Irby David (Dave) Terrell, Col. USAF Ret.
Nov. 10, 1933 - Oct. 14, 2006
Dave Terrell of Big Canoe died at the VA Medical Center in Decatur on Oct. 14, 2006 following a long battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a rare neurological disease. Currently, there is no cure and no effective treatment for this debilitating disorder. In recent years, the disease received national publicity following the death of British actor Dudley Moore who succumbed to complications of PSP.
Dave Terrell was born Irby David Terrell, Jr. in Buena Vista, Va. on Nov. 10, 1933 to the Reverend Dr. Irby D. Terrell and Gertrude Pierce Terrell. Dave later lived in Marion and Bristol, Va. before leaving King College to enter the USAF. He completed basic training and was accepted immediately into the cadet program and became a career military officer. He completed his degree at Omaha State University while in the service. Dave was in SAC for a number of years and served two tours in Vietnam and on his second tour with the 41st TAC Recon Squadron, his plane was shot down over North Vietnam. He successfully ejected and evaded for over two days before he was captured. Dave Terrell spent five years and two months in various prison camps in and around Hanoi and was among a group of POWs transferred for a time to a primitive camp on the China border, dubbed Dog Patch by the Americans held there.
Following his repatriation on March 14, 1973, Col. Terrell attended the Air War College in Montgomery, Al. His last assignment was at Warner Robbins Air Force Base in Georgia. He retired from the Air Force in 1975, having served for more than 22 years. He met his future wife Charlene Terrell while at Warner Robbins and they have been married for 30 years. They lived in the Atlanta area for 11 years and Dave pursued a successful career in commercial real estate.
In 1983, Dave and Charlene moved to Malaga, Spain to follow a lifelong dream to learn the Spanish language and culture. Dave often said the time spent in Spain was the happiest time of his life. When they returned to Georgia, they built a home in Big Canoe in 1984 where they had owned a lot since the late 1970s. Both became members of Big Canoe Chapel within days of moving to the area. Dave was interim Chapel treasurer for one year and served on the Chapel Board of Trustees, chaired the Chapel Benevolence Committee and headed the Chapel food collection program. He also chaired the Architectural Control Committee for a number of years.
It was at Big Canoe that Dave discovered a hidden talent for laying ceramic tile and building stacked stone walls. He built a stone wall on both sides of the steep drive of the Terrells' present house, a total distance of 450 feet. It took two years to complete and the neighbors still call the wall the "Great Wall of Big Canoe." In the stone wall, Dave set one large stone that came from his grandfather's and great-grandfather's stone and earthen dam built in 1898 for their grist mill on the Flint River. Dave loved Big Canoe and its natural beauty and enjoyed the forest and streams.
Dave was very active in the Friendship Force and before he was stricken with PSP, he and Charlene traveled the world with that organization.
In addition to his loving and devoted wife, Dave is survived by children and step-children, David P. Terrell of Washington State, Jenny Terrell Flynn of Florida, Lyta Norman of Georgia and Stephen Shadburn of Ohio. He is also survived by grandchildren Laura Flynn, Ann Marie Flynn, MacKenzie Shadburn, Austin Shadburn, Will Norman, Shandon and Sydney Shadburn and one great-granddaughter. Emalee Harvey. One sister, Frances Terrell Cherney also survives. Mr. Terrell was predeceased by brothers James Stuart Terrell and C. Randolph Terrell. Also surviving are sisters and brothers-in-law and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21 at Big Canoe Chapel with Dr. Jimmy R. Allen, Rev. Lamar Helms and Dr. Jim McCormick officiating. Lee Ellis, a former cell mate in Hanoi, gave a moving tribute to Dave on behalf of the POW organization called NAMPOW. Soloist was René Westray, a niece. Chapel pianist Sam Holmes also provided special music.
There was no burial at this time. Dave bequeathed his body to the Emory School of Medicine for scientific study.
Memorial contributions may be made to: Big Canoe Chapel, 10455 Big Canoe, Big Canoe, Ga. 30143 or to CUREPSP, Society for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Executive Plaza III, 11350 McCormick Road, Suite 906, Hunt Valley, MDS 21031.

Pauline Moore
Pauline Martel Moore of Jasper, Ga. died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006, at her home. Cause of death was breast cancer.
Pauline was born in Lewiston, Me., May 10, 1942, the daughter of the late Antonio and Zelda Martel. She attended elementary school at Holy Cross School, graduated from St. Dominic High School and earned her BA degree in Sociology from the University of Maine at Portland.
Pauline was very active with Holy Cross Church. She was a dedicated singer in the choir, taught catechism classes for youth and was a member of the Children of Mary.
For many years, Pauline was employed at Northeast Bank of Lewiston. While in college, she assisted residents to improve conditions in low-income neighborhoods in Portland.
An avid skier, Pauline was a member of the ski patrol at Sugarloaf.
Pauline loved Maine. She also wanted to experience the vast richness of the world. This desire led her to Georgia as part of the Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) anti-poverty initiative.
There she met and married Matthew Moore from Pasadena, Ca. The Moores settled in Jasper, Ga., raising four children and continuing their anti-poverty and community improvement efforts.
Pauline loved nothing more than her family. Her home was her canvas, her marriage and children her life's work. She immersed herself and her children into the community life of Jasper, where her children would thrive, not only from her values and guidance, but also from the traditions, culture and love of the Jasper community.
You would see Pauline at school activities, the little league baseball field, the Boy Scout hut, concerts, clogging shows, festivals or 4-H activities, with a contagious enthusiasm for all that was happening.
Pauline was dedicated to her husband's dream of educational opportunity and well-being for every child, and provided inspirational support to him in his work at North Georgia Community Action and with numerous community projects in Pickens County. She provided leadership for many school, community and church activities.
If Pauline's family was her life's work, then the frame that held it was her faith in God. Pauline and her family were active members of Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church in Waleska. She was a faithful member of her Bible Study group.
After a valiant three year battle with breast cancer, Pauline passed away at home in the presence of her Georgia and Maine family.
Surviving are her husband, Matthew Moore of Jasper; son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Kristan Moore of Atlanta, Ga., and their son Matthew Quinton Moore, sons Christopher Moore of Washington, D.C. and Michael Moore of Jasper; daughter, Anna Marie Moore of Jasper; and sisters, Rita Dionne of Wales, Ma., and Claire Leblanc of Lewiston, Me.
Pauline's ashes will be interred at St. Peter's Cemetery in Lewiston. The time of the interment and memorial service will be announced at a later date.
In memory of Pauline, contributions can be made to the Ann Moore Cancer Research Fund, Newyork Weill Cornell Medical Center, 520 East 68th St., Box 123, New York, N.Y. 10027.
The Moore family is grateful to all the friends and family of Pauline who provided support during this difficult time.
