Olivene Sellers
Mrs. Olivene Sellers, age 80 of Elizabeth Street, Jasper, Ga., passed away at her residence.
Mrs. Sellers is survived by her son, Tony Sellers of Miami, Fl. A brother and sisters also survive.
The funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4 from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with interment in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. The Revs. Charles O.Walker and Von Hinton officiated.

Barbara Gable
Barbara Ann Gable, age 73 of Holly Springs, Ga., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2006 at her residence. She was a member of New Light Baptist Church and retired from Lockheed Georgia.
Survivors include her daughters, Carol Dickerson and Judy Sheffield, both of Holly Springs, and Scotti Townsend of Jasper; brothers, Dashel Johnson of Maryland, Mack Johnson of Eaton, Ga. and Donald Johnson of Stockbridge, Ga.; sisters, Selma DeBerry of Rossville, Ga., Mary Jeanne Johnson of Fayetteville, Ga., Clara Jane Scott of Hickory Flat, Ga., Elayne Darnell of Jasper and Gayle Johnson and Shippey Gardner, both of Canton. Two step-grandchildren, two step-great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
The funeral service was held Saturday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. from Huey Funeral Home Chapel in Canton. Interment was in Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery, Lebanon, Ga., with the Revs. Ron Davis and Brent Sheffield officiating.

Lenny Payne
Mr. Lenny Payne, age 56 of Jasper, passed away suddenly on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006 at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Payne, Jasper; mother, Jewell Payne, Ball Ground; sons, William Payne and Steven and B.J. Atkins, all of Jasper, and Dusty Atkins, Ball Ground; daughter, Kim Gilleland, Jasper; brother, Jeff Payne, Jasper; sisters, Debbie Jordan, Phyllis Hamby and Freda Hathcock, all of Ball Ground. Seven grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Sunday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. from Sharptop Baptist Church with the Rev. Clyde Brock officiating. Interment followed in Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Jeremy, Jamie and Scott Jordan, Josh, Ken and Brian Hamby and Matthew West. Honorary pallbearers were Chuck Wigington, Mike Free and Jason Brittain.

Larry Stephens
Mr. Larry Stephens, age 39 of Dawsonville, passed away suddenly at Big Canoe Monday, Oct. 30, 2006.
Survivors include his wife of 19 years, Deniese Stephens, Dawsonville; mother, Ruby Little, Sunbright, Tn.; mother-in-law, Gail Webster, Talking Rock; grandparents, Jack and Voncile Moser, Jasper; brother, John Paul Little, Sunbright, Tn.; sisters, Linda Randall (twin), Jasper, Karen Ellis, Ellijay, Annie Stephens, Sunbridge, Tn., Becky Beard and Phyllis Hamby, both of Wartburd, Tn.; brother-in-law, Billy Webster, Talking Rock; sisters-in-law, Regina Silvers, Jasper, and Katrina Lock, Talking Rock. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Larry was preceded in death by his father, Jack Stephens, and a brother, James Lee Stephens.
The funeral service was held Thursday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. from the Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Dawsonville with the Revs. John Henderson and Gary Cowan officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: John Henry Wheeler, Tracy Chumley, Charlie Lane, Tony Jones, J.C. Blackwell and Troy Ledbetter. Cagle Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Carstens
Mrs. Dorothy Carstens, age 81 of Jasper, passed early Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2006 at Wellstar Community Hospice-Tranquility, Austell, Ga.
Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Gail Smith, Marietta, and Deborah and Terry Parkman, Jasper. Five grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survives.
A memorial service was held Sunday, Nov. 5 at 3 p.m. from Mountain View Community Church with Dr. Charles Sineath officiating. The family requests memorials be sent to Mountain View Community Church, Jasper, Ga. 30143. However, those who wish may donate plants suitable for landscaping the church grounds at the church in memory of Mrs. Carstens. Cagle Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Connie Harding
Mrs. Connie Harding, age 44 of the Hinton Community, passed away at her residence Friday evening, Nov. 3, 2006.
Survivors include her husband, Michael Harding, Hinton; father and mother, Jessie and Jolyn Mullinax, Hinton; daughter, Heather Harding, Hinton; brother, Tony Parker, Jasper; sister, Tammy Chastain, Hinton. Nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Sunday, Nov. 5 at 4:30 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerold Young officiating. The Hinton Volunteer Fire Department served as pallbearers. Entombment was in Sunrise Memorial Gardens Chapel Mausoleum. The family requested that flowers be omitted and that memorials be made to the Hinton VFD.

Faye Qualls
Mrs. Faye Qualls, age 71 of Jasper, passed away Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.
Survivors include her husband, Paul Qualls, Jasper; son, Tony Qualls, Jasper; daughter, Connie Johnson, Jasper; brother, Kenneth Buchanan, Jasper; sister, Louise Holmes, Jasper; grandchildren, Cody Qualls and Chelsea Johnson; and step-grandson, Eric Childers. Nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral with the Revs. Autry Dean and Charles O. Walker officiating. Interment followed in Long Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery with Eric Childers, Tommy Qualls, Gary Ayers, Brad Davis and Ronnie, Donnie and David Holmes serving as pallbearers.

Addie Jones
Mrs. Addie Lou Jones, age 91 of Jasper, Ga., passed away Wednesday, Nov.
2, 2005 at Piedmont Mountainside Medical Center. Mrs. Jones and her late
husband, William H. Jones, started Grandview Lake in 1946.
Survivors include her son, William H. Jones, Jr. of Jasper; daughters,
Peggy Jean Jones Petty and Cordia Jones Byers, both of Jasper;
sister-in-law, Tiney Colley of Jasper. Seven great-grandchildren, 10
great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 4 from Sharptop
Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert E. Dial officiating. Interment followed
in the church cemetery under the direction of Roper Funeral Home.

Bertha Hodgens
Mrs. Bertha “Sue” Hodgens, age 70 of Nelson, Ga., passed away Friday,
Nov. 4, 2005 at her home.
Survivors include her husband, Herbert Hodgens of Nelson; son, Terry
Hodgens of Nelson; daughter, Sherry Hodgens of Jasper; brother, Sidney
Parker of Jasper; sisters, Janie Kirk of Talking Rock and Buena Darnell of
Nelson.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6 from Roper Funeral
Home Chapel with the Rev. James Rich officiating. Interment followed in Lake
Forest Memorial Park on Camp Road in Jasper.

Grace Densmore
Miss Grace Densmore, age 83 of Ball Ground, passed away Saturday, Nov.
5, 2005 at Canton Nursing Center.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7 from the Chapel
of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Steve Chadwick and Barry Payne
officiating. Interment followed in Four Mile Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Skipper, Jonathan and Stephen Densmore, Tim Alley, Johnny
Free and Andy Hunt.

Rod Lewis
Mr. Rod Lewis, age 36 of Talking Rock, passed away late Friday evening,
Nov. 4, 2005 in Jasper.
Survivors include his wife, Debi Lewis, Talking Rock; sons, Ren, Ryan
and Riley Lewis, all of Talking Rock; mother, Doris Cox, Canton; father,
Ronald Lewis, California; brother, Tim Lewis, Jasper; sisters, Wanda
O’Bryant, Jasper, and Brenda Sadowsky, North Dakota; nieces, Nicole Tucker,
Sara Carpenter, Brandi Bombelyn, Sami O’Bryant, Wanda Kay and Jennifer
Lewis; and nephew, Alec Tucker.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel
of Cagle Funeral Home with Minister Tony Boyd officiating.

Ralph Slaughter
Mr. Ralph Edward Slaughter, age 57 of Winter Haven, Fl., passed away
Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005.
Mr. Slaughter was born Sept. 21, 1948 in Chattanooga, Tn. He was a real
estate developer, was of the Church of God of Prophecy Faith and a US Army
veteran. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward K. Slaughter.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Slaughter of the home; daughters,
Stacey Knight of North Carolina and Amy Slaughter of Texas; son, Michael
Patterson II, Florida; mother, Ruth Jones Slaughter of Jasper; sisters,
LaGuana Godfrey, Ellijay, Lee Slaughter, Nevada, and Rose Mary Padgett,
Jasper. Five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Saturday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel
of Bernhardt Funeral Home with the Revs. Donnie McKee and Matt Godfrey
officiating. Music was by Irene Wofford. Pallbearers were: Pete Slaughter,
Paul, Donnie and John David McKee and A.J. and Allen Padgett. Honorary
pallbearer was C.W. Brock. Interment was in Sunrise Memorial Gardens in
Jasper with graveside rites by Pickens #47 DAV.

David Parker
The Rev. David Parker, age 33, passed away Thursday morning, Nov. 3,
2005 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.
Survivors include his mother, Pat Parker, Jasper; grandmother, Janie
Mills Baldridge, Jasper; uncle and aunt, Olin (Bud) Mills and Carol, Jasper;
cousins, Jeff and Katrina, Gavin and Cody Manus and Robbie Mills.
The funeral service was held Sunday, Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. from Talking Rock
Baptist Church with the Revs. Kenneth, Terry Green, Howard Cantrell and
William Darnell officiating. Interment followed in Sunrise Memorial Gardens
with Jim Quinton, Keith Petty, Matthew Morris, Jim Fowler, Bryan Reece,
Wesley Cook and Keith Mills serving as active pallbearers. Glenn Jarrett
served as an honorary pallbearer. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.

Ernest Mashburn
Mr. Ernest Mashburn, age 69 of Jasper, passed away at Northside
Hospital-Cherokee in Canton Thursday morning, Nov. 3, 2005.
Survivors include his wife, Katherine Mashburn, Jasper; sons and
daughters-in-law, Floyd and Garah Mashburn, Rydal, and Farrol and Melissa
Mashburn, Jasper; daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Jose Saurez and Vera
and Horace Wofford, all of Jasper; brothers, Raymond Mashburn, Jasper, Glenn
Mashburn, Blue Ridge, Richard, Calvin, Steve and Thomas Mashburn and Bill
and Vada Pinkerton, all of Murphy, N.C.; sisters, Willie Lee Allen,
LaFayette, Elleen Stiles, Annie Garland, Bonnie Gillian, Roberta Hughes and
Mary Panther, all of Murphy, N.C. Ten grandchildren also survive. Mr.
Mashburn was preceded in death by his father, James; mother, Ella Dills
Mashburn; step-mother, Lois Mashburn; daughter, Martha Mashburn; and sister,
Eula May Roberson.
The funeral service was held Saturday, Nov. 5 at 3 p.m. from the Chapel
of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Jeff Johnson and Randy Richard
officiating. Interment followed in Sunrise Memorial Gardens with Ronnie,
Marvin and Brian Roberson, Rex Kilpatrick, Tim Pinkerton, Enrique Pimentel
and Tim Allen serving as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to the American
Cancer Society.

Patsy Ellis
Mrs. Patsy Ellis, age 55 of Jasper, passed away Friday evening, Nov. 4,
2005 at Wellstar-Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Ga.
Survivors include her son, Timothy Ellis, Jasper; daughter and
son-in-law, Shelia and Kevin Curtis, Jasper; brothers and sister-in-law,
Ronnie and Willene Morris and David Morris, all of Jasper; sister, Barbara
King, Jasper. Four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also
survive. Mrs. Ellis was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Ellis.
The funeral service was held Monday, Nov. 7 at 3 p.m. from the Chapel of
Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Gene Childers, Clyde Bock and Grant Wade
officiating. Interment followed in Sunrise Memorial Gardens with Darren,
Chad, Alan and Jason Morris, Cody King and Sonny Anderson serving as
pallbearers.

A.J. Hales
Mr. A.J. Hales, age 79 of Augusta, formerly of the Fairview Community,
Passed away Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004 at the Veterans Administration
Medical Center in Augusta.
He is survived by one sister, Vera Hales Parker, Jasper; nieces, Mildred
Sewell, Faye Parker and Diane Green, all of Jasper. Several
great-nieces and nephews, several great-great-nieces and nephews and cousins. Mr. Hales
was preceded in death by his father, Sherman Hales; mother, Mattie Hales;
sister, Bonnie Hales; and nephew, James Parker.
The funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7 from Fairview
Baptist Church with the Revs. Wallace Sutton, Horace Biddy, Gary Reavis
and Don Cagle officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery with
Local Chapter #47 DAV in charge of military graveside service and a closing
prayer by a nephew, Ethan Fields. The following served as pallbearers: Jimmy
and Tim Sewell, Jack Green, Joey Fleming and Jimmy Parker. Honorary
pallbearers were: Lee Hughes and Daniel Green. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of
the arrangements.

William Hasty Sr.
Former State Senator William G. “Bill” Hasty Sr. died at his home on Nov. 5, 2003 at the age of 81. He spent his entire adult life in public service to the people of Cherokee County and the State of Georgia, working tirelessly to assist fellow Georgians with their needs.
A graduate of Reinhardt Academy and Reinhardt College, Mr. Hasty earned his Bachelor’s degree from Oglethorpe University. He earned his Master’s in Education from Mercer University. Mr. Hasty served in the US Navy during WW II in the European Theatre.
Born and reared in Cherokee County, Mr. Hasty began his career in 1941 as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse called Pine Grove in Cherokee County. Education was his dream for the children of Cherokee County, and he served more than 20 years in the field of education including terms as principal of Ball Ground Elementary, Marble Hill School and Jasper High.
He was elected Cherokee County School superintendent in 1952 where he served until he accepted the position of director of State and Federal Regulations for the Georgia Education Association. During his tenure as Cherokee County School superintendent, he oversaw the consolidation of the Canton City School System with the Cherokee County School System. He built the first country high school with the construction of Cherokee High.
Governor Lester Maddox appointed Mr. Hasty to serve as deputy director of Probation and Parole for the State of Georgia Department of Corrections in 1969 where he worked until his retirement.
Mr. Hasty was a director and founder of North Georgia Bank, which is now a part of Wachovia Bank. He served 14 years in the Georgia State House of Representatives and Georgia State Senate. Hasty played a pivotal role in paving roads across North Georgia, including Interstate 575 from Atlanta to Canton.
Mr. Hasty was elected to the Georgia Department of Transportation Board as the 9th District Representative and was elected chairman of the Georgia DOT Board in 2001. He retired from the board in 2002.
Mr. Hasty is the recipient of Reinhardt College’s 1987 Alumnus of the Year Award and the prestigious President’s Award in 1992. Oglethorpe University awarded Mr. Hasty their School Bell Award in 1987 for his outstanding work in the field of education.
Hasty was named First Citizen of Cherokee County by the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce in 1995. He was honored by the Garden Club Council of Georgia for the state highway wildflower project, along with other civic recognitions for his leadership in education and public service. The Canton Lions Club named Hasty a Melvin Jones Fellow, its most distinguished award, for his 50 years of membership and service to the community through the Lions Club.
He was recently honored by the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners for lifelong service and dedication to the citizens of Cherokee County with a bronze plaque with his photograph and listing of accomplishments which will hang in the Cherokee County Justice Center in his honor.
A well-known local columnist for the Cherokee Tribune for many years, Mr. Hasty has published two books, Remember When and Yesterday and More, both collections of short stories and articles about his life, memories of the Depression era of his childhood and writings of his opinions, travels and current events. His third collection of short stories is now in publication.
Mr. Hasty was a member of Canton First Baptist Church where he was Deacon for 40 years and is a Life Deacon. He was a Mason and member of the Cherokee Shrine Club; and also a member of the American Legion.
Mr. Hasty is survived by his wife of 60 years, Hazel Wyatt Hasty, also of Cherokee County; three children and their spouses, Dixie and Bob Kinard of Dalton, Billy and Linda Hasty and Joanie and Ned Castleberry, all of Canton; sister and brother-in-law,Valmon and Weldon Henson; brother and sister-in-law, Arnold and Juanita Hasty; and sister-in-law, Azzie Lee Hasty. Eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Friday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. from the First Baptist Church of Canton. Burial took place in Riverview Cemetery in Canton. Huey Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
