Clinton Sydney Royals

Mr. Clinton Sydney Royals, 66, of Douglas, Ga., passed away early Monday morning, December 29, 2003, at Coffee Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.

Mr. Royals, a native of Atkinson County, Ga., was the son of the late James A. Royals and the late Nunnie Mae Spivey Royals. He was a self-employed machinery mechanic, having previously been employed by Standard Container, and was a member of Rocky Pond Baptist Church.

Survivors include: his wife, Betty Jean May Royals of Douglas, Ga.; three sons, Faron Sydney Royals of Douglas, Ga., Michael Dan Royals of Nicholls, Ga., and Robin Mark Royals, I, of Broxton, Ga.; one daughter, Vicky J. Cook of Douglas, Ga.; four brothers, Vernon A. Royals of Sparks, Ga., James Edward Royals, Donald Wilbur Royals, and Randall Benjamin Royals, all of DuPont, Ga.; two sisters, Audrey Ann Corbitt and Cathy Juanell Melton, both of Lakeland, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Thursday, January 1, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Ricketson Funeral Home, with Rev. Larry Stone, Rev. Clyde Purvis, and Rev. T.L. Adams officiating. A special poem, "Precious Memories" was presented by the daughter, Vicky Cook. A special eulogy was presented by Lucious Barnes. Special musical selections included "Precious Memories" rendered by the Mathis Sisters Group and guitarist Earl Strickland; "Just Look at Me" presented by soloist and guitarist Faron S. Royals; and "Precious Memories" was hummed by the Mathis Sisters Group as the congregation exited the building. Interment followed in the Clinton Royals Family Cemetery. At the gravesite, "Lover of My Soul" was presented by taped music.

Active pallbearers were Rock Robinson, Alex Walker, Tommy Lamar Grantham, Ricky Colburn, Lucious Barnes, Steve McClelland, Leon McClelland, and Earl Strickland.

Ricketson Funeral Home of Douglas, Ga., was in charge of the arrangements.

Jerome Miley

Mr. Jerome Miley, 48, of Alma, Ga., passed away December 4, 2003.

Mr. Miley, a native of Alma, Ga., was born May 24, 1955, the son of the late Elese Irene, Miley Richardson, the late Joe Richardson, and Raymond Sykes.

Survivors include: his companion, Aundra Smith of Alma, Ga.; two daughters, Tedra Raquel White Harold and husband, David, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Kassie Shukun Jenkins of Alma, Ga.; two sons, Alessandro Tyrone Miley and wife, Terri, and Takobie LeAndre Miley and wife, Aimee, all of Alma, Ga.; one reared daughter, Laura E. Moore and husband, Anterrio, of Alma, Ga.; one reared son, Tarus Brinson of Alma, Ga.; four brothers, Eric R. Wilcox of Alma, Ga., David Sykes of St. Marys, Ga., Savalous Sykes of Seattle, Wash., and Williams Andrew Sykes and wife, Lucinda, of Pensacola, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, December 9, 2003, at New Covenant Ministries in Alma, Ga., with Tobias Wilcox Linder officiating. Special musical selections were provided by a combined choir and soloist Vanilla Lewis. Interment followed in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Alma, Ga.

Active pallbearers were Troy Brinson, Jerry Smith, Horace Kelly, Frank Green, Demetris Hines, and Ervin Dover.

Honorary pallbearers were Nathaniel Carter, Perry Bennett, Quitman Smiley, Anthony Staten, Larry Jones, and David Harold.

Daryl Glenn Leavens

Mr. Daryl Glenn Leavens, 45, of North College Avenue, Douglas, Ga., passed away December 11, 2003, at Coffee Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Leavens, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was born November 9, 1958, the son of Herbert Chester and Vern Ann Holton Leavens. He was a mobile home service contractor.

Survivors include: his wife, Amy Sinclair Leavens of Douglas, Ga.; six sons, Corey Leavens and wife, Kyndal, Glenn Leavens, Dylan Ross, Hunter Ross, Ches Leavens, and Slade Leavens, all of Douglas, Ga.; parents, Chester and Ann Leavens of Douglas, Ga.; one sister, Janet Aldridge and husband, Roger, of Carrolton, Ga.; one brother, Derek Leavens of Douglas, Ga.; two grandchildren several nieces and nephews. Daryl was the grandson of the late David and Oletha Holton and John and Molly Leavens.

Funeral services were held Sunday, December 14, 2003, at 2 p.m., at the West Ward Street Church of God, with Rev. Travis Porter and Rev. Jesse Odgen officiating. Soloist Terri Varis sang "How Do I Live Without You." Also taped selections of "Dance With My Father" and "Love Grew Where The Blood Fell" were featuerd. Terry Giddens, pianist, provided soft music for the prelude and postlude. Burial followed in the Satilla Memorial Gardens Cemetery near Douglas, Ga.

Active pallbearers were Rick Ricciardelli, Anthony Moore, Larry Spivey, Oliver Husrsey, Danny Fussell, Ray Lee, and Sam DeCasper.

Deborah Ann Adams Trowell

Mrs. Deborah Ann Adams Trowell, 49, of Douglas, Ga., passed away on Monday, December 8, 2003, at Coffee Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.

Mrs. Trowell, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was born April 30, 1954, the daughter of the late Lewis Charlton and Estelle Nipper Adams. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Chatterton Holiness Baptist Church.

Survivors include: her husband, Roger Trowell of Douglas, Ga.; one sister, Jessie Lee Smith of Douglas Ga.; two brothers, Nathaniel Adams of Jesup, Ga., and John Adams of Brunswick, Ga.; mother-in-law, Lalla Trowell of Broxton, Ga.; one sister-in-law, Linda Harper and husband, John, of Broxton, Ga.; two brothers-in-law, Woodrow Trowell, Jr., and wife, Gail, of Ray City, Ga., and Royce Trowell of Broxton, Ga.; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held Wednesday, December 10, 2003, at 2 p.m., at Chatterton Holiness Baptist Church near Nicholls, Ga., with Rev. Gene Chaney, Rev. Max Newham, and Rev. Robert Merritt officiating. The Chatterton Church Choir sang "He Abides," soloist Billy Griffith sang "A Greater Place," and soloist Gene Chaney sang "Song the Angels Cannot Sing," with Sammy Snipes accompanying at the piano. Interment followed in Chatterton Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Lewis Anderson, Sr., Willis Anderson, Don Adams, Greg Dowling, David Adams, and John Henry Harper.

Honorary pallbearers were members of Chatterton Holiness Baptist Church.

Elinor Sirmons Watson

Mrs. Elinor Sirmons Watson, 87, of Palatka, Fla., formerly of Douglas, Ga., passed away on Wednesday, December 10, 2003, in Palatka, Fla., following an extended illness.

Mrs. Watson, a native of Lanier County, Ga., was born April 2, 1916, the daughter of the late Rowan and Nancy Tyson Sirmons. She was the widow of the late Mark Mitchell Watson, a retired restaurant owner/operator, and attended Berean Baptist Church in Palatka, Fla.

Survivors include: one daughter, Martha Luke Hawn and husband, Conner, of Palatka, Fla.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, December 12, 2003, at 11 a.m., at Sims Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Scot Downing officiating. Special music was provided by soloist Jana Wilhite who sang "What A Day that Will Be." Also Faye Adams, Chris Purvis, and Carolyn Wright sang "Shall We Gather At The River" and "Precious Memories," with Lois Mills accompanying at the piano. Burial followed at the Satilla Memorial Gardens near Douglas, Ga.

Active pallbearers were Mitchell Drawdy, Buddy Drawdy, Daniel Wilhite, Chuck Foster, Randy Wallis, Joe Taylor, David Perry, and Ray Bellflower.

Geneva L. Perkins

Mrs. Geneva L. Perkins, 78, of Douglas, Ga., passed away Sunday, November 30, 2003, at Shady Acres Convalescent Center following an extended illness.

Mrs. Perkins, a native of Donaldsonville, Ga., was born April 7, 1925, the daughter of the late Jimmy Lawson and the late Moree C. Moore. She was a member of Last Day's True Holiness Church in Douglas, Ga., and the widow of the late Lucious C. Perkins.

Survivors include: one brother, Edward Christian of Sarasota, Fla.; two sisters, Eula Mae Walden and husband, John Davis, and Dorothy Christian, both of Sarasota, Fla.; one son, Cecil L. Burneys and wife, Claretha, of Waycross, Ga.; five grandchildren, Angelia R. Watts and special friend, Troy Vickers, Michael L. Shaw and special friend, Twanna Flenorl, and Terrance A. Watts, all of Douglas, Ga.; 10 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Saturday, December 6, 2003, at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Douglas, Ga., with Rev. Grady Seawright officiating. Special musical selections were provided by God's Remnant and Mark Mosley and Torey Burchett. Interment followed in the Douglas City Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Marcus Hancock, Johnny Curtis, Randy Davis, Bobby McRae, Terry Williamson, and Randall Grady.

Kayla Evette Braswell

Little Miss Kayla Evette Braswell, 17, of Douglas, Ga., passed away recently following an extended illness.

Miss Braswell, a native of Douglas, Ga., was born August 10, 1986, the daughter of Anthony and Donna (Braswell) Davis. She was a student at Coffee High School.

Survivors include: her parents, Anthony and Donna Davis of Douglas, Ga.; one sister, Faith Alexandria Davis; four grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. Theodore Braswell and Mr. and Mrs. Milton Trice; great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland Taylor and the late Mr. and Mrs. Ned Braswell; six uncles; three aunts; several other relatives.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Saturday, December 13, 2003, at Everett Chapel in Douglas, Ga., with Rev. Carlton Keith Taylor officiating. Special musical selections were rendered by The Everett Chapel Junior Choir, soloist Kentaiwon Durham, and Lateisha Holloway. Interment followed in the Douglas City Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Kelvin Harris, Quan Hancock, Brandon Moore, and Donteal Carter.

Gertrude Harrell Prescott Murphy

Mrs. Gertrude Harrell Prescott Murphy, 81, of West Gordon Street, Douglas, Ga., passed away Tuesday, December 9, 2003, at Coffee Regional Medical Center, Douglas, Ga.

Mrs. Murphy, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was born January 22, 1922, the daughter of the late Tommy and Belle Bryant Harrell. She was a homemaker, the widow of the late Jesse Prescott, and a member of the Douglas Gospel Assembly.

Survivors include: two sisters, Mary Lou McKouen of Norfolk, Va., and Estelle Heath of Douglas, Ga.; one brother, Clayton George Harrell of Colorado; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Murphy was preceded in death by one son, David Prescott.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, December 13, 2003, at Sims Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Allen Peacock officiating. Scott and Joyce Roberts sang "Amazing Grace" and "Come Home," with Scott Roberts accompanying at the piano. Also a taped selection of "Go Rest High On that Mountain" by Vince Gill was provided. Burial followed at the Douglas City Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Michael Pittman, Michael Ansel, Matthew Ansel, John West, Alfred Harrell, and Jimmy Moore.

Akiko Haruki Harper

Mrs. Akiko Haruki Harper, 67, of Mossy Oak Road, Douglas, Ga., passed away Thursday, December 4, 2003, at home following an extended illness.

Mrs. Harper, a native of Tokyo, Japan, was born January 15, 1936, the daughter of the late Otokichi and Yasu Uno Haruki. She was a homemaker and a member of Douglas Eastside Baptist Church for over 40 Years, where she served as a teacher in Sunday School in the children's department and nursery.

Survivors include: her husband, James E. Harper of Douglas, Ga.; two daughters, Judy Hobby of Fitzgerald, Ga., and Jo Anne Grant of Orange Park, Fla.; two sons, Jimmy Harper and Jack Harper, both of Douglas, Ga.; 12 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; two brothers in Japan.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, December 7, 2003, at Eastside Baptist Church, with Dr. John Dobbins officiating. Soloist Paul Hutcheson sang "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art," with Scott Roberts accompanying at the piano. Also John Glosson sang "Beulah Land," with Jay Beverly accompanying at the piano. Burial followed in the Satilla Memorial Gardens near Douglas, Ga.

Active pallbearers were Berry Harper, Billy Ray Harper, Cliff Pharr, Stan Pharr, William Harper, and Ronnie Nelson.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Senior Adult Ladies Bible study classes of Eastside Baptist Church.

Louise Speight Thorpe

Mrs. Louise Speight Thorpe, 77, of Douglas, Ga., passed away Thursday, December 4, 2003.

Mrs. Thorpe, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was born November 30, 1926, the daughter of the late Henderson Speight, Sr., and the late Josephine Sharp Speight. She was the widow of the late George Thorpe and a member of Oak Grove AME Church.

Survivors include: five children, Myrna Speight, Charles Speight and wife, Angie, Laverne Johnson and husband, Larry, Robert Thorpe and wife, Idella, and Melvin Thorpe; brothers and sisters, Bernice Brownlee, Elva Speight, Verna Speight, Henderson M. Speight, Jr., and wife, Juanita, and Roosevelt Speight; 13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Mrs. Thorpe was preceded in death by one son, Major Speight.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Monday, December 8, 2003, at Oak Grove AME Church in Huffer, Ga., with Estella Sloan officiating. Interment followed in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Robert Thorpe, Carl Speight, Reuben Speight, Travis Speight, Tony Webb, and Alphonso London.

Honorary pallbearers were David Northcutt, Roosevelt Jackson, Miles Newton, Willie James Brock, Robert Bivens, and Nathaniel Dukes.

E.J. (Jack) Evans

Mr. E.J. (Jack) Evans, 74, of Hazlehurst, Ga., passed away Saturday, December 13, 2003, at his residence.

Mr. Evans, a native of Dodge County, Ga., was the son of the late Theo H. Evans and bell Howard Evans. He was the widower of the late Eloise Murray Evans and the late Roxie Miller Evans. He was a Korean veteran, a volunteer fireman for over 20 years, and was retired from Hazlehurst Automotive and a member of Hazlehurst Church of God.

Survivors include: two daughters, Jackie Music and husband, Bill, and Sandra Hughes and husband, Carlton, all of Hazlehurst, Ga.; three sons, Jerry T. Evans and wife, Luann, and Sam McAllister, all of Hazlehurst, Ga., and Rev. James E. Evans and wife, Debbie of Waycross, Ga.; one sister, Sue Thomas of Eastman, Ga.; one brother, Henry Evans and wife, Sylvia, of Eastman, Ga.; one sister-in-law, Bertie Mae Wooten of Douglas, Ga.; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, December 16, 2003, at Hazlehurst Church of God, with Rev. Dewain Joiner and Rev. Johnny Taylor officiating. Interment followed in Satilla Cemetery in Jeff Davis County.

Craig Fred DuVall

Mr. DuVall, 55, of Atlanta, Ga., passed away Thursday, December 4, 2003. Mr. DuVall was "a pillar of the community and always had a wave and smile for everyone."

Survivors include: his wife, Rebecca Panter DuVall of Atlanta, Ga.; one daughter Julie Marie DuVall of Atlanta, Ga.; mother and father, Thurmond and Carolyn Moore DuVall of Hogansville, Ga.; one sister, Charlene DuVall Brown of Dunwoody, Ga.; three brothers, Thurmond DuVall, Jr. Destin, Fla., Scott DuVall of Forth Walton, Fla., Kirk DuVall, Hogansville, Ga.; and several grand kids and nieces. He was preceded in death by one son, Kevin Craig DuVall.

Funeral services were held Monday, December 8, 2003, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, with Mosingor Richard Lopez, and Father Fred Wendell officiating. Interment followed at Crestlawn Memorial Park.

Felton Burke, Sr.

Rev. Felton Burke, Sr., 76, of Corbitt Drive, Douglas, Ga., passed away on Wednesday, December 3, 2003, at Coffee Regional Medical Center from an extended illness.

Rev. Burke, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was born April 12, 1927, the son of the late Jim and Emily Buchans Burke. He was a retired Church of God evangelist for over 60 years, serving in many churches in South Georgia area.

Survivors include: his wife, Audrey Corbitt Burke of Douglas, Ga.; three sons, Emory Burke and wife, Bonnie, of Glade Hill, Va., Jimmy Burke and wife, Beverly, of Nicholls, Ga., and Felton Burke, Jr., and wife, Linda, of Jesup, Ga.; two daughters, Sandra Strickland and husband, Wesley, and Norma Vaught and husband, Darrell, all of Waycross, Ga.; one daughter-in-law, Pam Burke of Waycross, Ga.; two brothers, Rev. Donald Burke and wife, Martha, and Charles Burke and wife, Josephine, all of Waycross, Ga.; one sister, Marilyn Harper and husband, Clifford, of Douglas, Ga.; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Rev. Burke was preceded in death by one son, Ron Burke, and two brothers, Curtis Burke and Pete Burke.

Funeral services were held Friday, December 5, 2003, at 11 a.m., at Bethany Holiness Baptist Church near Ambrose, Ga., with Rev. Robert Tanner and Rev. Jamie Torres officiating. Paul Hutcheson, Scott Roberts, and Derward Buchan sang "Prettiest Flowers," "Just Inside The Eastern Gate," and "Amazing Grace," with Scott Roberts accompanpying at the piano. Burial followed in Bethany Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Wes Strickland, Jr., J.D. Burke, Chad Burke, Jason Vaught, Ashley Vaught, and Christopher Vaught.

Honorary pallbearers were all ministers attending.

Juanita Jones Edgar

Mrs. Juanita Jones Edgar, 76, of Wood Lake Circle, Douglas, Ga., passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2003, at Coffee Regional Medical Center, Douglas, Ga.

Mrs. Edgar, a native of Sarasota County, Fla., was born May 20, 1927, the daughter of the late James Ira and Julia Gray Jones. A graduate of Douglas High School and South Georgia College, she had retired from St. Regis Paper Company, Jacksonville, Fla., after 25 years. She had moved to Douglas from Jacksonville Florida seven years ago.

Survivors include: her husband, Jack E. Edgar, Sr.; one son, Jack E. Edgar, Jr., and wife, Sally, of Valdosta, Ga.; one brother Max Jones of Macon, Ga.; one sister, Hilda Corbitt of Macon, Ga.; one brother-in-law, William Edgar and wife, Linda, of Alma, Ga.; three sisters-in-law, Louise Sapp, Evelyn Davis, and Yvonne Tanner, all of Callahan, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; special friends of family during illness, Bill Ecklor, Sharon Mullins, Alzheimer's Care program, members of Happy Friends Visitation Group. Mrs. Edgar was preceded in death by one brother, Claude Jones.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 9, 2003, at 2 p.m., at Sims Funeral Home Chapel, Douglas, Ga., with Rev. Shep Johnson, Rev. Jimmy Bryant, and Rev. Jimmy Corbitt officiating. Soloist Jimmy Corbitt sang "Amazing Grace;" Deborah Davis sang "It Is Well," with Lois Mills accompanying at the piano. Burial followed at the Douglas City Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Michael Davis, Ronnie DeWitt, Jason Davis, Steven Lankford, Sam Edgar, and Dale Jones.

Honorary pallbearers were Mike Davis and Zack Davis.
