James Elbert Allen

James Elbert Allen, 87, of Augusta died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002 at his daughter’s residence in Hephzibah. His funeral was 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, at Hillcrest Memorial Park, with the Rev. Frank Thigpen officiating. Mr. Allen, a native of Jefferson County, had lived most of his life in Richmond County. He was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Jack C. Fortune American Legion Post #205 and a former employee of Brighams Supermarket of Augusta and Handy Land, Inc. of Augusta. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Allen and his son, James E. “Sonny” Allen Jr. Survivors include a daughter, Kay A. Roberts of Hephzibah, a son-in-law, Terry Roberts of Hephzibah, a daughter-in-law, Jonnie Allen of Blythe; a brother, Oswald Allen of Belvedere, S.C.; five grandsons, James E. “Trey” Allen III of Martinez, Wally Roberts of Nashville, Tenn., Jeffrey Roberts of Hephzibah, Jon Michael Norfolk of Louisville and Jimmy Norfolk of Blythe; five great-grandsons, James E. “Chip” Allen IV of Martinez and four other great-grandsons; and a great-great-granddaughter. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Local Chapter, 326 Greene St., Augusta, Ga. 30901.Johnny Lee Randall
Johnny Lee Randall died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002 at Atlanta Medical Center.
His funeral was 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at Phinazee and Son Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Willie J. Jackson Jr. officiating. Burial was in Third Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Randall, a native of Burke County, was a retired bus driver for the Burke County School System. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Vernon and Twyla Randall of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and Kelvin and Karen Robinson of Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Sharon Williams of Ft. Lauderdale and Vera Randall of Philadelphia; six brothers, Benny Lee, Paul, James, Keith, Corey and Curtis, all of Ft. Lauderdale; and three sisters, Mary Jane, Maxine and Angle of Ft. Lauderdale; his father, Mack Randall of Ft. Lauderdale; and 11 grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Seth Collins, Charles Collins, Robert Collins, John Collins, Lindsey Vaughn and Michael Mitchell. Honorary pallbearers were bus drivers of Burke County.

Helen Ramseur Bell

Helen Ramseur Bell of Waynesboro died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002 at University Hospital.
Her funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, at New Springfield Baptist Church, with the Rev. R. Stephens officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Bell, a native of Lincoln County, N.C., was a retired teacher in the Burke County School System. She was a member of Beechwood Baptist Church, where she served as a member of the #2 Club and Mother of the Church. She received a bachelor of science in education degree from Winston-Salem Teachers College, Winston-Salem, N.C. and a masters degree in special education from Columbia University in New York. She was named Teacher of the Year in 1969. She retired in 1991 after 36 years of molding minds. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Julian Bell.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Dorcella B. and Michael Raftin of Hampton and Sharron Mouldin of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; a sister, Clementine Foster of Shelby, N.C.; and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be members of the Burke County Retired Teachers Association.

Leroy Dant

Leroy Dant, 61, of Way-nesboro died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002 at his residence.
His funeral was 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home, Inc. in Waynesboro, with Hall C. Crowder officiating. Burial followed at Rose Dhu Cemetery in Vidette. Mr. Dant was born in Evansville, Ind. and had been a resident of Burke County since 1999. He was a member of Burkehaven Chapel and was a self-employed professional pilot for Ledbetter Bros., Sav-A-Ton Oil Co., Capair, Boardman Petroleum, Camp Oil Co. and Shelnut Enterprises. He was an active member of the Experimental Aircraft Association for over 40 years, Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association for over 40 years and an active captain of the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary Civil Air Patrol. He held certificates as an Airline Transport Pilot, Certified Flight Instructor, Airframe & Power Plant Mechanic and an authorized inspector for the FAA. Survivors include his widow, Betty Bailey Dant of Waynes-boro; a daughter, Cindy Smith of Newborn; a son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Mary Dant of Harlem; five stepchildren, Nell Headley, Ann Youmans, Kay Stevens, Mary Davis and Jim Bailey; a brother, Virgil Dant of Greenwood, Ind.; two sisters, Hazel Matlock of Greenwood and Patty Heatherly of Trafalgar, Ind.; his parents, Clyde and Irene Dant of Greenwood; four grandchildren, Wes, Tanner and Blythe Dant and Mitchell Smith; and 12 step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Wes and Tanner Dant, Mitchell Smith, Hunt Headley III, Ken Hair and Steve Gay. Honorary pallbearers were Men of Burkehaven Chapel, EAA Chapter 172, Mike Lockaby and Ralph Powell. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Burkehaven Christian School, 498 Park Drive, Waynesboro, Ga. 30830.

Earline Tilley Rosier

Earline Tilley Rosier, 85, of Sylvania died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002 at University Hospital in Augusta. Her funeral was 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, at Jackson Baptist Church, with the Rev. Pete Wall officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Rosier, a native of Screven County, was a homemaker and a member of Jackson Baptist Church. She resided with her granddaughter, Regina Bolton, in Sylvania. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil J. Rosier Sr. and a daughter, Jeanette Rosier.Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Clara R. and William Jackson of Girard; a son and daughter-in-law, Virgil J. Jr. and Colleen Rosier of Sylvania; two sisters, Louise T. Cleland and Alvarine T. Fries, both of Sylvania; a foster brother, Arnold West of Sylvania; and eight grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Robert Tilley, Joe Cleland, Roger Cleland, Clinton Tilley, Bubba Bazemore and Mike Owens.

Sidney E. Quick

Sidney Elizabeth Atkinson Quick, 75, of Waynesboro died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002 at Burke Medical Center.Her funeral was 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 14, at the chapel of DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home in Waynesboro, with Dr. David Carter officiating. Burial was in Burke Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Quick, a native of Jenkins County, had lived most of her adult life in Burke County. She had retired as a sales clerk, having worked many years at Dolins Department Store in Waynesboro and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Waynesboro. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Quick. Survivors include a daughter, Regina Nipper of Raleigh, N.C.; a son, F. Scott Barfield of Way-nesboro; four sisters, Lillian Reeves of Marietta, Idella Mims of Waynesboro, Corine Fore of Lawrenceville and Odessa Hyl-ton of Reno, Nev.; three brothers, William H. Atkinson of Lawrenceville, Ethan Allen Atkinson of Bradington, Fla., and James Atkinson of Dora-ville; three granddaughters, Karen North, Cheryl Schoeling and Stacey Smith; and two great-granddaughters. Pallbearers were Bob Smith, Phillip Smith, Stacey Smith, James North, Ted Schoenling and Ben Smith. Memorials may be made to the Burke County Alzheimer’s Association, c/o Wimberly House Ministries, Liberty Street, Waynesboro, Ga. 30830.

Mary C. Minor

Mary Chandler Minor, 67, of Sylvania died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002 at her residence after a sudden illness. Her funeral was 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 15, at Thompson-Strickland-Waters Funeral Home Chapel in Sylvania, with the Rev. Yonce Lively officiating. Burial was in the Millen City Cemetery. Mrs. Minor, a native of Burke County, was an admissions clerk at Screven County Hospital. She had worked for Plant Vogtle for 8 years and retired from Southern Bell after 32 years as an operator. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and a member of the Little Horse Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Minor Sr.
Survivors include two daughters, Pat M. Kemp of Sylvania and Debra M. Suggs of Millen; a son, Charles E. “Eddie” Minor Jr. of Sylvania; three brothers, Ray Chandler of Sardis and Joe Chandler and Floyd S. Chandler Jr., both of Girard; her mother, Louise Oglesby Chandler of Girard; and five grandchildren. Pallbearers were Ralph Odom, Glenn Odom, Steve Burke, Bob Lee, Todd Campbell and Toby Bragg. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Thompson, Mike Chandler, David Denham, Randy Chandler, Littleton Bragg, Fred Williams, Greg Chandler, Jeff Chandler, Arnie Kemp and Dallas Suggs.

George Jackson Sr.

George Jackson Sr. of Way-nesboro died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002 at University Hospital in Augusta. His funeral was 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at Bark Camp Baptist Church, with the Revs. Eddie Walker and Willie J. Jackson Jr. officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mr. Jackson, a native of McDuffie County, was a World War II veteran. He was a member of Second Bynes Grove Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the board for many years. He was a past worshipful master of Acacia Lodge #128 of Louisville District #22, receiving his Gold Card membership on Oct. 14, 1991. Survivors include six sons and three daughters-in-law, George Jackson Jr. of Hephzibah, Willie and Patricia Jackson of Wrens, Charlie and Mary Jackson of Bowling Green, Ky., Allen and Marian Jackson, James and Ernestine Jenkins, all of Way-nesboro and Jacob L. Walker of Durham, N.C.; 11 daughters and five sons-in-law, Alice G. Fletcher of Red Springs, N.C., Alberta and Rev. James Clark, Kathleen Williams and Mildred and Tommy Bennett, all of Waynesboro, Ethel and Robert Stephens, Lizzie and Minus Freeman, Ruth Jackson and Ruby Brown, all of Augusta, Louise Clerveaux and Theresa and John Bacon, all of Fort Pierce, Fla., Inez Thorpe of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; 47 grandchildren; and 44 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were deacons of Second Bynes Grove and Bark Camp Baptist churches.

Jessie Givens

Jessie Givens of Girard died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002 at his residence.
His funeral will be noon Saturday, Dec. 21, at Givens Grove Baptist Church, with the Revs. Isiah Kirkland and Willie Givens officiating. Mr. Givens, a native of Burke County, was employed at Girard Mall. He was a member of Givens Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include three brothers, Fred Givens and Timothy Givens, both of Girard and Atlee Givens of Tulsa, Okla.; and four sisters, Sally Ellison of Girard, Betty McCoy of Sardis and Vernia Givens and Lula Jones, both of Waynesboro.Nancy V. Melton
Nancy V. Melton, 72, of Blythe died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002 at University Hospital in Augusta.A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Melton was a homemaker and a member of Crossroads Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her son, Wayne Melton. Survivors include her widower, Robert E. Melton; two daughters, Janet Marlene Melton Johnson and Annette Melton Broxton; two sons, Ronald Melton and Gary Allen Melton; a stepdaughter, Mary Alice Randall; two sisters, Rita Wallingford and Beverly Ann Satterfield; a brother, Billy Joe White; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mary Ann Pearce, 68, of Waynesboro died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002 at her residence.
Graveside services were 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, at Botsford Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Wayne Dixon officiating. Mrs. Pearce was a lifelong resident of Burke County and was a member of Botsford Baptist Church in Waynesboro. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas W. Pearce. Survivors include two sons, Michael T. Pearce of Waynes-boro and Mark C. Pearce of Martinez; three daughters, Connie M. Pearce of Evans, Phyllis P. Martin of Augusta and Mary P. Williams of Waynes-boro; two sisters, Glenda Chan-ce of Sardis and Elouise Brinson of Springfield; and 10 grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Botsford Baptist Church, 825 Botsford Church Road, Waynesboro, Ga. 30830.

Reginald “Reggie” Watkins

Reginald “Reggie” Watkins, 88, of Alexander died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002 at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Louisville. His funeral was 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, at Bethel Baptist Church in Alexander, with the Rev. Tim Parrish officiating. Burial was in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Watkins was a native and lifelong resident of Alexander. He had retired as a self-employed electrical contractor having served many families in Burke County over the years and was also a barber for the Alex-ander community. He was Baptist and a member of the Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include his widow, Ethel Ready Watkins of Alex-ander; two sisters, Erma Kemp of Hiltonia and Gwendolyn Sapp of Augusta; and nieces and nephews.
Active pallbearers were Roland Oglesby, Barney Nevils, Keith Norris, Reeves “Bubba” Burke, Sherrill Wren and Gary Jenkins. Honorary pallbearers were Talmadge Burke, Henry Glisson, Glenn Jenkins, Sim Bell, Bobby McKinney, Lee Owens, Angus Godbee and Charlie Hillis.

Tyrese Lamont Goodwin

Tyrese Lamont Goodwin, infant, of Waynesboro died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002 at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital. His funeral was 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, at Haven-Munner-lyn United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Loretta Strong and Mark Edwards officiating. Tyrese was born in Augusta. Survivors include his parents, Trishonda S. Brown and Carlos L. Goodwin, both of Waynes-boro; a brother, Carlos L. Good-win Jr. of Waynesboro; paternal grandparents, Earnestine Pacquette and Cicero Jones, both of Waynesboro; and maternal grandparents, Purvis Brown and Hattie Brown, both of Waynesboro.

Morris Whisnant

Morris “Vaughan” Whisnant, 59, of Blythe died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002 at the VA Medical Center in Augusta. His funeral service was 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, at DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel in Hephzibah, with the Rev. Mike Andrews officiating. Burial was in the Blythe United Methodist Church Cemetery in Blythe.
Mr. Whisnant, a native of Blythe, had lived in Richmond County all of his life. He was an Independent Baptist. He was preceded in death by his mother, Hazel Garland Whisnant. Survivors include his widow, Ann Whisnant of Blythe; seven daughters, Debra Hancock of Hephzibah, Faye Whisnant, Melissa Whisnant, Sissie Whis-nant and Crystal Whisnant, all of Blythe, Ruby Whisnant of Appling and Connie Thomas of Folkston; two sons, Ronnie Whisnant of Blythe and Bobby Whisnant of Augusta; two sisters, Joyce Wiggins of McBean and Mary Wilkens of Heph-zibah; two brothers, Billy Whis-nant of Hephzibah and Johnny Whisnant of Waynesboro; his father, Morris L. Whisnant of Augusta; and 20 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Roy Dailey

Roy Rexter Dailey, 92, of Millen died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002.
His funeral was 3:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at the Millen Baptist Church. Burial was in the Millen Cemetery. Mr. Dailey, a native of Jeff Davis County, was a retired farmer and merchant. He was a member of the Millen Baptist Church and was a former member of the Elam Baptist Men’s Sunday School Class.
Survivors include seven children, DeRoy Dailey, Alton Dailey and Bobby R. Dailey Sr., all of Millen, Juanita Dasher of Lugoff, S.C., Frankie Sapp of Waynesboro, Betty Gay of Garfield and Linda Mincey of Twin City; a sister, Ollie Wiggins of Millen; and 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were grandsons, DeRoy Dailey Jr., Shane Sapp, Wesley Vondene Dasher Jr., Jack Mincey Jr., Bobby Rexter Dailey Jr. and Dobson M. Gay III.
