Kayla Marie Smith

Miss Kayla Marie Smith, 7, of Rt. 1, Pearson, Ga., passed away Saturday, September 6, 2003, at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas, Ga., from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Kayla, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was born February 21, 1996, the daughter of Susan Smith and Michael Jeffery Stone. She was a second grade student at Pearson Elementary School and attended church at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include: mother, Susan Smith of Pearson, Ga.; father, Michael Jeffery Stone of Brunswick, Ga.; four sisters, Brittany Westmoreland, Jennifer Martinez, Hope Stone, and Kristen Stone, all of Pearson, Ga.; maternal grandmother, Teresa Smith of Pearson, Ga.; paternal grandparents, Jim Bo and Lou Dean Wooten of Douglas, Ga.; paternal grandfather, Bobby Stone of Tampa, Fla.; paternal great-grandmother, Louell Bowen of Willacoochee, Ga.; several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services for Kayla were held at 3 p.m., Thursday, September 11, 2003, at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, with Rev. Lonnie Spikes officiating. Special musical selections, "Go Rest High on That Mountain," "Holes in the Floor of Heaven," and "Streets of Heaven," were offered by tape. Debra Sugg, pianist, played soft hymns for the prelude and postlude. Interment followed in Sunnyside Cemetery, with "Candle in the Wind" and "Help Pour Out the Rain" played by tape at the graveside.

Active pallbearers were Talmadge Smith, Jr., Hubert Smith, Greg Wilson, and Aaron Wilson.

Relihan Funeral Home of Pearson, Ga., was in charge of the arrangements.

Evelyn L. McElroy Lee

Mrs. Evelyn L. McElroy Lee, 90, of St. Mary's, Ga., passed away Wednesday morning, August 27, 2003, at Camden Medical Center in St. Mary's following a brief illness.

Mrs. Lee, a native of Turner County, Ga., was the daughter of the late Julius Clifford McElroy, Sr., and the late Leecy Gordy McElroy. She had lived in Coffee County in the Ambrose area for many years, prior to moving to St. Mary's, was the widow of the late John H. "Pat" Lee, and was a member of the College Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include: one sister, Doris Grantham of Kingsland, Ga.; several nieces and nephews, Patricia Allen of St. Mary's, Ga., Kathryn Crews of Yulee, Fla., Tracie Sheffield of Jacksonville, Fla., Larry McElroy of Nicholls, Ga., Dr. Gerald Sapp of Tifton, Ga., Gail Gaskins and Joyce Harper, both of Ambrose, Ga., Gloria Hutto; Johnny McElroy, Pauline Merritt, Virginia Griffin, and Louise Ward, all of Douglas, Ga., Billy Bray of Blackshear, Ga.; several great-nieces and nephews, Carrie Crews of Tampa, Fla., Felicia Sherrod, Kennau Hutto, and Tammy Douglas, all of Douglas, Ga., Jim McElroy, Stanley McElroy, and Clifford McElroy, all of Nicholls, Ga., Brian Crews of Yulee, Fla., Gary Allen, Jr. and Rodney Sheffield, both of Kingsland, Ga.; one great-great niece, Mercedes Allen of Kingsland, Ga.; one great-great nephew, Gary Allen, III, of Kingsland, Ga.; and other relatives. Mrs. Lee was preceded in death by one nephew, Jimmy Fay McElroy.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 30, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Ricketson Funeral Home, with Rev. Stephen P. Hart, Sr., officiating. Prelude and postlude of soft hymns, as well as "In The Garden," during the services were rendered by the pianist, Phyllis V. Ricketson. Interment followed in the Griffin Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Ben Grooms, Jason Grooms, Brian Crews, Gary Allen, Jr., Bobby Crews, and Gary Allen, III.

Members of the Lydia Sunday School class of College Avenue Baptist Church served as honorary pallbearers.

Lester Lee McLeod

Mr. Lester Lee McLeod, 90, of McRae, Ga., passed away September 9, 2003.

Mr. McLeod, a lifelong resident of Telfair County, was the son of the late Marvin and Carrie McDuffie McLeod. He was the widower of Ruth Best McLeod was a retired truck driver from Roydon Wear, Inc., of McRae, and was also a member of McRae Church of God.

Survivors include: four daughters, Mildred Strom and husband, Rudolph, of Douglas, Ga., Hazel Brown and husband, Dorsey, of McRae, Ga., Shirley Leggett and husband, Ronald, of Alamo, Ga., and Zelda Seabolt and husband, L.S., of Helena, Ga; nine grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren. Mr. McLeod was preceded in death by one son, Clois McLeod.

Services were held on Thursday, September 11, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Lowe's Funeral Home in Helena, Ga., with the Rev. Thelma Norris Henderson and Rev. Randall Horne officiating. Interment followed in the Telfair Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers were Michael Seabolt, Greg Seabolt, Rodney Strom, Casey Strom, Johnny Tribble, and Gerald White.

Lowe's Funeral Home of Helena, Ga., was in charge of all arrangements.

Dorothy Ricketson Caven

Mrs. Dorothy Ricketson Caven, 78, of Warner Robins, Ga., passed away Thursday evening, September 4, 2003, at Houston Medical Center in Warner Robins, Ga., following a brief illness.

Mrs. Caven, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was the daughter of the late William Ricketson and the late Lola Mae McCook Ricketson. She was a retired transportation specialist from Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include: her husband, James C. Caven of Warner Robins, Ga.; four daughters, Diana C. Reynolds and Donna Ellis, both of Warner Robins, Ga., Joanna C.Amos of Centerville, Ga., and Vicki C. Shepherd of Lizella, Ga.; one son, Raymond A. Caven of Warner Robins, Ga.; three sisters, Eula Giddens of Brunswick, Ga., Nellie Mae Soles of Woodbine, Ga., and Wilma McLeod of Louisville, Ky.; one sister-in-law, Gracelyn Martin of Macon, Ga.; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Monday morning, September 8, 2003, at 11 a.m., at the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home in Warner Robins, Ga., with Rev. Joseph Howell and Rev. Jeff Poole officiating. Entombment followed in the Magnolia Park Cemetery Mausoleum in Warner Robins.

Juanita Roberson Vickers

aMrs. Juanita Roberson Vickers, 81, of Raccoon Bridge Road, Douglas Ga., passed away Thursday, September 11, 2003, at home following an extended illness.

Mrs. Vickers, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was born January 15, 1922, the daughter of the late Thomas Lattimore and Etta Mae Frost Roberson. She had retired after 22 years from the Coffee County School System (lunchroom manager, Satilla Elementary School) and was a member of Douglas First Baptist Church.

Survivors include: her husband, Allen Vickers of Douglas, Ga.; one son, Steve Vickers of Douglas, Ga.; two daughters, Peggy Slocumb of Valdosta, Ga., and Bonnie Kirkland of Douglas, Ga.; four sisters, Duncan Hutto, Quinelle Russell, and Blanche McClendon, all of Douglas, Ga., and Wilma Janzoski of Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, I. J. Roberson of Douglas, Ga.; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild.

Funeral services were held Saturday, September 13, 2003, at 2 p.m., at the Chapel of Sims Funeral Home, with Rev. Larry Stone and Rev. John Thomas officiating. The New Harmony Singers sang "Beulah Land" and "Go Rest High On That Mountain." Also, a special taped selection of "Wind Beneath My Wings" was provided. Lois Mills, pianist, provided soft music for the prelude and postlude. Burial followed in the Satilla Gardens Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Kenny Adams, Donnie Hurst, Kevin Peterson, Joe Willis, Carl Slocumb, Jr., and Sid Adams.

Roy B. Neugent

Mr. Roy B. Neugent, 73, of Douglas, Ga., passed away Friday evening, September 5, 2003, at Coffee Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.

Mr. Neugent, a native of Atkinson County, Ga., was the son of the late Johnnie Neugent. He was a retired truck driver a U.S Army veteran, and a member of the first Baptist Church. Survivors include: Six sons, Bartley T. Neugent of Willacoochee, Ga., Roy Randy Neugent of Tampa, Fla.,

Harvey Stanley Neugent of Douglas, Ga., Roy Lee Neugent, Jeffrey Glenn Neugent, and Bryan Vickers Neugent, all of Savannah, Ga.; mother, Bessie Vickers Neugent of Willacoochee, Ga.; one sister, June Overton and husband, Richard III, of Goldsburg, S.C.;one Brother, Terrell Neugent of Milton, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Mr. Neugent was preceded in death by one brother, John Vickers Neugent.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 9, 2003, at 1 p.m., at the Chapel of Ricketson Funeral Home, with Rev. Shep Johnson and Rev. Kevin Smith officiating.

Special musical selections, include "Amazing Grace" and "I'll Meet You in the Morning", were rendered by the Guitarist Bill Musgrove and Becky Jowers, with Tommy Lindsey accompaning on the base fiddle and John Spivey, on the harmonica.

The interment followed in the Arna Cemetery in Atkinson County.

Active pallbearer were Phillip Neugent, Jay Neugent, Corey Carver, Oliver Waldron, Randy Tucker, Joe Day, and John Deems.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the adult Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church and members of the Bingo partners of the Senior citizens group.

Annie Day McGovern Kent Castleberry

Mrs. Annie Day McGovern Kent Castleberry, 80, of Albany, Ga., passed away Friday, September 12, 2003, at home following an extended illness.

Mrs. Castleberry, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was born February 1, 1923, the daughter of the late Ben Levi and Cora Lee Carver Patton. She was a homemaker, widow of the late John Castleberry, and a member of Beacon Baptist Church, Albany, Ga.

Survivors include: two daughters, Jerri Reynolds of Albany, Ga., and Jackie Roberts of Denton, Ga.; two sons, Don Day of Shreveport La., and Gene McGovern of Edison, Ga.; two brothers, Rufus Patton of Douglas, Ga., and Jimmy Fussell of Pearson, Ga.; one sister, Sue Brown of Pearson, Ga.; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday, September 14, 2003, 2 p.m., at Bethany Holiness Baptist Church near Ambrose, Ga., with Rev. Kenneth Mathews officiating. June Merritt and Carolyn Thompson sang "Beulah Land" and "Precious Memories," with Lois Mills accompanying at the piano. Also, a taped selection of "Holes In The Floor of Heaven" was provided. Burial followed at the Bethany Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Scott Bowden, Ronnie Bowden, Steve Brown, Pat Brown, Carlton Patton, and Wendell Patton.

Martha Giddens Long

Mrs. Martha Giddens Long, 90, of Rt. 1, Pearson, Ga., passed away Monday, September 8, 2003, at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas, Ga., following an extended illness.

Mrs. Long, a native of Coffee County that is now Atkinson County, Ga., was born March 5, 1913, the daughter of Rev. Teedom and Beadie Burch Giddens. She was a homemaker, a member of Sunnyside Freewill Baptist Church, and the widow of Johnnie Long.

Survivors include: two daughters, Opal Hodges of Jacksonville, Fla., and Betty Coley and husband, W.L., of Douglas, Ga.; three sons, John Long and wife, Betty of Nicholls, Ga., Carswell Long and wife, Teresa, of Orange Park, Fla., and Bobby Long and wife, Jean, of Tallahassee, Fla.; one brother, A.K. Giddens of Waycross, Ga.; four sisters, Elizann Clement and Leona Lewis, both of Pearson, Ga., Cora Belle Pafford of Jacksonville, Fla., and Dorothy McClean of Alma, Ga.; 13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m., Wednesday, September 10, 2003, at Sunnyside Freewill Baptist Church, with Rev. Sim Youngblood and Rev. Charles Williams officiating. Special music included "Just One Rose Will Do" rendered by soloist Melvin McKinnon and "Beulah Land" rendered by the Freewill Ambassadors (Mac McClendon, Tommy Deems, and Mitchell Deems), with Lilla Deems accompanying at the piano. Pianist Lilla Deems provided soft music for the prelude and postlude. Interment followed in Sunnyside Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were grandchildren: David Long, Robbie Long, David Coley, John Long, Jr., Anthony Long, Thomas Hodges, John Long, Lou Long, Paula Hutchinson, Rhonda Coley, Tina Royals, and Janice Hodges.

Honorary pallbearers were Teddy Burch, Henry McKinnon, Ashley McKinnon, Anthony McKinnon, Housan McGovern, Henry McGovern, Michael Swails, and Dr. David Arnett.

Sara Brown Ragland Tate

Mrs. Sara Brown Ragland Tate, 83, of Douglas, Ga., passed away Sunday, July 27, 2003, at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas, Ga.

Mrs. Tate, a native of Stewart County, Ga., was born November 16, 1919, the daughter of the late Milford and Emma Trammell Brown. She had been a resident of Douglas since 1995. She was the widow of the late Harold Ragland and the late Robert L. Tate. A graduate of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and the University of Georgia, she was the home demonstration agent for Colquitt County, Ga., for 25 years and was named Woman of the Year for Moultrie, Ga., in 1964.

Survivors include: one son, Wayne Ragland and wife, Cindy, of Hazlehurst, Ga.; one daughter, Emmagene D'Angelo and husband, Samuel, of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister, Mrs. Riley Jordan of Valdosta, Ga.; one brother, Charles Brown of Sylvester, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Lee Ragland, Suzanne Ragland Ray, Chase Ragland, Cas D'Angelo, Louise D'Angelo Monti, Laura D'Angelo, and Matthew Tate; great grandchildren; and step-sons, Ronnie and Larry Tate of Atlanta, Ga.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Douglas First Baptist Church Chapel, with Rev. Shep Johnson officiating. The congregation sang "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" and "Amazing Grace." Also, Bobby Stevenson, soloist/pianist, sang "How Great Thou Art." Burial followed at Woodlawn Cemetery, in Adel Ga.

Active pallbearers were Lee Ragland, Chase Ragland, Cas D'Angelo, Sonny Brown, Larry Tate, and Matthew Tate.

Leonard D. Voorhees, Sr.

Mr. Leonard D. Voorhees, Sr., 66, of Nicholls, Ga., passed away Friday, July 18, 2003, at his residence following a brief illness.

Mr. Voorhees, a native of Martinsburg, W.V., was the son of the late James Williams Voorhees and the late Pearl Irene Bartles Voorhees. He was a retired security guard with Gold Kist.

Survivors include: one son, Leonard Donald Voorhees, Jr., of Douglas, Ga.; three daughters, Kimberly Dawn Voorhees of West Green, Ga., and Lydia Diane Hollinger and Melissa Lee Reliford, both of Douglas, Ga.; one sister, Geraldine Meadows of Winchester, Virg.; special friend, Betty Jean Swarts of Nicholls, Ga.; 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Mr. Voorhees was returned to Martinsburg, W.V., where funeral services and interment were held July 22, 2003, at 2 p.m., at the Rosedale Cemetery, with Rev. Walter Bowers officiating.

Ricketson Funeral Home of Douglas, Ga., was in charge of the local arrangements.

Essie M.C. Shaw

Mrs. Essie Mae Jackson Shaw, 87, of Douglas, Ga., passed away July 16, 2003, following an extended illness.

Mrs. Shaw, a native of Upton, Ga., was born April 20, 1916, the daughter of the late Scenes Jackson and Minnieta Sutton Jackson. She was employed by South Georgia College where she worked until her retirement. Mrs. Shaw was a loyal member of Hightower Memorial Temple Church, served as the church secretary for many years, and was the widow of the late Ira Curtis and Deacon Henry Shaw .

Survivors include: one daughter, Dollene Phillips; five step-children, Sammy Shaw, Jr., of Douglas, Ga., Henry Shaw, Jr., of Miami, Fla., Arthur Lee Shaw of Detroit, Mich., Corilee Brown and Beatrice Benjamin, both of Buffalo, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Natasha Moore and Ketisha Moore both of Douglas, Ga.; two great-grands, Markevia Jordan and Mark Anthony Jordan, Jr.; two special nieces, Delores Jackson of Douglas, Ga., and Rose Thomas of Nicholls, Ga.; two god-children, Rodriquez Burch of Douglas, Ga., and Crystal Tyson of Jacksonville, Fla., one special care giver, Valorie Polk from CRMC.

Funeral services were held Sunday, July 20, 2003, at 3:30 p.m., at Hightower Memorial Temple Church, with Elder Randolph Scott officiating. A special musical selection was "I Won't Complain" sang by Chester Thomas. Interment followed Upton Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Owen Swanson, Gregory Batts, Jr., Brandon Batts, Aaron Jackson, Jr., Rodriguez Burch, and Otis Webb.

Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Hightower Memorial Temple.

Archie Gerald Cady

Mr. Archie Gerald Cady, 90, of Clough Boulevard, Douglas, Ga., passed away, Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at home following an extended illness.

Mr. Cady, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was born December 16, 1912, the son of the late Thomas Newton and Eliza Jane Henderson Cady. After a long farming career, he was employed by Douglas Foods and retired in 1980. He was a member of Jowers Chapel Church.

Survivors include: his wife, Sally Spivey Cady and wife, Jann, of Douglas, Ga.; one son, Roger Cady of Douglas, Ga.; two daughters, Betty Tanner and husband, Adair, of Douglas, Ga., and Shirley Jean Pope and husband, Van, of Vancouver, Wa.; one brother, Thomas Cady of Waynesville, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Robert J. Pope and wife, Barbara, of Wilsonville, Or., Richard A. Pope and wife, Laura, of Riverside, Ca., Sage Nicholas, Reid Cady, and Marti Tanner, all of Douglas, Ga., and Brandy Kirkwood and husband, Aaron, of Athens, Ga.; three great-grandchildren, Kelly Jean, Kevin, and Kris Pope, all of Wilsonville, Or. Mr. Cady was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul Cady, Willard Cady, Adolphus Cady, and Edward Cady; and two sisters, Hazel Mizell and Ruby Jowers.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 25, 2003, at Jowers Chapel Church near Axson, Ga., with Rev. Leroy Spivey, Rev. Archie Kight, and Rev. Gene Chaney officiating. Chris Purvis, Carolyn Wright, and Faye Adams sang "Farther Along," "He Touched Me," and "The Sun's Coming Up," with Lois Mills accompanying at the piano. Interment followed at the Tanner Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Lawton Cady, Danny Cady, Randolph Cady, T.J. Cady, Steven Adams, raymond Jowers, William Mills, and Adair Tanner.

Honorary pallbearers were Michael Wright, Coleman Wright, Hiram Tanner, Ed Gillis, Rev. Bobby Price, Curtis Wright, George Hester, Willis Burch, Ralph Tanner, Owen Davis, Raymond Musgrove, Jonathan Tanner, Louis Spivey, Luis Spivey, Dennis Wright, Joseph Cason, Toncie Arnold, Ed Penn, Buddy Arnold, Hubert Arnold, Bud Sturgis, Johnn, Ben, Paul, and David Spivey.

Hazel Augusta Dermott

Miss Hazel Augusta Dermott, 87, of Douglas, Ga., passed away Friday, July 25, 2003, at Shady Acres Convalescent Center, Douglas, Ga., following an extended illness.

Miss Dermott, a native of Ben Hill County, Ga., was born May 8, 1916, daughter of the late Herbert Cleburn and Westana Helena McDowell Dermott. She was a homemaker and a member of Douglas First Baptist Church.

Survivors include: two brothers, Wallace Dermott of Douglas, Ga., and Herman Dermott of Millbrook, Al.; one sister, Lorraine Adams of Douglas, Ga.; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday July 27, 2003, at Sims Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Shep Johnson officiating. Dr. Diskin Morgan, soloist, sang "When The Ring Those Golden Bells" and "Old Rugged Cross," with Lois Mills accompanying at the piano. Burial followed at the Douglas City Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Bobby Underwood, Lawson Turner, Billy Ward, Horace Tanner, Jesse Goodman, and Julian Meeks.
