Her strength and courage are an inspiration to her family, friends and caregivers. A loving, accepting, gentle and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Sandra’s favorite pastime in recent years was spending time with her six grandchildren. His work in that country included the establishment of the Christian Leadership Movement of Brazil. In 1971 he returned to the US, making his home in Atlanta. From 1971-75 he was minister to the Community of the North Avenue Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. In 1977 he assumed the responsibility as the Senior Minister of the Decatur Presbyterian Church. In 1979 he became president of the Friendship Force, which he founded in 1977 with participation from then-President Jimmy Carter and Mrs. Rosalynn Carter. He remained active as a Presbyterian minister and has served as volunteer assistant chaplain at Big Canoe Chapel since 1986.
The purpose of the Friendship Force was to provide ordinary citizens of the world the opportunity to establish personal friendships with counterparts in other countries. This was accomplished through a one or two-week homestay experience. The first Friendship Force exchange took place on July 4, 1977 with a massive citizen exchange between Atlanta, Ga. and Newcastle upon Tyne, England. From that beginning, the organization has grown to its current position with active clubs in more than 50 countries and with approximately 4,000 citizen ambassadors setting out from their homes each year traveling to distant lands.
Wayne continued to lead the Friendship Force for 23 years. He traveled to all regions of the world and lived in Moscow, Russia in 1992, guiding the development of a major exchange program between the United States and Russia. In 1993, the Friendship Force was recognized for its international work by being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Following his retirement from the Friendship Force in 2000, Wayne Smith continued to promote understanding through friendship. In October 2002, Smith organized “World Pilgrims” and led a delegation of Christian, Jewish and Muslim clergy on an interfaith pilgrimage to Turkey. The members of this delegation, now close friends, continue to work together on issues related to interfaith understanding in the Atlanta region. Wayne’s most recent international venture with the Friendship Force took place in December 2003 when he led a delegation to Jordan with home stays he arranged with Iraqi families in Jordan.
