Mrs. Mary Burzell "Mama James" James

Mrs. Mary Burzell "Mama James" James, 88, of Carrollton, died Jan. 10, 1998 at a local hospital.

She was born in Carroll County, Georgia, Feb. 2, 1909, daughter of the late Burr and Susan Sticher Gordon, Mrs. James was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Besides her parents, whe was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. K. L. James; daughter, Mary Nell Scott; and brothers, Ronald Gordon and Bradford Gordon.

Funeral services were Monday afternoon at Martin and Hightower West Center Street Chapel in Carrollton, with the Rev. Vann Dempsey officiating. Music was provided by Richard and Becky Griffin. Pallbearers were Wyndel Carnes, Bud Scudder, Johnny Smith, Mark Anderson, Mike Mashburn, Robert Gordon, Gary Gordon and Russell Scott. Interment was in Carroll Memory Gardens.

Survivors include brothers, Raymond Gordon of Carrollton and Preston Gordon of Arnco; son-in-law, Brice Scott of Carrollton; grandchildren, Mrs. Jerry (Sherry) Tuggle, Mr. and Mrs. Wyndel (Gail) Carnes, Mr. and Mrs. Bud (Vicki) Scudder, and Mr. and Mrs. Johnny (Connie) Smith; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Ellen Hill Phillips

Mrs. Ellen Hill Phillips, 74, of Lovelace Street, Newnan, died Jan. 6, 1998 at Peachtree Regional Hospital in Newnan.

She was born March 10, 1923, to the late Bose and Annie Bean Hill. A brother, Bose Hill Jr., preceded her in death. She joined the Friendship Baptist Church under the pastorage of the late Rev. Joe James. She was married to the late Zack Phillips.

Funeral services were held Monday from the Sellers-Smith R.W.S. Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Felton James officiating, assisted by the Rev. James Alexander Sr. Burial was in Sunset Cemetery. Pallbearers were Melvin Carter Jr., Derrell Levell, Walter Carter Sr., Walter Carter Jr. and Melvin Prather.

Survivors include sisters, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin (Zebra) Carter Sr. of Newnan and Mrs. Katie Eunice Trammell of Dayton, Ohio; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Robert George Duke, 82, of Sargent died Jan. 12, 1998, at Peachtree Regional Hospital.

Born March 15, 1915 in Newnan, Mr. Duke was retired from Bibb Co. and a veteran.

A service will be today at 4 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Arrington and the Rev. Bill Dean officiating. Interment will follow at Sargent Cemetery with Wayne Lewis, David Garner, Steve Head, Larry Rooker, Bobby Veal and Charles Moore serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Duke of Sargent; son, Wayne Duke of Newnan; sister, Sarah Ozmore of Union City and four grandchildren.

Mrs. Faith Holcombe, 87, of Chestnut Drive in Newnan died Jan. 5, 1998, at her home.

Born Oct. 14, 1910 in Carroll County, Mrs. Holcombe was a homemaker.

A service was conducted Jan. 7, 1998 at McKoon Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Dean officiating.

Interment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Brad Hobby, Michael B. Watson, Michael W. Evans, Stanley R. Evans, Edward G. Hobby Jr., David Piggott, and Dr. M.L. Watson Jr serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert J. Evans, Ester Hobby, Joy Camayd and Susan Piggott.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Bobby (Remah) Evans of Stockbridge, Mr. and Mrs. M.L. (Seretha) Watson of Crossville, Tenn.; sisters, Ruby Pope, Dester Reece, both of Newnan; brother, Matha Denney of Newnan; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. McCoy was born Aug. 17, 1929 in Sharpsburg.

Mrs. Velmarie Farmer Smith, 85, of Beaver Street in Newnan died Jan. 7, 1998, at Newnan Hospital.

Born June 6, 1912, Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John (Luecher) Farmer and the wife of the late Allen W. Smith. She was a member of Jones Chapel United Methodist Church.

A service was conducted Tuesday at Sellers-Smith Funeral Home with pastor Edward Harris officiating, assisted by the Rev. Melvin Brittian Jr. Interment followed at Jones Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery with her nephews serving as pallbearers.

Mr. Walter Rives Baggarly

Mr. Walter Rives Baggarly, 57, of Georgia Highway 34 in Sharpsburg died Jan. 13, 1998, at Newnan Hospital.

Born in Coweta County, Mr. Baggarly was the son of the late James H. Baggarly Sr. and was preceded in death by his twin brother, Warren Ayers Baggarly. A 1958 graduate of Newnan High School, he worked with Eastern Airlines for 31 years.

Mr. Baggarly owned the Buggy Shop Museum in Senoia and was a member of Senoia United Methodist Church.

A service will be today at 11 a.m. at Senoia United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carol Cook and the Rev. Dan McFarland officiating. Interment will follow at Senoia City Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Baggarly of Senoia; sons and daughters-in-law, Warren Scott and Teresa Baggarly, Michael Brian and Terri Baggarly of Sharpsburg; mother, Rubye Rives Baggarly of Senoia; brother and sister-in-law, James H. and Glenda K. Born Oct. 11, 1909 in Meriwether County, Mrs. Jones was retired from Moreland Knitting Mills. She was preceded in death by a sister, Wilene Hopson.

A service was yesterday at McKoon Funeral Home, with the Rev. Danny Wilson, the Rev. Bill Dean and the Rev. Powers Witcher officiating. Interment followed at Southview Cemetery with her grandchildren serving as pallbearers.

Mr. Dock 'Pete' Williams Jr., 64, of Hill Street in Newnan died Jan. 11, 1998, at Beaulieu Convalescent Center.

Born March 1, 1933 in Manchester, Mrs. Williams was the son of the late Dock Williams Sr. of Perris, Calif. and the late Ethel Brown Redding of Manchester.

He worked as a bus driver for Central High School, Eastside Elementary School and Ruth Hill Elementary School and also worked at a construction worker.

A service was yesterday at at Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie D. Washington and the Rev. Felton James officiating, assisted by the Rev. Melvin D. Brittian. Interment followed at Eastview Cemetery with Darrell Beadles, Dexter Hunter, Edward Hunter Jr., Johnny McAfee, Levi Smith and Alton Taylor Jr. serving as pallbearers.

Mrs. Julia M. Heard

Mrs. Julia M. Heard, 92, of Hogansville, died Jan. 17, 1998 at Hospice LaGrange.

Mrs. Heard was born Nov. 17, 1905 in Chamber County, Alabama, daughter of the late Lawson and Rilla Hall Megginson. She had lived in Hogansville since 1934, and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. She was retired from Uniroyal Inc. after 39 years of service. She was the wife of the late Charlie A. Heard.

Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at Antioch Baptist Church in Hogansville. The Rev. R. C. Prescott, Dr. Jimmy Brown and Pastor Will Fisher officiated, and interment was in Shadowlawn Cemetery in LaGrange.

Pallbearers were Roy Wright, R. L. Kent Jr., Curtis Arrington, Joe Spinks, Larry Dorrough, and Donald Neese. Honorary pallbearers were Sam Billingsley and Alga Robinson.

Mr. Ralph Merrill "Pud" Nations, 81, of Welcome Road, Newnan, died Jan. 18, 1998 at Beaulieu Convalescent Center.

He was born Dec. 5, 1916 in Fayette County, Ga. He was retired as a machinist for R. D. Cole Co. and Brown Steel of Newnan and was a member of First Baptist Church of Newnan.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan with Dr. Gene Tyre officiating. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park on Roscoe Road. Pallbearers will be Ray Storey, Haskell Barber, Gary King, Fred McKoy, Charlie Wiggins and Donnie Youngblood.

Mr. William Terrell Prescott Sr.

Mr. William Terrell Prescott Sr., 70, of Newnan, died Jan. 18, 1998 at his home.

Born Sept. 9, 1927 in Carroll County, he was the son of the late James Mathew and Retha Sanders Prescott. He was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Prescott was a retired mechanic from Gentry Motor Company, and he was a member of and served as a deacon of Sargent Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Mac Prescott, Grady Prescott and Curtis Prescott.

Funeral services were held at graveside Monday afternoon at Forest Lawn Memorial Park on Roscoe Road with Pastor Doug Story officiating. Pallbearers were Edward Camp, Edward Miller, John Prescott, Fuller Gordon, Charles Dial, W. L. Winkles, Eddie Bean, Barry Jiles, Dillard Henderson, Fred Cochran and Robert Masdon.

Mr. Hardie Lee "Slow" Richards, 81, of Georgia Highway 16 West, Newnan, died Jan. 17, 1998 at Peachtree Regional Hospital in Newnan.

Mr. Richards was born Oct. 16, 1916 in Carrollton, Ga. He was employed as a fixer with Bibb Manufacturing and was an Army veteran.

Funeral services were held Monday morning at the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home with the Rev. Travis Eidson officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan. Pallbearers were Bobby Ward, Chuck Byers, Brian Kilgore, Scott Kilgore, Buddy Ward and Tony Ward.
