Mr. Merlin Gillespie, 86, of Fayetteville, Ga., died Thursday, August 31, 2000 at his residence.

Mr. Gillespie was born April 25, 1914 in Franklin, Ga.

A funeral will be Saturday, September 2 at 2 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan. Minister Lester Shell will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park on Roscoe Road.

Pallbearers will be Sonny Collins, Greg Ivey, Patrick Killebrew, David Morris, Gary Schwartz and Abe Young.

Mrs. Ruth W. Markham, 78, of Newnan, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Markham was born March 7, 1922, in Weymouth, Mass. She was the wife of Bud Markham and a homemaker.

A funeral will be held Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Newnan. The Rev. Gary Parrish will officiate, and burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family asks that flowers be omitted and contributions be made instead of the American Diabetes Association, 3 Corporate Square, Suite 120, Atlanta, GA, 30329.

Surviving are her husband, Bud Markham; son, David Markham of Fayetteville; daughter, Betty Purdue of Wisconsin; and brother, Stanley Drown of New Hampshire.

Mr. Cliff Faulkner, Sr., 85, of Hogansville, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.

Mr. Faulkner was born July 15, 1915, in Cullman Ala., to the late Tom and Emma Skinner Faulkner. He had lived in Heard County before moving to Troup County in 1970. Mr. Faulkner was a retired pulpwood producer, and a Baptist by faith.

A funeral will be held Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Rev. Rufus Thornton and the Rev. Ricky Pursley will officiate, and burial will be in Shadowlawn Cemetery in LaGrange.

Surviving are his wife, Emmie Screws Faulkner; son, Clifford Faulkner Jr. of LaGrange; daughter, Kathleen Siggers of LaGrange; four grandchildren, Kathy Denney of Hogansville, Wayne Siggers of LaGrange, and Brenda Gilbert and Eddie Siggers, both of Louisville, Kentucky; four great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

?Mr. Hubert B. Brightwell, 73, of Newnan, died Sunday, September 3, 2000 at Portsbridge Hospice in Riverdale, Ga.

?Mr. Brightwell was born to James and Annabell Brightwell in Montgomery, Alabama. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Brightwell served in Korea where he received numerous citations and awards for outstanding service. After settling in Newnan, he married his wife, Mary Helen Brightwell, and became a member of Trinity Baptist Church.

?Surviving are his wife, Mary Helen Brightwell of Newnan; son, Loyd Brightwell of Buchanan, Ga.; daughters, Melissa Adkison of Rebecca, Georgia, Lana Elders of Newnan and Belinda May of Apple Valley, California; step-sons, Oscar Hendrix and Richard Hendrix, both of Newnan, and a step-daughter, Gail Hendrix of Newnan; sisters, Doris Winkles and Mable Smith, both of Montgomery, Alabama; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

?A funeral was Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 2 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home in Newnan with Pastor F. D. McWhorter presiding. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan.

?Mr. Thomas Herman Cook, 79, of Lazenby Road, Newnan, died Sunday, September 3, 2000 at Emory Peachtree Regional Hospital.

?Mr. Cook was born June 4, 1921 in Carroll County, Georgia to William Larkin Cook and Mary Jane Warren. He was a retired truck driver. He was a veteran of World War II with the United States Army where he received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon and Good Conduct Ribbon. He was a member of Royal Baptist Church.

?A funeral was Tuesday, September 5 at Hillcrest Chapel with Dr. Paul Dennis officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were deacons of Royal Baptist Church: Steve Millians, Coleman Lassetter, Hubert Smith, Rodney Riggs, Charles Combs, Tim Lassetter and Todd Moore.

?Mrs. Debbie Lillie Harris, 88, of Carrollton, died Saturday, September 2, 2000 at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Ga.

?Mrs. Harris was born in Newnan on the seventh day of the seventh month as the seventh child of William and Pearlie Perry. Prior to moving to Carrollton, Mrs. Harris lived in Hogansville where she was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church for more than 20 years. A homemaker and loving wife to Mr. Reuben Harris for more than 62 years, she will always be remembered by her friends as a great gardener and wonderful cook.

?She is survived by her husband, Reuben Harris of Carrollton; son and daughter-in-law, William and Leslie Harris of Carrollton; daughter, Sara Lee Bishop of Locust Grove, Ga.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

?Mr. Washington was born Nov. 29, 1932 in Meriwether County, son of the late Lewis and Gertrude Carter Washington. He was a lifelong resident of Meriwether County, was of the Baptist faith, and was retired from the William L Bonnell Company in Newnan.

?Mrs. Wright was born October 23, 1939 in Troup County, daughter of the late Young and Effie Hubbard Allen. She was a lifelong resident of Hogansville and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years.

Mr. Moses Martin Sr. of Newnan died September 5, 2000 at the Atlanta Medical Center.

Mr. James Cecil Smith, 67, of Coweta County died Tuesday, September 5, 2000 at his residence on Millard Farmer Road.

A funeral will be Thursday, Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Chapel in Newnan with the Rev. Franklin Treadwell and the Rev. Frank Powers officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Joe Patrick, Steve Ward, Brandon Smith, Kenny Boynton, Jimmie Ashmore, David Staley. Honorary pallbearers will be Matt Harris, Bud Smith, Justin Smith, Tommy Thomason and Carlos Sallee.

Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will provide military honors at the graveside in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Smith was born in Coweta County Oct. 20, 1932 to Bud Berry Smith and Ollie Mae Landers. Mr. Smith worked for Dairy Queen for 16 years as manager and also worked for John Weiland Homes as a construction subdivision assistant for eight years. Mr. Smith also was an umpire for the Coweta County Recreation Department and taught Rifle Club at Fairmount School. He received his degree from the former Carroll Tech, now West Central Technical College, in heating and air conditioning. He was a veteran of the United States Marines serving in the Korean War. He was a long-time member of the VFW and a member of the Moose Lodge. He was a member of East Newnan Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Neva Smith of Newnan; children, Elvis Smith, Lenny Smith, Kim Ashmore, Berry Smith and Bill Smith, all of Newnan; sisters, Irene Boynton, Newnan, Opal Owens, Nashvile, Tenn., Mildred Thomason of Nashville, Tenn. Mr. Moses Martin Sr., 68, of Sharpsburg, died September 5, 2000 at the Atlanta Medical Center in Atlanta, Ga.

Mr. Martin was born December 17, 1931 in Coweta County. A member of the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church of Moreland, Ga., he attended the Coweta County public schools and graduated from Howard Warner High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army and later joined the Newnan City Police Department, becoming the first African-American police officer in the department.

A funeral will be Saturday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Moreland. The Rev. Norwert Hills will be presiding, the Rev. Kenneth Bailey will be eulogist, and assisting will be the Rev. W. J. Johnson and Evangeilst Inez Moreland. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be deacons of Mt. Calvary and the Newnan City Police Department.

Mrs. Martha Luckie Ozmore, 90, formerly of Newnan, died Friday, September 8, 2000 at Christian City Convalescent Center.

Mrs. Ozmore was born December 31, 1909 in Newnan. She was a homemaker and seamstress. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Cecil Ozmore and her parents Wade and Ollie Kidd Luckie.

Mr. Leon L. Hamby, 84, of Hogansville, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at Florence Hand Home in LaGrange.

Mr. Hamby was born Dec. 21, 1915, in Meriwether County to the late Charles and Emma Coleman Hamby. He lived in Hogansville most of his life, attended Spirit-Filled Ministries, and was retired from Uniroyal, Inc.

A funeral will be held today, Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Rev. Murray Hyatt, Jr. will officiate, and burial will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville.

Mr. Hunter was born June 8, 1936 in Coweta County.

A funeral will be Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. at Jones Chapel United Methodist Church in Roscoe with the Rev. Joe Geter officiating, assisted by Minister Perry Huggins and Minister Ricky Kirkland.

Mr. McMillian was born September 26, 1938 in Sumter, South Carolina. He was a retired accountant.

Mr. Burl Calhoun Jr., 42, of Newnan, died September 11, 2000 at Emory Peachtree Regional Hospital in Newnan.

He was born September 28, 1957 in Coweta County. He attended Ruth Hill Elementary School in Newnan. After moving to Atlanta, he attended Anderson Park Elementary School and graduated from Turner High School in 1976. He was a gifted athlete in football and baseball, winning many awards and trophies. He was a member of the New Hope A.M.E. Church in Haralson, Ga.

A funeral will be Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000 at 2 p.m. at New Hope A.M.E. Church. Bishop A. L. Holmes will be eulogist; assisted by the pastor, Rev. Willie Heard Jr., Evangelist Susie Hudson and Bishop Richard Sampson. Burial will be in Old White Oak Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Milton Bailey, James Murphy, Arthur Paige, Andre Clowers, Laron Calhoun and Henry Tolbert Jr.

Mrs. Ethel Brooks Hines, 84, of Hogansville, died Friday, September 15, 2000, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.

Mrs. Hines was born June 20, 1916, in LaGrange, daughter of the late Thomas and Ada Glosson Brooks. She had lived in Hogansville since 1932, was retired from Uniroyal, Inc. and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hogansville. She was the wife of the late Ely C. Hines.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, September 17, in the Chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Rev. Harold Willis will officiate and burial will be in the Shadowlawn Cemetery in LaGrange.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Paul Williamson of West Point, one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Marie Hines of Hogansville, sister Mary Carroll of Douglasville, three grandchildren: Lisa Jones of Hogansville, Andrea Otwell of LaGrange, and Jim Hines of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Jones was born January 5, 1942, in Newnan. He was a service director in the automobile industry, and a veteran.

Mrs. Nell Robinson
Mrs. Nell Robinson, 81, of Newnan, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at Emory Peachtree Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Robinson was born Nov. 8, 1918, in Newnan. She served as a nurse in the United States Army, and was preceded in death by her husband, Walter E. Robinson, Jr.

A grave-side service will be held Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at 2:30 p.m. at the Emory Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery on Highway 34 West. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to your favorite charity.

Surviving are her sister and brother-in-law, Virginia Louise and Bill Eady of Newnan; nephew Roy Wade Eady, and niece Virginia Pruitt.

Mr. Eugene L. Brown
Mr. Eugene L. Brown, 88, of Adams Street, Vidalia, Ga., died Sunday, September 17, 2000, in the Meadows Regional Medical Center of Vidalia after a sudden illness.

Mr. Brown was a native of Coweta County and had lived in Vidalia for the past 11 years. He was a retired mechanic and was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Vidalia.

Surviving are his wife, Ila Stitcher Brown of Vidalia; son and daughter-in-law, Barry E. and Ellen Brown of Vidalia; grandson, Jason Brown of Vidalia; granddaughters, Leesa Coursey of Mt. Vernon and Kim Moxley of Columbus, Ga.; gwo great-grandsons and four great-granddaughters; several nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 11 a.m. at the Ronnie L. Stewart Family Funeral Service chapel in Vidalia with the Rev. Murray Ward officiating. The body will then be taken to McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan, Ga. for visitation Tuesday evening. Additional funeral services will be held at McKoon Funeral Home chapel Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. with burial to follow in the Forest Lawn cemetery in Newnan.

Mr. Hoyt Hines
Mr. Hoyt Hines, 82, of New Chapel Road, Whitesburg, died Sunday, September 17, 2000.

He was born in Carroll County Oct. 28, 1917 , son of the late Van Hines and Mollie "Myrt" Phillips Hines.

He was retired from Bibb Manufacturing Company and was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Roselle Pate Hines; daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Don Carter of McDonough, Sybil and Garon Shoemake of Roopville, Joyce and Donald North of Carrollton, Remonda and Johnny Teague of Whitesburg; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Carolyn Hines of Ranburne, Ala.; 17 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, two step-granddaughters, three step-great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Dock and Sequoyah "Bud" Hines and two grandsons, Randy Carter and Derrick Thornton.

A funeral will be Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 3 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with the Rev. Danny Wilson, the Rev. Doug New and Minister J. C. Cook officiating. The body will lie in state at the church for one hour.

Pallbearers will be Keith Carter, Craig Carter, Jonathan Carter, David Shoemake, Scott Shoemake, Joel Thornton and Morgan Butler.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 5-9 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Ozia Jackson, 83, of Grantville, died Sunday, September 17, 2000 in LaGrange.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Mr. Charlie B. Geter
Mr. Charlie B. Geter, 68, of Newnan, died September 15, 2000 at his residence.

Mr. Geter was born Oct. 15, 1931 in Coweta County. He was a member of the Bethel Heard Baptist Church on Charlie B. Davis Road in Newnan.

A funeral will be Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. at Bethel Heard Baptist Church. The Rev. W. J. Johnson will be eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Clinton Melson, pastor, the Rev. Donald T. Barber, the Rev. Willie L. Geter, the Rev. Willie Ed Geter and the Rev. Joe Geter. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Hazel Geter; brother, Jimmie L. Geter of Newnan; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Helen K. Geter, Mrs. Annella Alford of Newnan and Mrs. Willie M. Harris of Atlanta; a host of nieces and nephews; three aunts, Mrs. Ida Mae Geter of Newnan, Mrs. Hilda P. Turner of Franklin and Mrs. Jessie Mae Terrell of Atlanta; three uncles, Albert Potts of Atlanta, Charles Potts of Franklin and John Lee Stephens of Newnan; and a very devoted friend, Mrs. Jannie Mae Cook.

Mrs. Louise C. Kilgore
Mrs. Louise Caldwell Kilgore, 88, of Grantville, died Tuesday, September 19, 2000 at Starcrest Convalescent Center in Newnan.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at the graveside in the Grantville Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville 6-8 p.m. Wednesday night, Sept. 20.

Mrs. Kilgore was born June 24, 1912, in Coweta County, daughter of the late Enoch Marvin Caldwell and the late Mattie Kendrick Caldwell. She was a lifelong resident of Coweta County and was the wife of the late Harvey Kilgore.

Surviving are sisters, Mrs. Varnelle McKoy of Newnan and Mrs. Myra Delanno of Larchmont, New York; a number of nieces and nephews.
