retired schoolteacher with the Jackson County Board of Education. Peek was preceded in death by parents Arnold and Mary Horton Wilson Sr.; husband William Peek Sr.; son William Peek Jr.; sister Ruth Griffin. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Brent and Dean Peek, Scottsboro, Ala.; son Bremon Peek, Pisgah, Ala.; daughter Anne Hamilton, Fort Payne, Ala.; brother Arnold Wilson, Albertville, Ala.; sisters Grave Hodgens, Cornelia, Elizabeth Diorio, Auburn, Ala.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services were held Oct. 2 in Kerby Funeral Home Chapel with the pastor Harry Smith and the pastor David Smith officiating. Interment was in New Home Cemetery. Arrangements were by Kerby Funeral Home in Henagar, Ala.

MARSELL SHARPTON

Marsell Sharpton, 71, of Trenton died Sept. 28, 2004. He was a lifelong resident of Sand Mountain. He was formerly employed at Chattanooga Log and Tool, and W.H. Pullen Lumber Company and the Dade County School System. He was a U.S. Army corporal and a Korean War veteran. He was known throughout the tri-state area as the Peanut Man for his peanuts. He was a regular vendor at many arts and craft festivals. Sharpton was preceded in death by parents A.J. and Cora Sharpton, daughter Lisa Sharpton Lowery and brother J.P. Sharpton. Survivors include wife Vonnie Sharpton; sons and daughter-in-law Rick and Aleeshia Sharpton, Lilburn, Stephen and Elizabeth Bennett, Madison, Ala., Jess and Trish Bennett, Watertown, Tenn., Grady and Kristen Hood, Charleston, S.C.; sons Tim and Scott Sharpton, Chattanooga, Bill Bennett, Scottsboro, Ala.; daughters and sons-in-law Patricia and Paul Wilson, Trenton, Evelyn and Rodger Price, Cleveland, S.C., Betty and David Gamble, Helena, Ala.; sister Emmaline Johnson, Chattanooga; brothers and sisters-in-law John and Dot Sharpton, Trenton, Wendell and Carol Sharpton, Higdon, Ala.; 38 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Oct. 1 in Moore Funeral Home Chapel with Dan Kirkpatrick officiating. Interment was in Lake Hills Memorial Gardens with military honors. Arrangements were by Moore Funeral Home in Trenton.

CLAUDE BAILEY

Claude Arthur Bailey, 78, of Rossville died Nov. 23, 2004 at his residence. He was a native of Fort Payne, Ala., and had lived most of his life in the Rossville area and was of the Baptist faith. He worked for many years at Peerless Woolen Mills and was the owner/operator of Bailey Furniture Exchange in Tiftonia for 32 years. He was a member of the Mountain View Lions Club for several year. Bailey was preceded in death by son Claude Bailey, parents Gus and Bertha Bailey, four brothers and five sisters. Survivors include wife Nadine Bailey, Rossville; daughter-in-law Donna Reed, Chickamauga; sons and daughters-in-law Allen and Karen Bailey, Lookout Mountain, Steven and Amanda Bailey, Chattanooga; grandchildren Shannon and Angie Derryberry, Brian and Eric Bailey, Dustin Reed; great-grandchildren Dalton, Caleb, Savannah, and Tyler; brother M.G. Bailey, Trenton; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Nov. 27 in South crest Chapel with the Rev. Ted Verville officiating. Interment was in Lakewood Memory Gardens South. Memorial contributions can be made to Mission Ridge Baptist Church, 337 Mission Ridge Road, Rossville, Ga., 30741. Arrangements were by South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home in Rossville.

CANDI HOLCOMB

Rae Michelle Candi Holcomb, 35, of Chickamauga, passed away, Nov. 26, 2004. She was a lifelong resident of north Georgia. She was preceded in death by mother Brenda Faye Robertson, father Ray Blackstock, son Jonathan Neal Holcomb and grandmother Margaret Barfield. Survivors include husband Timothy Holcomb; daughter Elizabeth Katelen (Katie) Holcomb; sisters Cathie Leanne Robertson Koop of Ringgold, Brenda Burns of Chickamauga, Kay Hayes of Valley Head, Sharon Barnett and Glenda Tinker both of Trenton; brothers Ray Blackstock, Jr., Chickamauga and Randy Blackstock of Atlanta; grandmother Hazel Blackstock of Savannah; grandfather Paul Barfield of Chickamauga; step-father John Ray Robertson of LaFayette. Funeral services were held Nov. 28 in the Moore Funeral Home Chapel with Reverends Mike Dunwoody and Fred Bradford officiating. Interment was in Deer Head Cove Cemetery. Arrangements by Moore Funeral Home, Trenton.

WILLIAM GADD

William B. Gadd, 74, of Bryant, Ala., passed away Nov. 26, 2004. He was a US Army Veteran and of the Baptist faith. He was proceeded in death by his parents George and Alta Gadd. Survivors include his wife Esther Gadd of Bryant; daughter Teena Gadd of Franklin, Pa.; sons Michael Gadd of Ohio, Daniel Gadd of Bryant, Ala. and Rickey Gadd of Albany, Ga.; nine grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Nov. 29 in the chapel of Moore Funeral Home with Reverend Wayne Winters officiating. Interment was in the National Cemetery in Chattanooga, Tenn. Arrangements were by Moore Funeral Home, Bryant, Ala.

JOHN GUINN

John Guinn, 82, of Dutton, died Nov. 28, 2004 at Jackson County Hospital. Survivors include wife Joan Guinn of Dutton, Ala., daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Paul Simmons, LaFayette; and friend Kenneth H. Day of Dutton, Ala. Graveside funeral services were held Nov. 29 at the Pleasant View cemetery in Dutton, Ala. with the Rev. Lee Earl Thompson officiating. Arrangements by Kerby Funeral Home, Henagar, Ala.

MARILYN ROLLINGS

Marilyn White Rollings, 55, of Flat Rock, Ala., died Nov. 22, 2004 in Huntsville, Ala. She was employed with Shaw Industries of Trenton for 32 years. Rollings was preceded in death by mother Imogene Weldon White. Survivors include father and step-mother Gordon and Virginia White, Henagar, Ala.; son Brian Goolesby, Pisgah, Ala.; daughter and son-in-law Karen and Bill Owens, Henagar, Ala.; brother Wallace White, Rainsville, Ala.; sisters and brothers-in-law Cathy and W.L. Dalton, Rainsville, Ala., Christie and Jimmy McArthur, Fort Oglethorpe; four grandchildren. Funeral services were held Nov. 25 in Kerby Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Watson Williams and the Dr. Billy Goolesby officiating. Interment was in Lacy's Chapel Cemetery. Arrangements were by Kerby Funeral Home in Henagar, Ala.

VIRGINIA SCOTT

Virginia L. Scott, 83, of Flat Rock, Ala., died Nov. 23, 2004. She was a member of Ownbey Chapel Seventh Day Adventist Church. Scott was preceded in death by parents Arthur and Minnie Gregory and step-father Anthony Reiling. Survivors include her husband Louis Scott, Flat Rock, Ala.; daughters Elaine Hayden, Fyffe, Ala., Renee Hertenstein, McKinney, Texas; son Patrick Coffey, Homestead, Ala.; sister Pauline Becker, Tyler, Texas; brothers Harold and Arthur Gregory, both of Tempe Fla., Carroll Gregory, Mt. Vernon, Ill., Donald Gregory, Decatur, Ill.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Nov. 26 in Moore Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was in Floral Crest Cemetery. Arrangements were by Moore Funeral Home in Bryant, Ala.

REUBIN BEENE

Reubin Beene, 81, of Rising Fawn died Feb. 17, 2005 at Crowne Health Care and Rehab in Fort Payne, Ala., Funeral services were held Feb. 19 in Valley Head Chapel. Interment was in Beene Cemetery. Arrangements were by Burt Funeral Home in Fort Payne, Ala.

BURRELL CASTLEBERRY

Burrell Castleberry, 71, of Trenton died Feb. 15, 2005. He was of the Baptist faith. Castleberry was retired from Hudson Wire Company. He was preceded in death by daughter Debra Ann Castleberry and parents Lenny S. and Dorothy Castleberry. Survivors include wife of 53 years Katherine Castleberry of Trenton; daughter Carolyn Goins of Trenton; sons Vernon L. Castleberry and Donald R. Castleberry both of Trenton; sister Susie Bratton of Cleveland, Tenn.; brothers Alvin Castleberry of Trenton, and Carl Castleberry of Chattanooga, six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Feb. 18 in the Ryan Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Castleberry officiating. Interment was in Trenton Baptist Cemetery. Arrangements were by Ryan Funeral Home in Trenton.
